Hole Station Adults Only Campsite
Hole Station, Highampton, Beaworthy, Devon EX21 5JH
Situated on the land of a former railway station in a sparsely populated part of Devon, this adult-only hideaway is a truly special place. We first heard about it in 2009, and it quickly became a favourite among Cool Camping readers, and we’re pleased to say that it has retained all its rustic charm – along with its secluded woodland pitches, campfires and natural beauty.
Whether you bring your own tent or opt for a pre-erected Rent-A-Tent here, you’re going to love your pitch. There are just 19 of them, spread about the place in woodland clearings. Each pitch bears its own number and offers privacy within a magical tree-filled setting. Each has a tarp strung up to one side, allowing some added all-weather protection and creating the perfect space to set up your own bush-craft kitchen.
The owners Greg and Liz eventually bought Hole Station after keeping their eyes on the property for years. They live in what was the old ticket office while their kids are residents of a renovated old railway carriage next door (think Annie and Clarabel-style from Thomas The Tank Engine) next door. Together they are slowly bringing the wood back to its former forest glory by coppicing and pollarding, which they do in winter, after the last of the season’s campers has packed up and gone home.
The cut-down wood is used to create wildlife habitats and fuel for campfires. So feel a little smug, as you sit mesmerised by the licking flames of your fire at night, that you’re forming a symbiotic relationship with the trees all around you. In fact, the clearing you’re pitched in is helping to shed more life-giving light on the young oaks nearby, enabling them to have a kick-start at growing into huge, majestic trees likely to outlive us for centuries to come.
It’s not just the campfire culture, perfect pitches and woodland restoration that Liz, Greg and family have got right at Hole Station, though. The loos are of the compost variety and all rubbish (including food waste) is recycled or turned into compost wherever possible in order to give something back to this lovely corner of England.
Finally their resident pony Sanne is on hand to provide horse-and-trap rides and there are three goats – the preposterously named Dominar Rigel 16th, Kha’Dargo and Grace. Greg and Liz plan to relaunch their meadow as a centre for ‘low-tech living’ courses. Plus there’s a signed Woodland Walk on which you half expect to encounter a fairy or two before reaching (handily labelled) The End – a top spot for watching the sunset. Evenings are peaceful wherever you are, with quiet time after 10pm.
So there you have it: Hole Station is as peaceful and bucolic as it gets, and about as refreshing and romantic a country getaway as you will find.
The Owner SaysPeaceful, rural woodland camping with campfires allowed in beautiful West Devon. You can choose BYO camping (you bring all your own kit, pitches are self selection) or Rent-A-Tent camping where you just bring bedding, wash kit, torches and matches - everything else is supplied including a fully equipped cooking/dining safari shelter for your own private use. There are electric showers (free), a washing up area with hot water, wash basins and eco loos.
Tranquil woodland stay
We have just arrived home from spending a wonderful five nights at this tranquil campsite. This was our second visit & we were looking forward to going again.
We opted for a ready erected tent as we are getting lazy! The tent was roomy & a safari type kitchen, table & chairs under a tarpaulin was included in the price. The cooking area is well kitted out with everything you could want (just take matches), even the water was already filled up. The pitches are well spaced out in wonderful deciduous woodland, you could not see your neighbours. There is the option to take your own tent, a tarpaulin cover & food storage cupboard (pesky varmint squirrels!!) are included on the pitch. Every pitch has its own fire bowl; logs are bought from reception at only £6 a sack. A cooking tripod can be hire as well. A fire helps keep the midges at bay & is a perfect way to spend an evening with a beer or two.
The whole site is very eco-friendly. Compost toilets are clean & a recycling area for everything. The showers are free & hot. There is space to wash up & freeze ice packs.
A Diner is available morning for breakfasts & evenings for dinners (closed Mondays I think). The food is delicious & a good breakfast sets you up for a days exploring.
We had daytime excursions to Lydford Gorge, Meeth Quarry, Meldon Reservoir & Viaduct & Bude. I must say that it was fantastic to return to the tranquillity of the woods after the hustle & bustle of Bude.
We also went on the three pub walk. This uses quiet lanes & has beautiful country side views. We did miss out the Golden Inn as opening times are limited, but stopped at the Half Moon Inn at Sheepwash (great cider!) & The Torridge at Black Torrington, a traditional country pub with great food, even had fish finger sandwiches much to the delight of my husband!
The owners, Greg & Liz are friendly & welcoming & are full of local knowledge. They are both passionate about the environment. They kindly let us put our moth trap out in the woods & we had some amazing moths in the mornings.
This is the campsite to visit if you want to escape modern life for a while, enjoy nature & chill out.
We look forward to visiting again.
Hole Station Adult only Campsite
Just returned from this amazing site and i can honestly say it does exactly as it says on the tin ...it really is a lovely place and you can see and appreciate the hard work and dedication to the maintenance of this beautiful area that the owners have achieved.
We stayed in the rent a tent option as only going for a few days and newbies to camping, its a great choice for convenience as you literally only need bedding,Beverages meaning Beer of course! food, matches, wash stuff and clothing.
The rent a tent option has airbeds already pumped up,a fully equipped sheltered kitchen area with gas hob stove, kettle, water in a holder with tap, washing up bowl, cool box, plates, cups etc, fire pit with tripod grill, a wooden table and seating under covered area ... i mean seriously how cool is that they have everything ready to roll ???
The pictures don't do it justice really it needs to be seen ...the Pitches are all slightly different and all have there own benefits but are all nicely spaced out so you have privacy which is a rarity on most sites and something we really wanted ( we aren't anti people just wanted peace and quiet and to feel like we had the woods to ourselves which is totally how it feels )
The site also consists of a very well kept eco toilet system, i had no idea what that meant before we left but on trying it out think its a great idea...basically number ones in one toilet and number two's in the dry toilet right next to it....very well kept ,hygienic and environmentally friendly plus enjoyed reading the information poster all about the history/benefits of this toilet system well using it : )
There is also a hole station diner that serves food and drinks mornings and evenings every day except Mondays as i recall with a nice covered seating area (I.can't remember the serving times so ask the owner) but thought this was a brilliant idea and you can take the food back to your camp area if you bring your plates with you as well.
There is a well kept rubbish recycling area, electric showers, communal washing up station,Wood packs to buy for the fire pits, Freezer in the communal washing up area for ice packs etc and they also fill it with water bottles for you, electric charging point, water refill point, information point with Map and areas of interest but Greg the Owner is great at telling you where to Visit, local shop opening times etc and is very helpful.
There is also the many lovely Animals to appreciate...Dogs,cat ( the beast of hole station) Goats,Horses and Chickens...all adding to the brilliant experience that is Hole Station Campsite !!! Loved It ...Thank you for a peaceful, relaxing few days in a well kept beautiful woodland campsite.
We have just got home from Hole Station. What an amazing place, fantastic pitches set right in the woods. It really has what you need to get away and relax. Greg who runs it, I cannot thank him enough I had to change my dates due to work and he was very accommodating. Great holiday, cannot wait to go back.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights. There aren't many words to describe this place. All I can say is that we both felt it was a really magical place. Greg & Liz were really helpful and friendly. On the first night of our stay, we experienced a lot of rain and although we did not even think of changing our pitch, Greg very kindly offered us a drier pitch the next day and he was really nice about it. They have a few goats, horses, chickens and of course a very cute cat called Mini. She loves sitting on peoples cars and we found her adorable. This place is a must see and I think everyone who enjoys a relaxing camping experience, should visit the Hole Station.
Shhh Don't tell everyone!
Loved it! What more do you need to say!
Stayed for a week in July, 3 of us in rent a tents. Travelling by motorcycle, made so much easier with everything you need provided, even down to candles (but watch out for the Ninja Squirrels, they have a liking for them!).
We've stayed at plenty of sites that promise peace and tranquillity with the back to nature touch, but few seem to manage it, Hole Station definitely does. Maybe it's the lack of kids, the attitude of other guests, the surroundings or Greg and Liz's way of life, but it definitely works!
Made friends with the goats, chickens (who seem to like a bike as a perch, adds a new meaning to "biker chick "), dogs and the cat. Plenty of wildlife around too. Pubs within walking distance, and plenty to see and do in the area, all help to make it an ideal place.
The facilities may not be to everyone's taste, but are right for the site, and actually very good. Don't knock a compost loo till you try one, pretty much odour free and spotless, as for the electric showers, better than many, many sites we've stayed on.
Will definitely be returning.
Proper camping experience
Just came back from a three day stay at Hole Station campsite.I have stayed at a lot of campsites over the years but nothing compares to this site.If you're after a proper camping experience then please give this place a go!!!! Beautiful surrounding and great people.Certainly a little gem!!! It was that great I have booked up to go again in three weeks time to try out the Blair Witch plot.If you're into sitting around a warm campfire and taking in Devons natural beauty then this is the place to come.Amazing time had by us all :)
Peace & relaxation
Spent a couple of nights at Hole Station and the end of June (2014). Greeted on arrival by Liz who invited us to walk the site and select our pitch. All the pitches are well spaced and offer a degree of privacy not normally available on a camp site. Our pitch (no 8) was roomy enough for two moderately large tents and equipped with a tarp dining shelter, fire pit and a bench. As soon as we arrived everything seemed to slow down and we were soon seduced by the seclusion and quiet, save for the bird song and breeze passing through the trees, into a state of relaxation. If you are looking for somewhere to wind down and enjoy the company of friends this is the site for you.
We spent a couple of nights here in spring (2013). We showed up very late but one of the owners appeared and gave us the tour, which we really appreciated. Very friendly and accommodating owners throughout our stay. The camp site wasn't particularly quiet, but it didnt feel too loud either, just some sounds of life and other campers.
Really nice woodland experience and run by some very friendly and helpful owners. We would definitely stay again and recommend to our friends!
Oh Sweet Solitude
I spent a glorious 3 nights here in September 2013. I stayed on pitch 18 - also known as 'the loner's pitch'. I love everything about this campsite. The good sized pitches, the bench and campfire and the very welcome shelter. We didn't have much rain, but it protected me from falling acorns. I would definitely recommend this camp site if you really want to get away from it all and connect with nature. The woodland really comes alive at night and the sounds you hear are incredible. Not for the faint-hearted if camping solo. I loved it, but a friend came to visit for one night only and said she was petrified of all the strange sounds. I will most definitely be staying here again. What a wonderful place, with friendly owners and lovely Lucy the dog.
I stayed here in August 2013 and found it to be a lush little place. The staff were really welcoming, including the little Jack Russell who guided me around the different pitches. Each pitch feels secluded and peaceful in the woodland and I had a very restful night's sleep. It['s so nice to be able to have a real camp fire and here, the logs and kindling are provided for a small charge. There are some lovely pubs just a short and beautiful walk down the lane too.
I would highly recommend this site!
We stayed at Hole Station in June 2013 and had a wonderful time. Such a perfectly peaceful place. We used the rent a tent pitch and it was amazing....everything we needed and more was provided for us. Such a relaxing option - no stress of pitching our tent or drying it out before heading home. We were walking on the beach less than an hour after arriving on site. Loved being able to have a camp fire every night. Thank you so much to Greg and Liz for creating this wonderful site and for their advice especially about cycling and walking routes. Loved our stay here - one of those places I want to tell everyone about and yet at the same time want to keep it a secret all to myself!
Camping at its best!
We stayed at hole station for two nights in August 2013, it is absolutely amazing! We stayed on pitch 23 which, even though close to everything felt like we were the only ones there! It was so cosy and perfect being able to have a camp fire at night (with fire pack bought from Greg!). Everything about hole station is great and our only complaint is that we had to go home!
Hole station is an absolute gem of a campsite. It’s difficult to imagine any tweak at all which would improve it. The whole set-up is so sympathetically done, yet with such an exacting eye for detail, that you can only doff your hat to Greg the owner and thank him from the bottom of your much replenished heart. Very easy to get to following the website directions, you’ll find yourself in a small woodland heaven in the heart of some of Devon’s best and yet quietest countryside. The handful of pitches are magically scattered off a winding circular track through the trees. Each pitch has a thoughtfully provided shelter, fire-pit and log seating alongside a clearing for your tent. It’s a delight to do the whole circuit, exploring each vacant pitch, before choosing your own (that’s the most difficult part). The compost toilet block is never more than 60m away and is so well maintained (and explained) that I for one am a convert. This is true camping for people who come to really appreciate this beautiful environment. There is lovely cycling or walking in every direction and nearby pubs for an early pint or two (you wouldn’t miss the fire now would you?) we look forward to going back soon.
Hole Station Adult Only Campsite
What a fantastic place to stay. My wife and I stayed for four nights. The first day we arrived it was pouring with rain and we broke our tent putting it up!!! We went to nearest Tesco and bought an emergency one. As it was still raining Greg the owner let us stay in his pre-erected tent free of charge for the night. There is lots to do if you want to go out or just stay in and have a camp fire... the only sounds you can hear are the animals. Best of all is the delicious sausages and bacon Greg sells are locally produced. The showers were always nice and hot. I cannot fault in any way and have already booked another visit for August....cant wait!

We stayed in Hole Station for three nights in May over the Bank Holiday weekend. We arrived quite early, and Greg was there to meet us. He showed us around and gave us a layout of the site and allowed us to have a walk around and choose which pitch we wanted. They are all great, but we opted for number 5 as it was off the main path and was very private. The pitches are perfect, nice and flat and each one comes with a kitchen shelter with wooden benches. We loved the campfires and the log kits from reception are perfect.
There are plenty of locally sourced delicious produce to buy too, including homemade ice-cream with flavors such as malty munch, double choc chip and raspberry ripple! Also. eggs straight from the onsite hens as well as amazing sausages and bacon for cooking on the campfire for breakfast!
On one day we hired bikes from the site, and went for a lovely cycle on the quiet lanes that surround the campsite. We had lots of nice walks too in the area and the 'Torridge Inn' nearby served some great pub grub.
We just loved Hole Station, they have thought of everything and strike a nice balance between being on hand to help if you need it, bit also leaving you to do your own thing. We would recommend it to anyone and everyone! We just wish they allowed dogs, or will allow dogs in the future!!

We echo all the other reviews on here - we had a fantastic week at Hole Station, it was the perfect campsite for us and definitely the place to go to relax and get away from it all. Set in woodlands, each pitch is secluded and has its own cooking shelter (not that we needed it as it was sunny every day!) and fire pit. Greg and his wife who run the site are very helpful and friendly, and stocked some great local food (we recommend the fig yoghurt!). Lots of interesting birds and animals to see on the campsite, there are horses, goats and chickens and we also saw a barn owl.
There was plenty of activities to do nearby, we hired bikes from the campsite and toured the local area, stopping for a swim in a local river. The coast is nearby for surfing, and Dartmoor for hiking. The local pub (20mins walk) served a good pint and meal.
Probably the best campsite we've been to in the UK and we'll be coming back!
Hole Station Adult Only Campsite
I camped here a year ago during the extremely wet Spring bank holiday. High winds and persistent rain meant that most people camping at other sites gave up or got evicted, but the shelter provided by the trees at Hole Station sheltered us from the worst of it. There was a very warm welcome when we arrived, which extended to providing us with a quickly erected tent for the first night so that we didn't have to cope with putting our 8 person tent up (there were only 3 of us!) in the pouring rain after a very long journey.
This was the loveliest site I've ever stayed at - the trees give you a lot of privacy and space from other campers. I like the site's approach to sustainability and the environment. If you haven't tried compost toilets, try them! They're cleaner and less smelly than flushing ones at many sites! I look forward to returning here as soon as I can!

After reading reviews this site really lived up to my expectations. If I was pushed to list the best thing about this site it would be the fact that there are no children allowed! The only noises we heard at night and in the morning were the wildlife, ideal. The facilities were clean and did their job and there was hot water for the showers. My only (tiny) suggestion would be that there were more toilets available, as we visited during a bank holiday weekend when the site was full, in the mornings there could be a queue for both the toilets and the showers. Having said that, if you time it right, you can avoid the queues. We enjoyed being able to have a log fire, rare on most campsites, and the shelter on each pitch is a great idea. Greg is very helpful and friendly, giving us maps to borrow so we could find our way to the local pubs and information about local events. They have done a great job with this site and we will definitely return.
Hole Station Adult Only Campsite
The most perfect peaceful campsite we have stayed at. If you want to be woken by the beautiful sound of bird song and nothing else. If you want to pitch your tent in a beautiful clearing in the woods, with loads of space. If you want to spend your evenings around a campfire watching the embers die down as the sun goes down. If you are fed up of trying to get some peace & quiet on your camping trip and have to put up with the kids in the next pitch kicking a ball against your tent in a field full of people. Then this is the site for you.
Yes they have facilities of the eco / compost variety, but they are clean and in keeping with the ethos of the site. I would not have wanted it any other way. Initially you do think oh my god we have to move all our gear by wheel barrow but once you have pitched you soon realise why. Each pitch comes with a shelter to sit under, so no excuse to not light the fire every night whatever the weather, which was great when the typical British weather did it's thing. At reception there is also some local produce available. We tried pretty much all of it but can only wax lyrical about the local yoghurt's and ice creams. They lived up to expectations. The only downfall was we were not there long enough to try all the flavours - something to look forward to when we return.
I could tell you which pitch we had, as I think it was the best one, as we could not see any other tent or hear anyone else ( we had full choice as we arrived on the Thursday before the Bank Holiday ) but then it may be taken when we return and something's are best kept secret..Loved it all well done Greg.. Watch out for Lucy the cutest little dog which followed us around.
Hole Station Adult Only Campsite
Just back from a great Bank Holiday weekend, brilliant campsite, Greg and Liz offer a friendly welcome and the site feels like a true back to nature experience. The pitches are dotted around a woods, each has a pre erected shelter and campfire area. Just buy your logs and get the fire going, you can rent a grill and cook over a log fire - brilliant. There are pubs in the local villages, but to be honest we loved staying at our pitch with the fire going all night, watching the stars. Facilities are just fine, and the Eco-friendly side is really well done without being intrusive - all in all a well thought out site with lots of great touches. Have to admit to thinking twice about posting a review - this one is a real find.
Back to nature camping made easy
We visited this site in September 2011. When we arrived we were the only people on the campsite so it was very quiet (a bit spooky at night in fact!). We stayed in one of the rent-a-tents, as we had had enough of taking a wet tent home with us! These were just regular tents, with a airbed in them. You got your own under cover cooking area with everything you needed to cook with, plus a chimnea, which we enjoyed huddling in front of in the cold September evenings! You could buy wood and local produce from reception and the nearest supermarket was a short drive away. We were made to feel very welcome by the owners and appreciated the efforts they go to to make the site environmentally sustainable. We enjoying visiting the local area, we went on a lovely walk at a gorge (National Trust) and visited Bude one day too. There were just two of us but I think it would be better to come in a group next time, I can imagine it would be great with all your friends sat under the under cover cooking area.
Enjoyable stay, and despite 10 hours of heavy rain we managed to stay dry. Very large and flat pitch, about 5 mins walk to the facilities. The toilets are clean, and the instructions are clearly labelled, however we did have to queue on occasions as there’s only two toilets. The shower was lovely and hot. Excellent recycling facilities, and fresh eggs available each morning.
what a great place to stay. We ejoyed it even having to leave our beloved camper parked in the car park and used a wheel barrow to take our bedding and food to our rent a tent with it’s own dinning tent and fire pit in a wooded clearing. If you like a quiet peaceful place to stay it’s here compost toilets and all . Just a short walk from a pub 15mins along the cycle path which is just outside the campsite. At night sat around a campfire with a glass of wine looking up to the stars what more can you ask for? we will be back there soon.
