Stunning views over Croyde Bay – the beach is a stone's throw away

Thinking of Devon often evokes sepia-toned scenes of cream teas, chocolate-box cottages and rambling on wild Exmoor. Yet this genteel image of the county is only as true as you make it round these parts. Sure, there’s the traditional Devonian charm of sleepy village Georgeham; not to mention the typical seaside ‘candy-floss ‘n’ kiss-me-quick’ chic of the family resorts at Woolacombe. But if you’ve descended upon the North Devon coast with tent on back, board under arm and adventure on your mind, you’ve come to the right place – for Croyde Bay is undoubtedly England’s surf capital.

Acres of sand, pounding surf, and bronzed lifeguards... welcome to the Gold Coast. It may be a tad cooler than the Aussie version but, more importantly, it is much nearer for us Poms. Okay, so our cousins down under might enjoy near perma-sunny skies, but on an early summer morning, with the breeze just right, we’d take Croyde over Byron Bay any day of the week. With its lush green hills ravining down to blustery expanses of open beach, there’s no disputing the beauty of Croyde Bay. This wide sweep of dune-backed sand flanked by the finest field-green North Devon hills is the closest thing you’ll find to an Aussie surf beach in this part of the world, gifting awesome waves to pros and beginners alike.

Anyone lucky enough to secure a pitch at this long-running campsite will understand why owners Benny and Lou chose the name. As you drive here through a landscape dotted with campsites it’s not until you reach the very closest spot to the sea that this enviably elevated spot reveals itslef. For surfers, it’s ideal. Hours can pass as you scan the endless blue horizon for that elusive perfect wave. And from its priceless vantage point, Ocean Pitch is one of the few campsites in the area with direct beach views, meaning you can keep an eye on the surf from your, well, ‘ocean pitch’, and race down with your board when the waves are breaking. And if you’re not here for the surf, it’s just as great being able to wake up and see the ocean each morning while you cook your breakfast sausages. The stunning Croyde Bay provides a perfect canvas for this unparalleled campsite masterpiece, and the site is on the coastal path, so it’s easy to reach the neighbouring beaches on foot.

You may also be surprised to learn that Devon’s most famous daughter, none other than Agatha Christie, was an early surf pioneer who mastered the art of stand-up surfing in Waikiki. Horse riding on Croyde beach is a must-do experience, whether a leisurely beach trot or epic country trek, exploring Croyde on horseback is a great way to soak up the atmosphere. The family- run, pretention-free Roylands Riding Holidays is based in central Croyde and welcome experienced riders and first-timers all year round. Discover the area on two wheels by hopping on the Tarka Trail and exploring the beautiful coast and countryside. Bikes can be hired from Tarka Trail Cycle Hire (01271 813339) in Braunton.

There's on-site catering from Biffen's Kitchen, a suitably surf-inspired street food truck. Scoff a Devon cream tea at Centery Farm (01271 879603). The Thatch (01271 890349) pub is a lively surfers’ hangout with decent food. The Blue Groove (01271 890111) combines laid-back beach-bum vibe with trippy artwork and an internationally eclectic menu that includes Thai curries, Mexican pancakes and Japanese noodles. In the village of Georgeham, just inland, try the food and real ales at The Rock (01271 890322), where they do a great Sunday lunch and serve lunch and dinner daily in a light, bright conservatory. For some of the best fish and chips you’re likely to have on the North Devon coast, go to Squires Fish (01271 815533) in neighbouring Braunton. They’ve been frying the freshest Devon-caught fish here since 1969 and the stylish 2-floor restaurant attracts many celebrity admirers, not least Rick Stein. Find out more about organic farming and conservation at the dairy at West Hill Farm (01271 815477) and taste their wares. You can buy cold drinks and chocolate bars onsite, plush they have a cool retro slush puppy machine! Ivan's cool split screen, coffee-serving campervan also parks up in the peak season.

A stunning campsite!

Not just a great location right by Croyde Bay, but a friendly and warm welcome, and attention to detail in all those things that make your stay easy and pleasurable, such as a fridge and freezer, charging and showers to get the sand out of wet suits. It really is as good as the photos, and that perfect combination of laid back and friendly but very well-run and well-organised. We will definitely be back next year. Thank you so much!

I cannot recommend this campsite enough!

I came across Ocean Pitch last year when searching for a campsite in the Croyde/Woolacombe area. I feel so fortunate that I found this place. I have returned multiple times with both family and friends and it has always been fantastic. Everyone who has visited has loved it and wanted to come back. There are so many returning customers that I'm starting to worry that it will be fully booked if I don't plan my weeks off early enough for next year! Croyde Bay itself is absolutely beautiful and this campsite is so close to the beach. The views are stunning. It is set on the coastal path with Baggy Point around a 20 minute walk away - the sunsets from here are amazing. The village is 10 minutes down the road. There are plenty of places to eat and a few shops to browse. There is also a local craft market open certain days during the week/weekend. The people who own and work at Ocean Pitch really make the difference - everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful, you instantly feel welcome. There is always a really lovely mixture of campers of different ages from different locations. It is a great location for walking, surfing/bodyboarding, or just having a relaxing break by the beach. The facilities are really clean and well equipt. There are separate male and female toilets, showers and changing areas with a socket for hairdryers etc. The showers are always hot and there is no additional charge - this is much appreciated after being in the sea bodyboarding/surfing. You can hire wetsuits, bodyboards, surf boards and paddle boards on site which is really convenient. The staff are always happy to give advice and guidance. There is also a cold shower outside for rinsing off and cleaning your wetsuit. The pitches are flat and absolutely adequate for the tent size that they advise. There is a dish washing area with washing up liquid provided. There is also an outdoor table tennis table, enjoyed by both children and adults and a seating area by Biffin's Kitchen so you can sit outside and enjoy the food and views. Biffin's Kitchen is based on site and the food available at breakfast and dinner is incredible. Really delicious meat, vegetarian and vegan options with the evening cuisine theme changing on a daily basis. Beyond the amazing views, delicious food and great facilities, I think what really sets it apart is the lovely atmosphere that the owners have created. I cannot recommend this campsite enough!

Big Wednesday

The campsite was simple, unadorned, tasteful and everything in it showed a keen eye for subtle, understated details, like the satisfyingly woody toilet blocks painted in jolly washed-out seaside colors, and the main office with its fridge full of drinks, the handles on the rubbish bins, the small oil paintings in the toilet cubicles. The setting could not bettered, as one could see the waves from the tent and one fell asleep to the booming surf every night. The staff, were all young, but thoroughly professional, courteous, well-informed, relaxed without being careless, keen to please without being obsequious - nothing was too much for them - and they were always around when you needed them. There was also, helpfully, a funky food van serving delicious breakfasts and dinners for those of us too lazy to walk into town. In fact, there was really no need to go anywhere if one didn't want to, everything was there: the views, the facilities, the flowers, the beach, the food, the drink. Close to Paradise.

A FABULOUS campsite in an amazing location

I worry about leaving too good a review about this campsite as it will end up being over run! But I have to give it credit where credit is due. It really is the most fabulous campsite, Benny and his crew are super helpful, polite and the campsite is the most immaculate I have ever stayed at. Nothing is too much trouble for any of them we will definitely be back .

Amazing campsite

The site is in an absolutely beautiful place and everything you could need is contained in the site. Its got a nice consistant look to it and because it only has 30 spots yoi feel very well looked after. The campsite is clean, well organised, and competantly run. The staff are absolutely great and very accommodating. They obviously take a lot of pride in the sitw and the service. Would recommend to anyone especially surfers.

Fab views and fab location

Visited this campsite over the Easter BH weekend and loved it. It was clean and well organised, good recycling facilities, friendly and helpful staff and the views were breathtaking.. Only a short walk to the fab beach which was great with the kids. We had a fab weekend will definitely visit again.

Spectacular beach view and the best bacon sarnie ever!!

What an incredible view of the beach from our campervan, which was only a 2 minute walk away. The site has a food hut which makes the most amazing breakfast sandwich, not to mention a delicious goat stew. All the staff are really professional and happy to help with anything. We had a little convo with the chef whilst he made our food and one of them even played a little bit of football with me and my brother. Great facilities on site, clean toilets and hot showers, which we well needed after Storm Hannah! Already planning the next trip with mum & dad...

A Gem!

Well what can i say, it's just a fantastic campsite with beautiful views, just few min walk away to the beach. The campsite is so well run by a very friendly and relax young team. They will do everything to make your stay plaisant and they are so professional. Toilets and showers are very clean. We are going back next year, can't wait!

Honestly. I’d go there again!!

A friendly and personal camping experience in the most ideal spot in Croyde. Nothing beats waking up and unzipping your tent to check the surf conditions. Great facilities, clean and hot showers, and very friendly staff. The owners are the epitome of cool. Working hard to ensure the campsite runs without a fault whilst keeping an eye on the surf for a late sundown session. If you like a campsite with a personal touch rather than the massive corporate sites then this is for you. Would love to stay again. Thanks!

Best beach camping

Just returned from three fantastic nights at Ocean Pitch. Can't recommend the site highly enough. Ben, Lou and their wonderful team run a very friendly site with amazing views of Croyde beach and excellent facilities. The cleanest campsite toilets I've ever seen along with constant hot showers and a cold outdoor shower for rinsing your wetsuits. Full wetsuit and board hire available from the site at reasonable prices. The team go out of their way to help you and are full of good advice about the local area. We will be back soon.

A warm welcome

I loved this site! Not only is it perfectly situated, a stones throw from the beach, with stunning views of the surf, the team who run the site are so warm, friendly and helpful. I was the only adult in my party of 4, the kids (ages 9-14) where about as helpful as a chocolate teaset when it came to pitching and packing up.  But the staff, noting my muffled expletives as I flapped around under billowing canvas, pitched in to help!  It's also spotlessly clean. The only possible improvement would be to raise and rotate the washing up station (and provide a shelter), so you could wash up without bending over if you're over 5'4" and watch the waves rolling in!!

Just returned from ocean pitch - it's a little piece of heaven. Very chilled out, but with incredibly friendly and hard working staff. Great advice on surf and SUP equipment and a great location (so close to the beach) to boot!

We'll definitely be back!

1st class!!

Found this campsite through this website and we were not disappointed! We were travelling down to Devon and booked this on the way to check in on the night and what a really good surprise we had! From our arrival, the team were 1st class! Very welcoming and very chilled out but they also worked tirelessly to ensure that the site was imaculate and it was, but also to answer the many queries and requests from the guests. I received some great routes to go running which took me along some of north Devons finest views. We were also lucky enough to have the best pitch on the site, to which one it is? Well you will just have to go and find it for yourselves! Massive thanks for such a great time see you next year!!

Excellent surprise

We called here on an impromptu trip to North Devon and they were so accommodating. Superb facilities and the staff were super friendly and helpful. Our site was mobbed by seagulls whilst we were out surfing (our fault for leaving out some bread) and they stepped in and rescued our stuff! We left them a case of beer as a thanks. Honestly one of the best sites I have stayed in. Location, staff, facilities and setting are perfect!!!

We went during the gold coast festival when it was really busy and even then the facilities were clean and the staff were really friendly and nice. It's got a really nice relaxed atmosphere, I'd definitely book it again.
