Family-friendly camping on a Hampshire farm, edging the New Forest National Park

Can you remember the exact moment when you became hooked on camping for the first time? At Shelley Oaks, that snapshot moment would be watching the sun rise over the enchanting, dewy pine woodland, at the edge of the site or perhaps the savoury aromas of the full English breakfasts being rustled up by the sleepy campers as they begin to light their campfires. There’s a feeling of community and freedom that Caroline and her family at Shelley Oaks, are cultivating. There is a chilled, family friendly vibe with an opportunity to recharge your batteries.

Camping is a new venture for the Jewell family on their 10 acres of grassland touching the North East edge of the New Forest. You will find only 20 pitches and your main neighbours, over the fence and in surrounding fields, are a flock of fluffy sheep. Caroline wanted to offer campers room to spread out and have their own space and to that end, you can pitch your tent right next to the idyllic, pine woodland. If you’re bringing children, they will, no doubt, have a blast chasing each other within the trees. Boasting brand new shower and toilet facilities, two undercover washing up stations and with campfires allowed, this is family camping at its best.

The farm has direct access to a footpath that runs between West Wellow and the New Forest, so you can walk back to the site after a picnic and gaze up at the unpolluted night sky. For those with children who are super fans of Peppa Pig, Paultons Park is just a five-minute drive away or bring bikes and make the most of the car-free trails through the New Forest, looking out for deer and New Forest ponies. If you prefer peonies over ponies, meanwhile, the stunning Sir Harold Hillier Gardens are also within 15 minutes' drive, home to an incredible 70 different varieties of peony, as well as 20 different wisteria – perfect if you want to stroll the grounds pretending you’re in a period drama.

Brand new facilities block with light spacious amenities. There are two flushing toilets, two basins and two hot showers in both the mens and women's facilities. Plus an additional unisex, family wet room with easy access and baby change facilities. Two under-cover washing up stations. Small freezer which allow for ice blocks. Water points sited throughout the field and at the facilities block. There's also a separate refuse and recycling area. Raised BBQs and campfires are welcome with wood available for purchase on site and blocks are available to borrow to raise fires off the ground where necessary.

Suitable For

Tents, small campervans, families – yes. Motorhomes, caravans, stag and hen dos, dogs – no.

There's plenty for families to do in the local area, not least taking bikes and heading in to the New Forest National Park, which has a host of good car-free cycle trails and footpaths that offer a good way of seeing the native deer and New Forest ponies. Paultons Park is a five-minute drive away, while it's also less than 10 to the picturesque market town of Romsey, home to Miss Moody's Tudor Tea Rooms and other historic delights. Miss Moody, the last owner of Moody’s Gunshop, ran a traditional English Tea Room both before and after the Second World War. Tea is still served in bone china teacups with a selection of cakes on offer in a quaint Tudor cottage. Also in the centre of Romsey lies the The Tipsy Pig Craft Alehouse (01794 501521), which offers an extremely impressive collection of ales to choose from. No fewer than seven National Trust sites are within 20 miles, including the beautiful Mottisfont, a 15-minute drive away. New Forest Wildlife Park is a 10–15-minute drive away, as well as indoor-climbing centre Golden Gecko Climbing (ages five and above).

Food & Drink

The Mortimer Arms (023 8081 4379) is a family-friendly pub a two minute drive away and has a beer garden and serves Sunday roasts. The Rockingham Arms (01794 324798; 10-minute drive) is full of character and popular with the locals serving delicious pub grub and good ales. Fresh cheese and meats from Tatchbury Manor Farm shop (07786 697919; 'Click and Collect' on Fridays and Saturdays) is a seven-minute drive away. New Forest Family Butchers (01794 324111) is a five minute drive. Suan Thai Restaurant (01794 511115; 10-minute drive) serves tasty traditional Thai cuisine and is located in the centre of Romsey.

Getting There

Easy access by road: From M27 junction 2 take the A36 north towards Salisbury. Head straight over the next roundabout then after a quarter of a mile turn right into Shelley Lane. Shelley Oaks Farm is the first track on the left. Watch out for the farm entrance as Sat Navs tends to take you too far down the lane.

Excellent experience

Very spacious campsite in a great location for exploring the new forest. The amenities are new and spotlessly clean. Really safe and other campers were friendly. My son spent hours cycling round the site and one of the great things is that he was always in view. Only downside was that you could hear a little bit of traffic noise from the nearby road but that didn’t really detract from a lovely site. Thanks Caroline for your hospitality!

A Great Stay

The campsite is everything we wanted for a little break in the New Forest. The campsite is spacious, the showers are warm, and the scenery is gorgeous. The best part though was our host Caroline. She was so friendly and accommodating, and on one occasion even sorted us out with firewood at 9pm. I can’t recommend this site enough!

Fantastic campsite, great location

From start to finish the owners of the campsite could not have been more welcoming or helpful. The site was perfect, large open meadows for the children, and woodland to explore. The new shower block was perfect, and cleaned regularly throughout the day to keep it clean. There was plenty of space between the pitches which meant that although we could have friendly chat with other families we weren’t on top of each other. Perfect in every way, would highly recommend! The only minor thing that would have made our stay more relaxed would have been a few plugs to charge devices. We stayed for 4 nights and it would have been useful to be able to charge phones/watches during our stay. Instead we were forced to go and eat some delicious pizza at a local restaurant and charge the phones whilst we were there :)

Fantastic fun family camping

Perfect base for New Forest exploring and trips to the beach. Caroline and Chris were extremely friendly and suggested some fantastic pubs nearby! Facilities great and clean. Lots and lots of space for the kids We will be back!

Great camping site

We had a lovely two night stay. Pitches we're far apart so that was great. Caroline is very sweet and easygoing. Toilets are super clean and showers are hot. Great traile to the new forest, beautiful setting. Downside is the road is close by so you can hear a bit of the hissing sound, but you get used to it quickly and the camp site is beautiful. Also, make sure you get the bus that drop you right in front of the farm otherwise you won't be able to get there by foot.

Lovely campite in a great location

Perfectly located for getting into/around the New Forest, with really large pitches and spotlessly clean facilities. We were travelling with an 18m old and the family toilet/shower room was brilliant - plenty of space and instantly hot water. Caroline and Chris are super friendly and always happy to help. Fire pits on most pitches were also a big plus! Can't wait to come back!

Peaceful, spacious and spotless

A wonderful family holiday in this superb - and excellently managed - campsite. In our view perfectly positioned on the northern edge of the New Forest, so within easy reach of anywhere (including the coast) whilst remaining apart from huge crowds. We loved the spaciousness: the way the pitches are arranged (around the perimeter of a large, open field) works really well and means that everyone gets a tremendous sense of openness and space without feeling isolated. Lots of room to breathe, decompress, run around, and play. The small shower/toilet/washing-up block is new, well judged, and spotless. The fire-pits for evening warmth were a real bonus and we made good use of the fire bundles supplied at small charge. Caroline and her family are warm and helpful hosts to whom we are very grateful for a fabulous week.

Beautiful campsite with good facilities

Very well managed, it was easy to add on a couple of extras (wood for the fire pit, and an extension to stay later on our leaving day). Lovely surroundings, good size pitches, excellent clean facilities, and quiet. A little bit of heaven. It is quite near the A road so a bit of traffic noise, but not enough to be a problem. Will definitely book again.

Clean, scenic and convenient

Great camp site, lovely spacious pitches and really easy to get to. Only downside is that you can very slightly hear a busy road. But overall, a great stay.

Calming and clean

Lovely site, well managed and staff went above and beyond daily. We had a lovely little stay and slept better than I have on any other site! Very much recommended and hope to go back again.

Peaceful and Family Friendly

A very welcoming and well kept campsite with owners that really care about their campers happiness. An idillic location nestled against picturesque woodland. New and clean facilities and good pitches with soft flat ground and fire pits. This was our toddler's first camping experience and we wouldn't hesitate to come back to stay again soon.

Our first camping experience

Just back from our first ever family camping trip and Shelley Oaks Farm ticked all our boxes and more! Beautiful setting with fantastic facilities. The host Caroline was super welcoming and helpful and went out of her way to make our trip one to remember. The nice home from home touches of step stalls and toddler seats in the bathrooms made camping with small children a breeze. The close proximity to Paultons Park was an added bonus. Would definitely recommend and will hopefully be returning next year. Thank you again for a wonderful holiday.

Possibly the best campsite I’ve been on …

A lovely campsite run by lovely people. I would describe it as semi wild as the picthes are mowed but the remaining site is left to grow a little bit taller. At first I thought that was the modus operandi but after observing the owners over a few days there is much more thought goes into the operation. New pitches are created regularly to meet the needs of guests coming onto the site. Three families wanting to share a big pitch with three huge tents - no problem and the pitch appears! I think Caroline (owner) also assesses the needs of the individuals - for me I was left in a corner without being surrounded by families. Perfect! For others I know she took their kids to see the pigs and sheep that are being reared on the farm. Very understated but very well done. Facilities are spotless and more than enough for the size of the site. Being able to cook on fire was a rare treat these days with fire pits built into many of the pitches. Despite this it was clear that some people still managed to burn the grass. If you stay here please don’t do this or we’ll end up with more sites that withdraw the privilege. Ready access to the New Forest was the icing on the cake with adults being able to cycle directly from the site. For kids I would be a bit more wary as you do need to navigate about one mile of A road. In summary - excellent and I almost certainly will be back 👍

Idyllic setting and warm welcome

From the personalised confirmation message to the in-person greeting on arrival, Caroline at Shelley Oaks Farm made us feel very welcome at her lovely site. I found other examples of her personal touch around too: the sunken fire pits, freshly mown pitch, washing up implements, plenty of hand soap and loo paper, and impeccable site cleanliness. All these thoughtful additions made our stay so comfortable and enjoyable. The site is at a convenient spot bordering the New Forest. In just two days we managed a day at the beach, a walk along the Solent Way, a great pub meal at the local Mortimer Arms and a stroll through the woods to the famed "Carlo's" ice cream parlour. The pitches are ample and with plenty of space in between. We enjoyed one closer to the woods where there was a little cover from the summer sun. All our neighbours were considerate and friendly. There was a companionable feel to the whole place. Highly recommended!

We had a excellent time at Shelley Oaks Farm

Excellent size pitches with plenty of space for the children to run around in a safe environment within a beautiful setting. The facilities are new and very clean, the campsite is close to Paultons Park, the New Forest and Salisbury. The hosts were very welcoming, as a family we highly recommend.

Relaxing environment, handy location.

We really enjoyed out stay at Shelley Oaks Farm. The site is surrounded by trees and fields. The ground is easy to pitch on. The facilities are new, clean and nicely fitted out. We love the fact that the farm is working with nature. The campsite pitches were really spacious and mown neatly with the longer grass around for wildlife. This made a perfect, natural boundary. We spotted a barn owl in the trees! The children loved the spaciousness and the fresh air. The location is perfect for visiting lots of locations in the South. Highly recommend.

Great location

We really loved staying the weekend at Shelley Oaks. Such a lovely spot and so handy for Paultons. Nice toilets and facilities. We had a spacious pitch by the pigs, which the kids loved! Beautiful location and lovely, welcoming hosts. We’ll definitely be back next year!

Relaxing break in beautiful surroundings

We had such a lovely stay at Shelley Oaks Farm with our 5 year old and a group of friends. This rural site is very spacious and we loved meeting the pigs and exploring the woodland. Watching the sun set behind the trees was magical! The facilities are brand new and spotlessly clean. The owners have young children themselves and they have made a real effort to make the campsite family friendly; little touches like foot-stools in the loos to help children reach the basins were greatly appreciated. We'll definitely be back!
