Cracking Cornish camping with views over Falmouth Bay

Two miles west of the buzzing Cornish town of Falmouth you'll find the small village of Budock Water, home to the Trelowarren Arms pub ('The Trelly' to locals) and Trewen Farm, a working farm and spot for some chilled-out camping.

Family-run, the farm has been passed down through generations and now offers campers an open and spacious camping field with fabulous views over Falmouth Bay. All the essentials are covered with spotless shower and toilet facilities, water and some electrical hook-ups. Camping pods are also available for those who prefer their camping hassle-free (no tent to take down and pack away, hurrah!).

Guests can see the farm in action by taking a nature trail through the farmland down to the woods and streams that lie below. For a longer walk, pack your suncream and towel and head for popular Swanpool beach which is less than an hour on foot (or five minutes by car). This stretch of sand and shingle is a family favourite with water-sports, kayak hire, and a decent outdoor cafe.

Falmouth itself is a thriving town dripping in maritime heritage, and with an active art scene making it one of Cornwall's cultural hubs. Sleek pleasure cruisers sit side-by-side with traditional working fishing boats in what is the world's third deepest natural harbour (after Rio and Sydney). There are heaps of activities celebrating life by the sea, from museums and art exhibitions, to beach combing , water-sports and festivals. The fresh catches from the fishing fleet supply a vast array of quality cafes and restaurants with excellent fish and seafood.

Overlooking the town is Pendennis Castle, one of the finest fortresses built by Henry VIII to defend the country, which has seen action in many conflicts since. A walk around the castle will transport you back to Tudor times and through to the two World Wars. Descending through the castle a set of tunnels bring you out to the big guns and magazine of Half Moon Battery – time it right and you'll get to hear the noon day gun being fired.

Cornwall is, of course, all about the great outdoors, so whether it's kicking back and enjoying the beach life, taking a walk along the many coastal paths or getting sporty on the water, Trewen Farm Campsite is a stellar starting point.
