Extreme camping on a unique island
Lundy Island, a bold outcrop of granite, juts over 120 metres into the air from the Bristol Channel. It’s just 11 miles from the North Devon coast, but feels more remote; the landscape is barren and desolate, with wild, towering cliffs, wind-battered fields and little in the way of trees or shelter. With a permanent population of around 20 in summer and a good few less in winter, it’s obviously not the most hospitable of places. Let’s be honest, this isn’t camping for beginners. In fact, it probably doesn’t sound like the place for camping at all! But despite its bleak, isolated location, a few nights in a tent here can be invigorating and truly spectacular. When the wind drops and the sun appears, this may well be England’s most magical camping experience. Lundy is managed by the Landmark Trust, who maintain the island for the benefit of tourists. They operate a ferry service during summer from Ilfracombe and Bideford, and a helicopter service in the winter. Like all the best natural campsites, Lundy Island’s is essentially a field with nothing in it. Its peaceful, remote location feels a million miles away from modern life. The focal point on the island is The Marisco Tavern. It never shuts, so at any time of day or night, there’s always a place to take shelter and swap stories of tents blowing away in the Atlantic winds. Next door, the island shop is amazingly well stocked – apparently, it does a good trade in heavyduty tent pegs.

Food and drink
Lundy lamb is famous and delicious. Lambs are reared on their mothers’ milk and the grasses and herbs on the island. The Marisco Tavern (01237 431831) is not only the nearest pub but the only pub! Serves tasty food including Lundy lamb and locally caught fish; it’s also the place to chat to the islanders or the warden and to check the noticeboard for what’s going on.
