Hook Farm Camping and Caravanning Site

UK England South West England Devon

Gore Lane, Uplyme, Lyme Regis, Dorset DT7 3UU
Attractive terraced site in a prime location for fossil-hunting.

Island hopping dinosaurs were part of the scenery in these parts some 190 million years ago. Many lost their footing and fell into the sea, leaving their mark on what became known as the Jurassic Coast. Hunting down their fossils is a popular sport in the quaint harbour resort of Lyme Regis.

Picturesque and peaceful, but within a stone’s throw of the lively harbour town, Hook Farm offers the best of both rural and urban worlds. Tucked away in the small village of Uplyme, with views up the pretty Lym Valley, it’s a lovely, leafy site that feels quite remote: being in a designated Dark Valley there’s no light pollution at night – just lie back and watch the stars emerge on a clear evening.

A few steps is all it takes to be warmly welcomed at reception, whisked past a section for caravans, and ushered into a beautiful terraced garden valley, where campers look like they’re proudly privy to one of the best-kept camping secrets on the south coast.

The site itself is well-kept and welcoming, with pitches on several different levels, some spacious and open, others secluded and sheltered behind trees and bushes. Generous pitches allow space to spread out with gazebos and blankets. A dozen are tucked beside various bushy nooks and crannies, offering a little more privacy. You could select your patch according to your sleeping habits. Early risers should head west to enjoy the morning sun, and night owls looking for a lie in can camp east, where the last rays of the day fall. Sunsets look best from the top of the hill, and the lower area is better shielded from the elements.

Friendly, quiet and gently undulating, it’s a perfect spot for families: children will enjoy the playground, complete with an old boat to clamber around, while their parents will appreciate the well-stocked shop selling fresh bread and croissants in the mornings and a village pub within easy strolling distance that serves local real ales and wholesome pub grub.

And if the peace and quiet of the countryside isn’t enough, there’s a great 45-minute walk down the valley which runs alongside the River Lym and into the cobbled backstreets and alleyways of Lyme Regis, with its bustling harbour, arty gift shops, sandy beach and array of restaurants and cafés.You can either make it a round walk and return via the coastal path and the cliff-top (the camp shop can provide details of the walking route and maps) or, if you can’t face the steep walk back uphill, call the resident local taxi, which will come and pick you up and take you back to the campsite for about a fiver.

Fortunately for any young, eager fossil-hunters returning empty-handed from a day’s beachcombing, plastic dinosaur eggs are sold in the campsite shop, which ought to lift spirits before the next outing.

Quiet, family site based on the Jurassic coast

Good Facilities and Location

Sep 29, 2015 by bongonaught

We visited this site on our first outing in the campervan this weekend.  It was well set-up for vans as each pitch is on a separate terrace with a level gravel area to park and a grass area for awnings.  Electric hook-up, showers, toilets and wash-up area made the trip really comfortable.

Lyme Regis is a lovely town and the walk following the river from Uplyme through the woodland to Lyme Mill is recommended.  A few steps and a bit rooty but still no problem with a toddler in a mountain buggy.

Great site, great location, great staff

May 29, 2015 by andy.gascoigne

My wife, our 3 year old son and I love this place. It's close enough to Lyme Regis to walk down by the riverside (about 40 minutes and we managed it with a buggy the first time we visited), but far enough away to withdraw from the crowds when it's busy. The staff have always been superb and we're about to make our 3rd consecutive annual visit here since we discovered it. Terracing makes for a great feeling with plenty of space and privacy. Plus a nice pub in the village. Lovely.

Lovely Time

Aug 16, 2014 by Belchery11

We Stayed mid July 2014 just after the schools broke up with three kids (5 and under).  Having a very large tent we phoned up to check that they would accept us no problem and that we wanted electric hook up.  All provided on arrival with nice level pitch.  We hit probabably the hotest ten days of the summer, so spent most of our time on Charmouth Beach.

The toilet blocks were clean most of the time but could have done with more facilties (the site was full) as there were regular queues for everything especially in the ladies.  All dogs were kept on lead and owners said the dog walking field was good. Noise wasn't too bad.

Great Family Site

Jul 11, 2014 by jenilyb

This is a great family site with spacious pitches.  The site is well managed with all the wardens being super friendly and helpful.  We even witnessed one warden, help a man whose wife had clearly not enjoying the camping experience, pack up his very big tent and equipment!  The facilities were fantastic and very clean.  Our 4 children loved the playground.  We will return.

so pleased with this campsite ,  Adrian the owner was so helpful as we had to book at the last minute to find accomadation for my son who was doing a jurrasic project for his university studies for paleantology .and he reserved the last caravan for me so i was so pleased with the service from him and his staff .   we found all the local beaches in charmouth and lyme regis a wealth of information for my son  and the museums too .  we had a tremendous time and the caravan we stayed in on site was like home from home , we could not have asked for better it was great . we had a toaster , microwave , gas cooker , all your cooking utensils and pots and pans and cutlery you needed , everything to hand really ,  such a lovely site and so peaceful i have never slept so well in a long time and felt totally revived . the walk along the river which takes 45 minutes to lyme regis is a beautiful walk in the sunshine and we throughly enjoyed the area and the people were so friendly . the staff on site were lovely and helpful pointing us in the right direction for hot spots and the farm shop was handy for basic essentials .  the shower was lovely and hot each time and just a wonderful relaxing time for us after a busy day mapping cliffs and doing fossil hunting and clambering over rocks to get to pin hay bay but it was all worth it just to see the ammonite pavement it was lovely and we had great weather too.  we would definately go back again .

Great Campsite

Jun 29, 2014 by Alexandra Hollingworth

Lovely campsite with beautiful views over the valley. Really friendly helpful staff (especially Nikki and Jeff), immaculate toilet block, useful freezers for icepacks. The four minute solar shower is warm and plenty of time; didn't queue once in the week we were there.

Our pitch was sheltered and within the sun for the majority of the day. You will need strong tent pegs but mainly because the ground was extremely dry when we arrived. It was quiet at night. You will need a torch after dark. Camp shop was useful for bread, milk and bacon. Nice farm shop on A35 near Axminister.

The walk into Lyme is lovely and all downhill. We recommend the fossilwalking from the museum (need to book in advance).

We would give it 10/10

great site

visited hook farm on the may bank holiday.greeted by friendly adrian and co.a thorough run through of site rules and facilities.shown to our pitch by a friendly chatty chris.the pitch was at the top of the site and level.great view across the the valley and hills.the shower and toilet block are spotless cleaned 3 times a day.the hot water is solar heated an is hot.showers are 20 pence for an ample 4 mins.our pitch was a bit stoney so decent pegs would be sensible.even though the site is large because of the layout you get a small site feel.the shop on site sells supplies of plenty.there is a pub in the villiage which does a nice pint and nice meals.

i would definatley recommend the old town mill bakery in lyme as its a delightful experience.basically its a bakery where you see them making bread and the like.you can get as much toast homemade jam and butter for a set price.lots of different breads to choose from.

we will be back asap.

Perfect!

Apr 26, 2014 by tennyson

We camped at Hook Farm during the Easter holidays this year (April 2014) and absolutely loved it.  The campsite is peaceful and well looked after.  The pitches are more spacious than most, and because of the terraced layout it felt private and far away from the other campers.  The little playground was a meeting point for the children who frequently got together for badminton or football, and the campsite owner thoughtfully left a space clear for them to do this, much to the joy of my nine year old son!  The toilet block was fantastic, the best I have seen.  There are freezers for your ice blocks and washing machines available too.  Shower was perfect - 20p for nearly 5 minutes was more than enough.  While we were there the lower block was closed for refurbishment, which I am sure will be fantastic - it seems they respond well to what campers want.  The lawns are well cared for and the little hedges, trees and wooden picket fences create cosy areas to sit and relax in, and it was quiet. Most of the other campers were families too (it was during school holidays).  The staff at Hook Farm seem to really care about how they can help, and they were always available to give advice on where to go or what to do.  I cannot praise this camp site enough, and would rate it as one of the best - and that's high praise as we have been camping for 15 years!  Thank you for a wonderful break, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to others, and indeed, come back again ourselves!

Loving Hook Farm...

Apr 22, 2014 by kradford

Just returned from nearly two weeks over Easter at Hook Farm in Uplyme. A FANTASTIC holiday, bathed in sunshine, and made by the beautiful campsite in a great location. Really friendly people, peaceful, quiet and safe for children to explore and make friends. Our boys loved it. The walk into Lyme to the coast is lovely, carpeted with blue bells. Whole site immaculate, including shower blocks. We've found a new favourite place!

Beware !

Oct 7, 2013 by Duncan

We booked a few days in the summer holiday, this looks like a nice place, it was less thatn 2 weeks notice.  We paid nice and promptly about £80, within 3 days but unfortunately had serious life/death illness in our extended family which meant that we had to cancel.  We called and informed them but they said they would not give us money back unless the pitch was rented again.  The manager was stubborn, and though polite, he was uncooperative. How would we know if it had been rented again?   He said that we'd have to trust him. We had no choice but to trust him to be reasonable and what do you know(?), he only gave us one night refund out of three nights booked. Had we not have been such prompt payers he would never have been able to take our money.  A month or so later we had the opportunity to go again, so I called the guy and asked if, given the situation and that we had previously paid and received NOTHING if he would be reasonable and meet us half way. He refused, point blank,  "No, I'm not going to do that" - nice!  The feeling we are left with is that the proprietor is not interested in his guests, he is only interested in making money, we actually feel conned, though be it a relatively small amount of money.  I'm not going to go crazy over £50 - £60 and I think he knows that but he was happy to take our money and give NOTHING in return. Not a nice site to deal with or person to deal with in my experience.

Response from campsite owner:

Hello Duncan,

I am sorry that you feel aggrieved. When we spoke about this on the phone I explained our refund policy (which is detailed on our website). If  it had been outside the High Season I would have given you a full refund (as I have done for many people) but, at that time, we were fully booked and  in honouring your booking we had been turning other families away. You then cancelled with 7 days to go which left me with little time to re-let your pitch. Unfortunately the second time you wanted to make a booking was also in the High Season and I was unable to do anything for you then. We feel that we are as fair as we can be especially as we refund any monies that we can to you from re-letting your pitch. You may find that other sites wouldn’t give a refund at all (at any time) but at least we did. We are finding that more and more campers are taking out holiday insurance to cover such circumstances now.

Heavenly Family Camping

Sep 6, 2013 by Matt

A great campsite enjoyed by very nice people.  Just returned from a 4-night break, having stayed for a weekend a couple of years ago. We have young children (3yrs and 1yr) - they had a ball! From the moment you arrive the staff are friendly and very helpful, giving you lots of helpful information and showing you to your pitch - you may have read negative comments about the staff being over-zealous with bureaucratic rules being read out on arrival.  I certainly didn't find that to be the case.  The rules in place help to make Hook Farm a friendly, safe and well-run campsite.  If you don't want rules try the Shell Island campsite in North Wales and see how you get on!  The pitch was spacious with a fantastic view of the countryside. The shower-block was spotless.  The shop saved our bacon (literally - if you can excuse the pun!) a few times and is well stocked with standard food provisions (Bread, milk, locally sourced sausages and bacon)  - although it's not licensed to sell alcohol so make sure you stock up in advance if you fancy a few beers under the stars (stunning night sky!). The kids play area is small but cute with the sunken boat an inspired communal attraction.  The tiered-landscape of the campsite gives the area a really interesting look and feel. Everyone obeyed the noise curfew at 11pm (in fact the site was very quiet from 9.30pm onwards) and the behaviour of all the campers was impeccable.  The eye-catching walk from the campsite into Lyme along the riverside is well worth a go and it's a short 5-10 minutes journey by car to the main car park by Langmoor Gardens (not far from the beach).  Hope to re-visit, time and time again!

Fantastic Stay and friendly staff

My partner and I recently stayed at Hook Farm and had a lovely stay there. We forgot to pack the tent poles and pegs and luckily Chris found us a spare tent to use and even helped put it up!! Everyone on site was so helpful and friendly, the facilities were clean and our dogs loved the orchard to run around in. We would recommend this to our friends and will be coming back again.

We stayed here for 3 nights in may half term and all of us had a great time. The showers and toilets were always clean, and I liked the fact the wardens were always about monitoring noise etc. Will definitely be back. We have 3 young children who loved it too,  including the walk to the beach.  X

lovely, friendly campsite

We booked Hook Farm on impulse for a 2 night stay with our dog and 2 kids (6 & 9yrs). On arrival our first impression was how friendly the staff were. We were quickly shown to our pitch which we were very pleased with.  The toilets and showers were immaculately clean as was the whole campsite. There was a large orchard were we could exercise our dog off-lead.  On the Saturday a Sri Lanken restauranter set up a takeaway onsite and we had a lovely takeaway from them. The campsite has stunning views from the higher pitches and is just a short drive from Lyme Regis where my girls collected fossils on Monmouth beach. We had a lovely time at this campsite, we are not seasoned campers, we borrowed our tent. After this experience we definitly would camp again and we recommend this lovely campsite.

A friendly site with good facilities, short walk to local pub & very pleasant riverside walk down to the town and sea front. We had very relaxed last minuet weekend, most enjoyable. This was our first experience of camper-vanning so I can't make a comparison but will give 4 stars!

Great stay for our family of four plus dog. Hook farm was easy to book via email and accommodated our large tent without any issues. Nice spot where you can look onto the hillside and watch the cows head off for milking in the distance. The site was full during our stay and didnt feel too hemmed in. Dog walking area was great and shop was very handy. We were on the lower field and only used the older block which were told was less modern than the other. That said it was absolutely fine and was well positioned on the site. Staff were all very friendly and helpfull. Mostly families on the site but then it was half term. Fab walk just under 2 miles mostly pedestrian and child friendly into Lyme Regis itself. Can't find anything Negative to say about it and plan to return again.

Just returned from our 5th great stay at Hook Farm. Despite changeable weather we had a great time. The site is friendly, spacious and well kept. Good facilities especially the on-site shop, clean showers, kid’s playground and friendly staff. Hook Farm has a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. In fact the only thing that could be improved would be decent hand dryers!

Hook Farm Caravan and Camping Park

So Disappointing. My husband and I had visited this site about 15 years ago and loved it, which is why we decided to go back there on our way back from a long weekend camping in Cornwall. Im afraid Hook Farm has become a victim of its own success. Granted it was half term but the site was packed, we felt like we were in the middle of a ’where’s wally’ picture! This site has gone from a quaint farm to a commercial site where you are even told exactly where to park. I enjoy the freedom of camping so was disappointed when the lady at reception read out the camp rules to me and then handed them to me in writing. They also tried to charge me £24 for a small tent which I questioned (we only paid £17 a night in Cornwall for a top notch site complete with kids swimming pool) so they dropped it to £19. Toilets are clean but full of cobwebs which isn’t great if you are scared of spiders! There is a nice playground but its right next to main drive into the site, which could be a little dangerous. The location is still wonderful and the Talbot Arms pub (within walking distance) serves good pub grub at reasonable prices.

We hadnt been camping for many years, staff were very friendly and even helped us pitch our tent as it started to get dark!

Great walk to Lyme Regis, campsite well designed so it doesnt feel too busy, even though it was full.

There is even a dog walking area.

Very nice stay, and will be camping again soon!

A really great site with friendly staff (both owners and wardens) good facilities (even a freezer to refreeze your ice packs!) wonderfully terraced pitches divided by trees and shrubbery so pretty much everyone gets a flat pitch and a view. Tents are not just the poor relation here, all have equal weight in the pitch allocation and the term ’happy campers’ really does apply. There is a wonderful woodland walk down into Lyme and a bus back up the steep hill (!) which stops at the bottom of Gore Lane. Enjoy. Jane Russ
