Never has there been a campsite more aptly named. It took this reviewer 20 minutes and two phone calls to find the place, despite the satnav indicating that I was around 200 metres away. Persevere, though, and the determined camper is rewarded with a brilliant little piece of England to call their own. Our tip is to look out for the sign for Moor Lane Nursery as, rather sweetly, the day-to-day business here is growing and selling gorgeous plants.

What this means is that the whole place is beautifully designed, with stunning plants at every turn. A stroll through the site is a revelation, revealing nooks and crannies peppered with comfy chairs, a barbecue, picnic tables and a wishing well along with essential amenities such as a fridge-freezer, microwave, kettle and so on. Its proximity to Croyde Beach means that it’s a favoured hangout of the surf crowd but, thanks to its tranquil, private vibe, it attracts the more chilled variety of surfer. There’s unspoilt countryside in every direction and you’ll share your stay with butterflies, owls, egrets, bats and dragonflies (plus the lovely Steve and family – this is their home and they'll be on hand to accommodate in any way). Back to nature, then, but with the bonus of the lively village of Croyde just down the road.

Peaceful and pleasant find

We booked for two nights at the starting end of a busy bank holiday weekend for the site. Our two teenagers loved the space and we loved the set-up with great showers and a handy indoor kitchen area. The atmosphere was ordered but relaxed with plenty of secret spots for chilling out. We hope to return.

Unique, peaceful and tranquil.

After being told by our daughter, who stayed here for two nights on a school trip, that it was "the best campsite I had ever been to" we just had to come and check it out. Our stay was brief, just two nights, but wonderful. The campsite is peaceful and tranquil, with lovely views over the hills. The showers and toilets were clean and plentiful for the number of pitches. There is a choice of outside or inside washing up, with use of fridge, kettle and toaster in the communal kitchen with seating area (and ability to charge phones!). The mazes of paths through the gardens are a wonder; beautiful plants and flowers with little hidden seating areas, an absolute delight, especially for the children, every walk back to the camp was a different route. Steve was very welcoming and had lots of interesting information about the local area. We will definitely return and stay for longer next time, and hope to go on one of the evening walks to discover the secrets of the dunes. We borrowed the bricks to have a BBQ one evening, and next time intend to make use of the communal fire pit in the evening. Really easy to get to the local beaches, very close to Braunton (although you wouldn't know it) and out to the rest of the area. Quiet and peaceful but children are very welcome. Really friendly owners. Two nice size fields, which makes it seem smaller than it is due to the hedge in the middle which is nice. Overall if you are looking for a unique campsite, enjoy peaceful camping and don't mind children, in a beautiful part of the world, close to some amazing beaches and wonderful sea to play in (from the expert surfer to those who just want to paddle), this is the site for you. Thank you for an amazing stay, we will be back.

Serene, well managed and fab location

Secret Spot is an absolute gem, a small place with a very peaceful atmosphere. The owners are extremely helpful and friendly, and clearly put a lot of effort into the management of the site, with its spotless facilities and beautiful gardens. On a lazy day you can chill with a good book, surrounded by gorgeous flowers and a small pond. It’s situated very close to Braunton Burrows, which is an amazing landscape to explore and a 30 min walk across it will take you to Saunton sands. Overall we’ve had nothing but a lovely experience the 2 times we’ve been, and will certainly be camping here again.

A little piece of heaven

Having returned to camping after a few years off I couldn’t believe my luck to have found such a perfect site!! I have returned twice in the space of a few weeks, once with my family and once alone. The site is perfectly located to explore the beautiful North Devon area, the facilities are great, especially the campers hut, with fridges, toaster, kettle and very comfy sofas. Perfect to hide in when the weather is bad and to congregate. The whole site, toilets and showers are exceptionally clean too. And the gardens, with all the hidden seating areas and campfire just add to the relaxed, loved feeling. But what makes this site special are the owners (and the dog!). From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and nothing we asked was ever too much trouble. Steve has great knowledge of the area, many great stories to tell and can direct you to all the spots not usually on the radar. I will go back again and again!!!! Thank you so much for welcoming me Steve, Jo and Ash!!

Response from Secret Spot Camping

Anna Thank-You for that lovely review! It was a pleasure having you and your family here and look forward to seeing you again! Steve, Jo and Ash.

Quiet, well-managed, family site

The site achieves its stated objectives. We liked the fact that it was restricted to tents and small camper vans, with no hard-standing, electric hookups or other facilities that caravans seem to require. The field was never full during our stay, despite it being school summer holidays. The toilets and showers were always kept clean (without having the daily 30 minute closure that happens in some large commercial sites) and we never had to queue. We particularly appreciated the self-serve fridge, freezer, electric kettle and toaster plus the lounge area on cooler evenings. The site is close to the Tarka Trail for family cycling and good beaches. The Tesco supermarket in Braunton is handy and can be reached via lanes, avoiding the permanent town centre traffic jam.

Lovely Simple Site

We loved staying here, as a relaxed group of girls we want a campsite that was relaxed enough to have a single group but not so relaxed that we felt unsafe. This was perfect! Very simple site and lovely family feel, with the owners being so helpful and lovely! Garden area and kitchen area is brilliant with amazing "camping bonus'" such as the kettle and microwaves. The toilet facilities are very simple and the unisex factor was a little odd, however wasn't an issue. Facilities were generally very clean!

What a find!

This campsite has it all with two lovely camping fields on either side of the well thought out central amenities. Plenty of free showers( with lots of space and hooks) Loo’s sinks and pot wash areas. The campers kitchen is a real bonus with kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge. Camping made easy! The garden was our real highlight. It’s been designed to have lots of cosy corners with chill out furniture (the rocking sun chair was my favourite) and meandering pathways were great for games of hide and seek. Steve and Jo were really helpful offering top tips on places to go and how to get there. The site is really well placed for easy access to The Tarka Trail and local beaches at Saunton and Croyde. Even though it’s a secret it’s easy to find and access. Highly recommended. But keep it 🤫 we don’t want everyone to know!

A quiet and idyllic spot

I don't want to tell anyone about this lovely campsite! It needs to stay a secret 😂 A great location, away from the bustle but within walking distance of Braunton and a short scenic drive to the fantastic beaches along this coast. The owners clearly work hard to make the campsite work for their guests - regularly cleaned toilets (hand soap, air freshner and cleaner available for proactive campers) and showers (lots of hooks!), great kitchen area making up for no electric hook up with loads of fridge and freezer space. The kettle and toaster were very welcome. Lots of space on the camping fields. Then there is the lovely gardens! Fun for the kids to explore, lie in the hammock and play hide and seek. The effort and hard work of the owners makes this site a great find and one we will return to.

Beautiful & peaceful spot with great facilities

We had a lovely few days here. The gardens are gorgeous and the facilities brilliant. It's a short drive to the beach and a perfect place to escape for a few days.

Response from Secret Spot Camping

Glad you enjoyed your stay with us and we do really appreciate your review! Thanks Steve & Jo.

Quiet site - pretty much perfect :-)

Stayed here for two nights with my twin boys and can't fault the place. A friendly chat with Steve on arrival was completely consistent with the thought that's been put into making this a really good family site. Plenty of space to pitch, charming gardens to relax in and clean facilities also including fridge, freezer toaster and - if want it - electric kettle! If you want a quiet, low key relaxing spot that's good for families this place will do you well! Thanks - we'll be back:-)

Quiet, safe for children, great facilities.

We stayed here over a weekend in June, with our two young girls (5 and 8). We found the campsite to be perfect for our children (they loved the hammock and looking into the shallow pond in the garden), and there was lots of safe space for them to run around in. The weather wasn't perfect (chilly nights, and raining when we packed up), so the communal kitchen/room with the kettle, fridge, toaster etc, added a welcome bit of convenience when needed. It's a peaceful spot, with really nice birdsong at dusk, and the occasional small bat flying around - which is great to see and hear. I managed to leave my coat at the campsite, and a quick phone call to Steve (the owner), led to it being swiftly posted back to my house - Thanks Steve! We would thoroughly recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a peaceful site that is a stones throw away from the beautiful (but often manic) beaches in the area.

Not as good as we expected

Firstly, I am a keen camper. I spent 35 nights camping last year, and will probably beat that this year. I have stayed in some fantastic campsites. I look for friendliness, ease and their ability to facilitate that relaxed camping feeling. On this occasion, myself and 6 other campers in our 30s (3 tents, 1 van) were ending a week tour along the south coast. Secret spot isn't a terrible campsite, however when I booked it, I did so on the excellent reviews and description. However, I feel my experience did not live up to the expectation, so I am writing this to help others. Firstly, the campsite is effectively 2 fields (where you camp) and a lower area which has a nice garden and the facilities. On arrival there appeared to be some confusion with our booking, the owners seemed to think we'd cancelled one of our party (which we hadn't). As a group of 7, the first of our party were told we'd have a field to ourselves, however when the rest of us arrived we were told we'd be sharing the field with a family with 3 young children. We don't mind camping near children. We are quiet and respectful (we like campfire crafting and star gazing), however got the vibe we were being told to be quiet before we'd even set up. We got shown round, with a lot of emphasis placed on the campsites no fire rule. The 2 fields are just plain fields, like any budget farm campsite. Our pitch has some roped off dirt along oneside. The small gardens near the facilities are very pretty, but we didn't spend much time here. There is a small fire area. When we passed it, some people had already began using it. In my opinion more fire areas are needed, as it is unfeasible to offer one small fire area for a whole campsite. Also, it was a fair way from where we where camping, so having to lug wood would have been a hassle (one which we wouldn't have minded, but other people may see this as an issue). We love having a campfire at night. We have a raised firepit/bbq we usually use, leaving no trace. I have no idea why using these for bbqs is allowed, but fires is not. Offering designated fire areas is a great idea, but they need to cater for the amount of people who wish to use them. The showers and toilets were okay. There 'grass' outside this area is fake, which was odd! There is an emphasis on recycling, which we liked. We didn't use the kitchen area, but poked our head in, and it looked okay. Location was okay, a short walk to local pubs and surf shops. A slightly longer walk to a (busy surf) beach. Overall, it seemed overpriced for us...

Response from Secret Spot Camping

Thank-you for your lengthy review which I find ill-informed and inaccurate in many areas! A lot of your points seem to revolve around our Fire/BBQ policy which is clearly stated on the website you booked on. It is also repeated on the booking confirmations, two of which are sent prior to arrival - along with explicit directions to find us - plus of course we are on Google Maps. We are only just 500 yds off the main road after all. We have no signs up it’s true, which is why we send you the email(s) with directions. This is our private home and we don’t want the world and his dog knocking on our door every 5 minutes..Your description of our fields being ‘budget farm campsite’ is completely erroneous as the many pictures on this website and our Facebook Page will testify. The ‘roped off area of dirt’ you mention is in fact some boundary work in the top corner where a new bank/fence/windbreak has been erected partially due to a free grant of 345 trees/saplings/hedging plants from The Woodland Trust. (This is completed, just waiting for the grass to grow back). In effect then you had the top field to yourself (and one other family) and so there was plenty of room without going anywhere near that area. I spoke to the only other family in that field on Sunday morning and asked where you were. They said that when they explained they had an 8 month old baby you were very nice and had promised to be quiet.. and you were. They said you had left early Saturday morning. Since you only arrived Friday evening you were onsite for barely more than 12 hours. It seems that from your comments you never actually used any of the facilities just ‘poked our heads in’. As for value.. Everything on site is free, there is no timer on any of the hot showers etc. and how many sites provide a Campers Kitchen/Fridges/Microwave/Free Wi-Fi etc? The gardens are not just ‘pretty’ they are beautiful and require a lot of hard work. Hands up, there was some confusion when you arrived as several bookings all arrived at once. I am sorry you do not seemed to have enjoyed your stay here but I feel that this is down to incompatibility rather than anything else. What you wanted and what we offer are two different things.. We are generally friendly and helpful (see other reviews) however hugging people when they leave isn’t really our style. I urge you in future to read the campsites details more carefully before you book!  You still gave us 3 out of 5 Stars so I will allow myself a small ‘Yay!’   Regards Steve.

Sshhh lets keep it secret

We loved this campsite. Great welcome and immaculately kept, felt very safe for children. We will definitely be returning 😀🏄‍♂️

Thank-you for your 5 Star Review!

Hidden gem of a hideaway campsite.

Very friendly and helpful hosts, who did a great job at keeping on top of cleanliness and making sure facilities were up to scratch. Really handy having fridges and simple pleasures like a toaster, kettle and microwave. Great location, just tucked away enough, but convenient for local beach and shops etc. We definitely would like to return. I would go 5*, but always worth having something to aim for! Thanks again for a great break Secret Spot (Steve and Jo)

Lovley and peaceful

Myself and my two teenagers have just spent little over a week at Secret Spot. It’s was the perfect campsite for us and we enjoyed it very much. Loved the location so close to the Burrows and Saunton Beach. Will definitely be back. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Nice campground in very good location

Friendly owner who keeps the facilities clean enough. The fridge needs a good cleanup. There are a two (!) electricity points in the kitchen and some old sofa’s to chill on. Good wifi. Nice beaches down the road (you need a car) and good restaurants in Braunton. From the campside you can hike to the dunes.
Aug 11, 2018 by Barbara

Response from Secret Spot Camping

Thanks for your review. The fridge is checked and cleaned regularly however this did become difficult during the recent heatwave (2018) with the sudden influx of extra campers, especially given the amount of food left behind. We are considering adding a 3rd fridge for next summer.  Not many campsites offer this facility at all. Secure device charging is available in reception area had asked!  Saunton Beach access is 1.7 miles (6 mins by car or 33 mins on foot) according to Google Maps. Thx.

Sweet relaxing

This is a great campsite, on the day we arrived the owner said it was his busiest weekend, but it was still a fully relaxed experience. Showers were excellent after a day on the beach, the campers shed was bliss and everyone was chilled.

Nice campsite , beautiful setting and gardens to walk thru, clean showers but toilets could be better. Owner very friendly and gave a lot of info. On this website is tagged as " short walk to the beach" , but bear in mind that short walk is about 2.5 miles.

Thanks for you review. We are always totally transparent about the distance to the beach..  To be clear.. according to Google Maps- Saunton Beach is 1.8 miles, 6 mins drive or 33 mins walk. We do advise people that they are better off driving and saving their energy for the beach itself. As this is our own home we live on site so the toilets/showers are cleaned multiple times a day. We are generally on hand to rectify any issue once we are made aware of it! Regards Steve

Beautiful setting

Lovely little campsite , kids loved it , there's a little pond, a hammock, nice gardens to walk thru . Clean showers, toilets clean enough even tho could be better . Very friendly owner gave lots of info. On website this campsite is listed as " short walk to the beach", well that was a 2.5 miles walk lol, so not too short. Short drive to croyde bay and saunton beach.
