A verdant, inland Devon retreat that's equidistant from Dartmoor National Park and the beaches of the north coast

You don’t need to be Van Gogh to see the picture-worthy beauty of the place. A cute wooden bridges stretches across to a shaggy, shrub-covered island in the pond, bluebells brighten the woodland floor and tent pitches are mown into the long campsite grass, stitched together by trimmed pathways. You’ll feel thoroughly at ease in this arboreal bolthole.

The textured 20-acres, complete with a wonderful renaissance courtyard and medieval clubhouse that they call 'The Reforge Inn', are all spread around a farm that is in the Domesday book that the family call home and have been running as a successful holiday business for years. It’s only recently that they’ve decided to extend their offering into the great outdoors, with furnished bell tents and timber clad cabins.

Groups, in particular, have come to love the place. A cluster of six bell tents can be rented together and you can hire the whole sites for events, weddings and the like. They even have the odd games nights to please the geeks, Shakespeare plays to please the theatre lovers and occasional acoustic nights in their courtyard! Couples and families are in their element too – a private, lake-side bell tent, for example, has it’s own unique location, while a second bell tent, pitched amid an orchard, feels charmingly hidden away.

If you’ve got nippers to entertain the semi-wilderness of the campsite grounds offer hours of intrigue and adventure. Visit the film location that was recently used in their woods where a hidden away hut still remains! Or throw in the flip-flops, buckets and spades and take off on day-trips to the beach. It’s around half an hour to Devon’s popular north coast, where the beaches of Westward Ho! and Bude await. A cyclepath just half a mile away affords you hours of cycling fun! You’ll be glad, when you see the jam-packed campsites of the coastline, that you choose this inland retreat – a genuine ‘refuge’ from the crowds.

From the host
Reforge was set up as an idyllic 20 acre retreat in rural North Devon in order to preserve and share this beautiful location with others. We are passionate about conservation and wildlife and that can be reflected in the way we manage the 20 acre site of woodland, lakes and picturesque meadows and gardens. We are an exclusive glampsite with belltents, cabins and camping. We also have a off grid cabin by a stream, a luxury cabin on the lake and a log cabin in a meadow. We are a very rural isolated site with 20 acres to explore. so there is no worry about social distancing or hygiene as we are following guidelines religiously. We have an onsite bar – Reforge Inn – with a renaissance courtyard which is open in line with government guidelines. Reforge Inn is in fact a fully licensed bar which is a time capsule - since it is full of family antiquities! Campfires are allowed in our firepits. Each belltent has its own picnic table and battery to charge phones and a lamp. We provide solar torches for you. If you are coming with more than 2 people we will provide you with extra beds but you must bring extra bedding. We don't allow dogs because of the wildlife here, and our resident cats. If you want a place that is different, relaxing, magical and quirky - this is for you! We have little hideaway areas with firepits, hammocks and twinkly lights to enjoy come sunlight or moonlight! We also have camping pitches in the Overlook meadow.
Nearby attractions
For something different, there is a local archery centre two miles away – Arms of Old (01409 231171) – but most folks are here for the good walking and day-trips to the beach. It takes less than 20 minutes to drive to Dartmoor National Park and only a little longer to reach the north coast, with the likes of Bude, Bideford, Clovelly and Westward Ho! around half an hour by car. There's also a local cycling route ½mile from the site.
Food and drink
There is a bar open on certain days please check for opening days/times. It's a two minute drive to the local shop in Highampton or continue on to Hatherleigh (five miles away) where there is a supermarket. For pubs, try the excellent Black River Inn (01409 231243), a 10-minute walk away in Black Torrington, or head a half hour further to the Half Moon(01409 231888) in Sheepwash. By car, the George(01837 811755) and The Tally Ho! (01837 810306) in Hatherleigh are both great choices and allow for a worthy pit stop in what is a very pretty little market town.
