Hole Station is a firm favourite among the camping fraternity, which is hardly surprising given its secluded woodland pitches, campfire encouragement, and natural beauty

Situated on the land of a former railway station in a sparsely populated part of Devon, this adult-only hideaway is a truly special place. We first heard about it in 2009, and it quickly became a favourite among Cool Camping readers, and we’re pleased to say that it has retained all its rustic charm – along with its secluded woodland pitches, campfires and natural beauty.

Whether you bring your own tent or opt for a pre-erected Rent-A-Tent here, you’re going to love your pitch. There are just 19 of them, spread about the place in woodland clearings. Each pitch bears its own number and offers privacy within a magical tree-filled setting. Each has a tarp strung up to one side, allowing some added all-weather protection and creating the perfect space to set up your own bush-craft kitchen.

The owners Greg and Liz eventually bought Hole Station after keeping their eyes on the property for years. They live in what was the old ticket office while their kids are residents of a renovated old railway carriage next door (think Annie and Clarabel-style from Thomas The Tank Engine). Together they are slowly bringing the wood back to its former forest glory by coppicing and pollarding, which they do in winter, after the last of the season’s campers has packed up and gone home.

The cut-down wood is used to create wildlife habitats and fuel for campfires. So feel a little smug, as you sit mesmerised by the licking flames of your fire at night, that you’re forming a symbiotic relationship with the trees all around you. In fact, the clearing you’re pitched in is helping to shed more life-giving light on the young oaks nearby, enabling them to have a kick-start at growing into huge, majestic trees likely to outlive us for centuries to come.

It’s not just the campfire culture, perfect pitches and woodland restoration that Liz, Greg and family have got right at Hole Station, though. The loos are of the compost variety and all rubbish (including food waste) is recycled or turned into compost wherever possible in order to give something back to this lovely corner of England.

Finally their resident pony Sanne is on hand to provide horse-and-trap rides and there are three goats – the preposterously named Dominar Rigel 16th, Kha’Dargo and Grace. Greg and Liz plan to relaunch their meadow as a centre for ‘low-tech living’ courses. Plus there’s a signed Woodland Walk on which you half expect to encounter a fairy or two before reaching (handily labelled) The End – a top spot for watching the sunset. Evenings are peaceful wherever you are, with quiet time after 10pm.

So there you have it: Hole Station is as peaceful and bucolic as it gets, and about as refreshing and romantic a country getaway as you will find.

EVERY PITCH HAS IT'S OWN TOILET FACILITY. Campfires are permitted (encouraged actually), kits consisting of logs, kindling, and firelighters are available from reception – no need to pre-order and all you need to bring are matches. There are also tripod cooking grills for hire (first come first served)  which go over your campfire, lots of fun to be had with those.
We have a cafe where we serve breakfast which has a local info board and things to do info in the seating area, and you can also order from a selection of delicious home cooked pre-cooked evening meals that just need heating.
For a wash and dry laundry service just bring your togs to reception in the morning and they will be ready for the afternoon, or in the afternoon ready for morning.
The car park is private.
The facilities block has covered washing up stations with hot water, a freezer for cool blocks, electric showers with large cubicles (and lots of hooks),  a mobile phone charging station, eco loos, wash basins, mirrors and hairdryer plug in – everything is free to use.

Suitable For

18+ adults only. Tents – yes. Campervans, caravans, dogs, kids, radios, TVs, musical instruments – no.

Dartmoor is a 20-minute drive away and the beaches of Bude and Widemouth are a 35–40-minute drive in the opposite direction. You can be standing on a Dartmoor Tor in the morning, swimming in the Atlantic in the afternoon, enjoying dinner in a tucked-away country pub in the evening, and finishing the day sitting gazing into your campfire on site. The area is great for cycling with the nearby Tarka Trail and the Granite Way for off road, and any number of quiet country lanes. If you fancy honing your Robin Hood skills, there’s an archery centre just down the road: Arms of Old (01409 231171). Or Dragon Archery (08000 372466), further afield, has exciting courses – come and have a go at the Agincourt course if you and your bow are up to it.

The Owner Says

Covid - Every pitch has it's own loo facility, showers are bookable so no queuing, on site payments are contactless, and  pitch occupation is limited to 2 persons.

Under normal circumstances the site is never crowded - even less so now.

IMPORTANT - The site you are on is the Cool Camping Directory, to which we have allocated a limited number of pitches for booking. If none show as  available go to our website which is holestationcampsite at co dot uk (we are not permitted to put a link here) where there is more availability.

Camping at Hole Station is unique, pitches are sited in private clearings in woodland - about as far from camping in a field as you can get. The peace, quiet and privacy you enjoy here are an eye opener for those who have previously camped on sites that are 'open plan'.

No tripping over next doors guylines here, or experiencing the joys of kids playing football at 6am. You won't suffer the delights of car doors slamming, headlights providing illumination in your tent , others who are convinced their choice in music is what you want to hear 24 hours, or finding out what some shouty cockney is up to on Eastenders.

Sat by your campfire, gazing up at the stars sans light pollution, you could be forgiven for thinking you have the place all to yourselves.

A rare place when mums and dads can have some grown up time together – no under 18's.

Two styles of camping:

BYO  -  you bring all your own gear. Every BYO pitch has it's own kitchen shelter, simple bench and  campfire pit. No two pitches are the same, and it's self selection so on arrival the first thing you do is have a wander and choose from those available. We charge per person which means you can put up awnings, hammocks, multiple tents etc. without being hit with a bill for extras. Maximum tent size 7 x 5 metres, let us know if your tent exceeds 5m, we will reserve a larger pitch for you.

Rent-A-Tent  - All you need to bring is your bedding, torches, matches and a toiletry kit. Everything else is provided including a large, fully equipped wooden open fronted kitchen/dining shelter and of course a tent. Your tent has plenty of stand up headroom with a wood floor, two bedrooms and airbeds included. Although you have gas cooking facilities provided, if you really don't want to cook then don't - we have an on site takeaway cafe.

Perfect campsite for getting away from it all

My partner and I spent two nights here and we loved every minute of it. The site itself is small but doesn't feel it as the pitches are well spread out and you feel like you're on your own in the woods. The shelters and fire pits made the trip and everything is very well thought out. The facilities are great, clean and work well. I particularly loves the shower booking system in place. The site is very eco friendly and the owners know how to make your stay fun! Highly recommended and we can't wait to return.

Great little get away

Had an absolutely brilliant stay. Stayed 2 nights and it was just what we needed. Peaceful and relaxing surroundings completely away from the hustle and bustle. The pitches were well spaced with plenty of room for everything you need. Excellent breakfast in Lizs’ cafe, definitely a must do! Little touches like the farm animals and wandering chickens made the stay even more special! Highly recommend this campsite if you’re looking for a quiet, child free escape. We will definitely be coming back!

A slice of heaven

Was completely blown away by this beautiful ‘wild campsite’…with its privately owned forest, tent pitches so well spaced its near impossible to tell there is anyone else around. It’s so quiet and serene…much needed in the chaos of life! The site is well laid out with directions on how to access various things - which was good as there was no stress with how they need things to be done. Lovely little shower block with loos and a wash up facility, and each tent pitch has its own composite loo too!! Also a little phone charging unit - powered by solar, recycling unit and access to buying logs and a cooking stove rental! And…a lovely little cafe type area that serve breakfast each day….veggie options too!!! (It was the best veggie breakfast I have had….ever!) The people that run the place are so lovely and friendly…I simply couldn’t fault Hole Station!! I loved it so much, 2 nights turned into 4!

Perfect get away from it all camping

If you love camping under the trees, instead of a great big open field with tents and caravans in touching distance of your tent, you will fall in love with Hole Station . Even with the rain we loved it , the pitches are far away from each another that you feel you are in the middle of nowhere . We loved the fact we could have a camp fire every evening even in the rain. Each pitch has it’s own compost loo , which is great for middle of the night . All the pitches are different , we would advise to get there at 13:00 hrs so you can have more choice . There are pitches close to the main footpath all further away which ever you pick there are large wheelbarrows to carry all your equipment. We can’t wait to go back at the beginning of September. The biggest thing is there are no Children waking you early in the morning or late night music, it so peaceful.

Different to others

Enjoyed a lovely two night stay in the picturesque and nature based Hole Station campsite. The pitches are unique and a nice change from most campsites. The facilities are up there with the best we've seen. The compost toilets are easy to use and the modern showers are clean and have no timers on the hot water. The café food is nice and reasonably priced. Your breakfast will be accompanied by the friendly café cat too. You can also charge your phone on-site for free, which is handy. We were able to relax and recharge in our pitch as the surrounding area is very quiet (especially at night). We sat for hours bathing in the forest, watching our campfire burn and the wildlife running around us. The shelters on every pitch come in very handy when the heavens open. Highly recommend.

First time, good experience

It was my first time camping and I choose a nice and good place to do it. Really good connection with the nature, 100% eco-friendly (loo without flushing was a new thing for me ) I enjoyed my days there. Breakfast was really good and fresh. I received a good information about places to go and how to make fire (my first time do it ). Everything was well explained. Peacefully place to stay. I will definitely book it again (rent-a tent) or trying the Railway carriage. Recommended if you want to be away for a busy city, kids and everything .

Enjoyable and Different

I booked this not really knowing what to expect. The campsite certainly didn't disappoint, from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. We were allowed to roam and chose our pitch, we chose pitch 23 quite spacious with our own pet Robin and Woodpecker!! Breakfast was superb and reasonably priced with decent sizes portions, beware of the cat he will get very comfy on you and then sit on the chair opposite so you can feed him your breakfast. Also be aware that they have Goats that occasionally escape, free range chickens, roosters plus a couple of horses. This place is unlike any other campsite we have been to they encourage you to set a campfire alight and if you wish cook using it. If you are looking for posh pitches and luxury shower/toilet blocks then this place is NOT for you, we loved it especially the booking system for a shower, write your name next to the time you want. Everything is recycled including your toilet contents!! Overall if you enjoy basic, back to roots, peace, tranquility and serenity with very few if any mod cons then we strongly recommend Hole Station Campsite. We look forward to returning next year

Another wonderful time!

We came to Holestation after enjoying it so much last year in July. This time the Greg meet up to check in with a mask on. He went through all the information with us and general running of the site with covid guidance as well. It was absolutely fine having a eco loo on our pitch. It made things alot safer. Always so good to have a hot clean shower each day and just mark a time slot. The woods are so beautiful and peaceful to sit and rest and eat and take in the scenery and lovely bird calls. So nice to wake up early to hear a woodpecker on the tree. We spotted a hornets nest which was cool. We love the great outdoors and are big on the environment being eco friendly and Greg and his partner has got this down to a tee! Well done and we will return again hopefully next year. Thankyou so much!

Fantastic facilities and very secluded

Hole Station is a really lovely and well-equipped campsite. Beautiful little pitches surrounded by trees and sheltered from the wind. The individual composting toilets were covid friendly and the communal spaces were well presented when we did need them. A perfect site to escape to but not much obvious around in terms of walking and exploring so bring books!

Peaceful and quiet lovely place to stay

We had a great time here a bit damp at times but that’s our British weather.great privacy and the quietness was most welcoming. Facilities are just right and everything you need is right there. Thoroughly recommend it maybe see you again next year!!

Relaxed and remote

From the moment we arrived we felt at ease with the measures in place. The pitch was peaceful and beautiful with the fire pit and sheltered seating spot extra nice touches. We will definitely stay there again.

We will be back!

We had a great stay at hole station last weekend. We left a day early due to torrential rain/tent issues but no fault of the site. Secluded pitches with your very own fire pit/shelter with logs to buy on site at a reasonable price. We were hesitant about the composting loos idea but actually found them cleaner than your standard facility. Showers were hot and clean too with no queues thanks to the booking system. We made use of the enormous wheelbarrows provided to cart gear to the pitch and the handy freezer for icepacks. The owners gave us a walk through when we arrived so we knew where everything was. It’s worth noting that this isn’t your ‘average’ campsite, if you can’t handle the odd bug or squirrels climbing about then this isn’t for you, if you want to be surrounded by complete nature and not have neighbours disturbing you then book now! Once the heavens have closed up a bit and we get a coat of waterproofer on the tent, we will be back!

Tip Top

What a great place to stay, peaceful, no kids, no music blaring out, fantastic. Your own little clearing in the woods well spaced from the neighbours, thoroughly recommended.

Amazing place This place is in my top 3 of semiwild campsites we've been till now. We are travelling a lot and I can honestly recommend this place. Quiet. No screaming children. Everything is just fantastic.

Lovely stay!

We had a lovely week long stay here. Quiet, calm and restful. We had everything we needed for a great week - except compliant weather! The site was so well organised and we partially liked the shower booking system as this meant no waiting around. Stay here - you won't regret it.

Unique and awesome

This is honestly one of the coolest campsite my partner and I have stayed in. Ignoring the occasional orchestra of sheep and cows the campsite is really peaceful. The wash facilities are eco friendly and really clean. The campsite is located nicely between Bude beach and Dartmoor National Park with lots to do, see and explore. This was a perfect escape from the city.

Another wonderful stay at Hole Station

Our 7 night stay at Hole Station was the first time we’d stayed away from home since lockdown. It was just what we needed. It was as wonderful and peaceful as our previous stays (this was our longest stay to date) and it all felt very safe and well-managed re COVID-19 measures. A really warm welcome, great food from the station cafe onsite as usual (try the chilli - pre-order by 10am and pick up later) and the food at Black River Inn is always good too, with an ever changing menu. A fantastic experience. Can’t wait to go back.

Lovely site, very peaceful and well managed.great hosts very helpful.booked three nights and didn't leave the site as so enjoying the chill!

Great find!

Very welcoming (Greg), funny signs everywhere explaining how stuff works. Nice idea having a circular path around the pitches. We liked the shower booking system so you can have a lie in if it's booked already! Pitch side loo worked well, sawdust really works. Good striking distance for Bude, Tintagel and Port Isaac also accessible. Enjoyed our stay.

A beautiful wood with secrets to unravel!

I've seen little snatches of Summer and Autumn here now. The wood accepts you and this tiny island of trees, fungi and creatures reminds you that once we all lived in the woods! I have some stunning photos of fungi. I like the hospitality and friendliness in the locailty and everyone I've met at Hole Station has been lovely, respectful; leaving not more than any unavoidable footprint. A superbly managed, hale and healing wood.

Grouding at Holestation

Living in fear is not my style but from time to time I need to get away from a synthetic lifestyle in concrete buildings, nuked by gadgets and environmental pollution. Spending time in nature is my way of grounding myself and Holestation offers me that opportunity in massive doses. Camping in your own little patch of woodlands, away from your car and setting some logs on fire to cook a meal is getting in touch with your primeval self. That deeper self is peace loving and simplicity itself. Most importantly, getting out of your comfort zone teaches you a lot about yourself and you go back a transformed person (if you bother to listen to those lessons). What I am really saying is that the Holestation experience is good for your prana, soul, or for a sense of adventure. Highly recommend it to human beings.

We stayed for four nights in July and absolutely loved our stay - we didn't want to leave. It felt like we were all alone in a gorgeous wood and could sit and chat over the fire until the stars came out. Equally, it was awesome to wake with the birds rather than kids. When we were at our tent we wouldn't have known anyone else was around. The owners were very friendly, and the veggie cooked breakfast was fantastic. The facilities had everything you need and the toilets and showers, whilst basic, were clean and totally fine. Will definitely be going back - hopefully for longer!

Gorgeous site, great facilities and a warm welcome

We really loved this campsite - it's very peaceful (everyone seems to respect that this is a low-key, quiet place) and you get your own little clearing in the woods to set up home. We took our own tent, but the rent-a-tent options also looked very appealing. The facilities were well-maintained and spotlessly clean and the morning cafe was a nice addition. We usually cook all our own food, but couldn't resist one of Liz's bacon rolls! The site is conveniently located and easy to find - Dartmoor and Bude are within easy reach and there are lots of activities and lovely pubs nearby. I would thoroughly recommend coming here - we'll certainly be back again!

Wonderful eco-friendly, private, quiet getaway

We only stayed a night but had a wonderful time at Hole Station. Everybody was friendly, we had a choice of pitches and the facilities were great. We could barely see anybody from our tent, and there are some pitches where you'd feel completely isolated. The kitchen shelter was useful, the logs were plentiful and we woke up to birdsong. Good showers, eco toilets which were interesting (lots of info about them inside – a great system!) and a freezer for cool blocks. Would love to stay again.

Couldn't fault it at all, thought the owners were lovely, the facilities were well maintained and clever. Lots of options for breakfast at the little cafe and you can also order afternoon tea and evening meals to be cooked and collected later on, although this might be seasonal. The pitches were well spaced apart and well set-up- LOVED the little cooking area under the canopy with it's own bench/fire pit/drawers. Lots of lovely little touches, we wished we could have stayed much longer!! Would love to camp here again. Thank you!!

Peaceful, restful break

My husband and I have just spent a lovely couple of nights at Hole Station. We rented a tent which took all the hassle out of putting your own up. The weather wasn’t great but that didn’t dampen our experience. Greg and Liz have thought of everything, the showers and toilets are lovely and clean and Liz does a mean breakfast! The air in the trees sends you into a deep sleep and in the evening you can listen to the crackling of the open fire and the bird song whilst sipping a good red wine...what more do you need! Bude is only a short drive away and there is a fab spa there if the weather isn’t good for walking and taking in the gorgeous countryside. Lovely food at the local pub too. We will be back. Thank you!

Like all the reviews before, we have to give this place 5 stars. Wonderful secluded campsites, clean facilities, lovely owners. Even the fellow campers were a lovely bunch! We had one of our best camping trips ever and plan to be coming back for more!

cosy woodland camping

We had a fabulous time. Greg and Liz were extremely friendly and jovial, giving advice on local pubs and walks. We were extremely fortunate to pretty much have the woodland campsite to ourselves, only seeing another camper on our last day. This made it even more wonderful at nighttime with a nice warming log fire, listening to the owls and whatnot, with not a soul around. The pitches are all fairly off set from the main path so there is a great feeling of privacy - the rain shelters and benches are a really fab addition which many other sites do not provide. The facilities were fabulous, with phone charging points (remember your charger), a freezer to refreeze ice packs, and a large boiler to provide hot washing up water, the compost toilets and shower cubicles were also very clean. We found this a great site to use as a base camp for exploring - but would also have been just as happy lounging in the woodland by the tent as there is so much animal life around. we will definitely be back!

Camping Hideaway

I loved the pitch, the camp fire and the cooking shelter on each pitch. Each pitch was perfectly located within the woodland, as though it was the only pitch there. I preordered dinner to heat up - tasty and generous. Welcoming, friendly and as close as you can get to wild camping, without giving up all the luxury’s (like a tasty cooked breakfast).

We didn’t want to leave

We loved Hole Station. It was our best camping experience to date. What proper camping is all about. We stayed for two nights only this time but we’ll definitely be back, and for longer next time. From the warm welcome to the beautiful, secluded pitch and the campfire, it was the perfect way to spend a weekend.

Beatifully back to nature camping

This was our first time at hole station and I can easily say it won’t be our last. There is everything you need here and more. Its proper wild camping with an open fire and spacious pitches in an unspoilt woodland what more could you want. Greg and Liz the very hospitable owners also have a breakfast and afternoon tea station for some home cooked grub if you dont fancy cooking and theres plenty more comoditys to make your stay as pleasant and easy as possible. A lovely break away from reality! Thank you!

Lovely quite woodlands experience.

Hole station camp site is great, this was the first time we visited and we loved it. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Sitting round the camp fire was a lot of fun, make it feel like you are really ruffing it. It’s around a 30 min drive to the closet beach, in Bude. Definitely recommend.

Just so peaceful

This was our first trip to Hole Station but it certianly won’t be our last. A wonderful relaxing and peaceful few days away. Back to basics camping, very clean and tidy and if you do need a technology fix, you can charge your phone on site. Only down side is that some of the pitches were quite small so if you have a bigger tent you’re more limited on where you can pitch. We will definitely be back but will sadly have to wait for next year now.

camping in the woods - what more do you need!

We stayed last weekend. After a long and hard week at work when my partner suggested a couple of days camping in the woods I jumped at the chance. it was our first time at Hole station campsite and my first time camping in a wood! We both absolutely loved it and didn't want to leave. The camp site has good amenities, all very clean. Great hosts, had a chat with both Greg and Liz over our ordered cook breakfast, which was delicious and filled us both up the day. The pitches are a good size and spaced out enough for privacy. We will definitely return, my favourite camp site so far. We both felt relaxed and recuperated after, cannot wait for some more of that and our return to nature.

Perfect escape

My friend and I wanted to get away for the weekend and Hole Station offered the perfect setting to be away from the world (and children) and spend a few days in the serenity of birds, squirrels, tress and a crackling fire. If you're looking for a spot with showers, toilets, washing stations etc. Hole Station has you covered but, if you're also looking to get away and spend three days disconnected from the hum-drum of everyday life (as we were), then you can also do that here. Great spot, great weekend.

best campsite

Best camping experience I have had in the UK. Great facilities and friendly staff. Would really recommend the rent-a-tent option to take the hassle out of a short camping break. Will definitely come again.

The naughty dogs

I just watched the Hole Station camper's video and it's brilliant - hope to meet some of these people in the future; really made me smile. I've just stayed there for 11 days in glade 11 and I was blown away at how at home I felt in the woods. Peace and Quiet eh? It's one of the most raucous places I've ever been! One night, when I had no fire the Crows, Rooks and Jackdaws came into the trees above me and beat the branches with their wings until it sounded like a hurricane. Only one of the marvels, whilst I was there. Here you will find hospitality and guidance of the best kind; I have new skills!. The most comfortable camp I've ever had, facilities wise.

Beautiful, peaceful, woodland camping

You've only got to look at how many good reviews this place gets to know its rather special. It feels natural and peaceful but it is well managed in an eco friendly way. It feels like the owners have a passion to make the place what it is - peaceful, natural and eco friendly but with great facilities that nevertheless don't spoil the feel. Believe every word of the cool camping blurb. This place is superb. In addition to the info above, soft ground makes for easy pitching, and it has best compost toilet I've come across. Its the only one I've experienced that doesn't smell! Also there are some frozen water bottles you can use while your ice packs freeze in the onsite freezer. The facilities are on wooden huts which adds to the natural feel. The info on attractions nearby includes distances and a map which is handy. I was warmly welcomed by greg who is a lovely guy. There is also a friendly cat, a Friendly little dog (lucy - she is adorable) and some chickens wandering about. Top notch!!!

Wild camping without all the conveniences of a campsite....

We had a lovely long Bank Holiday weekend at Hole Station. The pitches are lovely and even on a 'busy' weekend it was like being out in the wild, all you could hear most of the time was the wildlife. We highly recommend the breakfasts on offer. We were recommended the local Lydford Gorge which was also wonderful and we had a great meal in the colourful local - The Junction Inn. We will be back!!!

A wonderful natural getaway

There are so many positive things about Hole Station. We were greeted warmly, the sites are all nestled in beautiful woodland where all you can hear is nature around you. The facilities are great. You can feel like you are by yourself at your pitch but are still in contact with reality.

Tranquil woodland stay

We have just arrived home from spending a wonderful five nights at this tranquil campsite. This was our second visit & we were looking forward to going again.

We opted for a ready erected tent as we are getting lazy! The tent was roomy & a safari type kitchen, table & chairs under a tarpaulin was included in the price. The cooking area is well kitted out with everything you could want (just take matches), even the water was already filled up. The pitches are well spaced out in wonderful deciduous woodland, you could not see your neighbours. There is the option to take your own tent, a tarpaulin cover & food storage cupboard (pesky varmint squirrels!!) are included on the pitch. Every pitch has its own fire bowl; logs are bought from reception at only £6 a sack. A cooking tripod can be hire as well. A fire helps keep the midges at bay & is a perfect way to spend an evening with a beer or two.

The whole site is very eco-friendly. Compost toilets are clean & a recycling area for everything. The showers are free & hot. There is space to wash up & freeze ice packs.

A Diner is available morning for breakfasts & evenings for dinners (closed Mondays I think). The food is delicious & a good breakfast sets you up for a days exploring.

We had daytime excursions to Lydford Gorge, Meeth Quarry, Meldon Reservoir & Viaduct & Bude. I must say that it was fantastic to return to the tranquillity of the woods after the hustle & bustle of Bude.

We also went on the three pub walk. This uses quiet lanes & has beautiful country side views. We did miss out the Golden Inn as opening times are limited, but stopped at the Half Moon Inn at Sheepwash (great cider!) & The Torridge at Black Torrington, a traditional country pub with great food, even had fish finger sandwiches much to the delight of my husband!

The owners, Greg & Liz are friendly & welcoming & are full of local knowledge. They are both passionate about the environment. They kindly let us put our moth trap out in the woods & we had some amazing moths in the mornings.

This is the campsite to visit if you want to escape modern life for a while, enjoy nature & chill out.

We look forward to visiting again.

Hole Station Adult only Campsite

Just returned from this amazing site and i can honestly say it does exactly as it says on the tin ...it really is a lovely place and you can see and appreciate the hard work and dedication to the maintenance of this beautiful area that the owners have achieved.

We stayed in the rent a tent option as only going for a few days and newbies to camping, its a great choice for convenience as you literally only need bedding,Beverages meaning Beer of course! food, matches, wash stuff and clothing.

The rent a tent option has airbeds already pumped up,a fully equipped sheltered kitchen area with gas hob stove, kettle, water in a holder with tap, washing up bowl, cool box, plates, cups etc, fire pit with tripod grill, a wooden table and seating under covered area ... i mean seriously how cool is that they have everything ready to roll ???

The pictures don't do it justice really it needs to be seen ...the Pitches are all slightly different and all have there own benefits but are all nicely spaced out so you have privacy which is a rarity on most sites and something we really wanted ( we aren't anti people just wanted peace and quiet and to feel like we had the woods to ourselves which is totally how it feels )

The site also consists of a very well kept eco toilet system, i had no idea what that meant before we left but on trying it out think its a great idea...basically number ones in one toilet and number two's in the dry toilet right next to it....very well kept ,hygienic and environmentally friendly plus enjoyed reading the information poster all about the history/benefits of this toilet system well using it : )

There is also a hole station diner that serves food and drinks mornings and evenings every day except Mondays as i recall with a nice covered seating area (I.can't remember the serving times so ask the owner) but thought this was a brilliant idea and you can take the food back to your camp area if you bring your plates with you as well.

There is a well kept rubbish recycling area, electric showers, communal washing up station,Wood packs to buy for the fire pits, Freezer in the communal washing up area for ice packs etc and they also fill it with water bottles for you, electric charging point, water refill point, information point with Map and areas of interest but Greg the Owner is great at telling you where to Visit, local shop opening times etc and is very helpful.

There is also the many lovely Animals to appreciate...Dogs,cat ( the beast of hole station) Goats,Horses and Chickens...all adding to the brilliant experience that is Hole Station Campsite !!! Loved It ...Thank you for a peaceful, relaxing few days in a well kept beautiful woodland campsite.

We have just got home from Hole Station. What an amazing place, fantastic pitches set right in the woods. It really has what you need to get away and relax.  Greg who runs it, I cannot thank him enough I had to change my dates due to work and he was very accommodating. Great holiday, cannot wait to go back.

Magical Place

My husband and I stayed here for two nights. There aren't many words to describe this place. All I can say is that we both felt it was a really magical place. Greg & Liz were really helpful and friendly. On the first night of our stay, we experienced a lot of rain and although we did not even think of changing our pitch, Greg very kindly offered us a drier pitch the next day and he was really nice about it. They have a few goats, horses, chickens and of course a very cute cat called Mini. She loves sitting on peoples cars and we found her adorable. This place is a must see and I think everyone who enjoys a relaxing camping experience, should visit the Hole Station.

Shhh Don't tell everyone!

Loved it! What more do you need to say!

Stayed for a week in July, 3 of us in rent a tents. Travelling by motorcycle, made so much easier with everything you need provided, even down to candles (but watch out for the Ninja Squirrels, they have a liking for them!).

We've stayed at plenty of sites that promise peace and tranquillity with the back to nature touch, but few seem to manage it, Hole Station definitely does. Maybe it's the lack of kids, the attitude of other guests, the surroundings or Greg and Liz's way of life,  but it definitely works!

Made friends with the goats, chickens (who seem to like a bike as a perch, adds a new meaning to "biker chick "), dogs and the cat. Plenty of wildlife around too. Pubs within walking distance, and plenty to see and do in the area, all help to make it an ideal place.

The facilities may not be to everyone's taste, but are right for the site, and actually very good. Don't knock a compost loo till you try one, pretty much odour free and spotless, as for the electric showers, better than many, many sites we've stayed on.

Will definitely be returning.

Peace & relaxation

Spent a couple of nights at Hole Station and the end of June (2014). Greeted on arrival by Liz who invited us to walk the site and select our pitch. All the pitches are well spaced and offer a degree of privacy not normally available on a camp site. Our pitch (no 8)  was roomy enough for two moderately large tents and equipped with a tarp dining shelter, fire pit and a bench. As soon as we arrived everything seemed to slow down and we were soon seduced by the seclusion and quiet, save for the bird song and breeze passing through the trees, into a state of relaxation. If you are looking for somewhere to wind down and enjoy the company of friends this is the site for you.

great experience

We spent a couple of nights here in spring (2013). We showed up very late but one of the owners appeared and gave us the tour, which we really appreciated. Very friendly and accommodating owners throughout our stay. The camp site wasn't particularly quiet, but it didnt feel too loud either, just some sounds of life and other campers.

Really nice woodland experience and run by some very friendly and helpful owners. We would definitely stay again and recommend to our friends!

Oh Sweet Solitude

I spent a glorious 3 nights here in September 2013. I stayed on pitch 18 - also known as 'the loner's pitch'. I love everything about this campsite. The good sized pitches, the bench and campfire and the very welcome shelter. We didn't have much rain, but it protected me from falling acorns. I would definitely recommend this camp site if you really want to get away from it all and connect with nature. The woodland really comes alive at night and the sounds you hear are incredible. Not for the faint-hearted if camping solo. I loved it, but a friend came to visit for one night only and said she was petrified of all the strange sounds. I will most definitely be staying here again. What a wonderful  place, with friendly owners and lovely Lucy the dog.

I stayed here in August 2013 and found it to be a lush little place. The staff were really welcoming, including the little Jack Russell who guided me around the different pitches. Each pitch feels secluded and peaceful in the woodland and I had a very restful night's sleep. It['s so nice to be able to have a real camp fire and here, the logs and kindling are provided for a small charge. There are some lovely pubs just a short and beautiful walk down the lane too.

I would highly recommend this site!

Perfect campsite!

We stayed at Hole Station in June 2013 and had a wonderful time. Such a perfectly peaceful place. We used the rent a tent pitch and it was amazing....everything we needed and more was provided for us. Such a relaxing option - no stress of pitching our tent or drying it out before heading home. We were walking on the beach less than an hour after arriving on site. Loved being able to have a camp fire every night. Thank you so much to Greg and Liz for creating this wonderful site and for their advice especially about cycling and walking routes. Loved our stay here - one of those places I want to tell everyone about and yet at the same time want to keep it a secret all to myself!

Camping at its best!

We stayed at hole station for two nights in August 2013, it is absolutely amazing! We stayed on pitch 23 which, even though close to everything felt like we were the only ones there! It was so cosy and perfect being able to have a camp fire at night (with fire pack bought from Greg!). Everything about hole station is great and our only complaint is that we had to go home!

Pitch perfect

Hole station is an absolute gem of a campsite. It’s difficult to imagine any tweak at all which would improve it. The whole set-up is so sympathetically done, yet with such an exacting eye for detail, that you can only doff your hat to Greg the owner and thank him from the bottom of your much replenished heart. Very easy to get to following the website directions, you’ll find yourself in a small woodland heaven in the heart of some of Devon’s best and yet quietest countryside. The handful of pitches are magically scattered off a winding circular track through the trees. Each pitch has a thoughtfully provided shelter, fire-pit and log seating alongside a clearing for your tent. It’s a delight to do the whole circuit, exploring each vacant pitch, before choosing your own (that’s the most difficult part). The compost toilet block is never more than 60m away and is so well maintained (and explained) that I for one am a convert. This is true camping for people who come to really appreciate this beautiful environment. There is lovely cycling or walking in every direction and nearby pubs for an early pint or two (you wouldn’t miss the fire now would you?) we look forward to going back soon.

Hole Station Adult Only Campsite

What a fantastic place to stay. My wife and I stayed for four nights. The first day we arrived it was pouring with rain and we broke our tent putting it up!!! We went to nearest Tesco and bought an emergency one. As it was still raining Greg the owner let us stay in his pre-erected tent free of charge for the night. There is lots to do if you want to go out or just stay in and have a camp fire... the only sounds you can hear are the animals. Best of all is the delicious sausages and bacon Greg sells are locally produced. The showers were always nice and hot. I cannot fault in any way and have already booked another visit for August....cant wait!

Hole Station Adult Only Campsite

We stayed in Hole Station for three nights in May over the Bank Holiday weekend. We arrived quite early, and Greg was there to meet us. He showed us around and gave us a layout of the site and allowed us to have a walk around and choose which pitch we wanted. They are all great, but we opted for number 5 as it was off the main path and was very private. The pitches are perfect, nice and flat and each one comes with a kitchen shelter with wooden benches. We loved the campfires and the log kits from reception are perfect.

There are plenty of locally sourced delicious produce to buy too, including homemade ice-cream with flavors such as malty munch, double choc chip and raspberry ripple! Also. eggs straight from the onsite hens as well as amazing sausages and bacon for cooking on the campfire for breakfast!

On one day we hired bikes from the site, and went for a lovely cycle on the quiet lanes that surround the campsite. We had lots of nice walks too in the area and the 'Torridge Inn' nearby served some great pub grub.

We just loved Hole Station, they have thought of everything and strike a nice balance between being on hand to help if you need it, bit also leaving you to do your own thing. We would recommend it to anyone and everyone! We just wish they allowed dogs, or will allow dogs in the future!!

Hole Station Adult Only Campsite

We echo all the other reviews on here - we had a fantastic week at Hole Station, it was the perfect campsite for us and definitely the place to go to relax and get away from it all. Set in woodlands, each pitch is secluded and has its own cooking shelter (not that we needed it as it was sunny every day!) and fire pit. Greg and his wife who run the site are very helpful and friendly, and stocked some great local food (we recommend the fig yoghurt!). Lots of interesting birds and animals to see on the campsite, there are horses, goats and chickens and we also saw a barn owl.

There was plenty of activities to do nearby, we hired bikes from the campsite and toured the local area, stopping for a swim in a local river. The coast is nearby for surfing, and Dartmoor for hiking. The local pub (20mins walk) served a good pint and meal.

Probably the best campsite we've been to in the UK and we'll be coming back!

Hole Station Adult Only Campsite

I camped here a year ago during the extremely wet Spring bank holiday. High winds and persistent rain meant that most people camping at other sites gave up or got evicted, but the shelter provided by the trees at Hole Station sheltered us from the worst of it. There was a very warm welcome when we arrived, which extended to providing us with a quickly erected tent for the first night so that we didn't have to cope with putting our 8 person tent up (there were only 3 of us!) in the pouring rain after a very long journey.

This was the loveliest site I've ever stayed at - the trees give you a lot of privacy and space from other campers. I like the site's approach to sustainability and the environment. If you haven't tried compost toilets, try them! They're cleaner and less smelly than flushing ones at many sites!  I look forward to returning here as soon as I can!

Hole Station Adult Only Campsite

After reading reviews this site really lived up to my expectations.  If I was pushed to list the best thing about this site it would be the fact that there are no children allowed!  The only noises we heard at night and in the morning were the wildlife, ideal.  The facilities were clean and did their job and there was hot water for the showers.  My only (tiny) suggestion would be that there were more toilets available, as we visited during a bank holiday weekend when the site was full,  in the mornings there could be a queue for both the toilets and the showers.  Having said that, if you time it right, you can avoid the queues.  We enjoyed being able to have a log fire, rare on most campsites, and the shelter on each pitch is a great idea.  Greg is very helpful and friendly,  giving us maps to borrow so we could find our way to the local pubs and information about local events.  They have done a great job with this site and we will definitely return.

Hole Station Adult Only Campsite

The most perfect peaceful campsite we have stayed at. If you want to be woken by the beautiful sound of bird song and nothing else. If you want to pitch your tent in a beautiful clearing in the woods, with loads of space. If you want to spend your evenings around a campfire watching the embers die down as the sun goes down. If you are fed up of trying to get some peace & quiet on your camping trip and have to put up with the kids in the next pitch kicking a ball against your tent in a field full of people. Then this is the site for you.

Yes they have facilities of the eco / compost variety, but they are clean and in keeping with the ethos of the site. I would not have wanted it any other way. Initially you do think oh my god we have to move all our gear by wheel barrow but once you have pitched you soon realise why. Each pitch comes with a shelter to sit under, so no excuse to not light the fire every night whatever the weather, which was great when the typical British weather did it's thing. At reception there is also some local produce available. We tried pretty much all of it but can only wax lyrical about the local yoghurt's and ice creams. They lived up to expectations. The only downfall was we were not there long enough to try all the flavours - something to look forward to when we return.

I could tell you which pitch we had, as I think it was the best one, as we could not see any other tent or hear anyone else ( we had full choice as we arrived on the Thursday before the Bank Holiday ) but then it may be taken when we return and something's are best kept secret..Loved it all well done Greg.. Watch out for Lucy the cutest little dog which followed us around.

Hole Station Adult Only Campsite

Just back from a great Bank Holiday weekend, brilliant campsite, Greg and Liz offer a friendly welcome and the site feels like a true back to nature experience. The pitches are dotted around a woods, each has a pre erected shelter and campfire area. Just buy your logs and get the fire going, you can rent a grill and cook over a log fire - brilliant. There are pubs in the local villages, but to be honest we loved staying at our pitch with the fire going all night, watching the stars. Facilities are just fine, and the Eco-friendly side is really well done without being intrusive - all in all a well thought out site with lots of great touches. Have to admit to thinking twice about posting a review - this one is a real find.

Back to nature camping made easy

We visited this site in September 2011. When we arrived we were the only people on the campsite so it was very quiet (a bit spooky at night in fact!). We stayed in one of the rent-a-tents, as we had had enough of taking a wet tent home with us! These were just regular tents, with a airbed in them. You got your own under cover cooking area with everything you needed to cook with, plus a chimnea, which we enjoyed huddling in front of in the cold September evenings! You could buy wood and local produce from reception and the nearest supermarket was a short drive away. We were made to feel very welcome by the owners and appreciated the efforts they go to to make the site environmentally sustainable. We enjoying visiting the local area, we went on a lovely walk at a gorge (National Trust) and visited Bude one day too. There were just two of us but I think it would be better to come in a group next time, I can imagine it would be great with all your friends sat under the under cover cooking area.

Hole Station

Enjoyable stay, and despite 10 hours of heavy rain we managed to stay dry. Very large and flat pitch, about 5 mins walk to the facilities. The toilets are clean, and the instructions are clearly labelled, however we did have to queue on occasions as there’s only two toilets. The shower was lovely and hot. Excellent recycling facilities, and fresh eggs available each morning.

Hole Station

what a great place to stay. We ejoyed it even having to leave our beloved camper parked in the car park and used a wheel barrow to take our bedding and food to our rent a tent with it’s own dinning tent and fire pit in a wooded clearing. If you like a quiet peaceful place to stay it’s here compost toilets and all . Just a short walk from a pub 15mins along the cycle path which is just outside the campsite. At night sat around a campfire with a glass of wine looking up to the stars what more can you ask for? we will be back there soon.
