A stunning, family-friendly campsite on the stunning, family-friendly Isle of Wight

Poised in the southeast of the aptly nicknamed ‘garden isle’, Ninham Country Holidays is a campsite with a secluded rural feel, yet one that remains a short distance from one of the nicest resorts on the seafront. With its functional new town and quaint, thatched old town, Shanklin has been a popular part of the Isle of Wight since tourism began here. Where its cluster of houses merge into the woodland beyond, anyone with a good eye will spot the potential for fantastic campsites to be found. And, no sooner have you hopped, skipped and jumped into the green, inland countryside, then Ninham appears in the grassy midst, a family-run camping park ideal for exploring the island.

Although admittedly a large site, Ninham Country Holidays thankfully has none of the commercial atmosphere you might expect. This is a family-owned and family-focused site based around the original farm buildings. The site's 230 pitches are also divided across two separate fields, split by a wooded valley and surrounded by mature deciduous that provide shelter and shade on warmer days. This secluded, countryside feel is only accentuated by the long, private drive that takes campers down to the site, cutting them off from any road noise whilst also acting as a speedy cycle path back to the outside world.

Campers have a choice between two fields: ‘Orchard’, the larger of the two with ultra-modern eco-facilities that do clever things with solar and rainwater-harvesting technologies (and which happen to include an extremely handy family room with specialist showers and a baby bath), and ‘Willow Brook’, with its own separate facilities that – although more basic – are functional and well-kept. In both camping areas, pitches are kept mostly to the edges of the field, providing ample room in the centre and ensuring campers aren’t crammed together in the 18 acres of space. Those still wanting more from their pitch can even ask for the ‘XL’ option so motor homes, awnings and cars can all easily be accommodated in one spot.

If the weather turns, wander back to the main reception block and you’ll find a welcoming indoor games room with a pool table, air hockey and more, along with free Wi-Fi and space to relax with a coffee or ice cream, served onsite. Outside, Ninham also boasts a sports area and a heated swimming pool – ideal if the weather is a little too nippy to enjoy the sea at nearby Shanklin Beach.

The best way to explore the island is on two wheels. Surrounded by mature woodland and rolling countryside, there is a fabulous network of footpaths and cycle routes that lead directly from the campsite across Ninham Farm's sprawling 120 acres. Those who head south can link up with the famous Shanklin Chine, a twisting pathway with steps leading down into a mossy gorge, enlivened by the sound of a cascading waterfall. Meanwhile, by car, the rest of the island is open to experience, its plethora of attractions and summer festivals providing all with an entertaining itinerary, whatever your taste.

3 - Standard Grass Tent Pitch
The site delivers everything promised on the website! Facilities are clean and plentiful and the pool is a great space. We loved the layout of the grounds and found them to be well maintained. Unfortunately we stayed during a heavy storm and our pitch was allocated in a space where we got the full force of the 40mph winds. We didn't realise the camp wasn't fully booked so didn't ask to move, but will next time. We will definitely come back.

Lovely campsite. The pitches are of a good size and spread out well. The toilets and showers are well maintained and very clean. Kids’ play facilities are good too.

Standard Grass Tent Pitch - efa8
Great site
Great site and pitch with good location and short walks to shops, clean toilets and swimming pool etc. Staff were friendly and helpful. Perfect and only minor complaints are the length of time the showers stay on for being far too short when head all soapy and the check out time of 10am makes packing up and leaving very stressful kinda ruining your last day and night as had to pack up most the evening before. Other sites I've stayed at are later in the day and a couple of extra hours would be appreciated. Would stay again though.

One of the best camping sites!
Great lovely new and clean facilities. Friendly staff and guests. Wonderful location. I even got a jump start by a member of staff when I had car trouble. Kids loved it as very family friendly. Highly recommend. Worth the money.

From the host
Ninham Country Holidays is a 4 star graded site set over 12 acres of level, within 120 acres of the larger, Ninham Farm. There are approx. 135 pitches spacious and landscaped pitches catering for types of unit, on the 'Orchard' with only the Summer holidays seeing them being filled anywhere near occupancy - so book out of high season and you may just enjoy the site (almost ) all to yourself :) It is a perfect spot for those who want to enjoy a scenic and peaceful space among nature. When you do manage to drag yourself away from Ninham, it’s just a short ride to the safe & sandy beaches of Shanklin, and Sandown Bay. The 'Orchard' camping area offers spacious, level, and landscaped pitches catering for types of unit, divided by hedging and mature specimen trees. It benefits from modern shower facilities, with renewable technologies such as solar water heating and rainwater harvested flushing toilets.
Nearby attractions

Head into the seaside resort of Shanklin  with its thatched old town at the southern end overlooking the golden sands of the beach.

Sandown bays beaches are perfect for young families with gentle, safe & sandy beaches

The Shanklin Chine is a popular attraction, a luscious green ravine with a walkway down the gorge-side to a handful of attractions at the bottom, including caged birds, chipmunks and a Victorian brine bath. Back at the top of the cliff, Rylstone Gardens are also a great place to escape the crowds.

Beyond Shanklin, Ventnor, in the south, is a fishing village turned fashionable health spa and boasts beautiful gothic buildings that cling to the slope above the sands. It is a fantastic walk from here to Steephill Cove.

Food and drink

A coffee and ice cream hut is open during the Summer School holidays high season offering freshly ground 'Island Roasted' coffee, dairy ice cream and drinks.

There is no shop on site, as there is a choice of 3 supermarkets, all within a 5-10 minutes' cycle away on safe bridleways or if necessary a 5 minute drive

Our favourite farm shop  Farmer Jacks  is  nearby,  in Arreton, and has a great butchery and selection of the finer things.

The Pointer Inn, also in Newchurch, is one of the oldest pubs around and still deserves its local fame, as does The Taverners  in Godshill, a real country bolt hole.

In nearby Shanklin, the place to head is down to the waterside where The Fisherman's Cottage is tucked away. Uncomplicated and unpretentious, this thatched pub is a great spot to enjoy the daytime sunshine.
