Coombe View Farm

Devon Ex12 3 Bt, Devon, England
1 acre hosted by Coombe V.
Stunning rural, campfire-permitting location, with a beach within easy reach

With walks aplenty, overlooking a pebbled shore, this is the kind of place where Julian, Anne, Dick, George and Timmy could get seriously stuck into some mischievous adventures. Shaped like an upright horseshoe, with the beach at the very bottom, Branscombe village has two ends and at one of them you’ll find Coombe View Farm Caravan and Camping Site.

This relaxed site has lovely views over the fields – to your left you can see the sea. The main field is a sloped green expanse, with a few static and touring caravans around the edges and a couple of picnic tables dotted about. It’s an understated, quiet place that emanates a rural vibe, with inquisitive ponies stretching long necks over the fence to have a nose at their neighbours.

Campers are more than welcome to explore the surrounding land when they are not on the beach. Kids can play games, create Enid Blytonstyle escapades and collect wood for campfires in the fields that aren’t occupied by animals. And when the sun goes down, the village’s Mason’s Arms pub is just the spot for a fizzy ginger beer beside the roaring log fire.

Beach time! Long, pebbly and part of the acclaimed Jurassic Coast, Branscombe beach is perfect for stone-skimming, splashing around and swimming in its clean waters. The Sea Shanty Shop and Restaurant (01297 680577) backs onto the beach, providing tasty snacks, ice creams and beachy paraphernalia. The Donkey Sanctuary (Slade House Farm, Sidmouth; 01395 578222) is only a couple of miles away, where visitors are encouraged to wander around the fields making a fuss of the donkeys and enjoying the picturesque countryside around the centre.

Food and drink
If you’re still hungry after the cream tea head for the Mason’s Arms (01297 680300) in the village. It has a cosy, log-fire atmosphere, with elderly locals playing dominoes, dogs stretching out under tables and a good selection of tasty pub grub to choose from.
