Off-grid camping in the High Weald of Kent with campfires, acres of space and a farm shop within strolling distance

In the rolling scenery of the High Weald AONB in Kent, this gently sloping camping meadow is aptly named. Cloudless nights, of course, can’t always be guaranteed but, when they arrive, the stars and the dark skies here are dazzling. Bedded down in the long grass of this former hay meadow, you can throw another log on the campfire and gaze endlessly into space. For those leaving the well-lit haze of London, it’s a particularly popular spot. It can be tough to believe this rural field, where a mere six camping pitches spread across some four acres of space, is just half an hour from the M25.

Given its proximity to London, Star Field is a pleasingly paired-back and basic affair. It will suit anyone who wants to really cut the cord from urban life. The campsite is entirely off-grid, with neat composting toilets and gas-heated showers, and the sheer space on offer means your pitch only ever feels hemmed in by nature – the long grass, cowparsley and wildflowers of the meadow – rather than by other campers. There are pre-pitched bell tents, for those who want the wild experience but don’t have their own equipment, and there’s one bell tent that’s fully furnished, including real beds, for those who, well, don’t like things too wild at all.

Star Field is set in one of the most picturesque meadows on Charity Farm, now under the fourth generation of the same family, which began life as a chicken farm before diversifying into selling hay, straw and forage from a small on-site country store. Over time, the store expanded (you can now buy the latest knit wear or a Joules raincoat when you come here camping), while a clutch of free-range hens and pigs still occupy the farmyard above the campsite. The result is local goods conveniently located, while still enjoying that off-grid experience. It takes little over a couple of minutes, for example, to walk to Cranbrook Farm Shop and buy beef burgers for your campfire or freshly baked bread from the bakery.

Elsewhere, you can walk to Bedgebury Forest right from the site (or get there by car in under 5 minutes with parking free-of-charge there). It’s a pleasant half-hour walk into Cranbrook, the smallest town in Kent and a thoroughly pleasant place, with a host of excellent independent cafés and pubs. A working windmill, built in 1814, dominates the local skyline there, while the local church also holds a little known historic artefact, the prototype for the clock on Big Ben. It’s 10 minutes to Sissinghurst Castle, 15 minutes to Bodiam Castle and 20 minutes to Scotney Castle – all owned by the National Trust – while the coast around Hastings and Camber Sands is 35 minutes or so by car. In all, though, this back-to-basics campsite is the sort of place where time will happily be ebbed away around the campfire or simply doing nothing at all. After all, that’s what disconnecting and being off grid is all about.

Composting toilets, gas-heated hot showers, covered washing-up area, bins and recycling area. BBQs are permitted but must be raised off the grass and campfires permitted in the firepits provided (logs and kindling can be bought from the country store; please do not bring your own). Charity Farm Countrystore is less than a minute's walk from the camping field and sells a range of products including pet food, clothing and Calor gas. There is also a well-stocked farm shop for food (Cranbrook Farm Shop). This is a working farm with free range chickens and pigs. Though the campsite is entirely off grid, you can arrange with the owners to have phones charged and ice-packs re-frozen if you're desperate.

Suitable For

Tents, campervans, trailer tents, dogs – yes. Caravans, large motorhomes, young groups, single sex groups and noisy folk – no.

Nearby

Facing the English Channel, the South East of England is real castle country and Star Field is well placed to visit the best preserved of them. Bedgebury Forest is a short walk from the campsite or less than 5 mins away by car (free parking). It's a 15-minute drive to moated Bodiam Castle (01580 830196), a 14th century marvel that is the classic image of a castle, while Leeds Castle (01622 765400; 30 minutes) is built on an island in a widened section of the River Len and is a truly spectacular sight. It's a 20-minute drive to National Trust-owned Scotney Castle (01892 893820), too, though this is more of a country house than a castle, with extensive gardens (which are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a celebrated example of the Picturesque style). It takes around 40 minutes to drive from the campsite to the coast – Camber Sands is the nearest well known beach – while Bedgebury Forest, great for walking and cycling on car-free trails is 25 minutes away and Bewl Water is just beyond. The tiny market town of Cranbrook is a 20-minute walk or 5-minute drive away and worth wandering to, with ample independent shops and some historic eateries alongside newer establishments (see Food & Drink).

Food & Drink

Cranbrook Farm Shop (01580 712546) is a 1-minute walk from your camping pitch and sells local produce, hot teas and coffees and take away lunches as well as being a Cook outlet. For larger shops, there is also a Co-Op in Cranbrook (5-minute drive or 20-minute walk). Cranbrook has 3 pubs: Larkins' Alehouse (07917 252585), the first micropub in Cranbrook, is best for real ales, while The George Hotel (01580 713348) is the posh oldie of the bunch – it's been open since 1300! The White Horse (01580 720727) is the most lively option, with live music from time to time. Cranbrook also has a plethora of cafés – try Arthur’s (01580 720880) for good coffee, Cocolicious (01580 714954) for sweet treats and afternoon tea or Waterloo Tea Rooms (01580 713802) for a quirky setting among the antiques and good views of Cranbrook's windmill. Further afield, it's a 10-minute drive to The Milk House (01580 720200) in Sissinghurst – it's a good one for families, with dogs welcome and a large outside space with a play area for children.

The Owner Says

Star Field Glamping and Camping at Charity Farm is a family run glamping and campsite based on a working farm in Cranbrook, Kent (previously known as Charity Farm Camping).

If you're looking for a simple off-grid country retreat to enjoy a well-earned break with a clear view of the night sky, then we've got a pitch for you. If you fancy something a little more glamorous, we've got you covered as well. If you have an event going on, or simply want to take a break with all your family and friends and want to book the whole site we can organise that too.

Social Distancing Measures

We are a small and spacious site but have decided to take out some pitches to be even safer.

All of our glamping tents have their own toilets (Bramble and Nettle have exclusive showers too) we are asking guests to bring their own bedding and linen, we will extend the changeover period too so that we can deep clean in between guests.

Between the 9 grass pitches there will be 3 composting toilets.  For showering the 9 pitches and 2 naked bell tents will share 2 gas heated showers and an open air solar heated shower (bring your swimming attire for this!).

Stand pipes with drinking water are available throughout the campsite and there are two wash basins with hot and cold water for handwashing and a washing up area.

All shared areas will be cleaned daily and cleaning and sanitizing products will be available to use as required.

This site offers our Coronavirus Booking Guarantee

Soooo quite and beautiful surroundings

Great campsite, awesome farmshop. They were very good with covid measures. So clean, they cleaned everyday. *just to let people know, we had 2 days of rain and when we packed up and left, it was difficult to get out of the site with the mud and wet grass* The only issue I had was the toilets (not because they were compost toilets, even though they didn't smell like all other, stinky, compost toilets), the issue I had was, there wasn't enough room to move, disrobe and turn to sit.

Fab weekend in a beautiful place

Absolutely loved the layout of the field, plenty of space in between pitches. We had a small issue with our pitch when we arrived but the owners of the site were fantastic in sorting it. The toilet facilities and showers are fantastic in appearance and cleanliness. We walked into Cranbrook for lunch using the footpath which was a lovely walk. Would highly recommend a stay at the site, we loved it!

Clean and Spacious

Perfect first Glamping experience with our 2 and 4 year old. Everything was reassuringly clean and it gave us extra peace of mind to have our own bathroom and kitchen facilities so nearby. Is set on a slope though which wasn't an issue for us but just something to bear in mind :)

Thank you for your lovely review Kelly, so pleased you had a lovely time! Our slope is part of why the site is so beautiful, with a stream at the bottom of the SSSI woodland but we do mention it a lot on our website so that everyone is aware.

Relaxing and quiet

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay in Dandelion. The campsite is small and quiet and there is lots of space between all of the tents so it feels like your own private field. Everything was set up for our arrival and all the facilities we needed were close by. The well stocked farm shop with veg and local produce were both within a minutes' walk of the field for everything we needed (logs, milk, breakfast items) and more. There is a short 1 mile walk to the nearest town for cafes and pubs. And there is lots to see and do around the beautiful landscape of the High Weald all within a short drive. We will be back!

The quiet get away!

Just got back from a short 3 night stay at Star Fields campsite and it didn't disappoint! The designated 9 pitches all with open fires, (definitely a bonus on those cold nights) meant you had acres of space in a beautiful setting. The additional 4 permanent bell tent pitches looked fab and all had their own facilities and also meant less people for the communal areas. Facilities the nicest I've seen on a off grid campsite and had been really thought through with vanity wash area between the showers and ample hot water for a long shower and throughout very clean. Wash up area and recycling again all considered and very easy to social distance in these strange times as picnic table seating provided whilst waiting! Local farm shop and bakery just a short walk (100m) was really well stocked with local produce and those special treats we all crave! All in all we had a great time with our friends and will definitely be coming back, thank you Star Field for making it such a lovely stay!!

Lovely spot, we’ll be back!

We stayed in the Elder pitch for 3 nights, definitely the best spot for all day sunshine! Because the site is spacious and not overcrowded we never queued for the toilet or shower (even though there is just 2 of each for general campers) The bell tents have their own facilities which does a great job of dispersing people around the site. Very well placed for enjoying the local area and lots of information provided by the owners for recommendations of places to visit, shops, pubs, walks etc. We will be booking to come back again!

relaxing

Nice pitches with plenty of space on pitch and between them. Showers hot and facilities clean and sanitiser readily available. Had I known country store so good wouldn't have bothered bringing food along as could have shopped there daily as produce very good. Only negative was the fact you could hear road noise from the nearby A-road.

Response from Star Field Camping

Hi Fiona, thank you for your review, so pleased you enjoyed our facilities and the farm shop.  We are planting trees to try and muffle any traffic noise.

Wonderful little campsite

Just what we needed! A lovely campsite in a rural setting. The pitches are well spaced out and the facilities are great - clean and well designed with nice hot showers. We walked to Cranbrook (about 25 mins) across apple orchards and fields to see the windmill and really pretty little town (its not obvious how to get onto this walk from the maps - you turn right out of main gates; first left along a gravel path which leads to a static caravan site, cross a stile into an apple orchard; follow the footpath past a farm; then wind through a few residential streets and you'll see the windmill sails poke into view- then just follow them). Each pitch comes with a fire pit and you can buy fire wood & kindling in the excellent farm shop. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and will definitely return again.

Great facilities, lovely field, covid ready

Very impressed by showers, basins and loos. Well designed and attractive looking. Lots of hand sanitiser and everything seemed clean (Except one morning when both loos had been soiled in the night by young children or drunk adults! But they were soon clean again.) Holly pitch was a bit shady in the evening but with no near neighbours and spacious. There were a number of larger groups there when we were with a lot of kids running around and some cheerful noise. Would have prefered it quieter but it wasn't too bad with the pitches well spaced out. And they had just been released from lock-down! We really liked the convenience of the farm shop, great choice including fresh fruit/veg and pastries and baked goods (with vegan options) and the little nursery has some lovely unusual plants and they aren't badly priced. Walked to Sissinghurst Castle Gardens which was just fabulous. Don't forget to book an arrival slot (while covid restrictions last).

Response from Star Field Camping

Thank you for your review Felix, so glad you liked our facilities.  There were a lot of children the weekend that you were with us, and I did have to have a quiet word with some of the parents, but as you say, they had just been unlocked and were enjoying themselves. It has been a lot quieter since, I think they have run off the excess energy now!
★★★★★

Beautifully set out field

Beautifully set out field with clean rustic facilities. Bit of an inauspicious entry though the side of shop and Farm but once in the field it’s lovely. We were in Willow which was sunny most of the day at the top of the field. The sites are very spacious surrounded by wood and farmland with an open meadow in the middle. Will definitely return.

Back to nature

Really lovely campsite - you definitely do not feel crowded which is a huge advantage. We were on Elder and did not have any issues with the slope mentioned in the description. The field is beautiful and the facilities, well thought out and clean. It might be an advantage to have some separate face-washing/teeth cleaning sinks outside of the showers and wash up sink. Friendly people The only slight downside was we could still hear traffic from a nearby main road at night which was a little bit of a shame.

Response from Star Field Camping

Hi Rebecca, thank you for your lovely review and feedback. Basins are on our to do list for next year.  We do sometimes get noise from the A229 1/2 mile away depending on the wind direction, we are going to plant more trees, hopefully that will help.

Perfect!

We stayed in Nettle which was private and peaceful. Debby went above and beyond throughout the booking process and on arrival! The picnic bench on your pitch was a wonderful touch as were the fairy lights and bunting. The onsite farm shop is fully stocked with BBQ goodness! Cannot wait to return! A simply wonderful experience!

Quiet, natural campsite in beautiful surroundings.

We loved it as we were welcome with our dogs. There are a small limited number of plots that are of a very generous size so makes camping so much more enjoyable. The toilets and showers were superb, solar shower and compost loos, tastefully built and looked after. Owners are charming and made you feel very welcome and then left you to it. Great for walking straight from your tent! Love it and will be back.

Off grid glamping in the serene Star Field

Staying in the private ‘Bramble Tent’ we really enjoyed our time at Star Field. There was a comfortable bed with linens, sweet ornate touches in and out, a composting private toilet and a hot strong shower. The kitchen was well equipped and Dave/Debbie very friendly and helpful. We would not hesitate to stay here again...don’t forget your towels.

Response from Star Field Camping

Thank you for your review, Sarah, please do come back again.  Yes, don't forget your towels, but if you do we won't make you drip dry we can lend you some of ours!  Debby
