Enchanting camping amongst trees and a boulder field, just 15 minutes drive from the coast

The enchanting mix of young trees, open glades, granite boulders and, in places, sea views, has long made Retallack Woodlands a popular choice for outdoor wedding celebrations in Cornwall. This year, however, the Robertson family have opened their gates to campers, instead. It's just another way you can come here and make life-long memories, enjoying all the fun and relaxation of the site without having to shop for any wedding gifts.

Set around 50 acres of native woods, Retallack Woodlands is home to just 20 spacious pitches, most in a nicely mown meadow space but with the option to explore a little further and squirrel yourself away in smaller spots. After all, no two campers are the same so why should two pitches be? Choose between grassy spots under sunny skies, surrounded by the moss-spotted boulders and yellow gorse, or pitches sheltered away within the woods. The hardest part of your experience won’t be pitching your tent but choosing which area to camp in.

All pitches are within 50 yards of loo and shower facilities. And you can reconvene with your fellow campers around the communal campfire pit to debate who has the best view of the sunset. The fire adds to the community feel of Retallack, giving you the opportunity to get to know the people you spotted at the washing up station that morning and share camping tips while the kids run amok and find new friends. If you’d rather stick with your camping group, there are also individual campfires which you can use by your tents. For maximum relaxation, meanwhile, you can also book a session with a fully qualified masseuse, who visits the site to offer spiritual healing sessions in the wooded surrounds.

When it comes to leaving camp, you're in the prime position for exploring Cornwall. It’s a 15-minute drive to the seaside town of Falmouth, home to a clutch of beaches, as well as all the shops, overlooked by 15th-century Pendennis Castle, and it's a 10-minute drive in the opposite direction to the Helford river, a popular spot for sailing and sea kayaking (or enjoying a pint in a waterside pub). For those wanting to stay closer to home, there are a multitude of circular walks right on your doorstep, one or two taking in the local village shop if you need to stock up on a few extra supplies for dinner.

Woodland pitch - Boulder Field
From the first moment we arrived we felt invited and welcomed. The camp is beautiful and how camping should be, no lines of tents or packed in next to other. The camp had a wild/ free feel at the same time easy to follow paths and nice facilities. The camp atmosphere was calm and friendly no strict rules or inspections. Really nice family and the manger of the site was warm and welcoming. Definitely will be coming back for another stay.

Grass Pitch - Boulder Field
The owner very friendly and helpful. Shower and toilet very well maintained and clean. Pitches are a little sloped but you can choose wherever you like to pitch depending if you wish to be sociable or have your own space. Would definately stay again! Was perfect for us.

Grass Pitch - Boulder Field
Without doubt the best campsite from our week away, our time here was delightful, gutted to only spend two nights before moving on elsewhere. Ample facilities, friendly and helpful owners, good location to local coves and beaches. A relaxing and spiritual time was had. Will be revisiting in the future!

Grass Pitch - Boulder Field
This campsite is so beautiful and unique, well kitted out and lots of secluded spots (even in gale force winds) to choose from between the stunning selection of trees and woodland. Great warm electric shower, compost toilet, fire pit and charge points. Great location for exploring around Helford and the Lizard. It has a really special, eco friendly and personal feel and lovely owners. Thank you!

Woodland pitch - Boulder Field
What a lovely piece of land. There is a mixture of woodland pitches and open field. The shower is well constructed and hot too. They have really wisely put in enough electric and water points. The view was lovely and there was a nice big fire circle too. I’d very happily recommend it as all the booking procedure was straightforward and well explained. There were instructions to find the site as Sat Nav takes you to the wrong farm. It was handy for Penryn and Falmouth. We had a great weekend there and would definitely go back. Many thanks!

From the host
Retallack Woodlands is a family run business that primarily hosts weddings and other events including yoga retreats, however this year we have decided to differentiate into offering camping during the summer months. Retallack is located in a secret corner of Cornwall which is the idyllic backdrop to create life-long memories. We encourage people to immerse themselves and reconnect with nature in its 10 acres of enchanting native woodland. We offer a choice from a variety of 15 spacious pitches; some under the stars, others in the woods, as well as a couple with a heavenly sea view. Retallack Woodlands is located in a prime position - with only a 15 minute drive to the seaside town of Falmouth or a 10 minute drive in the opposite direction to the Helford river, campers can enjoy a fun packed day out. Or alternatively If you do not wish to drive, there are a multitude of circular walks right on your doorstep and in walking distance of the village shop if you need to stock up on a few supplies. We offer a larger communal fire pit which provides the opportunity to meet new people with the option of having a modest fire by your tent. If you wish to relax further we are able to offer a fully qualified masseuse as well as spiritual healing session (all by appointment only). Facilities consist of a compost loo, a communal washing up station, a shower and 2 electrical points at either end for all campers to enjoy.
Nearby attractions

Try a visit to the gorgeous subtropical gardens at Glendurgan (01326 252020) and Trebah garden (013262 52200), both around 15 minutes away. Or, if you fancy something a little more adventurous, check out BF Adventure (01326 340912), Kernow Wake Park (07817 662962) or Flambards theme park, all within a 15-minute drive. For animal lovers, there is also the Seal Sanctuary and the Flicka Donkey Sanctuary (01326 373601) just down the road. For sunny beach days, Maenporth beach is 15 minutes by car, its location sheltering you from any of the cooler breezes blowing in off the Atlantic and making it a good spot for swimming. The different beaches of Falmouth – Gyllyngvase Beach, the cove-like Swanpool Beach and Castle Beach – are within easy reach, too, overlooked by Pendennis Castle, while Durgan Beach, at the mouth of the Helford River is a great spot for rock pooling.

Food and drink

There are a couple of cafés and pubs within walking distance, including Potager Garden, Slice of Cornwall and The Trengilly Wartha Inn. Potager Garden (01326 341258) is just over a five-minute walk from Retallack, serving homemade cakes, fresh lunches and creative vegetarian options in their converted greenhouse. Slice of Cornwall (01326 341163) is just under a ten-minute walk away, hopefully that’s still enough of a journey to work up an appetite because once you see the menu full of cakes, smoothie bowls, waffles and savoury bites you’ll be struggling to order just one option. The Trengilly Wartha Inn (01326 340332) is a longer walk away taking around 40 minutes (or a 10-minute drive), the relaxed and casual spot serves locally sourced food alongside regular events like weekly quiz nights and live music out on their garden terrace. Head in to Falmouth for all the major supermarkets.
