Nearby

Kings Barn is on the northern edge of the villages of Bramber and Steyning, where a number of good walking and cycling routes intercept. The long distance Monarch's Way and the better-known South Downs Way both pass just south of the campsite, crossed by the popular Downs Link cycle way, which runs between Guildford and Shoreham-by-Sea and takes in the very lane the campsite is situated on. It's around half an hour by bike to Shoreham from the campsite and 90% of the route is traffic-free. The villages also provide ample pubs and places to stock up on food (including a well-known sweet shop in Steyning if you want to upgrade your marshmallows; The Little Sweet Shop; 01903 879775) and Bramber is also home to a ruined Norman castle on a little hill overlooking the River Ardur. Only one slim bit of surviving tower remains – a wall of about 14 metres high – but it provides a glimpse of how imposing the castle must have been and the spot offers great views over the downs and Sussex countryside. If you want a more fulsome castle, Medieval Arundel (01903 882173) is a 30-minute drive away. For days idling on the campsite when you don't wish to use the car, there's good walking beside the river (a footpath follows it for miles on both sides) and, if you've brought your own stand-up paddleboard or kayak, you're welcome to launch near the campsite.

Food & Drink

Between Steyning and Bramber there's a decent number of pubs to choose from. Our pick of the bunch, though, is The Star (01903 813078), with two delightful gardens and a stream down the middle, and the larger and more modern White Horse (01903 814084). Beyond Steyning, The Fountain (01403 710219), 10 minutes' drive away in Ashurst, is renowned both for its friendly atmosphere, good ales and low-beamed, flagstone-floor interiors but also for its many claims to fame, including being the local of actor Sir Laurence Olivier and its use as the setting for Paul McCartney's 'Wonderful Christmastime' music video. For lighter bites, Victoria Sponge (01903 814517), The Steyning Tea Rooms (01903 810103) and the Cobblestone Tea House (01903 366171) are all in Steyning, while those picking up food for the campfire should try the good farm shops in Cowfold (Jeremy's Two; 01403 865523; 20 minutes north) and Petworth (Hungry Guest; 01798 342803; 35 minutes west and near the National Trust's Petworth House and Gardens).

Fantastic Weekend

My wife and 2 children went away for 2 nights to Kings Barn Camping at the beginning of September. We had a wonderful time! Our hosts were friendly and helpful, the camp site was clean, and safe. The children loved exploring and the whole experience was simply bliss! Would recommend to anyone.

A fab escape!

Even though we only live in Brighton, not far away. Glamping at Kings Barn felt like an escape. Set in gorgeous countryside. A lovely campsite setting. Our tent was really well set up. Lovely atmosphere, cosy furnishings, yummy treats and the bed was really comfortable and snug. We loved walking and exploring the surrounding area. It was just a 20minute walk to Steyning for dinner. In the morning we enjoyed the campfire for cooking breakfast. The toilets and showers were very clean and the water was hot! We’d love to camp again with a group of friends.

Basically a hotel in disguise!

We've been to a few off-grid campsites and Kings Barn Camping is simply one of the best! From the location (we didn't have a car, but cycled 30 mins through an easy and picturesque Downs Link from Shoreham-By-Sea), to the communication from Jazmin both before and on site, to the 5-star amenities which includes compost loos and LEGIT hot showers (I literally felt like I was in a luxury hotel when I had a shower there, it was so clean but also completely in tune with nature, and the water temperature and pressure was on point!). The pitches were neat and well cared for, with individual fire pits. Although the weather wasn't perfect, it was an absolutely wonderful stay, and I haven't even mentioned the marshmallow kit yet. High recommend to anyone who'd like to embrace the beautiful South Downs. Thank you Jazmin!

Fantastic spaced out site

Arrived at kings barn (used what3words 👍) Ample parking, well instructed place. Pitches are brilliant size and spaced nicely. Fire pits and bbq racks on each pit, logs kindling and even marshmallow kits can be bought on site. Great back to basics style camping . Composting toilets are good and the gas fired showers are an absolutely brilliant addition ! Down by the stream seats have been placed for relaxing. Highly recommend this one…Definitely go again and hopefully the site will be open again next season for more visits

Getting There

When you arrive at Bramber roundabout on the Steyning Bypass, take the exit on the road called Castle Lane. Follow this narrow road and continue straight ahead along Roman Road until the end. Turn right on to Kings Barn Lane. Follow this around to the left and you will see the sign for Kings Barn Camping. Follow the signs down the lane for 600 yards or so until you see the campsite on the right. If you are using the What Three Words app, the campsite is located at: plausible.expansion.segregate.

The nearest train station is in Shoreham-by-Sea. From there a taxi (available from the rank outside the station) takes around 10 minutes or you can catch the number two or number 60 bus to Steyning. Get off at the bus station called The Castle (by Bramber Castle), which is the nearest stop. From there it's about a 20-minute walk to the campsite. If you take the train to Brighton it's the same bus route (and, therefore, the same bus numbers). Or you can get the train to Shoreham and bring your bike, then follow the Downs Link cycle way (flat, firm but off-road, and almost entirely traffic-free) all the way to the campsite (five miles). The cycle route passes the campsite gate.
