Little Halden Farm Summer Campsite

Kent. Tn17 4 Jl, Kent, England
1 acre hosted by Jonathan H.
Set in a secluded Kent valley with woodlands on either side, Little Halden Farm is wonderfully basic, straightforward camping
Little Halden Farm is not just a beautiful place – it’s the result of one family's passion, love and dedication. Tucked away in the heart of the Weald of Kent, the Hilder family have been farming the land for five generations, through a mixed enterprise of livestock, arable and crop-hops. As the years rolled by, Jon & Sara have adapted and evolved the business, with the sole aim of securing the farm for future generations. This evolution is great news for the camping fraternity, as one secluded field, surrounding by lush woodlands has opened its agricultural gates. But you best book quickly – this idyllic pocket of South East England is only open 28 days a year!

It is perhaps the space that is most memorable about Little Halden Farm. With a maximum of just 20 tents at any one time, this is a completely different experience from the ‘pack em in’ sites that are common throughout Kent and Sussex. With this comes a sense of calmness that helps characterise this site as a peaceful retreat, hidden from the rest of the world. Facilities here are basic but more than adequate. Hot showers, toilets and fresh, running water are all present, and campers can also drive onto the field and park next to their chosen pitch. If the weather makes driving on the field difficult, there is plenty of parking close to where you can pitch.

Jon and Sara may be new to traditional camping, but they’re certainly no strangers to hospitality. The family also offer a fine selection of glamping options at their sister site, for those seeking a touch of luxury. And because Little Halden Farm is wonderfully free from too many rules and regulations, they allow visitors to enjoy a campfire – so this is a great spot for some outdoor cooking under the summer sky. What’s more, you can even hire a firepit and buy a crate of firewood (both £5) directly from the farm.

Given Little Halden's countryside setting, it's hardly surprising it's a great place for wildlife spotting. Budding naturalists can have a field day, particularly in the evenings, when a walk around the farm reveals countless interesting sights. The area is abuzz so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for foxes, badgers, weasels, deer, buzzards and kestrels, plus the resident cows and sheep. There’s even an elusive black rabbit so be sure to keep your eyes peeled! Upon arrival, one thing becomes apparent very quickly here: peace and tranquility reign supreme. And just like Jon & Sara's family, you’ll probably want to stay for a very long time.

Nearby attractions

The sandy beach of Camber Sands is only 30 minutes away and worth a visit when the weather is playing ball. Bedgebury Forest & Pinetum are excellent for nature trails, horse riding and mountain biking, whilst the port town of Rye, is one of England's most beautiful medieval villages. Visitors can't help but fall under its spell as you struggle for balance down its cobbled lanes and crooked timber-beamed buildings. Leeds Castle (01622 765400) is pretty close by, as is The National Trust-run Bodiam Castle (01580 830196). Why not take a trip on the Bodiam ferry which takes a tranquil trip down the still waters of the River Rother. There's also the Kent and East Sussex Railway (01580 765155), a time-honoured steam train which travels the line between Tenterden and Bodiam Castle.

Food and drink

The surrounding area has some lovely little pubs including The Bell (01797 280242) in nearby Iden. Here you will find a welcoming atmosphere as well as some decent local brews and hearty pub grub. The small village of Rolvenden is only a short stroll (20 minutes) from Little Halden. At Rolvenden you will find a well-stocked shop which sells a few essentials, and the regions specialty: Korker Sausages. Rolvenden also hosts a farmers market (every Thursday) and boasts its very own micro-brewery in The Old Dairy (01580 243185). For more shops, bars and restaurants, Tenterden is only a 5 minute drive away.
