Under the Milky Way
Combe Martin, Devon
If your idea of Cool Camping involves escaping to a secluded countryside spot, then the fully furnished Bell tents at Under the Milky Way should be scribbled somewhere on your ‘to do’ list. Sandwiched between some of Devon’s finest beaches and Exmoor National Park, this eco-friendly site remains uniquely calm and well hidden from the bucket-and-spade brigade that takes over the surrounding coastline during the height of summer.
In a quiet, rural location, this grassy slope of land is surrounded by an enchanting woodland that makes for a very private place to spend a night. There’s ample space for families who want to throw a ball around, or simply kick back in deck-chairs while they wait for the BBQ to heat up. Only the twittering of birdsong breaks the peaceful ambiance, and at night (you might have guessed from the name) this site is a fantastic place to see the stars. With no electricity in the Bell tents (only candles and solar lights) you get an incredible view of the sparkling night sky, and if you’re still desperate to charge your phone, a plug socket can be found at the nearby communal washing-up area. Inside, the tents are spacious, comfortable and furnished with a wood burner to keep you warm on a chilly evening.
When you decide to venture from your idyllic isolation, you’ll realise that you're far from being stranded, as a wealth of attractions are within easy driving distance. Closest at hand is the village of Combe Martin (2.5 miles) with its own beach, a range of shops and some great eateries. Then, heading a little further, there’s a handful of other sublime beaches, many of which are bustling with surfers who flock to the Devon coast in the summer. Surfing is a theme you’ll find running through the area, and no more so than in the main harbour town of Ilfracombe, bursting with beachware shops and the centre for most outdoor activities. To the east lies Exmoor National Park, riddled with good footpaths, the trail along the heritage coast being a particular highlight.
Between outdoor activities and the family attractions (such as Watermouth Castle & The Big Sheep Farm Park), there's enough to tire anyone out, and as the night closes in, you can relax beneath the canvas of your very own Bell tent. With no turn-up-and-pitch camping, caravans or indeed anything other than the four Bell tents, you're almost guaranteed to remain undisturbed. The cost of this secluded location is the requirement of four wheels, but it’s a price worth paying to escape the crowds and enjoy this hidden glamping gem.

A little gem!
This was our first experience glamping, but we are seasoned campers. A lovely out of the way place, with a great welcome. The kids loved that they could runaround and be safe. The tents and kitchen area are well kitted out. Would definitely recommend.
We have had a lovely stay, the tents are roomy with everything you could need, complete with a great wood burner. Only 4 tents on site which meant it was really peaceful and great to have your own bathroom. Bridget and Gus were really welcoming and as we didn't know the area offered tips on places to go. Thank you.
Fab first time
Bridget is very welcoming and looked after us very well. It's was out fist time glamping with our 2 year old and he absolutely loved it despite the wet weather. The camp site is in an ideal location with lots to see and do, all near by with a short drive. Would definitely recommend this site to anyone who wanted to experience of camping with comforts x hope to visit again next year...
Our first experience of glamping and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Loved the cosy tents, the wood burner and the peace and quiet of life under the stars. The BBQ and camp fire was great in the evenings too. Excellent base for walks in Exmoor and along the coast. We enjoyed the beach at Croyde, and the cream tea at Mortehoe!

Under the milky way was a ideal base to explore other parts of North Devon . we enjoyed days out at beaches, villages and local fishing trips, even a spot of clay pigeon shooting as my children are mixed age we found things to do for them all and then come back to our tent for a relaxing evening weather permitting a few beers and a barbecue and my son loved the fact we had a log burner and a fire pit outside provided thankyou once again for a hassle free holiday.

A great few days watching the kids play "free range"
Lovely comfortable tents (even in quite bad weather conditions!!) with well equipped kitchen area and everything you need for your stay (even loo roll, which I didn't expect!). The tents are set well apart in Bridget's field/garden but you can't see the house as you are down slope. The loo/shower block was extremely clean.
The best part of the holiday was watching the kids climb trees/roll down slopes and make friends to play cricket/play football with. No telephones/devices/TV's in site - heaven! A real break away from it all but in close proximity of Combe Martin and Woolacombe. The Dinosaur Park at Combe Martin was a good day out for our children aged 3 & 6 years.
Hope to be back one day soon!
Super location, a charming and peaceful site. The tents were kitted out with everything we needed, hosts were very accomodating, and the children loved it.
The grounds are cosy enough to make friends, but spacious enough to allow room to play without getting under any one's feet.
Easy access to all the attractions in the area, including the superb Woolacombe beach.
Would certainly recommend to anyone considering a stay.
A fantastic introduction to glamping
Bridget and Gus were very welcoming, bearing with us as we got used to lighting the stove! Although the weather conspired against us (we came back from one day out to find Bridget cradling our torn awning!), we had a lovely time. The kids loved the site, feeling free to run around and explore, the beds were very comfortable and having our own private bathroom was very pleasant (plus the water was very hot!). The location is extremely convenient for both Lynton and Lynmouth and Ilfracombe and Woolacombe.
Combe Martin itself is lovely with an amazing beach and countless rock pools, places to eat are plentiful at reasonable prices.
On the nights when the sky was clear, the site was exactly as described, under the Milky Way. We are absolutely planning to return!
Everything you could wish for.
We recently spent a week Under the Milky Way . The tent had everything we could wish for and the facilities were excellent. Bridget was very attentive and checked on us daily to see if we needed anything such as more wood for the stove. The stove kept us toasty warm at night as the usual British weather for August wasn't the best. We found plenty of activities in the area to suit everyone's needs. On a clear night the stars are amazing to just sit and enjoy. A great week away so, Thanks again Bridget and Gus .
A long weekend of relaxing under canvas with the family in pleasant surroundings with everything we needed laid on. The site was quiet and secluded and the owners were attentive and nothing was to much trouble.
An attractive and peaceful location
We stayed here for a week in July 2014. I found it peaceful and relaxing. My two children, aged 5 and 7, had a lovely time and spent most of the time playing outside with friends when we were onsite - there are no cars in the camping field. The coast and countryside around Combe Martin is attractive, and the pubs all seem to have gardens and playgrounds. We were always able to find something fun and interesting to do.
Under the Milky Way is well run, with a light touch, and the facilities are as described. All in all, a happy discovery for us!
Wonderful peaceful and secluded website
We had a wonderful week here. The tents contain everything you need and are very comfortable. Beaches are a very short drive away and lots of other family attractions. The campsite is very secluded and it was wonderful sitting out at night watching all the wildlife (we had a regular frog visitor) and stars. The individual bathrooms were great and we had everything we needed. Bridget is very welcoming and we loved Woof the dog. I think our best recommendation is that our 4 year old daughter refused to get into her car seat and cried on leaving.
Peace and quiet in the countryside
We had a great five nights at Under the Milky Way. Bridget looked after us very well, driving our luggage to and from the car and checking on us each day to see if we had all we needed. We loved the tent and it was decked out with everything we needed, including wood for the wood-burner which kept us warm at night. Our little bathroom was clean and convenient. We would thoroughly recommend the site to anyone looking for peace and quiet. It was also well located for local beach towns. Don't miss a visit to Mortehoe which has fantastic views of the coastline.
A little piece of heaven on earth
We have visited for 3 consecutive years and have had the most magical experience camping here. The location is stunning and Bridget and Gus are so welcoming. The area is full of adventures and good old fashioned family fun. Come rain or shine, the tents are very cosy, and sitting out in the evening looking up to the stars is good for the soul. It is a privilege to spend time in such a wonderful place that just keeps drawing us back.
