An established touring park with a spacious camping meadow, within striking distance of Chipping Norton

Think of the Cotswolds and you may well think of Chipping Norton. Although it’s really a gateway town to the hills that spread away to the south and west. It’s classic Cotswold stone appearance and its association with well-healed political and media personalities has earned it a reputation as a well-to-do hotspot. And, happily, it tends to live up to the hype, especially if you like food, with 17th-century inns like the Blue Boar to enjoy or Medieval pubs like the Chequers tucked away on Spring Street. Plus, of course, the odd punny place, like The Chipping Norton Tea Set.

Just a mile and a half from town, Cotswold Hills Country Park is within hopping distance of the action and, just off the A361, incredibly well connected to the rest of the Cotswolds AONB too. Opposite a storage unit and fronted by caravans it doesn’t necessarily strike you as ‘Cool Camping’ at first glance, but the sign at the entrance – ‘Free range eggs for sale’ – is the giveaway that, at its heart, this is still a classic, independent campsite with a warm heart and bags of space for tent campers.

The campsite is really a tale of two halfs, as a well-versed football commentator might say. The first half is made up of a popular touring site, with hard-standings and electrical hook-ups for motorhomes and a superb modern washblock with heating throughout, indoor washing up sinks and spacious facilities. The second half is a vast camping meadow for tenters. There’s room for about 60-odd pitches all told, with room to spare and plenty of space for kids to run around and make friends. Tent campers benefit from the same modern washblock as the touring site – the benefit of staying at a campsite like this is that, although you’re enjoying proper tent camping, you still get the guiltily good facilities of an established touring park.

Beyond the local town the Cotswolds proper unfurl. There’s excellent walking to be had, including the long-distance Shakespeare’s Way, which takes you from the middle of Chipping Norton down to the pretty village of Slaford and then along the valley to the neolithic Rollright Stones. Or you can venture by car to National Trust properties and pretty towns and villages, like Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water, all well within a half-hour drive of the campsite and all claiming that they, too, are the real Cotswolds hotspot, with their own fancy pubs and tea shops to their name and maybe even a famous politician or two.

Heated shower and toilet block with separate ladies and gents facilities. Disabled access washrooms. Indoor washing up room. Laundry facilities. WiFi access. General waste and recycling point. Chemical disposal point and motorhome point. Campfires are not permitted.

Suitable For

Everyone! Tents, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, dogs, kids, groups...

The Cotswolds are really on your doorstep here and you can enjoy it in all forms. If you want that classic Cotswold town, walk from the campsite in to Chipping Norton, an up-market town with classic Cotswolds stone buildings, excellent pubs and delis and a good range of shops to nose around in. It's stereotypical Cotswolds living (and, in some cases, with prices to match!). If you're here for the walking and the hills, though, head to Great Rollright and join the long distance footpath, Shakespeare's Way to take in some of the best of the scenery, including the Rollright Stones – a group of limestone boulder monuments and a stone circle dating back to the neolithic times. Here for heritage and stately homes? Try the National Trust's Chastleton House (01608 674981; seven miles) or dog-friendly Batsford Arboretum and Garden Centre (01386 701441; 11 miles), taking in the pretty village of Morton-on-the-Marsh along the way. Other hot spots like Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water area also within a 30 minute drive.

Food & Drink

It's a mile and a half into Chipping Norton, which has no fewer than five good country pubs along with a host of other cafés, delis and foodie delights. The Blue Boar (02034 370891) is on the closes end of the High Street to the campsite and also happens to be one of the best spots in the town. It's been a coaching inn since 1683, and still has plenty of original features on show, including beautiful oak beams and classic Cotswold stone walls. It's hearty pub food with a modern, gastro twist and it still has a good pub atmosphere with live music and quizzes. For more general stocking up, there's a CoOp and Sainsbury's in town, plus an Aldi on the edge of the town nearest the campsite.

Lovely campsite

Lovely campsite with clean shower blocks and toilets. Large open field with a lot of choice for set up. Close to Chipping Norton village and easy drive to lots of other beautiful villages. Would definitely recommend.

Clean and well located

Stayed over the long weekend and the site was lovely. Clean shower blocks and toilet facilities, and spacious site with plenty of space between pitches. Well located, 30 minute walk into Chipping Norton but with Waitrose and Aldi closer to walk to. Nice walking opportunities in the area.

Great stay

Stayed here in our tent with our 2 dogs for 3 nights. In a great location and the toilet/shower/washup block was very clean. Very covid friendly with hand sanitiser stations dotted around. Signs still up to remind people to keep distance and restrictions on numbers in shared areas, which is great. Great atmosphere all round. Only small reservations was that we were pitched up against the road, which we didn't realise till bed time, but it was very noisy with cars zooming past all night. Nothing some ear plugs didn't solve! Thanks for a great stay.

Lovely site, dangerously overcrowded.

The site is well-kept with excellent facilities, it’s in a fantastic location for exploring the Cotswolds and within an easy distance of a number of charming towns and villages, each with lovely shops and pubs. We were greeted by very friendly staff who were very informative. We arrived on Thursday afternoon and were directed to the rally field which offered plenty of space and we were able to pitch ourselves a comfortable distance from other campers. The problems began on Friday afternoon where the site began to fill rapidly to the point of over-crowding. There were simply too many campers allowed onto the site which resulted in people pitching within one/two meters of each other, including the middle of the field leaving barely enough room to drive out. As people were using fire pits (including within awnings!) this posed a serious fire risk. As a result we left before breakfast the following morning. This is a real pity as in all other respects the site was excellent.

Clean, well kept & accommodating,

We camped here with tents, grass pitches, well maintained camp field, plenty of space. Toilet / shower blocks kept clean and warm. Washroom & drinking water available. Next to a road but didn't notice much noise from traffic. Supermarket, garage and a few attractions close by, in walking distance. The only downside personally for me is not the site itself but the surroundings as it's surrounded by main roads (although with paths) so not great for going out walking / biking with small children. Overall a lovely place though and I would stay again.

First timers experience

As camping novices we weren’t sure what to expect for our two night (Saturday and Sunday) stay. A friendly welcome upon arrival was lovely but we were surprised to see how busy the campsite was, struggling a bit as to where to pitch our tent (we arrived on a Saturday and actually it was so empty by Sunday afternoon it clearly was just a busy day!). Facilities were good including extra portaloos as well as the main wash block. The showers are a bit annoying as they time out very quickly so you have to keep pressing the button. Loved having the radio on in the washroom. Definitely got good use of the 20p hairdryer - lasted ages; just remember your 20p coins! The site was kept very clean all the time. The location was central to The Cotswolds but the nearby road was super noisy through the night! It was frustrating some other campers were really loud although they did stick to the 11pm curfew. As we have two little children they went to bed before the curfew but it was a struggle to drop off for them. Nothing the site can do about this but wanted to mention for any other first timer campers. Overall a good first time stay.

Basic, but super clean friendly site

Check in super easy and straight forward, lovely friendly staff. Plenty of space and choice to pitch tents, ( family of 8 with 4 tents) toilet and shower block very clean at all times, hairdryer usage 20p coins, could have done with sockets in there as usually charge phone/use straighteners while doing hair etc but not a major problem. Overall a very pleasant stay. Would not hesitate to use this site again.

Perfect getaway

Had a phenomenal weekend, full of laughs and adventure. The on site facilities surpassed expectations, and the nearby walking locations were gorgeous! We had buckets of space and no trouble at all setting up - an easy holiday all round, and I recommend it if you’re thinking of getting away for the weekend.

Lovely quiet couple of nights

Friendly staff, easy & quick check in, felt very secure with number coded barriers in & out, clean & tidy toilets & shower blocks, and lovely grounds. Lots of picturesque towns nearby & we enjoyed some nice meals out. We would definitely recommend, and have no hesitation in staying there again. Keep up the Good jobs guys.

Fantastic weekend

The staff were really friendly, the campsite was well maintained. The shower block and toilets were basic but clean and heated! Easy walk to town and lots of good dog friendly pubs and nice local walks! We will definitely be back!

Very helpful staff and a nice park

I stayed here in June 2021 with a group of 16 friends and four dogs. The staff were really helpful and made sure that our 7 booked pitches (with a mixture of tents and campervans) were all placed together. The pitches were really spacious. They rang us in advance of our trip to check our requirements again. The facilities were great and very nicely kept and all Covid processes were carefully followed. There was a nice outlook from the back of the campsite and good walking, pretty villages and handy shops within walking distance. I would definitely stay there again and would recommend. Thank you.

Great Campsite, great area, great facilities

We spent a lovely weekend at the campsite as an extended family group, there was plenty of room on the field for us to pitch up together with plenty of space between other campers. The facilities were really clean, I saw someone regularly checking the shower/toilet block and cleaning if needed. There were facilities to wash cloths, dishes and dispose of waste. Its a lovely area, there were shops a few minutes down the road where we were able to pick up fresh food for cooking, saving us having to pack any food for the trip. There is a road the runs along side the grass pitch field, it can be a little noisy and if you pitch next to the road you may be shaken by passing cars at night. We pitched away from the road and it didn't interrupt our sleep though.

Nice and friendly

Very friendly staff there, nice and clean campsite with clean facilities. The tent pitches are right near a road so you do get woken by the very occasional car but it’s a very quiet side road.

Great stay, good location and clean facilities

When we arrived on the Thursday the field was very quiet, with only a handful of tents there. It did get busier on the Friday and Saturday but was never crowded. The facilities were clean, and most of the time were pretty empty so it felt very safe. The main thing we liked about the camp site was the location - its nearby to lots of nice pubs (The Wild Rabbit in Kingham, The Blue Boar in Chipping Norton) and farm shops (Daylesford) so it was a great base to explore from. The road noise is quite loud at night time, and I think we probably set up on the wrong side of the field so we were right by it, but it wont stop us visiting again as we had a great trip!

Nice but noisy

There was a tractor working into the night in neighbouring fields and a very noisy road close by, as well as a road running right next to the site which was used through the night and just the other side of a small hedge row! There were also four huge groups (it is a big field) who were very noisy until late. Otherwise, nice location and newish clean facilities.

We arrived on friday to find that the field was already fully booked but somehow through the evening and night people were still arriving and scrambling for space, we had no room either side of our car and tent. We had a lovely shower on the friday evening but saturday the water was freezing cold all day and sunday the water ran out completely, meaning the showers were closed, and then the toilets and drinking water followed suit. We had to drive to local facilities to use the bathroom. We were told we are using the water too fast, I'm sure this wouldnt have happened if guidelines were met and the park wasnt over booked. I understand small business such as this have struggled over lockdown but really peoples safety and wellbeing should have been top priority. I think the lesson may have been learnt after the weekend they had. I was surprised by how many people had been allowed to book in such a small space during a pandemic which I think they had forgotten was still ongoing, there were no signs to wear masks in the facilities, you had a sign to say 5 people max in the WC but there were constantly over 7 people at a time, none wearing masks. The road is extremely loud through the night, our tent would blow with wind when a car drove past in the (almost sounding as if it was coming into the tent). I must say the best thing about the site was the thai food van that pitched up and served food all day, also it's a very nice walk to chipping Norton town centre.

Response from Cotswold Hills Country Park

Hi Lucy,

Please except our deepest apology for the situation surrounding May bank holiday. We have recently taken on a new external booking system which unfortunately did not correctly link with our internal system and this led to the site being over booked. This has never happened before and we are incredibly sorry for the inconvenience caused, both to you and others that were affected. We have since taken steps to ensure all booking systems are correctly linked to ensure this never happens again. Whilst many people were still able to enjoy their time with us, we are aware that some were not and this greatly saddens us. Please be assured we will continue to make every effort to ensure we offer an enjoyable and pleasurable stay for everyone.

Kind regards,
CH Team

Mixed feelings

On the day when we arrived, the campsite was very busy, so busy that they ran out of water for the toilets and showers. They had to close them for 40 minutes in order to replenish their water supply. Not sure how often the facilities were cleaned. If you are on the rally field, make sure you get a spot by the field at the top because otherwise you will be bothered by the noise of traffic which is relentless on such a small road. Otherwise, the camp site is good value for money and we'll located id you want to visit some nice spots such as Stratford upon Avon, Blenheim palace, Oxford....

Good site friendly staff

Stay for 4 nights was 1 issue but staff sorted very quickly and where very helpful and had customer best interest would definitely go back again good site and facility’s great freindly staff
