A gloriously tiny back-to-basics campsite between Newquay and Padstow in North Cornwall

Cornwall is one of our favourite camping destinations. And one of yours. And one of everyone else’s, it seems. The sun, the sand, the surf, the countryside and clotted cream... the delights of England’s westernmost county tempt millions of us to visit every year. But wouldn’t it be nice to rewind the years to a time when the campsites weren’t quite so crowded? We haven’t got a time machine but we can let you in on a little secret; some quiet campsites still exist in Cornwall – and one of them is Higher Pendeen Camping.

This rare Cornish gem is a tucked-away, farm-based campsite within walking distance of a beach. It allows campfires and hosts just a handful of campers at a time. It’s a back-to-basics kind of place, where motorhomes and caravans are not allowed, and cars are parked outside of the camping field. There are just five pitches here which can be hired for campers’ own tents or for one of the site’s bell tents. The smart money is on the latter. Reasonably priced, with the extra cost more than made-up for in convenience; bell tents are pitched for you and have beds included, saving you time on arrival and space in the car.

Although bell tent glamping is part of the attraction of this site, it’s not aiming to offer luxury stays. Facilities are basic, the ground is uneven and the sights, sounds and smells of the farm are part of its charm. The Sterling family have been here for four generations and the campsite has been built with their sustainable farming ethos in mind. This means a composting toilet, eco-friendly loo rolls, recycling points and limited light and noise pollution. It also means starry nights, abundant wildlife and a quiet, relaxing atmosphere where you can forget about the crowds at Cornwall’s tourist hotspots.

Having said that, with a location midway between Newquay and Padstow – it’s not too far to visit either but we reckon most campers will be content with the more local charms. It’s a 10-minute walk across the farm to Mawgan Porth, where golden sands are backed by rockpools. You can join the South West Coast Path here and the village has places to eat and drink including some pretty swish options. Book a meal out if you fancy it but don’t miss the chance to have the catch of the day delivered to camp by one of site owner Liz’s contacts in the local fishing fleet. Cook it on your campfire and enjoy with some of the farm’s own produce for a true taste of Cornwall.

Details

Facilities

One compost toilet and one “see the stars” open-air shower. The drinking water tap doubles as the place to collect water for washing up. Campfires are allowed, fire pits are provided and logs are available to buy on site. Fresh farm produce is also available in season.

Suitable For

Campers, glampers, families, couples – yes. Caravans, motorhomes, campervans, dogs – no.

Nearby

The campsite is located within a 25-acre farm. Mown pathways allow campers to explore (when cows are not in the fields) and it’s a 10-minute walk across the farm to Mawgan Porth, and the nearest beach. There’s a recommended surf school, King Surf (01637 860091) on the shore and you can join the South West Coast Path to walk towards well-known Newquay (five miles) or Padstow (10 miles on the road, longer on the coastal path); a handy bus means you don’t have to walk back. If you head in the direction of Padstow you pass the stunning coastal rock formations, the Bedruthan Steps. Despite being a rustic, back-to-basics site it is thoroughly modern in someways and has a handy app-based guestbook with more suggestions. Plus, owners Liz and Mike have a wealth of knowledge on the local area and are happy to offer tips. There’s also plenty more information on things to do in the area on the Visit Cornwall website.

Food & Drink

Campers are spoilt for choice when it comes to local produce as fresh eggs and vegetables from the farm are on offer when in season and Liz is happy to organise deliveries from the local fishermen, butchers, bakers and honeymakers. There is a small grocery store in Mawgan Porth, a 10-minute walk, from site and there are supermarkets in Newquay and Padstow. For a smoothie by the beach try Beach Box Cafe (01208 895576), for lunch or dinner there’s The Kitchen By The Beach (01637 860594) and for a pub atmosphere try The Merrymoor Inn (01637 860258) or head inland to St Mawgan and The Falcon Inn (01637 860225). For a sea view and a fancy dinner try The Scarlet (01637 861800) or head to Padstow where there are plenty of options including, of course, Rick Stein’s famous seafood restaurant (01841 532700).

Fantastic site with perfect location and facilities

We stayed at Higher Pendeen for 4 nights mid September and had the most wonderful time! The location of the camp is perfect, just a 10 min stroll to Mawgan Porth which has a number of local shops and restaurants and stunning beach with surf hire/school. There are some great walks along the costal path within easy reach of the campsite too. We stayed in a bell tent which was fabulous. Much more spacious than expected and we had use of a fire pit and picnic bench which was lovely to sit out in the evenings watching the sun set. Liz kept the camp spotlessly clean and it felt very safe and COVID secure with all the measures that were in place. Hot shower was a nice addition too. It was nice to hear the local wildlife, horses, goats and bats going about their business at night too. Liz was an excellent host, very accommodating and helpful. My only regret was not staying here longer and if I’d have known how much we would enjoy our time here I would have booked extra nights. Thanks again for a wonderful time 💙

Small but perfect campsite in great location

What a fabulous campsite! Located 15min walk over the fields to the incredible beach at Mawgan Porth this campsite was perfect. Our large bell tent even had solar lights and proper beds😀. The solar shower was excellent and we loved cooking our tea over the fire. The host was fantastic… helpful and knowledgeable she introduced us to her goats and horses and even had some home grown produce. There was plenty of space for the kids to play cricket and run around. We didn’t want to leave!

Fantastic host

Host really friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. Excellent eco site with very clean composting toilets. Just 5 pitches (although there are other sites nearby) and 10 minutes walk from the beach with a selection of restaurants.

A wonderful back to basics site.

This site really is as described. It’s just five pitches, which is great if you don’t like the crowds. The pitches are marked out so no neighbours encroaching on your space. Clean composting toilets and outdoor showers and genuinely a short walk to the beach. People with xl tents would find the pitches a bit small but they are plenty big enough for a 5/6 berth tent and they all have a great separate fire/cooking area. Well worth a return visit.

The campsite has a relaxed and friendly feel

This is a tiny camping/glamping site just off the narrow road leading to Mawgan Porth, a coastal village that is a small but lively holiday spot with a surfing/rockpooling sandy beach. The campsite has a relaxed and friendly feel, with spacious pitches surrounding a small wild meadow. It has no reception/office but the owner Liz comes to greet you and explain ins and outs. Liz is full of local knowledge and she also grows veg which is on offer to the guests. There's lots to do in the area, and the blog on the campsite's website has very helpful suggestions for lesser known places! We stayed with our 7 year old son in a bell tent, which had lots of room and comfortable beds, and it felt like a very good base for exploring.

Gorgeous, friendly & great location!

Liz was so friendly from start to finish, she can’t do enough for her guests! Really cute little site on a smallholding, 10 mins walk from the beach & hustle but far enough away to feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. Tiny site, beautifully kept, with ponies grazing & space for kids to play, and Liz wandering around with her basket of fresh veg to bulk up your bbq. The bell tents are huge inside with comfy beds, fairy lights galore, funky upcycled tyre furniture dotted about. Love it, will definitely be back ☺️

Relaxing stay, made better by good facilities and a brilliant host.

Me and my friend spent two nights in a two man tent on one of the small grass pitches. The location of the campsite is very good, not too far of a walk to the beach. The general atmosphere on the campsite is lovely, both Liz and the fellow campers were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. Would definitely stay again and recommend to anyway seeking an adventurous Cornwall get away. Another nice touch was the eco friendly and environment conscious aspects of the site, from wild flower areas to the compost loo and access to recycling. Overall faultless experience.

Lovely hill-top spot within walking distance of Magwan Porth

This is a lovely little camping spot with great facilities and a very friendly host. You can reach Magwan Porth in around 10 mins on foot by walking through the adjoining fields, which is great for surfing and cliff top walks. The campsite is amongst a small farm so it was nice waking up to horses in the next field. The pitches are nicely spaced out and there are only five in total, which means you're not sharing the facilities with loads of other campers and have space to breathe. The bell tents are spacious, with double beds and basic seating, plus a fire pit per pitch. I would recommend packing as if you were properly camping - ie. bring extra seating, lights, soft furnishings and cooking equipment.

A quiet place for camping

We had a lovely time at Higher Pendeen Camping. Liz is a very helpful host. She met us at our late arrival and showed us around the camping site. The site is very well organized, clean and has all facilities for us. It has a very nice view: a lovely place to see both sunset and sunrise. It also has a lovely walk path on the side of the farm to the beach. If you are looking for a quiet place to be close to nature, this place is for you!
