Seven shepherd’s huts sit beneath the trees of a small copse

Time was, the chalky slopes of south-east England were home to more roaming flocks of sheep than people. High on the hillside of this luscious landscape, with a crook and a sheepdog, a shepherd would perch on the step of his four-wheeled homestead watching the world go by. While time may have marched on in the world of farming, the hills of rural Surrey have retained their timeless beauty and a countryside idyll still awaits the would-be nomad. As if dragged from the neighbouring meadow, where newly born lambs still bleat, seven shepherd’s huts sit beneath the trees of a small copse. The campsite could not be more aptly named: The Green Escape.

Set in six acres of National Trust woodland, The Green Escape is an eco-friendly glamping getaway that offers complete seclusion despite being just 30 miles from central London. It operates on an exclusive hire basis and is ideal for an extended family gathering or quirky wilderness parties. The seven huts can sleep up to 20 people, with four little huts containing a double and optional single bed, and three big huts containing a double bed and bunk beds. Emerging from your shepherds hut onto a carpet of bluebells, you wander through the woods to a remarkable straw building, home to a kitchen and eating area. Stocked with a wood-burning stove, gas hobs and all the utensils you’ll need, this is a wonderful space for groups to get together and an extra place to hide if the weather isn’t good enough for lounging in a hammock.

There is no electricity at this Surrey glampsite, but that's sort of the point. Here you can switch off your phone, forget the outside world and enjoy building dens in the trees or toasting marshmallows around the campfire. The peaceful surroundings, enlivened by wildlife and a patchwork of natural colours, slow down your everyday tempo to an enjoyably laid-back pace. If you really want something different, The Green Escape also plays host to optional activities that guests can request as a part of their stay, venturing into the woods on bushcraft courses, art classes or willow weaving workshops.

If you’d prefer to strike out on your own, then a stroll up the road (and trek up the hill) will bring you to Leith Hill Tower, the second highest point in south east England. From its top, you’re rewarded with staggering views across the landscape, while the homemade cakes within serve to sweeten the deal! From this panoramic point, any budding cyclist will be teased out when they see the quiet country lanes on offer. The incredible surroundings are dotted with endless charming villages, inevitable stopping points whether you’re pedalling around or simply cruising in the car. Within these rolling hills, the shepherd's huts remain hidden. A private slice of the Surrey Hills, that can be our little secret.

A large straw bale building is fully kitted out with kitchen utensils, crockery, a gas hob and wood burner. There are 2 hot showers in a converted shepherds hut and 2 compost toilets on site. Huts are kitted out with beds, a folding table, chairs and a log burning stove. Guests have exclusive use of 6 acres of the National Trust woodland to make merry in, fire pits for toasting marshmallows, BBQ for outdoor cooking and hammocks for lounging. There are also a variety of workshops on offer with local tutors including, art, yoga, foraging, guided mountain biking and bushcraft.

A Piece of Heaven on Earth

I planned a family weekend away for my husbands 40th birthday.  We went two weeks ago and we are still talking about it now and keep saying how much we wish we were still there.  This is the most amazing place.  If you love being outside, talking, laughing, cooking and relaxing - this is absolutely the place for you.  Although you have a lovely warm Sheperd's Hut to go to at any time we found we only went there to sleep because if was simply fantastic lying in a hammock swinging gently listening to the sounds of birds and children playing or preparing food in the very well equipped kitchen.  I couldn't recommend this place enough - our group of 18 gave it 5 stars. It's a small piece of heaven on a hectic earth. If you haven't already - book soon I promise - you wouldn't regret it. The owners are wonderful too, they can't do enough for you.  Oh, and when the owners tell you not to bring too much stuff because you wont need it - take note as they have thought of almost everything.

Wonderfull trip away

We used the green escape last weekend for a hen party. When we turned up the place was breathtaking with all the bluebells out in the forest. The owners couldn't have done more for us throughout our stay and the place was so lovely and well cared for, they have put a lot of thought into everything there. We had a fantastic weekend and everyone's first thought when they arrived was when they could go back. This is a great venue for all kinds of adventures I would imagine.

February Haven

We came for my 30th birthday party, and it was a really perfect weekend. Having a February birthday means potentially anything; from deep snow to warm spring. We got a bit of a weather mixture, but the set up is as ready for the winter time, as for summer. When the room was full of people, we would sometimes have to open a window it we were so warm! A somewhat muddy field was negotiated on Friday night with help from our lovely hosts, wheelbarrowing our weekend supplies to the woods. Once we were there we had the run of our very own beautiful woodland. We played 'Capture the flag' games in the spring sunshine, hid from the rain with indoor yoga and had a ukulele workshop on Saturday evening that got everyone involved. I will never forget the sound of 20 people playing Achey Breaky heart... The candlelit welcome on Friday night, set the tone for bringing new people together. Everyone left firm friends in no small part to the beautiful location. I am terrible at organising things, but everything was really easy. I can thoroughly recommend the Green Escape for a reasonably priced getaway. Thanks guys for a memorable birthday. We will be back!

Christmas at The Green Escape

Our Christmas at The Green Escape was so special and unique and I doubt we could ever better it!  15 of us spent Christmas and Boxing Day at the huts and absolutely loved it.  A few in our group were a little worried that it might not feel festive enough, but how wrong they were.  What's not festive about a log burner on the go constantly, drinks flowing, plenty of food (and yes we did manage a proper Christmas dinner with turkey and all the trimmings!) and great friends around you in an idyllic location!  One of our group suggested that the owners of The Green Escape must surely have stayed in the huts themselves to properly experience the environment and realise what was required to ensure all needs were met, and I have to agree there.  We really did feel lucky to have experienced such a wonderful time there, and have since recommended it to many friends.  We will definitely be returning!

What a way to see in the New Year!

11 of us saw in the New Year at the Green Escapes. Di & Barry did a great job of getting everything set up for us, plenty of wood for the stoves and lots of candles. The setting is ideal, so peaceful and quiet, yet only a short walk to the Parrot - a great pub in Forest Green.
The shepherd huts were very comfortable and even in winter they were warm enough. Sitting round the firepit outside got everyone relaxed, followed by a candlelit dinner in the warmth of the main building - the Bales. It got to the stage that we had to open the windows at 2am to let some of the heat out.

We may well come back in the summer to have a barbecue and spend more time outside in the beautiful surroundings.

A fantastic weekend retreat

I've just returned from a weekend at the Green Escape with a group of 14 over 28-30 November. We all loved GE - it was the perfect place to spend time with friends and enjoy great food and drink, songs by the piano and games around the roaring fire. Di and Barry were incredibly helpful and accommodating, even to the extent of assisting with the logistics of the Hog Roast we arranged for Saturday evening. The site is a delight, perfect for a range of groups - friends, families, corporate etc - and everyone in our group has expressed interest in returning in the future.

A Magical Place

I brought a group of friends here on 25th/ 26th October for my other half's surprise 40th birthday celebration.  This place is truly magical, you feel like you're in your own little world away from all the hustle and bustle.  The camp is well catered for with everything you could need in the kitchen and in the individual huts.  Suki, Diane and Barry were helpful, accommodating and friendly. The breakfast baskets of local produce were lovely as were the pizzas from the wood fired pizza van we arranged. The highlight was having everyone together sitting round the firepit in the evening with a few beers and toasting marshmallows. I highly recommend the Green Escape and we're hoping to return next year and bring the kids next time as it is perfect for little ones too.  Thanks for a brilliant stay.

The Green Escapes is brilliant

I organised for a group of 15 of us to stay at The Green Escapes last Friday (17.10.14). We were on a work away day and this was the perfect venue to relax. We absolutely love this luxury campsite. We arrived in the dark to find the bales candlelit, & decorated with fairy lights. There were wood burners, inside/outside seating, hammocks, a fire pit, a piano and quaint little huts where everyone had a bed and warm/clean bedding. The Green Escapes team are lovely and welcoming and have clearly put a lot of time into the site to make it so special. Thank you again!

Autumn weekend

I took a group of 10 people to the Green Escape last weekend. We all had a fantastic time enjoying the first class facilities and stunning location. I can with my one year old and we were happy to use their high chair and travel cot. The kitchen is remarkably well stocked so you need to take very little with you. The showers are always hot which some people ay have worried about with it being off grid. The candles and solar lights just add to the magic of the venue.

Firstly, the service leading up to and beyond my booking was amazing - always on call/email to give advice, answer my questions and ensure I had everything I needed to plan a Secret Camping Surprise weekend - Well done Diana, Suki and Barry!

Secondly, we arrived late on Friday night in torrential rain! (after working hours - 9pm) to find the main dining cabin filled with candles, a birthday balloon, a roaring stove and prosecco for our arrival - bliss! Diana and Barry were there to welcome us and ensure we all knew where our cabins were and that we had everything we needed, lending us torches etc to find our way.

Thirdly, they popped back in the morning (thankfully now bathed in sunshine!) to show us the showers, and give us a feel for the place and make sure we knew how to light the Swedish candles and ask if we needed anything.

Lastly, the whole stay was amazing, the cabins are secluded, warm, very comfy and inviting. We loved the large kitchen cabin and the outside seating around the fire. We had some kids with us too, and they loved the swings and running about the woodland surrounding the cabins.

The whole place is very well equipped with all the kitchen items you could think you need, a BBQ, warm showers and plenty of room for all of us (we filled the place - 20 people)

Overall, a fantastic stay and fantastic hosts! We will ALL be back very soon - couldn't fault it.

A Wonderful Place

We had a fantastic weekend at the Green Escape.  The best part, is that it is just your group and you can relax and enjoy the space without worrying about disturbing other people.  With great friends and a load of children amusing themselves and running free it is the perfect weekend away.  The shepherd huts are really cosy and comfortable and you don't want to get out of bed!  The straw bale building is a great space for everyone to get together with loads of room for a big group.  It is lovely to be outside all the time but still have the comfort of the huts and a hot shower.  We will definitely be back.  Thank you for making us all feel so welcome.

We had a wonderful stay at The Green Escape! The shepherd huts are so cosy and comfortable, and the communal space is perfect for groups to get together for a meal.

I can't wait to get back to the peace and quiet of the copse, where the stresses of real life drift away and time stands still...

Thanks to all at The Green Escape for the warm welcome and fun times. See you all soon! :)

Oasis of serenity

Spent a warm and restful night in the cosy shepherds huts, with atmospheric log burning stove to end an afternoon and evening enjoying the fun and company of friends/family in what can only be described as an oasis of serenity! The location is easy to get to, parking a breeze and surroundings beautiful. There is an abundance of outdoor space to rest and play in (the hammock time out a must), BBQ area and enticing fireside seating area for the chiller nights. The straw bale building and its contents (all the basics provided) rounded off our memorable stay with a huge group breakfast. Big thank you to all at The Green Escape for making it such a wonderful stay...already planning the return trip.

A little paradise

We had the pleasure to stay at The Green Escape for a week end with friends and kids and I didn't know you could find such a paradise that close to London. We all had such a great time, everything is so well thought to feel comfortable, from the way it's set up to all the little details, very convivial common area and privacy of huts. Being able to leave the kids explore and enjoy themselves without worrying about cars is fantastic. A very good way of spending time together with simple activities like preparing food, making a wood fire, going for a walk and discover local businesses and beautiful landscapes. And ending up the evening with a nice bottle of wine with the little ones sleeping a few meters away after their exhausting fun day. MAGICAL!!

Can't wait to visit again

Fantastic Family escape

We stayed for a night with a group of friends for a birthday party. With three young children the venue is fantastic; no cars to worry about and plenty of space and forest for them to explore. The accommodation is beautiful. The shepherd huts are lovely, so comfortable and with plenty of space for five in the family hut. The straw bale building was a great space with everything you could need. We will definitely be returning!
