Woodland Camping in South Devon between the coastal town of Torquay and Dartmoor National Park

The quaint little village of Rattery on the edge of Dartmoor is a rather sleepy sort of place. Old thatched-roofed houses and newer bungalows are cobbled together around the ancient church, while outside the churchyard a pub attracts locals and walkers alike. Above its entrance, flanked by old wrought-iron wagon wheels, the date 1028 is scribed, alluding to the village’s oldest records in the Domesday book. The village name, apparently, comes from the ‘Red Trees’ of the area. And today, just west of Rattery, you can camp in among them, pitching your tent beneath the leafy canopy of Ashbourne Wood.

In fact, though most renowned for its 25 wild camping pitches – clearings and spaces among the trees where you can pitch a tent and have a campfire – Ashbourne Wood offers plenty more besides. Campervans and caravans are also permitted on the hard-standings near reception, while glampers can choose from a range of options, from sturdy gypsy caravans and pods, to summery bell tents and octagonal-wooden huts known as micro-lodges. Firepits are available for hire regardless of what you choose, so you’ll always be able to toast your marshmallows and soak up that traditional camping atmosphere, while an open meadow provides for groups who fancy gathering together in one large place.

In all, this expansive site is a real treasure trove of pathways and clearings. It’s a full 63-acres in size if you include the rest of the forest and for children with a little imagination it’s a haven to explore. Den building, tree-climbing and wildlife watching are all just for starters, if you’re willing to wander a little further to the village pub, or hop in the car and delve deep into Dartmoor National Park (just 2 miles away), then the opportunities are endless. Don’t rush away too fast though. Kicking back in this quiet campsite is a simple pleasure in itself. Sometimes, staying put and enjoying the sounds of the woods is the very best place to start.

Quiet and relaxing with great facilities

Had a great time at Ashbourne Woods. The lady on the front desk was very friendly and helpful. The site has a really relaxed atmosphere. Sitting round the fire at night was really nice. The facilities are good and very clean with access to washing machines, fridges and a charging point. You can buy logs on-site which are a bit pricey but convenient. Would strongly recommend.

Unlimited hot showers. Free use of kettle & fridge. Good pub in walking distance.

‘Gravel & grass’ campervan pitch was mainly mud. Also a lot of road noise from A38. The place was OK, but not as magical as it looks from the website photos.

Response from Ashbourne Woods

Hi Pippa,
Thank you for your review. Sorry you didn't have as magical a time as you expected. Unfortunately due to people parking on our grass the weather the grass tends to get a little worn out by the end of the summer season.
Kind Regards, Hayley

Wild haven with delicious pub in walking distance

We stayed on a gravel pitch with our camper. The back of emplacements falls on to the wood which is delightful. The gravel pitches are not as private as some of the emplacements so windbreakers are useful. We will be back to wild camp with our tent as the emplacements are so very private, dappled in Sunlight and many of them have their own fire pit. There is wild river swimming very near by as are gorgeous beaches. We had a really beautiful weekend. The walk to the pub is the perfect end to the evening and the food and staff are top rate. Very friendly, clean, comfortable campsite and we are already looking to return again this summer.

Incredibly beautiful campsite!

I stayed here over the bank holiday weekend in my campervan. It’s such a beautiful campsite, with loads of wild tent pitches hidden in the woods. Only a ten minutes walk to a really nice friendly pub and the staff on the campsite are also really lovely and helpful! We had a brilliant weekend and will definitely be back!

All last Summer

I helped out on this fantastic "small site" with my wife last summer and we are here again. There is so much more than you can read on the website. We specialise in making people's holidays as free from rules and regs as we can. We allow fires or firepits on all pitches and actively encourage them even in our woodland "wild pitches" We also boast one of the best pubs in Devon just 10 mins walk from reception. Weekends our woodland is full of smoke and lights and happy campers....Steve
