A warm welcome awaits at one of Cornwall's best-located campsites

In astronomy, the circumstellar habitable zone is the name given to the universal region where conditions are perfect for supporting life. Not too hot, nor too cold, you might know this foundation of astrophysics more commonly as the 'Goldilocks zone'. Here at Cool Camping, we employ similarly empirical methodology when searching for that perfectly-placed campsite. And nestled in the heart of western Cornwall, we've found just such a spot... and nary a family of bears in sight!

Five minutes inland from the coast, Treglisson announces itself with a swinging green sign beckoning you down a quiet country lane. And the site which reveals itself is, as promised, not too big; not too small; but just right. The spacious main camping field comprises 26 grass pitches (all with electric hook-ups), with half a dozen hardstandings for campervans and motorhomes. As it lies a little inland, you are sheltered from the coastal gales, but still just an achievable walking distance to the nearest beach. Though it sits on a slight slope, pitching is no great hardship. What's more, conscientious owner Keri Smith is sure to give ample berth between neighbouring pitches. In the school summer holidays when the crowds descend upon Cornwall, Keri also opens a smaller, off-grid field that can accommodate an extra eight pitches.

Situated on the site of a former farm orchard, Treglisson is a verdant, herbaceous hideaway embraced by trees and hedgegrows that are a magnet for an array of avian tenants. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for buzzards, sparrowhawks, woodpeckers and, as dusk descends, tawny owls and bats spooking the rabbits and frequent visiting foxes.

While it might not be the campsite of choice for teens, Treglisson is refreshingly uncommercial which means a convivial, communal vibe reigns. Amusement-wise, highlights include an outside play area with sandpit, plus a small covered second play area should the Cornish skies uncharacteristically darken with rain clouds.

Keri is on hand to help with anything in an attentive-but-not overbearing way. And, unlike a few campsite owners that spring to mind, he isn't totalitarian about rules... just keep the noise to a minimum after 11pm, out of courtesy to your canvas compadres. He's also a mine of local knowledge, so whatever leaflets and maps you don't find in the small info-shed, just ask Keri for his pick of local places to go.

Hayle is just 20 minutes' walk downhill (30 minutes back uphill) via the main B road into town. England's sunshine highway, the A30, is also easily picked up from Treglisson and will take you all the way to Land's End and Cornwall's innumerable lovely locales.

While modest in scale, Treglisson has nailed that happy medium between space and seclusion for camping couples, and a buzzing kid-friendly centre where the littl'uns can make friends in the play areas. It's a testament to the design and all-round good vibes at Treglisson that guests return year after year. Like we said – just right.

Getting There

Heading west on the A30, you will come to a large roundabout just outside Hayle. Take the 4th exit into Hayle and at the first mini roundabout turn left (Treglisson is signposted from this roundabout). Travel a mile up the hill, under the bridge, past the golf course and you will see the sign on the left. Turn down the lane and you will find the campsite at the end.

There is a bus stop at the bottom of the hill by the mini roundabout and the nearest train station is Hayle. If your train doesn't stop there, the next station is St Erth. Arrangements can be made to collect people from the station or bus stop.

A six day stay

The site was easy to find, with clear signs from the A30. When we arrived we got a very friendly welcome from the site manager. The site itself looked lovely with lots of autumnal colour, being surrounded by woods. The facilities were well maintained and if the weather had been warmer we might well have made use of the barbeque provided, there was a good playground for children. The site was dog friendly with a lovely footpath running away from the site. We didn't need to make use of the shop during our stay but it looked well stocked. Overall it was a very quiet site although there were several other people on site the whole time we were there it felt very spacious and you could not hear the traffic from the A30.

Friendly, Clean and Tidy with Great Facilities

A lovely campsite located in close proximity to all the popular destinations. Facilities were exceptionally clean, the showers were hot and a great pressure. Major supermarkets less than five minutes away with takeaways that deliver through Just Eat. There was a washing machine and tumble dryer which worked well and was easy to use. We needed an extension lead for the electric cable, they were more than happy to supply one free of charge. We were extremely with the campsite, facilities and hosts and will definitely recommend and return ourselves.

Wonderful week

Had the most wonderful week away with my partner and two dogs. Loads of dog friendly areas to walk. Friendly host and very clean showers/toilets. I would recommend this place to all my friends and family and most definitely will be staying in the future again. Highley recommended and great location to visit all the places down south.

Lovely tranquil space in a great location.

A lovely campsite with easy access for local beaches and a short drive to the park and ride for St Ives. There are a couple of supermarkets very near by and the site also has a small shop for your everyday needs. Clean facilities and friendly staff, would definately go back.

Amazing stay first time camping

After a horrendous journey down spending 6 hrs on the side of the road, we finally made it to Treglisson. Keri was so lovely and reassuring from the moment i messaged to say we had broken down to the moment we arrived. On arrival we were shown to our pitch and got told they were keeping the shop open a little later incase we needed anything (stiff drink). We finally finished setting up at 10pm. Everything about Treglisson is just fabulous. The staff, the facilities, the campers, everyone was just so lovely and polite. We met some wonderful camping neighbour's who we got friendly with and they reccomend places for us to go and visit as it was our first time in Cornwall. We loved it that much we managed to persuaded my parents to come down and we extend our booking so we left on the Saturday as they arrived. We really did enjoy our first time camping and can't wait to come again and join you next year. Highly reccomend Thank-you once again

First time camping! Amazing!

We have had the most wonderful week at Treglisson campsite, it was the first time we have camped so I was apprehensive but I cannot tell you how much we have enjoyed it. Everyone on the campsite was so helpful, the facilities are lovely and clean and we made lots of lovely new friends. We have a two year old so he loved the outside play area. We arrived a bit earlier than anticipated and sent a quick message whilst we were on the way, and the pitch was ready for us when we arrived. There are the towan beaches which are a short drive away or there is also Hayle beach which is close by. We loved it so much we have booked to come back. Thank you for a wonderful time and memories we will never forget and can’t wait to make more of in June!

A brilliant base with great facilities

As a frequent traveller unable to take to the skies at the moment I booked our first ever camping trip. Treglisson were fantastic at answering all of our pre travel questions, provided pictures of facilities etc to put my partners mind at ease and made the booking & check in process so easy. The site was perfect for us with spotless facilities, cleaned regularly and fully covid compliant. The team were so helpful in making recommendations for local pubs/restaurants to try on our arrival before we found our feet. There is a BBQ area which can we used if you wish to and plenty of bins and recycling areas. The site was very well organised, clean and tidy & highly recommended from us. Treglisson is a great base for any Cornwall first timers like us. We found ourselves centrally located to drive to all of the main sights and must see's. There is a shop on site with a small selection of essentials (wine is also an essential) which was perfect for those forgotten items, ours was toothpaste. We had two dogs with us, they ask dogs to be kept on leads and there were plenty of dogs on the site, everyone was very respectful of the rules. Treglisson is about a 5 minute drive to Lidl and 10 minutes to Hayle itself. The nearest beach is Gwithian which is about 15 minutes away. Thank you for making our first camping trip so enjoyable. We will definitely be returning in the future.

Friendly and welcoming. Great campsite

Great little campsite, so friendly and welcoming, exactly what you want after a long drive down to Cornwall. Pitches are big enough, with space in between to not feel overcrowded. Lovely little shop on site. We visited places all over Cornwall and it felt like a good base. Will definitely be re visiting!!

Gorgeous, friendly little campsite

Stayed with my partner and our dog and found the Treglisson campsite to be clean, friendly and well set out. Has a nice area of kids to play in but wasn’t overly family/child focused. The owners were very helpful and approachable and Stewart even offered to drive us the ten mins to the beach. We decided to go exploring instead and followed a nice path called Strawberry Lane all the way down to the North Quay which was a gorgeous golden sandy beach which was dog friendly (approx 45min walk). We didn’t realise there were such beautiful beaches in Hayle so was great to stumble on them! Whilst there, we stayed for dinner at the newly opened Lula restaurant overlooking the water - serving amazing fresh seafood and ribs (not licensed at the moment but check their website). The small on site shop is well stocked and we also pre-ordered some freshly baked pastries for breakfast. Showers and toilets were super clean and water pressure was good (v important to me!). My only comment would be that I would have have liked some walking route maps displayed (Walk to beach/walk to pub/good dog walk etc) - they haven’t been open long and haven’t had the chance to try the walks around much themselves so with time I’m sure they will!

Lovely friendly site

Not only was this a great price. It delivered everything it advertised and the owners were lovely and helpful . We had a sea view ! Pitches and whole site were spotless even the toilets. A lovely setting .

Very clean, lovely site

Lovely, clean site, we never queued for the showers which are proper showers. We were in the off grid field, the ground does slope in places, the kids were sliding off their beds. Playground is fab for wearing the kids out. Hayle beach is no longer dog friendly though so we had to go further out for beach fun. At night the only thing making noise was the owls, lol

Lovely place to stay!

Just came back from spending four nights here and it was amazing start to finish! Our electric cable wouldn’t reach the socket, so we were lent a massive extension cable instantly and without any issues, which we really appreciated! Really good place to camp and a great base to have for travelling around Cornwall! Friendly owners and really couldn’t recommend it more! Will definitely book again on our next stay! Thank you!

Great site with helpful and friendly owners

We spent 3 nights at Treglisson on the non-electric pitch. The facilities were spotless and everything was made Covid-safe. The shop is a handy addition for any essentials and the fresh pastries that you can order for the morning are a lovely touch. The owners were very friendly and helpful from the outset - even giving us a lift into town to save us cycling in the rain on the first day! Hayle has everything you need in terms of supermarkets, bars and restaurants and the beach is gorgeous. Would definitely recommend.

Well organised small campsite

Treglisson is a well run, attractively maintained, well organised camp site. The toilets and shower block were kept very clean and tidy - I was surprised to find them having their first clean of the day at 5.30am! No queues for the showers or toilets. Good play area for children in the middle of the site. Some shady plots which made a nice change. Able to find relatively level ground. Free wifi on site and good phone reception. More wasps than normal but I saw several wasp traps up. A 20 min cycle to Gwithian, which is all the beach anyone could ever want!

Lovely little site!

We really enjoyed our stay here. The site is small and perfectly formed. There's just enough facilities to make the site comfortable without it being over developed. The location is great- quiet, rural, peaceful, close to beaches, and local shops to make things easy. Everything felt clean, neat and tidy and safe for children.

Amazing people, so tidy and clean everywhere, so good location it is only 10 min drive to all beaches and all main shops is in 2 min drive. Little paradise for family’s with childrens! Very good playing area, becomes is located in the centre of camping and you could control your child in any location. Toilet and other facilities was so clean and tidy! We are definitely back for more longer time! Thank you a lot for that time!!!

A nice brief visit

We arrived late but it was not an issue, the owner cheerfully showed us the pitch. The showers were a bit of a long walk away but were clean. There were some portaloos in our field but did not use them as we had our own toilet. Take some insect repellent as there were lots of midges. A quiet pitch, very peaceful... Thank you.

Beautiful friendly campsite

Lovely and great value campsite. Good mix of pitches - we had a lovely secluded spot in a field away from the main (family-friendly) area which felt very private and spacious so they cater for all sorts of groups perfectly. Very helpful owner and lots of clean spacious facilities. Keen to come back again soon.

Great little campsite

Enjoyed our stay, warm showers, a little shop on-site, friendly staff. Close Drive to m&s food and Lidl. Not sure if there is much in walking distance but the on-site shop makes up for it. A great fish and chip shop in the neighbouring village. Only will say is it’s good for families and kids but if you are looking for quite adult only probably not your first choice. Overall great campsite would happily return

Hidden Gem - Secret Garden

Treglisson Well the last of our 7 nights is here and we are sat in the motorhome on our pitch looking out onto a hidden gem in Cornwall We came across this site by chance - mentioned on Cool Camping. From the moment we contacted them to book we received perfect communication. The friendly approach was apparent immediately. As we drove along the private drive we left the road behind and past cute stone cottages then we entered a secret garden. Pulling on to site Keri was there to greet us and show us to our pitch. Forget conformity, there are no rows and rows of pitches. Each pitch is snuggled amongst the hedges and trees. Mainly grass with a few hard standing for motorhomes. In the centre of the site is a play area for younger children. Now we did not travel with children just two adults and the dog. For some this would be off putting but the sound of children playing in the sandpit or on the swings was lovely. The other campers ranged from young families, mature couples or those staying the odd night in a camper. All super friendly. We were even given chocolate by one camper on our first night, when missed the shop. Stopping just after the shut down for covid we weren’t sure how we would feel. But Keri and her family work endlessly cleaning the facilities at regular intervals in the day. The site is spotless and gel is provided. The pitches are large and therefore social distancing is easy. We felt welcomed as guests and enjoyed many a chat about the site and local area.m - even though they were busy. They have plans to improve the site which we feel will be hard as to us it nearly perfect already! Thank you for such a lovely stay. We will definitely return- we just hope that you don’t become so popular that there is no space for us!

So sweet!

What a cute little campsite! Staff were super friendly and attentive, the facilities were simple but clean, everything regarding COVID-19 was clear, concise and worked perfectly! Would definitely visit again with family and friends. The only very slight downside was that our tent was on a bit of a slope but that was it! :)

Couldn’t of asked for a better campsite to visit on our first trip. My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights, Such a lovely experience. Lovely place and lovely staff. All facilities were clean to high standard, cute little shop for any essentials needed, shops and beaches a small drive away. We will be visiting this campsite again and will be taking our friends and family to join! Highly recommend.

Perfect campsite

Our first family camping trip couldn’t have been at a better campsite! Great location, 5 min drive away from the supermarket/essential shops and 10 mins away from fantastic beaches. The campsite pitches are really well placed around the border with the children’s play area in the centre. Onsite facilities were scrupulously clean with a few great extra little touches to be enjoyed by everyone. (Lots of benches, Communal BBQ and washing up area, shop) We will definitely be returning and will highly recommend to others.

Overall great camp site

Great campsite hosted by a super friendly and helpful family. The facilities are top notch and spotlessly clean. Their response to covid has been thorough and felt safe staying with them. They clean regularly, have plenty signs up everywhere and huge tubs of hand sanitiser near the loos. The shop is a great addition with many useful and local products. The site itself is in great condition and well looked after. Would highly recommend.

Excellent campsite with great response to COVID

Keri, Stuart and Tina provide an absolutely brilliant campsite which has adapted incredibly well to the current COVID precautions. The information provided beforehand was thorough and concise regarding changes to the campsite to mitigate against COVID. The site is quiet and very tidy, with lovely morning and afternoon sun, and clean throughout. The shower and toilet blocks are clean, with good information about cleaning and lots of alcohol gel and anti-viral spray. A lovely campsite, which has been very well set up to make it feel both welcoming and safe

Outstanding

I'd like to thank everyone at Treglisson for making our stay outstanding. We've never felt so comfortable at a campsite before their facilities are comprehensive. We loved our stay so much we booked an extra night. Treglissons response to COVID-19 has been efficient and effective. All over the site there are facilities to ensure that you can sanitiser areas and also yourself. I never once felt threatened by dirty surfaces or people not following the rules on site. This camp site is dog friendly, we found there was plenty of space to have our dogs on their stakes. A huge thank you to everyone at Treglisson camp site for making our pre wedding holiday extra special. All the best, Rebecca and Tom Other notes: Outstanding facilities. Friendly owners, nice atmosphere. Close to main roads, shops and tourist destinations. Safe. Spacious. Thank you so much.

Super little site

What a little gem! Keri couldn't be more helpful and the site was spotless. There was a little shop selling the basics. Nice walk to the beach if a little hilly, but once you are there all is forgiven as it is a beautiful beach. We went in a motorhome and had a hard standing pitch backed by a beautiful wood and a hedge between pitches, it was very generously sized and definitely didn't feel cramped. If we are in the area again we will be sure to make it a stop off!

Great stay for the family in a fantastic location

Me, my partner an 3 children spent 4 nights here the moment the ease of lock down allowed. We found the site superbly located, central to all of the attractions we wanted to visit. Set within trees it makes the Cornish windy days and nights far more tolerable for tent camping. The site is very well run and the staff are more than helpful and go the extra mile. The shower blocks and toilets were kept immaculate for the duration of our stay and the onsite shop was plentiful. A short 2 mile walk to the beach (a lovely one at that) and the Town of Hayle 1 mile away means that you don't have to venture far if you don't want to. All in all we found it a great family destination. One that we would highly recommend. The kids made plenty of friends on site and loved it. We shall certainly visit here again. Thank you Treglisson
