Head into the seaside resort of Shanklin (01983 821000), with its thatched old town at the southern end overlooking the golden sands of the beach. The Shanklin Chine (01983 866432) is a popular attraction, a luscious green ravine with a walkway down the gorge-side to a handful of attractions at the bottom, including caged birds, chipmunks and a Victorian brine bath. Back at the top of the cliff, Rylstone Gardens are also a great place to escape the crowds. Beyond Shanklin, Ventnor, in the south, is a fishing village turned fashionable health spa and boasts beautiful gothic buildings that cling to the slope above the sands. It is a fantastic walk from here to Steephill Cove. Meanwhile, inland, the Amazon World Park Zoo (01983 867122), Brading Roman Villa (01983 406223), Carisbrooke Castle (0870 3331181) and Robin Hill Country Park (01983 527352) all offer plenty to do for families and an insight into the history of the island.
Food & Drink
A coffee and ice cream hut is open during high season offering freshly ground 'Island Roasted' coffee, dairy ice cream and drinks. There is a supermarket 10 minutes' cycle (a 5 minute drive) away in Shanklin. Farm shops nearby include Farmer Jacks (01983 527530), in Arreton, and The Garlic Farm (01983 865378), in Newchurch, both excellent. The Pointer Inn (01983 865202), also in Newchurch, is one of the oldest pubs around and still deserves its local fame, as does The Taverners (01983 840707) in Godshill, a real country bolt hole. In nearby Shanklin, the place to head is down to the waterside where The Fisherman's Cottage (01983 863 882) is tucked away. Uncomplicated and unpretentious, this thatched pub serves some of the freshest fish on the island.
It may be the largest island in England but there's only one campsite you need to know about on the Isle of Wight when it comes to kid-friendly fun. With an outdoor pool, a well-equipped sports area and a perfect, safe location for exploring the isle by bike, Ninham is top of the tree.
