Cornish camping and glamping, with arts, crafts and activities on site and the beaches of Newquay just a stroll away

Coastal Valley isn’t just a campsite. Imaginative owner Tanya also bills the place as a ‘crafts site’, with willow weaving, slate painting and fabric printing on offer in a pop-up craft tent at peak times. A blackboard propped up outside the reception-cum-farm shop is used to spell out any activities that day, swirled in neat, chalky handwriting.

What’s clear, though, is that the creativity of the owners knows no bounds. The philosophy behind their craftworks seems to extent to the campsite beyond – a veritable collage of the camping world. Around its borders young and mature trees combine, linked by colourful pampas grasses and the dusty yellow of gorse bushes, and a narrow stream gurgles along the southern edge. It all frames an eclectic interior where there’s something for every camper.

For ‘regular’ folk, follow the hard driveway past reception and an oval loop provides access to the 25 grass pitches. For maximum privacy pitch your tent closest to the stream or stay up near the driveway for access to electricity. Coastal Valley operates a low-traffic policy, so once you’ve pitched your tent or parked up the caravan, campers are requested to return the car to the main parking area. The result only accentuates the tranquillity of the setting. Children play safely, you can always sleep soundly and the stream and birds can all be heard.

Glampers, meanwhile, have a range of options. There's a safari tent, nudged against the trees in a far corner of the site, fully kitted out for up to six people, and there's a timber pod for couples. A ‘BBQ lodge’, meanwhile, sleeps a further four people, with bed fitted along four sides of the hexagonal structure all surrounding an inbuilt barbecue. Finally, for the really adventurous, Tanya and the team have recently parked up a converted mobile library that once rumbled down the lanes lending books to rural readers. It's a very quirky vintage find and, today, has a double bed, sofas (which can sleep an additional two children), and a small kitchen.

From the campsite it’s around a mile to surfer-central Watergate Bay, walking through the sheep dotted fields and following the gentle course of the stream. And the same distance to Porth Beach – flanked by rocky promontories making it an ideal location for safe family bathing. Popular Towan Beach, too, is within easy reach, with all three backed by cafés and waterfront bars. If you don’t stay down at the waterfront for a pint of the local bitter then be sure to wander up the slope behind the campsite for a view across the beach instead. The Atlantic sunsets are stunning.

Platinum awarded toilet and shower facilities, six showers, eight toilets, disabled facilities, hair dryers and shaving sockets. Picnic tables, water points, recycling everything possible. A chemical disposal point for the vans. A communal kitchen chalet has two gas hob cookers,  a small microwave, a double sink and drainer, two fridges and a small freezer. Basic surf wetsuit washing facilities and hanging space. Bring your own kitchen utensils, crockery and cutlery (though a few pots, pans, plates and cups are available). A craft tent runs regular activities (especially on wet afternoons), including willow weaving, wet felting, silk painting, morsbag recycling projects and slate painting. There is a wild play area for children and a rope swing over the steam.

Suitable For

Campers, glampers, tents, campervans, caravans, dogs on camping field, couples, families – yes. Groups should ring in advance to discuss.

Nearby Newquay is the Cornish surf capital and to its north Watergate Bay is considered the key beach for hitting the waves. Joel at West Country Surf (07772 251 778) offer family friendly surfing lessons from Watergate Bay and you can also do coasteering, kayaking, paddle boarding at Fistral Beach (01637 498200), and expansive Crantock Beach. Busy Towan and Porth Beach are best for bathing and, unusually for the South West, the area is great for pet-friendly beaches that allow dogs all year round, Newquay, Polly Joke, Mawgan Porth, Porthcothan, Holywell Bay, Towan Head and Crantock Beach all amongst them.

Food & Drink

The site's farm shop sells essential, locally sourced produce, including excellent Padstow Chough Bakery breads, flans and pies; dry cured bacon, meats and homemade sausages from a local family butcher and free range eggs from a local small holding. There's also a pop-up craft marquee, proper coffee, cake and tea mornings and specialist foodie nights during peak and July–August summer periods. Newquay has something for everyone (and vegans and vegetarians are very well catered for– Tanya and Andy are a goldmine of information for the local bar and café recommendations.

Great experience

I cannot recommend this site enough, beautiful surrounding in a sheltered valley, excellent facilities, better than some hotels I’ve stayed at, and extremely friendly and helpful staff. Very convenient for Newquay’s attractions and all north Cornwall. I will certainly use this site again.

Amazing location

Great suitable for family campsite. Tanya and Andy ( and the rest of the team) are super friendly and helpful. The slate painting and food vans were a great addition to spending all our time at the amazing beaches that are so close to the campsite

Super awesome!!

My girlfriend and I stayed here for a few nights in early September and I highly recommend it. We were made to feel extremely welcome by the staff and they had lots of good advice for us. They also run a little shop near the entrance where you can pick up booze and other treats. The campsite itself is really pretty and proved to be great for stargazing on most nights. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and the kitchen and bathroom facilities are of a high standard. It's a very short drive into Newquay and its beaches from the campsite. As I say, this is highly recommended.

A Hidden Gem of a Campsite

We recently spent 7 nights at Coastal Valley, taking a single pitch for our 4m Bell Tent and 12 x 12'' Event Shelter. From the moment we arrived and met Andy and Tanya, we were made to feel so welcome. Their passion and commitment for what they do at Coastal Valley - providing a great camping experience with a solid, green ethos at the heart of it was clear from the start. Andy takes great pleasure in not only outlining the fantastic facilities available to you on site but also goes to great length to make sure you know what's available in the local area. The shop is well stocked and there is the added luxury of being able to place daily orders for pastries, fresh breads, scones etc from the Chough Bakery. Additionally, we had The Sisters on site for 2 mornings, providing fresh coffee and vegan cakes and pastries; a mobile pizza van, baking fresh stone-baked pizzas one night and a mobile Mexican food stall the next. Properly spoilt were we! The facilities are excellent, with an immaculate shower/toilet block and a shared kitchen, with microwave, gas hobs, 2 washing up basins and a communal fridge freezer to share (great fun playing ice-block Tetris everyday!). The conversations had here and the acquaintances made were excellent. There's a nice big green space in front of the glamping field for French Cricket, rounders etc. The vibe here was lovely too. Not too many pitches in the camping area and plenty of space for the kids to run round, swing on the rope swing over the brook and just generally burn energy! Very quiet at night too; everyone respectful of each other. Boardmasters 2018 was concluding the weekend we arrived and there were party-goers and surfers on site but they were all lovely and added to the overall great vibe at the site. Above all was Andy and Tanya's willingness to help at all times and their omnipresence. Andy rides for the Cornish Blood Bank, so honesty donations to this worthy cause were taken in-lieu of complimentary gas in the kitchen or the hairdryers in the toilets blocks. They were always around, smiling, willing to offer advice on excursions or just share silly stories! Jason was also lovely and should take credit for helping too - along with others I have not credited. Upshot is, we loved this site, would heartily recommend and WILL be returning in the future. Tanya even sourced me a couple of cases of Korev in my our of need! Luke, Caroline & Dexter Deeping St James, Lincs

So good, I'm going back

This is a wonderful little site. Recognising the fallibility of Sat Nav there are excellent signs set up from the point where you Sat Nav will deliver you to the actual site, very clever. The welcome and check in experience is second to none. You quickly gets to grips with where everything is, how to get about locally and how the little farm shop works. The pitches are very generous and you don't feel crowded. The platinum awarding winning shower block is outstanding with good, well powered showers (especially considering you are off grid) and no need to pack loo roll. The kitchen block is well serviced with two good sized fridges to use, a couple of hobs and plenty of power points for the tech charging obsessives (myself included, its all about the percentage). I cannot fault the site in anyway and if you surf, like I do, its a very short run to the great waves at Watergate Bay. Checking the budget and hoping to be back by the end of the summer.

Excellent Camping Site

We had booked an electric pitch for 3 nights and being out first time camping on our own, it was an excellent experience. Andy and Tanya were very warm and friendly; and Andy gave us a brief and informative lay of the land. The campsite is clean, well maintained, peaceful and beautiful and within close proximity to local hotspots; eventhough it feels like you are in your own secluded corner of the world. Access to most basic amenities and afew other options apart from camping in a tent available; we would definitely visit again when we are next in Newquay. Regards Vibhuti and Aravind

Fantastic campsite with outstanding facilities

Me and my husband have just toured around the south west of Britain in a VW campervan and this site was by far our favourite. We stayed for 2 nights mid week in June. It was a small hidden away campsite, with lots to do in the surrounding area. I must note however, there were some narrow roads in the surrounding area which our sat nav took us down. The pitches were well maintained and a good size. Tanya was so welcoming and friendly with great knowledge of the local area. We ate at a lovely pub located a short drive away ( recommended by Tanya). Farm shop on site was very reasonably priced and there was a small but good selection of camping essentials. Also an extra treat was the fresh bread and scones delivered from the local bakery in the morning. We hired a chimenear, which was lovely and good value inc wood and fire lighters each night. The toilet and shower facilities were fantastic, all clean and with 3 ladies toilets and showers, same for the men, warm water and hand soap available, plenty of toilet roll. The showers were spacious and you were able to keep your clothes dry while showering. There was also a hairdryer in the ladies- a nice and much appreciated touch. These were cleaned daily. There was also communal washing up area with a fridge and freezer, This was stocked with lots of cooking equipment if you had forgotten anything, such as pans etc. There was also a stove in the washing area for communal use ( small donation requested for this) however we did not use this facility. There was a very friendly atmosphere on the site and I would reccomend this campsite to others.

So peaceful and friendly.

We have just returned after 4 nights in our VW camper. We fell in love with the campsite, spotless facilities, generous pitches, tucked away, peaceful and everyone on site was so friendly. Tanya was the perfect campsite owner, caring, a mine of information and genuinely interested in what we had been up to. We did a lot of body boarding at Watergate Beach, drank and ate at Wax one evening - good pub grub, lots of walks and we visited the aircraft museum - really interesting displays and you can climb into the cockpit of several vintage jets. We have already booked to come back to the site later in the year.

The friendly welcome, very clean facilities, peace and quiet and great local knowledge.

This is a great friendly site, suitable for couple and families. Perfect location for exploring the coast line from Padstow to Newquay. Can walk into Newquay along the stunning coastline and also the bus runs along the coast road which is a 20 min walk away. Didnt sample the food vans but a great idea. Facilities clean and never had to wait for a shower which was hot every time. Great stream for the kids to enjoy. Will return.

Smashing campsite

Tucked down a leafy road away from the coastal winds and mizzle, we had a great time here. The owners have gone to great lengths to create a fab, almost totally off grid campsite and they are so friendly. and welcoming. The quiet buzz of people chatting around their campfires in the evening was atmospheric but still quietly respectful of everyone else. The water comes from their own spring underneath an owl guardian totem and the bacon from the shop is the best I have tasted in years. You can order fresh bread and pastries for the morning and the little shop is well stocked. We arrived just in time for fresh fish night and had the most delicious salt and pepper squid and there are food nights on some of the other days too by some lovely caterers in fab bespoke vans. The local windsurfer dude in Watergate Bay actually picked our teenagers up from site and whizzed them off for lessons whilst we caught the bus to Padstow - heaven!

A gem of a campsite

We found this site via Cool Camping (thanks!) and it's exactly what we were looking for. The site is picture-perfect, with a stunning valley location. At night you can just hear the bubble of the stream and in the distance the roar of the surf. You can hire a chiminea to enjoy the peace of the evening. It's in a great spot too, near Newquay for amenities but in a totally tranquil rural valley. I happily ran into Watergate bay (about 3km away across private roads) but it was a bit too far for little legs so we drove 5 mins to get there. You could happily spend days pottering around the site, and the hosts Tanya & Andy are fantastic - you can really feel the love they're putting into the place. This was our first Glamping trip (we stayed in the BBQ Lodge) and would highly recommend it, especially if it was in autumn when you'd appreciate the cosy fire even more. We tended to be on the beach until 8pm so didn't make as much use of it as we should have. The kids and we absolutely loved the cute style of the lodge, and the en suite was a welcome addition at 3am. Not that there was anything wrong with the communal facilities - they're among the best we've seen on a campsite. All in all, a brilliant site and we'd love to go back. Thanks for a great week!

The Perfect Campsite??

What a find!!   A lovely, small site, in a fantastic location, with excellent facilities, and run by lovely people!

Situated just 20 minutes' country walk from stunning Watergate Bay, the site is set in a small hidden valley, a world away from the bright lights of Newquay. The (all flat) pitches are arranged round a central open area, with or without the option of electric hookup, and in addition, there are various glamping options too, such as Bell Tents, a camping pod, a vintage American caravan and a rather spectacular looking 'Safari Tent'!

What really makes Coastal Valley stand out though is the friendliness of owners Tanya & Andy, and the amount of thought they've obviously put into getting it "just right".  The new toilet block is one of the most stylish I've ever seen on a campsite, and little touches like the picnic benches dotted around, and the communal kitchen, just show that they've thought about what makes a difference for campers.

Just go - you won't be disappointed!!

Best Kept Secret?

Our family have stayed at this Campsite a number of times; it's Excellent. Tanya and Andy are very welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable about the local area. The facilities are great, the setting idyllic and you feel sheltered within the valley setting. We've camped, stayed in the Safari Tent & BBQ Lodge all of which were lovely and very reasonably priced. We'll definitely be going back!

'Camping bliss'

We stayed at coastal during their first season, normally we camp in our vintage airstream but as we only had a few days we chose the BBQ lodge an amazing little hut with a flushing loo, camping stove and a fully functioning BBQ in the middle of the hut.

We are a family of 4 and my girls 9 and 13 really loved the little house on the prairie style bunks?

The campsite has a real feel of community with the kitchen set up for all you need if you decide to travel light. Campers are encouraged to share any surplus food by putting a little sticker on any food still in date for others to use if they need to.

Tanya and her amazing family are always happy to help you in any way they can, and are tireless in their enthusiasm for all things vintage and also host craft sessions to occupy campers on those non beach days.

This year the showers have been totally rebuilt and look amazing, so although the site is very conscious of its carbon foot print, the new build is more efficient and very modern inside while in keeping with the rustic style on the outside.

We can't wait to visit again this year, a real gem in a prime location for some of the best surfing beaches  in cornwall.

And having visited many campsites in this area, we think coastal ticks all the boxes on location, facilities and access ( something quite high on our priorities when towing our trailer)

Costal Valley

Me and my wife had our wedding reception here as soon as we saw the site we new it was for us. We really loved the bohemian feel and the natural beauty that surrounds the site. Tanya and Andy were really attentive hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them. We stayed the night in the safari tent which was amazingly comfortable and just so different to anywhere else we have ever stayed I would wholeheartedly recommend coastal valley to anyone

A hidden Cornish Gem

Coastal Valley is a beautiful place to stay. They have 5* reviews on other sites and excellent reviews on their own Web site. These convinced us to stay there and we have never been disappointed. We've returned a couple of times now and the latest toilet and shower blocks are simply fabulous! The site is in a hidden valley very close to Newquay and within walking distance of the fantastic Watergate Bay. The site is within a stunning natural setting, yet within easy access of the main routes for trips out around Cornwall. All the facilities are very clean and well thought out. We especially appreciated the showers and the communal kitchen. We were camping but we're shown around the glamping accommodation, a huge and well appointed Safari tent, a camping pod and a BBQ lodge.  All of them absolutely cracking places to stay and something we plan to do in the near future. Once on site is easy to forget the hustle & bustle, truly a hidden gem.

Definite Return

An amazing stay at coastal valley for a relaxing holiday. Something so different to any other site. Tanya and Andy were both very helpful and always smiling. The site has everything you need and more set in a tranquil valley with a farm shop stocked with local fresh foods, a new shower and toilet block that looks like no expense was spared. Along with camping they have a beautiful safari tent, bbq lodge and a wooden pod. When we return in the summer we are going to try the glamping side. The location is perfect to get around places. I just love this site.

Amazing Stay 5*

5* Great site, lovely surroundings, peaceful and friendly. Big warm welcome from Tanya and Andy the campsite openers. Had a wonderful time at Coastal Valley, with craft activities and quirky food nights. New toilets/showers are modern. Communal kitchen too. We will definitely be back!

Excellent site, ran by lovely people

This campsite is truly special. I cannot recommend this campsite enough for any families, friends or couples wanting a peaceful retreat in a beautiful setting under the care of some truly delightful hosts. A huge perk of this site is that its in a peaceful valley and even on the windiest days its not that windy. It has the most amazing river flowing to the side of it, perfect for washing wetsuits, beach equipment and its just nice to fall asleep to the sound of it. We won't be considering anywhere else on or next visit to Newquay. Thanks guys.
