Comfy canvas camping in bell tent-like abodes on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula

This small-scale Cornwall glamping site is a real testament to what can be created when a few like-minded people come together. The site is a marriage of the renowned Glampotel team – a glamping ‘brand’ that has several bell tent locations around the UK – and local farm owners Sarah and Andrew who have live in Higher Bochym Hill Farm and also run a small caravan site in one of their meadows. The experienced partnership seems the perfect recipe for a well-organised glamping set-up but with a real, personal touch and the friendliness of local hosts.

Comprising a collection of spacious bell tents, raised on wooden platforms to provide a flat, dry base, the site is a glamping retreat with the luxuries the name suggests. The creamy canvas of the bell tents and their location in a small secluded meadow behind the farmhouse provide those essential outdoor elements, while an en-suite bathroom, handmade bespoke wooden furniture and a well-equipped kitchenette adds that luxury ‘hotel’ streak.

Each bell tent is accompanied by an outdoor deck, where you can sit and survey the view as you fire up the barbie and, though located near the established caravan site, the glampotel glade is conveniently sheltered away from any noise. In fact, often the nearest neighbours are a few cows in the next-door field. The farm produces it’s own free-range eggs and stock Primrose Herd Award winning bacon from traditionally reared rare breed pigs (book yourself a breakfast hamper for the best of the treats). And, once you’re well fuelled up for the day ahead, you can take to the footpaths or hop in the car to explore the best of the Lizard Peninsula.

Head to the coast where Mullion Cove is a short drive away; from here you can go on a kayaking trip with Lizard Adventure (07845 204040) or walk over the cliffs to Poldhu via the Marconi Centre, where the first transatlantic message was sent over 100 years ago in 1901.

Food & Drink

There's a BBQ on the front deck of each tent and BBQ and breakfast hampers can be ordered (delivered to your tent at the requested time). For the best fish and chips in the area it’s worth the 10-minute drive to The Smugglers in Lizard village (01326 290763).

great atmosphere, great interior, really interestingly done very much enjoyed the see-through roof on the bathroom. Very well done, delicious food in the shop at the garden. really nice fires and set in a beautiful field set in a great part of cornwall lots of things to do nearby. very nicely welcomed by Andy and Sarah very helpful and the tent survived the massive storm, only downside was the internal fire was very smokey if it rained.
