Set in a secluded Kent valley with woodlands on either side, Little Halden Farm is wonderfully basic, straightforward camping
Little Halden Farm is not just a beautiful place – it’s the result of one family's passion, love and dedication. Tucked away in the heart of the Weald of Kent, the Hilder family have been farming the land for five generations, through a mixed enterprise of livestock, arable and crop-hops. As the years rolled by, Jon & Sara have adapted and evolved the business, with the sole aim of securing the farm for future generations. This evolution is great news for the camping fraternity, as one secluded field, surrounding by lush woodlands has opened its agricultural gates. But you best book quickly – this idyllic pocket of South East England is only open 28 days a year!

It is perhaps the space that is most memorable about Little Halden Farm. With a maximum of just 20 tents at any one time, this is a completely different experience from the ‘pack em in’ sites that are common throughout Kent and Sussex. With this comes a sense of calmness that helps characterise this site as a peaceful retreat, hidden from the rest of the world. Facilities here are basic but more than adequate. Hot showers, toilets and fresh, running water are all present, and campers can also drive onto the field and park next to their chosen pitch. If the weather makes driving on the field difficult, there is plenty of parking close to where you can pitch.

Jon and Sara may be new to traditional camping, but they’re certainly no strangers to hospitality. The family also offer a fine selection of glamping options at their sister site, for those seeking a touch of luxury. And because Little Halden Farm is wonderfully free from too many rules and regulations, they allow visitors to enjoy a campfire – so this is a great spot for some outdoor cooking under the summer sky. What’s more, you can even hire a firepit and buy a crate of firewood (both £5) directly from the farm.

Given Little Halden's countryside setting, it's hardly surprising it's a great place for wildlife spotting. Budding naturalists can have a field day, particularly in the evenings, when a walk around the farm reveals countless interesting sights. The area is abuzz so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for foxes, badgers, weasels, deer, buzzards and kestrels, plus the resident cows and sheep. There’s even an elusive black rabbit so be sure to keep your eyes peeled! Upon arrival, one thing becomes apparent very quickly here: peace and tranquility reign supreme. And just like Jon & Sara's family, you’ll probably want to stay for a very long time.

Great friendly welcome even though we arrived at the glamping by mistake.

Midweek stay for one night, shared entire valley with one other couple. Great location, very quiet and very little light pollution for viewing the night skies, the compost loos were immaculate and the showers were great. You can have your own fires, we used our own basket and bought a large bag of logs for a fiver, great value. Nice walks nearby, trying pubs next time.Looking forward to returning, John the owner could not have been more welcoming. Highly recommended from a seasoned camper.

Peaceful countryside camping

Firstly, I would like to note how Jonathan from Halden Farm was so friendly and made us feel very welcome and settled in. He gave us all the info we needed for our stay. Really does help when you are arriving somewhere new. The field itself was huge with only a few tents spaced far enough so u have privacy but the various kids could get to know each other and play. There are v clean compost toilets and large clean showers. Impressed with how everything is kept so tidy around that area. There’s plenty to do locally... woods (but not on site) steam train, castles etc. Just lovely. Thank you.
