A beautiful countryside spot in Devon with a range of pitches, from grassy open spaces to off-grid woodland clearings, topped off by two well-stocked fishing lakes

A campsite that caters for everyone is a difficult thing to provide, and it’s fair to say that not everyone gets it right. Providing the luxury of high-end glamping, the off-grid natural atmosphere for campers and hard-standing spaces for caravans is always a tricky mix. But there are one or two places that pull it all off seamlessly. The Kingsmead Centre,on the border of Devon and Somerset, is just such a site, where everyone you meet wears the grin of utter contentment. Here there truly is something for everyone, and with only a few precious spots available it's a site to snap up fast, however you choose to stay.

Divided into a top and bottom field, the seven sloping acres of meadowy heathland boast a toilet block at either end of the gradient. In the lower field are open, well-spaced pitches that leave room for kids to play. Harder ground can be found in the upper field, along with electrified spots for caravans and campers. Some of the best areas, though, are found by delving into the woods and pitching a tent in one of the natural clearings dotted about – a real slice of wilderness within an already beautiful campsite.

Glampers hoping to arrive with just a toothbrush and their jim-jams are also in luck. There's a parked-up showman’s caravan (more of the modern day travellers kind, than the horse-drawn type of old!) decked from head to toe like a furnished, self-catered home, there’s a furnished Lily Pad Belle Tent, tall enough for parents to stand up in and there’s also a spectacular yurt, set in its own woodland glade. The lattice work of the traditional structure is wonderfully exposed inside, while the light, cream canvas gives an airy outdoor feel.

Along the lower end of the campsite, what we have named ‘the woods’ are, in fact, a shielding flank of trees that hide away another of the campsite’s features. Following a footpath beneath the canopy, it’s a 30-metre walk to the first of two fishing lakes, built for the exclusive use of Kingsmead Centre. Rod licenses are cheaply and easily available from the post office, so the lakes offer a good chance for families to try casting their very first fishing line. The lakes are also surrounded by forestry commission land and colourful wildflower meadows, and footpaths and bridleways stretch into the beautiful Blackdown Hills – top territory for walkers, cyclist and equestrians. If you’re particularly keen you can even bring along your own horse and graze it in the neighbouring field!

All in all the campsite exudes a warm, family-friendly atmosphere that reflects the welcoming personalities of hosts Tristan and Jodie (along with Pickles the dog). The site is also brilliantly placed for all the delights of this part of Devon, with beaches within easy driving distance, a cluster of pleasant market towns and a host of excellent village pubs.

The Kingsmead Centre has a very gentle slope with a stepper slope dividing the upper field, where a toilet block is located, and the lower field, with a second ablutions block. Electric hook ups are available in both spaces, or for a more wild experience you can also pitch off-grid in the woods at the bottom of the site. Shower and toilet facilities are simple and clean, with no shortage of free hot water. Campfires are allowed in fire-pits only (you can bring your own or rent onsite) and there is a communal fire area located in the a central wooded copse. The campsite has two fishing lakes. The Woodland lake is the smaller of the two, located on the same level as the lower camping field. The Kingsmead Centre's yurt, set in its own woodland glade, features: a double bed, double futon, wood burner including logs and cooking facilities. The 1980's showman's wagon is exceedingly well equipped with a fully fitted kitchen, glamorous furnishings and absolutely everything you require including WiFi, TV with freeview box and a selection of games, cards and books.

The site has maps and leaflets available explaining the best routes nearby and Jo and Tristan are also a wealth of local knowledge. Equestrians can also space in the neighbouring field to graze their horses. By car the coast is naturally a popular destination with top beaches within a 45 minute drive as well as beautiful Dartmoor National Park(01626 832093), but closer to home towns like Honiton(01404 43716), with its rows of red-brick Regency housing, and Tiverton, home to a fine Georgian church, make for fabulous stopping points to explore. Food & Drink

Two miles away, the Half Moon Inn (01823 680291) is a good choice and makes for a pleasant walk from the campsite. The pub is located in the centre of Clayhidon Parish and offers a stunning view from their beer garden of the Culm Valley as it opens towards Hemyock. They offer a great selection of local food at affordable prices; particularly famous for their Sunday lunch and Friday evening fish and chips (served between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m). The Holman Clavel(01823 421070) in Culmhead hosts a great range of locally made ales and their very own ‘Tricky’ Cider. Local takeaways also deliver direct to the site.

Absolutely enjoyable

A very well thought out site coping with the Covid situation. Beautiful surroundings and accommodation, very peaceful and relaxing. Highly recommended

Quiet woodland break

This woodland campsite is down a narrow lane. No bother for us as we stayed in Snowdrop. We were cosy and warm for our September week. We loved listening to the owls. Our small dog (Rosie) also enjoyed her stay. The fire pit was great as was the outdoor cooker. The facilities were clean and just for our use due to the pandemic. We will be back!

Peaceful, welcoming, accommodating, beautiful spot

The yurt was spacious and great to stay in. Lots of privacy, fire site outside and wood burning stove inside. Well equipped. Wonderful shower and clean toilets and shoer block Hosts very welcoming and always available if needed A really beautiful spot for a lovely break. Would recommend to all

5 of us stayed in one of the static caravans for one week. The caravan was very clean and spacious. The added bonus was having the veranda to sit and eat outside (weather permitting). One small negative was the sofa bed not very comfortable (maybe the owners could invest in putting an extra mattress on it). The Hospitality was good and nothing was too much, doing daily rounds to make sure everything was ok. The sight was in beautiful surroundings. We very much enjoyed our holiday and was very lucky with the weather.

Quiet, relaxing and beautiful

We really loved Kingsmead Centre. First family break this year due to lockdown and it was such a relief to have booked somewhere that turned out so perfect. It's a well connected location that feel remarkably remote whilst being in easy distance to pubs and towns. The static caravans were well appointed and clean - perfect for the family and 2 dogs. The fishing ponds on site provided plenty of family fun (with the requisite rod license) and the fire pits in the evenings with the obligatory marshmallows were lots of fun. Easy to recommend and will look to go again.

Lovely peaceful site.

Stayed in the Oaks static caravan for a week as a small family group. Home was really nice and clean and complete with everything you need to enjoy a week's peace and quiet in the countryside. Our 3 year old daughter loved exploring the woods and going down to the fishing lake. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Thoroughly recommended if you just need a bit of quiet time.

Perfect GetAway

Quick wifi, away from civilization, with perfect hosts and brilliant accommodation! Loved every second, with my partner :)

Lovely rural site

We had a lovely few days here, with great walks and a good pitch-very quiet and pretty. Only downside was no laundry or toilets due to COVID, which is very responsible but did affect our experience.

Lovely place, lovely folk

Our static caravan was very clean and comfy. We (my partner, children - 5 & 8 - and I) visited in July 2020 in the first week of reopening post-lockdown. I gather there were therefore fewer items in the caravan than normal (bare minimum of plates and cutlery, no board games, no books or dvds) which was oddly reassuring. There were also far fewer guests than capacity: slightly weird but peaceful, and the owners seemed amazingly laid back about this. A gorgeous woodland location, lily pad ponds, not hard to find by satnav, very friendly owners, very friendly owners' dog, marshmallows (not provided!) toasted on the firepit. I thoroughly recommend this place.

Safe, sunny, silent, ......super!

We loved Kingsmead Centre. Our first time away out of lockdown for two tired key workers, it was perfect. Great location hidden away in the countryside, but convenient for the M5 and a choice of north or south coast, if you fancy a dip. We loved our evening walks around the lily pond, and being able to use the public footpath from the site to make circular walks to the village. The firepit with logs and kindling was a lovely touch, if only we had remembered the marshmallows. Very well appointed static caravan, plenty of room and very cosy with the central heating on. Looking for excuses to return!

Best campsite this holiday!

Beautiful woodland campsite with excellent facilities and pitches. We loved our private pitch nestled in the forest. It was peaceful and beautiful. The owners were also very accomodating of our late arrival. Our only wish is that we had booked more nights there!

Beautiful and relaxing

Had a lovely weekend. Had a hiccup with the booking over the internet. No fault of either side. But the owners sorted everything out once we got there so friendly and helpful. Place was beautiful there were loads of things to buy in the little shop on site and rent fire pits and everything nice and clean. Location was great right in the middle, went to Torquay one day and Ilfracombe the next about 1hr either way the drive and scenery were lovely. Plenty around to do. Very pleased with our little family holiday. Thank you very much. Will see you soon. X

A beautiful and chilled out site

A beautiful and chilled out site that encourages camp fires with fire pits provided - We stayed in one of the Woodland clearings which created a natural vibe and a personal space. We felt as if we were deep in the woods yet it was only a short stroll to the clean shower and toilet facilities.

Back to nature!

A beautiful and peaceful site that encourages camp fires with fire pits provided - a winning combination. We stayed in one of the Woodland clearings for an authentically natural stay. The lakes are well stocked but mostly tiddlers at the moment so patience needed but this was perfect for our first family foray into coarse fishing.

Blissful and perfect

Beautiful site among the trees, lovely grounds to walk around. We were lucky with a quiet weekend so could nestle away in the corner of the site with a campfire. Good clean facilities, helpful owners and an excellent pub a 30 minute walk away!

Lovely but a bit crowded

The grounds are nice and the staff friendly, good for if you don't particularly want to do wild camping. A bit crowded and family friendly so can be noisy

Lovely location

We stayed on this site for 2 nights in our motorhome, it was such a lovely site with great space for our accommodation. It was very peaceful and quiet, the facilities were very good and we were more than happy with the cost of our pitch

Good campsite, good value.

We stayed in the medowfields with our dog. You can drive right up to your pitch. Very dog friendly and my dog made lots of other doggy friends on the campsite. If I were to give the sight a rating out of 100% I think I would give it a 98%, the only reason for the missing 2% is because the lock on the shower I used was broken and so was the thing that holds the shower to the wall. Over all I think the site is VERY GOOD VALUE for money. We stayed there because the site is about a 50 minute drive away from Lyme Regis and we enjoyed going there very much.

Peaceful woodland experience

Stayed in the Lily Pad Bell Tent for a few nights. Wonderful shade provided by the trees, and the pitch itself was very secluded. Spent some time in solitude by the lake; the site did get busier when the school holidays started but that didn't bother us. Excellent facilities, and very friendly. Will be returning.

Fantastic weekend

With the weather forecast as sunny we decided to do a last minute weekend away in the tent with the family. The campsite we originally planned to go to was fully booked and I'm glad it was as the kingmead was a great find!! We booked on the Thursday to go on the Friday online which was quick and easy. We added on the electric hook up so camped in the field closest to the toilet facilities and reception and were able to pitch up next to our other family members with loads of room around. We had 6 children between us who were on stop running around as there was so much space even with others around. Our dog had a fantastic time in the dog walking field and we had no issues with any other dogs. The toilet facilities were amazing and so clean! (Best shower I've had camping!) In the community area we had use of a fridge freezer which was needed for ice creams - we also had the use of 2 sinks for our dishes which was an added bonus. We have already recommend this place to family and are planning a return visit!

Quiet, peaceful, remote, back to nature camping.

We had a lovely welcome from Jodie, a really pleasant person. The pitch was wonderful surrounded by trees and wildlife. Wonderful toilet and showers, you could have fitted a double bed in both! The only downside for us was on the second day when Tristan ambled over with his dog off it's lead (States dogs to be kept on leads at all times) and reprimanded us about our radio being on at 11.00 in the morning! My wife and I are in our 60's and don't like excessive noise ourselves and we were chatting quite happily as the radio was not loud. Add to that, we were the only one's in that particular field did not make me very happy at all. After he left, he was smoking a cigarette and dropped it on the ground! Well, I suppose it is his site! And his dog left a deposit outside our awning, which I did not see and trod in with my slippers on! But apart from Tristan, we did enjoy our stay but would not go again after being told off like a couple of teenagers! Pete & Megs

Excellent Atmosphere under trees

It was fantastic, quiet and green. three excellent stays under the huge trees... The owners were very friendly, Thank you Jodie & Tristan.... The toilets and hot showers were clean and good. You can keep your meals in a fridge-freezer. If you want to forget and have a fresh time-break in your life it is a good choice

Three perfect summer nights

This was a really lovely stay. We'd attended a music festival in Devon and wanted to extend our trip for another three nights. Kingsmead was perfect. This is why: It was quiet and secluded. The owners were very friendly and welcoming with a laid-back manner. Clean toilets and good, hot showers were convenient. Little touches such as a full-length mirror in the Ladies' were appreciated. There was a fridge-freezer. We could hire fire pits and wood for campsite fires. Our August stay was greatly enhanced by the Wednesday night outdoor film showing, with excellent pizzas supplied by the Hilltop Pizza van.

Exactly what we needed

We needed somewhere to stay to break our journey from Leicester to Fowey and this was ideal. For a start it was convenient, being only a few miles from the M5. But what was also important was how helpful and accommodating was the lady who dealt with my initial phone call and subsequent e-mails about the best way of accommodating our party, and further phone calls about our late arrival and where we could go to eat. She could not have been more friendly and helpful. Having arrived late and needing to be away the next morning we didn't get to see much of the site but what we did see we felt very positive about - a nice relaxed vibe with a slightly out-of-the-mainstream feel to it. We would happily stay again.

Secluded Sanctuary

The Kingsmead centre is a superb find, a secluded sanctuary offering woodlands, private fishing lakes and top notch newly built facilities.  The site comfortable houses its permanent static caravans alongside pitches for tents and tourers alike. The hosts are always on hand and to assist in any way they can.  Friends and I have stayed here a few times now and I can’t recommend it enough.  Looking forward to my next stay at kingsmead!

Great location

Kingsmead is a fantastic campsite, set in a beautiful location. Tristan and Jodie are always really helpful with any queries and made sure we had a great stay. The newly added toilet blocks are brilliant and we loved the fire pits for the evening marshmallows!
