Almost wild camping in rural Sussex, with campfires, good footpaths and a pub within 15 minutes' walk

There's not much to see at Little Thakeham Farm for most of the year. That's if you notice it at all. At the end of a long concrete track, the field, dotted with oaks and elms, is a wonderfully hidden spot, perfectly situated a mile from the edge of the South Downs. And, to be honest, come summer there's not a vast amount that changes. There are no showers, no big wash blocks and certainly no WiFi. But when the dairy herd is moved into a different field and campers are welcomed here instead, the place transforms into a bona fide campsite and a wonderful one at that.

A mile from Storrington and just over 10 miles from the South Coast, Little Thakeham Farm is best for those looking for the back-to-basics camping experience and good walking opportunities. There are portable toilets, drinking water taps and logs are sold for campfires but otherwise things are fairly laid back and fun comes from revelling in the open space provided. Children will love making friends and exploring the shady borders of the campsite, while parents prep a barbecue spread from local farm shops, like The Village Larder, three miles away.

While Worthing, the south coast and attractions like Arundel Castle are all within 10 miles or so, its the countryside on the doorstep that's really the main draw. A stroll through a few fields behind the farm and you’ll end up on Strawberry Lane, a delightful path running through a long, narrow copse, or walk north into Thakeham village, where there's a Normal church and a 16th-century pub with occasional live music. The South Downs Way, meanwhile, is just over a mile away, as is the National Trust's Warren Hill park and woodland – a popular picnicking spot. The result is that you needn't go far to have a good time here. Indeed, you might just sit and enjoy the atmosphere of the meadow without really going anywhere at all.

Drinking water taps. Portable-style toilets. Pitch where you like – there's plenty of space and campers are allowed to park car by their pitch. Barbecues and campfires are permitted but must be raised off the grass (logs are sold on site).

Worthing beach is also a 20-minute drive away if you want to hit the coast and take out your paddle-boards. RSPB Pulborough Brooks nature reserve is a 10-minute drive away, where you catch sight of a peregrine falcon among other fantastic species. Family run Truffles Bakery in Storrington do fantastic doughnuts – the Oreo flavour is particularly indulgent, and The Old Forge (01903 743402), also in Storrington, is particularly special if you want to treat yourself, serving posh nosh with reasonable prices and catering for most dietary requirements.

Great for no crowds!

The field we camped on was beautiful and we were 1 of just 4 tents so it was a lovely and peaceful spot. It's very basic, just 1 portaloo and running water, which suited us fine and made the whole weekend very 'off-grid'. In a beautiful location with a great pub and villages nearby and also well suited for the south coast. The farmer did pop by and was lovely but we didn't receive any instructions prior to arrival. Signposting to the site is poor so most of us were unsure on arrival as so whether we were in the right place or how to get logs etc. We solved it but a board on arrival or email beforehand would provide reassurance.

Lovely and quiet weekend away

I'd really recommend this campsite if you want something lowkey, clean, and the experience of wild camping - there were only 3 other tents in the field the weekend we were there. The only thing that would have made this better was a shower - but there was a tap that could be used if you filled up a solar camping shower! The landlord came and said hi and gave us great recommendations for the area, we bought firewood and had no issues with the portaloo - clean and non-smelling as far as they go! BEAUTIFUL campsite and surrounding area.

Surrounded by nature

Such a lovely weekend at Little Thakeham Farm. Long meadow and the bare essentials made for a peaceful serene experience. Very friendly landowner who gave us hints and tips about the local area 😀

Peaceful, beautiful site, helpful landlord

Very peaceful large meadow, a few lovely large oaks provided shade during our very hot and sunny weekend. There is a very clean, odorless portable toilet, and a potable water tap, all you need and all we wanted for almost wild camping. The overall feel is a clean beautiful peaceful place. Lovely helpful landlord. Close to excellent pub, the White Lion, and the South Downs. Half an hours drive from a nice beach Climping that the landlord recommended. Had a great time!
