The Meadows

UK England South West England Cornwall

The Meadows, Pentewan, St. Austell, Cornwall PL26 6DL

Nestled in the heart of the Pentewan Valley, where the St Austell River yields to the boundless blue of the Atlantic, The Meadows campsite is the traditional Cornish campsite of dreams – traditional, albeit with a little touch of luxury thrown in.

With its stunning seascapes and unparalleled access to the Pentewan Trail, The Meadows' enviable location means this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is yours to savour. It's also just for adults (sorry kids). Friendly owners John and Lynn are the very embodiment of courtesy, welcoming tenters, glampers and caravanners with smiles and open arms.

Although just down the road from the holiday park-opolis that is Pentewan Sands, The Meadows is a million miles away in terms of atmosphere. Natural and fun are the keywords here. For the canvas contingent, John and Lynn have set aside their spacious, sheltered, sunny meadow for a few dozen lucky tents. A handful of caravanners are seen to with hook-ups, while campervans can park up right beside the stream that leads to the Little Winnick River. Fancy travelling light? Extra special secluded meadow pitches are also being cultivated for next season, so watch this space.

For those in need of a little pampering, your cordial keepers are only too happy to introduce you to Lottie and Mabel. No, they aren't the buxom wenches from the local fisherman's inn, but rather two cosy, vintage caravans – perfect for that romantic retreat. Decked out with chic interiors, bunting and ship's sail-sunscreen, these charming, fully-equipped originals bring the beach hut to you. Recline back on the stripey deck chairs as you enjoy a bit of al fresco dining courtesy of the smokey joe barbie (cleaned and prepped daily, no less) on the spacious, screened deck area (Lottie) or private garden & seating area (Mabel).

It's the little touches that really make your stay at The Meadows. The book-swap boasts walking, campervan cookbooks, and explorer maps. The small onsite shop sells home-reared eggs, Roskillys ice cream, local milk, plus seasonal treats such as wild garlic pesto (made by John). John's breakfast baguettes are the stuff of local legend while during high season, the "Blue Vintage" van visits every Thursday teatime, serving freshly made crêpes.

While John and Lynn do their utmost to ensure your stay is as fuss-free as possible, the white shoes and linen trouser brigade should probably keep moving! Joking aside, your eco-conscious hosts are eager to emphasise the wild beauty of the site. Leaving the far end of the meadow to Mother Nature, the place is positively abuzz with wildlife. The large bird-feeding station is a magnet for all manner of feathered friends, while the adjacent stream is teeming with tiny brown trout, watched over by ravenous kingfishers. As the sun descends over Mevagissey Bay, hooting owls can be heard in the surrounding trees as the resident hedgehog does the rounds at night, scavenging stale buns and anything else that takes his fancy. If you're really lucky, you may even see the odd deer at dawn.

This is also very much a dog-friendly site. There's a 'canine drinking station' for your parched pooches and some tremendous walks to be had with easy access to some great beaches – Hemmick is a particular favourite of camp dog, Harvey.

So with campers of all persuasions catered to and easy access to Cornwall's best beaches and attractions, The Meadows really is all things to all men... and women... and dogs.

Perfect meadow

Jul 16, 2017 by Belle_LiamG

We stayed at The Meadows for 4 weekday nights. It was our first proper experience of camping and we loved it! Prior to arriving, communications with campsite was excellent. Lynn was always so quick and prompt to respond to any queries we had. I don't know how she did it especially as it is just the two of them manning the campsite (not forgetting Harvey head of security!) When we arrived we were welcomed and shown around to choose our plot. We were also told about the cocktails and pizza which would be visiting that evening, as well as the Cornish Maid for a scrummy breakfast. We pitched up in the meadow and our plot was the perfect distance from the car and the meadow allowed for a bit of privacy in the mornings and evenings. It was also great as we got the sun throughout the day. The facilities were always clean and warm and having a free charging unit for devices was really handy as well as a place to store ice blocks. The option to also have a fire pit made our camping trip feel really wild! John set up and cleared away the fire pit. He provided us with lots of wood which meant we could enjoy our fire for a long time. It was a beautiful campsite, only downside was the main road, coming from London however, it was not what we would call a main road! This was soon quiet in the evenings, hardly noticeable when you're out exploring most days! I don't know how John, Lynn and Harvey do it, they have worked so hard to make the campsite beautiful and a really enjoyable experience. We will be visiting again and have recommend it to others. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

A piece of paradise...

I've never left a review in my life but I will for this place. John & Lynn have this sorted. We spent 6 nights in the proper camping fields surrounded by woodland and wild flowers. With its manicured walkways to your own plot, nightly visits from boutique food trucks serving up delicious local produce, the evening delivery of ready to go firepits, and all round excellent vibes, you can't go past this set up. The bathrooms were always immaculate, and the hosts open their onsite shop twice a day for phone charging, milk purchasing, and general local advice. Lynn pointed us to an off the beaten track private beach, John guided us to local golf courses. All round excellence and will be back again as soon as we can. Thanks Meadows.

Perfect & relaxed, whats more to want?

Jul 19, 2016 by claireiom

After much searching for the perfect campsite, in the perfect location for a two week stay I stumbled across The Meadows, I spent so long researching the site first as the last thing you want is to end up stuck somewhere awful for two weeks! We were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived the friendliness of the site and relaxed nature greeted you. So much space, not only between pitches but generally all over the site which is something that you struggle to find in lots of other sites. The Meadows came into its own though when the first of the pop up cocktail bars arrived, out came John with the beach deck chairs on the grass in front of the decking and slowly everyone started making their way down for a cocktail and sitting around people started chatting. What a social able site! We totally loved it, through the two weeks we chatted to more people on site than we ever have done throughout all our years camping. Not in your face though, general social able on the pop up bar nights and down on the decking for the free wifi just made this place seem so great. We did make friends with a few and had a few nights around their fire pit. Not a rowdy site, even when a large group of younger guys turned up they stuck to the rules (not that there is many of them!) John and Lynn are lovely, can't do enough for you, always around in the background, approachable and helpful and Harvey the camp security is just great. We pitched on foxglove, it is on the road side of the campsite but after a day we really didn't notice the noise from the road, it quietens down from around 9.30pm and maybe started back up again about 6ish but the noise of the birds drowns it out! The bonus of this side of the site is that it gets the sun later in the evening and we were able to sit out enjoying it longer than the other side of the site. It also meant that we didn't get the first of the morning sun so the tent was not unbearable. There are 3 ladies showers, all with toilets and sinks and two male showers with the same, also there are separate toilets. As with most sites there can be a slight queue first thing in the morning but if you timed it right we only had to wait once over our two weeks. No issues with cleanliness either, every time I bumped into Lynn she seemed to be in there cleaning! Overall we had an amazing time here, even with iffy Cornwall weather for the majority of our first week we loved it. So easy to get out and about from here to all parts of Cornwall, lots of walks straight from the campsite (perfect for early morning dog walks along the river) and such a dog friendly site. We will most definitely return! Thank you Lynn, John and Harvey.

Fantastic!

We have just spent a fantastic week here. You soon forget the road noise and the facilities are fantastic. The owners are really friendly and conscientious keeping everything spic and span whilst retaining a very chilled out vibe to the site. The "pop up" bars and catering outlets are a great idea and very good value for money and with the seating areas people soon get chatting and socialising and during our week we met some lovely people. The site is well positioned for getting to all the great spots Cornwall has to offer and we will definitely be going back!

Lovely meadow

May 29, 2016 by beckyatpudsham

We had a lovely 3 nights here just before Bank Holiday.  We weren't quite sure at first how we would cope with the noisy road but the gorgeous meadow with the flowers and the bird song round about won us over very quickly.  We were very touched by how kind and considerate the owners were on 3 occasions.  The place is very well run and the washing and toilet facilities are amazing. We would definitely come back.

what a little gem!

Aug 6, 2015 by A Brice

We had a lovely week staying here in july in our tent.  the site was beautiful, loved the bird feeding stations in the trees alongside the little brook.  the toilets and wet rooms were the best i've ever used [in 46 years camping] and were always clean. we really enjoyed the cocktail bar and pizza wagon - both fair priced and good.  Lynn and John are lovely people, very friendly and helpful - they have made a wonderful site.  Going "adult only" was a brave decision, but  gives them the edge on other sites in the area. Being able to hire fire pits and BBQ's is a great idea - it was so lovely to see everyone sitting round fires in the evening. The atmosphere is really relaxed and quiet. Road noise - what is the problem here people? Yes, during the day there is a lot of traffic - it is the main St Austell to Mevagissey road - but in the evening it quietens down and at night isn't noticeable at all.  We all enjoyed our holiday here and will return - our 20 year old daughter loved it and wants to return with friends.

Keep up the good work folks - you've a real gem here.

Hosts that care

Jul 31, 2015 by VW T5

The meadows, is as all the reviews say a wonderful place, especially for those in tents.  The outlook over the meadow is beautiful with the back drop of trees around.  The owners really do care in being helpful with local information and the toilets and showers are immaculate.  Having a T5 we had a pitch with hook up and yes there is road noise which you get use to,  this is minor compared to the location, friendliness and a truly lovely place.

Wow!

Jun 28, 2015 by Bex

In a very last minute change of plans we contacted The Meadows the day before we were due to arrive to find out if they had a pitch available.  Lynn said yes there was a pitch available but it wasn't their most desirable.  In need of a place to stay we booked it anyway and with some trepidation as to what we were letting ourselves in for travelled down on the Saturday.  When we arrived we found out why the pitch ("Woody") wasn't their most desirable - right across the road from the toilet block, right outside reception, right beside the chicken coop and one of the first to lose the evening sun.  Don't let this put you off though, when we go back, yes I said "when", we'll be asking for Woody!  We pitched so that we were overlooking the chicken coop and the tree and as a result were entertained for the whole week we there!  The chickens are a delight to watch, and though we were warned that they could be noisy in the mornings they never disturbed us.  And the birds that visit the tree which Lynn and John keep so well stocked with fat balls, nuts and seeds!  There was an endless stream of small birds of too many kinds to mention, there was a friendly robin that alighted on our guylines several times every day, a pair of pheasants were also regular visitors and it was with great delight that we saw a jay and of course the pitch's name sake, the woodpecker.  There was also a family of squirrels that were a source of great amusement on their frequent visits as they chased each other around the tree and the woods behind the chicken coop.  Being so close to Reception meant that we didn't have to move far to make use of the site's WIFI facility which was useful for planning days out.  And proximity to the conveniences was of course very convenient when an overindulgence in the Cornish cider woke us at 3am lol.  Other reviews have mentioned the proximity to the road and the resulting noise from this, and yes, there is road noise.  But it does quieten down as bed time approaches and to be honest we were so absorbed in enjoying the antics of the chickens and local wildlife that it never bothered us in the slightest. The facilities were always spotless, the showers were always warm regardless of how busy the washrooms were and there was never a shortage of toilet paper or hand soap even at the busy times.  Lynn and John were very friendly hosts, always ready with a cheery greeting and a wealth of local knowledge!  All in all this is a fantastic site, well thought out and the visits from the fish and chip van, the pizza van and the cocktail van add those little of touches of luxury that make all the difference on a camping holiday.  We loved our visit there and next time we hope our stay will be longer!

Wonderful site

Jun 19, 2015 by Lizzie Weaver

We stayed for 4 nights over the May bank holiday and couldn't have been more pleased with this site, it was exactly what we were looking for. Just enough people to create a nice atmosphere but plenty of privacy and space. Great value for money considering we stayed over a bank holiday. Great location too - a tip - before heading off miles to find a well known beach, try cycling 10 minutes down the road to Pentewan. It's beautiful and far surpasses St Ives! The sites facilities are spotless and we never had to queue.

All in all The Meadows is possibly my favourite UK camp site I have visited to date.

Beautiful site with a great atmosphere.

Jun 2, 2015 by BekkiC

We have just had a lovely 3 night stay in the 'proper camping' meadow and it was absolutely beautiful.

John and Lynn are really helpful and create a lovely, friendly atmosphere.

Everything is smart and clean and as novice campers, any fears we might have had about cold, grubby showers were completely unfounded.

would highly recommend sticking around to catch the cocktail van as sitting in the late afternoon sun, sipping a mojito and watching the BBQ (a beautiful Smokey Joe, hired at a very reasonable price) warm up is one of my favourite holiday memories.

The camp-site is excellently positioned for walking and local attractions and I wish we had stayed longer so that we could have visited more.

Our pitch was pretty central, at the back end of the site and we weren't bothered by the road at all.  I imagine that if we had camped further away then we woudln't have even noticed it.

I sincerely hope to return before the season is over.

Thank you so much for such a lovely stay.

We just had 2 weeks at the meadows and enjoyed every day of it. The meadows is a picturesque little site that is well run and very well maintained. With breakfast baguettes in the morning and firepits and bbq's delivered to your tent what more could you ask ? The facilities are very clean and from what i could see cleaned regularly throughout the day. Being an adult only site was a big plus for us as it was nice and quiet. We will deffinately be back. Highly recommended

Great Campsite and hosts

Sep 8, 2014 by dassa

Had a lovely time during our stay, we stayed here for over a week in the end after initially only planning to stop over for a night or two.  We loved it, very nice to find a campsite that actively welcomes dogs and your are free to pitch where you wish to. The facilities are excellent and a pleasure to use. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming, they put a lot of effort into the campsite and keeping it  clean and well presented.

The current owners have done a lot to make the campsite what it is today and go out of their way to make your stay very pleasant.  It's situated in a good location for exploring the local area and beyond.   With great local walking routes especially for dogs who like woodland walks.  The local Pub called the Polgooth Inn became our local during our stay again very friendly owners and good food, that welcome dogs inside the main pub eating area with a separate restaurant for diners who wish to get away from dog areas.

Are planning to go back again, highly recommend!

Lovely site shame about traffic noise

Sep 4, 2014 by Greeneyes83

Enjoyed our stay at the adult only campsite, it is small but had everything we needed, very clean toilets, and shower block, only fault would be from the noise on the road next to the site which made the stay not so peaceful as we were woken by the constant cars.

A great base, a very relaxed and friendly site.

Aug 10, 2014 by MrsGeorgiaT

Such a relaxing and friendly site.  We really loved being able to choose our pitch, which we picked just on the edge of the meadow, so we had the benefit of a neatly mown space but the outlook of wild flowers & grasses, and a few nicely spaced out tents.  Great option to hire ready-stoked fire pits (we didn't, and regretted it!).  The owners are really helpful with advice for things to do and see. The shower block is excellent, very clean, spacious and plentiful hot water.  And a free hairdryer!  Good cycling from the site - great food at the Polgooth Inn, a flat(ish) ride of about 10-15 mins, on the Pentawan off-road trail and quiet country lanes.  Really lovely.

The Best Of Cornwall

Aug 7, 2014 by Seaside

The Meadows is a fantastic camp site for those looking for something different: NO site Entertainment. NO screaming kids. NO homogenous plots & pitches. Lots of lovely dogs. Great hardworking hosts. Daily egg laying chickens. Gorgeous location. Like minded people. Fantastic showers and washing facilities. And a little bit of what camping is really about. The only real downside of The Meadows is that you can't stay forever!

Pretty Cool Campsite!

Jul 14, 2014 by AndBen

This campsite does have pretty much everything going for it; adults only (as a teacher with no children this is heavenly), dog-friendly, great hosts, lovely and clean facilities, pretty setting and a great base for exploring. John and Lynn seem to be very busy and hard working but always have time to help, we had a lovely breakfast baguette on our first morning with a steaming pot of tea on their pretty decking area and they showed us to our secluded spot at the back of the meadow with a couple of wheelbarrows to cart our kit from the car. The toilets and showers are brilliant - clean and modern and there's plenty of bins for rubbish and recycling. We were given a map of the area with extra information marked on it and were told, again when we had forgotten in our holiday 'daze', where to go for supplies etc. On our first evening, there was an uber cool VW campervan selling cocktails so we made full use of that! Another quirky van was also there in the afternoon selling teas, coffees and cakes, and we were told that Tuesday night is pizza night, shame we missed that.

Nearby, Lobbs farm shop, next to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, is a fantastic shop with lots of luxury foods and deli items and there is a garage just down the road for a quick shop of basic supplies. The Lost Gardens are an absolute must, by the way, be prepared to do some unsteady and steep walking but they are some of the best gardens we have ever visited. You can walk along a lovely woodland path to the seaside village of Pentewan where there is a great pub, The Ship Inn, with beer gardens next to the harbour. Ten minutes drive away is Mevagissey, we walked along the coastal path which starts in the center of the village to the small but gorgeous beach of Postreath. It was so secluded there were only 3 other people there, but as there are hundreds of steep steps to get to it we could see why.

All in all a really great site and fully recommended. The only thing that was a downside for us, and this is purely personal, is that the road next to the campsite is a main road and very busy - we like to get away from traffic when we camp as it is part of the whole experience. If this doesn't bother you then you'd find it hard to stay at a much better campsite than The Meadows.

Soon to be a not so hidden gem!

Jun 13, 2014 by BeckyLaura&Graciedoodle

Where to start....we have just returned from a fabulous week staying at The Meadows and it is our pleasure to write this review...

Having a 8 month bonkers labradoodle we were eager to make sure that if we went camping, we would not just be 'tolerated' by a dog friendly site! On paper, The Meadows seemed to good to be true....in reality, it surpassed any expectations we may have had!

Close to St Austell, with many conveniences, we were given a pack with a list of dog friendly beaches and local eateries....none of which disappointed! We explored locally and travelled afar - we would definitely recommend the Polgooth Inn, Perranporth (the beach and the Watering Hole Pub) and Par beach.

We were blessed with good weather, lovely camping neighbours (one of which took our crazy doodle for a run - we think she was seriously disappointed about not going home with them!), and we treated ourselves to John's amazing breakfast baguettes on a couple of occasions.

John and Lynn, thank you so much for having us, your site is beautiful, your facilities spotless and our holiday was pretty much perfect (that would be me getting sunburnt that dampened that!)

We will be returning and telling everyone we know about you! And we will book far enough in advance as we are certain you will continue to be a favourite amongst campers!

Becky, Laura and Graciedoodle xx

Just perfect

Sep 15, 2013 by Anne

Beautiful camping in the meadow, very relaxed, owls hooting and yes, we did see deer. We like wild camping but with one child learning to eat solids, the other potty training and a young dog learning about being around others we needed a few more facilities without enduring the full "Holiday Park" horror of precision plots and minimarts. This fit the bill perfectly. John and Lynn are lovely and work very hard to keep things clean where it matters and let the rest of the site be natural. The breakfast baguettes are truly epic, and it is great to be able to cook your own gourmet meals over a fire by your tent. So many beautiful places close by, a week wasn't enough. Great value too! Highly recommended.
