Back-to-basics camping with campfires in a spacious wildflower meadow, set on a beautiful New Forest estate

Everything about the New Forest seems spacious and unhindered: The way that deer and ponies roam freely for miles, the way that country lanes seem to dissolve into the verges, the way that bushes and heathland thrive. So it's only right that a campsite like Harry's Meadow feels so open and vast. The space on offer here is immense. And, during a year like 2020, it seems the perfect place to pitch. There's room to find your private area, set down and enjoy some peace, yet at the same time feel somehow sociable, too, as you occupy a campsite with ample space for up to a hundred other people.

Set on a historic New Forest estate, ribboned by trees that cross the land in neat avenues, Harry’s Meadow, is the sister site to the smaller Harry’s Field further south. The main manor house and central part of the estate is closed to campers, but there’s a real sense of privilege to being allowed to camp here. And, with enough space to pitch even the largest of 10-man tunnel tents, you can build your very own country mansion instead.

Given the vast amount of room on offer – think swathes of wildflower-pimpled grass and a handful of huge hundred-year old oak trees – affable manager Jesse has a laid-back attitude about where you pitch. Find a quiet space at the far end of the field, further from the facilities, or pitch near the entrance and the public footpath, which leads across fields to Woodgreen where there’s an award-winning community shop and probably the best pub in the west of the New Forest. Campfires are allowed, dogs are welcome too and, though the facilities are all off-grid (there’s no electricity here), the gas-powered showers are piping hot and there are ample composting loos.

The back-to-basics nature of Harry’s Meadow make this an almost wild camping experience (albeit one with the option of pre-pitched bell tents if you really want to take it easy). It’s fitting given the wild surrounds of the New Forest. Those in the know bring bikes to make the most of the area – the New Forest has miles of car-free trails and it’s a great way to see the ubiquitous wildlife. Even the village green in nearby Hale is a conservation area and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). On rainy days it’s a 15-minute drive to Salisbury and around 20 to family favourite, Paultons Park, while, on sunny ones, it's only half an hour to Bournemouth beach.

Facilities

Harry’s Meadow offers a more back-to-basics camping experience and there is no electricity on the campsite. There are drinking water taps, 10 composting loos and six hot, gas-powered showers. Other than that, the main thing here is bucket loads of space and, while there’s no shop, the community store in nearby Wood Green (just under a mile away) is very well stocked with essentials. Although the campsite is on the Hale Park estate, there is no access to the house of private gardens.

Suitable For

Families, couples, tents, campervans, motorhomes and dogs – yes. Caravans and noisy folk – no.

Nearby

It’s three miles to Langley Wood National Nature Reserve but you needn’t travel that far to enjoy the woods and the quiet surrounds of the New Forest. From the campsite there are plenty of accessible footpaths and cycling routes – bring bikes to make the most of the area – and Jesse is happy to offer advice on the best local spots. If you’re a fan of the campsite’s setting there are other country estates to explore; set in its own gorgeous parkland, two miles from Harry’s Meadow, the grandeur and elegance of Breamore House (01725 512858) has changed little over the past 400 years. The Elizabethan Manor House and Countryside Museum are open for tourists from April until the end of October and there’s a great maze outside for kids. Little ones most love Paulton’s Park (023 8081 4442; 12 miles) however, which has an array of rides and attractions, including a rollercoaster, a log flume, a water park, adventure golf and a 4D cinema. Hugely popular Peppa Pig World is also located there. On particularly hot days, take a drive to the south coast – it's a half-hour drive to the beaches of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Mudeford.

Food & Drink

It’s about a mile from the campsite into the village of Woodgreen, where there’s an excellent community shop selling locally sourced food and all your everyday essentials. The Horse and Groom (01725 510739), also in the village, is known as one of the best pubs in the New Forest, with a wide selection of ales on tap and a lovely garden.

Very well run camp site in a great location - perfect for groups

We had a great 3 night stay here and will definitely be back. Our stay was preceded by foul weather which meant the site's entrance (at the top of a hill) was a mud bath - a problem for most cars heading out of the site on the evening we arrived. However, fair play to the site owners who were providing assistance, including towing with their 4WD. The site dried out very quickly and by the next morning wasn't a problem. The campsite is huge, but didn't feel anything like as crowded as most we've visited. Lots of large groups (mainly families) and the atmosphere was good. Fires allowed - provided they were off the group (there were fire pits for hire). The site was calm by 11, but didn't see anyone enforcing that. The people running the site were informative and keen to help. Toilets (eco and portaloos) were great and plenty of them. I didn't see anyone queuing. The showers were good too, but with only 6 there were queues. No washing up facilities, but that didn't bother us too much for the weekend. Lots of good walks from the site - perfect for dusk strolls. Oh, and amazing sunsets...

Beautiful spacious site with a festival atmosphere.

Beautiful open site with lots and lots of space, surrounded by majestic trees. Great walks, river swimming and village shop. Easy drive to the coast or to Salisbury, Fordingbridge, Stonehenge, and the New Forest. Exceptionally helpful and friendly staff who always went the 'extra mile'. Great showers, great pizza, great coffee and croissants. Practically: it is a basic 'field' campsite, it is on a considerable slope, if it rains it can be difficult to get vehicles on and off, it is twice the price of most places we usually camp. If you like hustle and bustle you'll love it! Folks mainly kept the 10:30pm music curfew, but chose your pitch wisely or if you're the kind of camper who longs for peace and quiet you might struggle. However it's a brilliant camp for group's with friends and family. Children will love the freedom of it. For the time we camped it had a wonderful mini festival atmosphere.

Great back to basics site in beautiful area

We loved that you could pitch your tent anywhere. We were spoilt for choice. Site is on a slope but still plenty of flatter areas. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Twenty minute walk to a lovely pub, the Horse and Groom. Unfortunately we had terrible winds and rain so decided to leave early before we lost our tent but we were very lucky to be able to move to the sister camp site, so perfect. The New Forest is beautiful and we had some lovely walks from both sites.

What a fantastic place

100% will book again at Harry's. Showers, Toilets, brillaint. Lots of Hand Sanitiser to keep everyone clean. Ample space for everyone to relax and for the kids to play. Pizza over turned up on site on the friday, fantastic, along with the cocktail van just added that extra to your stay and went down really well with the kids.

Basic amenities missing

My review is of a mixed one. We arrived a day late due to bad weather and found the site tucked away in a lovely rural location. However no wild flower meadow as all mowed short and considerably hilly which limited pitch option, very different to the pictures advertised. The toilets were compostable and some portaloos however at end of weekend were very full and although hand gel was available there were no hand washing facilities which is a must with children. The showers were basic and at top of site with the loos so had to trudge through think mud to use them. I found the issue of no washing up facilities very difficult and feel the owners should invest in this in order to improve reviews. On the first evening we left the site in our camper to get respite from storm however because of the hill it became impassable due to thick mud. The owners helped tow us out of the mud however our plans had to change for rest of weekend as we did not want to risk trying to get out again. The pizza and cocktail was a welcome bonus. Although we made the best of the weekend I have stayed at much better sites and won't visit again.

Response from Harry's Meadow

Very surprised and disappointed to read this review.
The grass was indeed cut and this is clear gallery images. Any images taken before it was cut have a caption referring to the fact it would be cut. There is a slight gradient yes, but there is still huge amounts of flat area, the 'hill' is represented accurately in the images. Yes as advertised, we have 10 compostable loos and 7 portaloos which are deep cleaned x 3 times a day with medical grade disinfectant. They were also emptied 3 times a week (this is reflected in the reviews commenting on how clean they were). Yes there was lots of sanitzier supplied and it's around a 30 second walk from the loos to 3 fresh water taps where disinfectant soap is supplied. Harry's Meadow is within the grounds of a Grade 1 listed countryside estate, and so it obviously wasn't possible to dig-in water pipes for 6 weeks. The showers are hot and high pressured and cleaned 3 times a day (exactly as advertised) and received a plethora of compliments from our guests via Cool Camping reviews. In terms of washing up facilities, we have 3 taps from which campers filled up their washing up bowls, again, this was clearly advertised. There was indeed mud from a torrential deluge and we towed people out. It seems your experience was unfortunately tainted by bad weather which is of course out of our control.

Overall, we promote Harry's Meadow exactly as it is; a back to basics campsite, set within a stunningly beautiful and prestigious location. We promoted the facilities exactly as they are, hot pressured showers, taps, and loos (as you say, the pizza & cocktail trucks were a bonus). We worked incredibly hard to ensure the best experience for our guests and this is reflected in our average score of 5 Stars over nearly 100 reviews, for which we are grateful.

Fantastic Place, relaxing and beautiful

A great campsite with good, clean facilities, and the addition of pop up catering facilities. The pizzas were delicious and the cocktails (and Mary and Andy) were the perfect addition to the soggy start of an excellent weekend. Coffees and breakfast available in the morning was very well received. On arrival we were created by a friendly guy, who have us as much information as we needed to find our spot and set up. We like that we were able to choose where we wanted to camp, rather than being directed to a spot. We did two great walks from here, with kids from 5 - 14 years and two dogs. The pubs on the routes we both really good. We had had an email explaining that the site was very wet at the entrance and exit, but on reviewing the weather and seeing it was going to improve we decided that we would still make the journey. The ground dried out enough by Saturday mid afternoon for the previous sogginess not to be an issue to vehicles. The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful. They people staying on the site were a mix, good for families, groups of friends and couples. There is enough space for people to be well spaced. My only gripe was some people had music playing late into the night. When electronic music isn't allowed on site, I just was annoyed by it (thank goodness I took ear plugs). But this wasn't the site owners fault, just people breaking the rules. We would love to return next year and hope it comes back!

Perfect back-to-basics break

Yes, it was muddy which made driving difficult on the hill but solved by parking at the top of the actual field. Yes, there are no washing up facilities - weird, but we got round it by boiling water & washing up at the tent. You are also informed before you go there are no washing up facilities so it kind of makes you wonder why you'd book if you're going to complain about it. Yes, we heard music from some tents but we also heard laughing, happy kids playing out in the fresh air, dogs barking, birds singing and people enjoying themselves....there were also lots of moments of glorious tranquility & silence, all of which I think is the perfect combination. All in all, if you are used to an all mod-cons camping trip, this isn't the place for you. It IS basic but the facilities such as toilets & showers are perfectly fine, compostable loos & portaloos; hot, running water in the showers and a decent flow too. There was hand sanitiser on tap, regular cleaning being done, the space is vast so despite there being large groups & big tents we didn't feel crowded together. And the staff are brilliant - friendly, helpful, engaging & informative, the added extras such as breakfast bar, cocktails, pizza were great. Yes, it's quite expensive compared to other campsites, for what you get, but hey, it's 2020, everything we've planned all year including the holiday abroad has been cancelled so we had a few extra pennies to spare! PS would recommend the walk that starts & ends at the Foresters Arms - leaflet picked up at Reception. PPS - how can you not love everything about camping in the New Forest?!

Fantastic Place, relaxing and beautiful

We arrived on a very wet and windy Friday at the beginning of the August bank holiday, knowing there were issues with mud, from an informative email. We quickly found a great spot that was perfect for 3 large tents. The set up was brilliant with Pizza available 2 of the 3 nights, cocktails available every night and coffee in the morning. The loos were clean and never full and a choice of compostable or chemical. The showers we warm and strong. The staff were always available and very helpful and friendly. Great walks from the site, with pubs on route. We really hope Harry's Meadow is back next year. It's was definitely one we would return to.

A lovely area and friendly campsite

Positives: plenty of space, friendly and approachable staff, relaxed atmosphere, composting toilets, great showers, quiet after 11 pm A short walk to the Avon for river swimming was delightful. Tea and coffee on sale and local restaurants will deliver to site. Negatives after an enormous storm the waterlogged entrance and exit couldn't cope with traffic so vehicles couldn't leave. Fotunately, by the end of the week, there was some metal tracking in place making entry and exits much easier. I would prefer to have hand washing facilities outside the loos rather than just sanitiser and there are no washing up facilities, just a tap. It was a bit on the pricey side for such a back to basics site, although the location is great.

Good, basic family fun!

On arrival the staff were quick to help and very polite. They were also very knowledgeable of the local area for tips on places to go.if you wanted to venture out. The facilities were all you needed for a back to basics break with a family. The pitches were plenty big enough so you didn't feel as if you were on a production line row like many sites. There was ample hand sanitizer pumps dotted around for covid procedures. All in all, it was a perfect mini break for our family and we will be returning!

Mixed views

The campsite itself is really spacious and has stunning views, esp if you have a sunny day, there are some glorious sky’s to capture. It is quite expensive for what it is but the addition of a cocktail van, pizza van and breakfast bar on specific days is a nice little touch. It has your basics such as toilets and showers but no washing up facilities which can be tedious. Overall the site is kept clean, however the entry and exit points to the campsite were a disaster. The entry point is quite a narrow turn and on arrival my van got stuck in thick mud and had to be pushed in by people to get to a place to safely pitch. Following this was a day of heavy rain which resulted in disastrous churned up land with mud making it impossible for people to enter or leave. Many cars/vans had to be towed out by the owners or people pitching on the campsite. The evening felt unsafe as many people decided to leave due to a forthcoming storm but were driving up to leave and sliding in the mud and getting stuck. This made it feel unsafe with the potential for cars to slide into tents. It took the owners a while to put some things in place for this, such as some hay laid down and the occasional tractor to help tow people out despite this there were still problems. It put a real dampener on the holiday as owners were saying they would prefer people to stay on site so felt confined to our tents. We originally booked to stay here for 4 nights but left a day early due to a bad storm and 40+ gale force winds and were anxious about being able to get out safely. We would not be in any rush to stay here again.

Response from Harry's Meadow

Hello Iain,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

There was indeed an unprecedented deluge of rain which would present challenges to any campsite, and as I'm sure you'll appreciate, the weather is unfortunately out of our control.

The field is incredibly well drained but a constant flow of traffic meant the entrance was churned up. We responded by using the service gate as the entrance, laying lots of trackway and towing people out, plus we utilised the avenue of trees at the top of the site as a car park so guests who wanted to come and go could leave their cars on hard standing and walk to their camps, as opposed to driving in and out. We also emailed everyone prior to arriving, informing them of the mud at the entrance.

As with rain, the wind and storm was again out of our control.

Best wishes,
Harry's Meadow

Very expensive got what you get

First the positives It’s right in the middle of the New Forrest, clean air, small villages and near a lovely stream for a dip. The facilities were kept clean and were enough for guests staying without queues. Hand sanitiser and soap for washing hands were provided at all times, The food businesses that were passing by were good and ordering was easy and quick. Helpful staff and very friendly, sorted out issues straight away. Hot showers. Negatives The price. We paid £38 pound a night for a tippee tent, 2 adults and 1 child. I did wonder at the time why this price but thought it must be a an amazing campsite. I was wrong. I usually pay around £12-£18 a night for camping and we get permanent facilities, sometimes a pool, pot washing sink etc (I knew these were not available at time of booking but hoped for £38 a night, there was something amazing to the site). I still cannot work out why they charge £20 for a tent and then £9 per adult, It’s so strange. Loud motor on shower from 7am, and made the showers nearest to it smell of fumes. No running water point near toilets, only hand sanitiser, this is 100% must for me in a campsite, I instead walked to the other side where the showers were to wash my hands after loo visit. Not good enough for the price we paid. The site got very muddy, which is totally out of control of the owners, they did try to fix the issue but the site just became a mud bath, cars skidding and my car wheels got so full of mud we broke down. The suggestion of parking outside the field was given on our last day, which I declined as we had a toddler and needed to park up. Further thought would need to be given for further years in respect to rain and the field. Despite people being told at the gate, no music, we had on 3 occasions people talking, yelling and playing music till the early hours, The manager did sort this out but it seems groups of people were allowed to camp together and this will inevitably cause noise.

Great!

We had a great time at Harry’s Meadow. The staff were helpful and efficient. The daily coffees helped as we didn’t take our own stuff due to lack of washing up facilities. Showers, toilets were all fine/clean. Weekend breakfast naps were lovely, as the Friday/Saturday night cocktail/alcohol drinks van. We didn’t try the woodfire pizza on Friday night, however we did get a pizza on Saturday delivered to the campsite from La Lambretta which was nice. We had 2 meals in the Horse & Groom and it was top notch. People on the campsite don’t quite adhere to the noise curfew, but maybe it was just the folk next to us (loud gatherings beyond midnight every night we were there).

Great weekend

Great experience camping here with a group of 9 - lots of space and flexibility around where you pitch, etc. The facilities are basic (just some toilets and showers) but there is a little van serving breakfast baps and coffee in the morning and cocktails in the evening, and local restaurants deliver food if you get tired of trying to cook for yourself. Beautiful area and nice walks and pubs close by. Would recommend for a chilled weekend - definitely a relaxed / family vibe.

Fair but pricey

We go camping often. We thought we’d try somewhere new and were sucked in by the reviews. Unallocated pitching was good. It was great that we could have a fire and taking our dog was essential. Lots of dogs onsite but many not kept on leads, as the booking arrangements said they should be. The meadow itself was well drained, which was a boon as we had quite a lot of rain. Composting toilets were good and ample. We didn’t use the chemical toilets. The “Posh Showers” were excellent. In all it was very overpriced, we felt. Perhaps the owners were taking advantage of the “staycationers”. There was occasional onsite catering: a pizza van, a coffee van and baked potatoes. Maybe the high fees were paying for those facilities. We won’t be in any rush to return. There are other similar sites that we prefer

Response from Harry's Meadow

Hi Duncan,

Thank you for your review.

Glad you enjoyed the showers and good you appreciate how well drained the area is, such a shame it was raining during your stay!

Sorry to hear your felt our campsite was expensive. We certainly weren't taking advantage of 'staycationers' as you suggest. The pricing structure was replicated from Harry's Field which has been going for over 6 years.

We feel the experience we offer demonstrates excellent value; the opportunity to camp within the grounds of a Grade 1 listed New Forest countryside estate (not many campsites are situated in such a location) with stunning views over the Avon Valley, and within a 5 min walk to the Avon river where you can swim and relax.

Best wishes,

Stunning site, peaceful, friendly

The meadow is very beautiful, sweeping down from the highest point to woods at the bottom. It has the feel of a festival. Very basic, but kept very clean. Jesse and the rest of the staff were relaxed, charming and very warm-hearted. We found other campers to be friendly in a socially distanced way. We were sorry that music was not allowed if played quietly and sensitively; it was hard for us to be sitting round a glorious campfire on a beautiful evening without a bit of chilled guitar playing. We hope to return another year.

Relaxed, back to basics camping

Beautiful site with views over the fields from the top of the hill. Showers are hot and powerful and composting toilets very clean (portaloos also available but we didn't use them). Three taps for water/washing up and good info from reception on local walks etc. River 5 mins away for paddling and swimming and local pub 20 mins walk, very friendly with good food. Various food vans visit - pizza, coffee, breakfast sandwiches. We took our one year old and the site was safe and very family friendly - lots of kids around. Harry's Meadow promotes itself as back to basics camping in a stunning location and it does this extremely well.

Very spaced out and chilled out

This was a great place for our family to stay. The field was large and allowed for plenty of room between pitches. They are no set pitches so you can choose where you liked which was great! I would advise to camp at the top end of the field. That way it’s not too uphill to the toilets but you miss the early morning sun so you get a lie in! The showers where clean and warm enough for the weather with no queue when we were there (beginning of August) great to have a choice of composting toilets or regular portaloo. 15 minute walk to the local river which is clear as a bell and shallow so great for a dip, but strong current so watch the little ones! Local pub did great food and had a lovely garden. Matt and Sophie were the right side of informative yet laid back! We will be returning for sure.

Lovely site, relaxed and spacious. Pretty good facilities, lots of added extras available including very expensive firewood and fire dish hire. Bring your own!

Lots of room, lovely setting, nice walks nearby. My husband saw a Wild Boar!! Pretty quiet, although we had 2 instances of noisy neighbours (one lot partying loudly at 2am!) that we had to deal with ourselves. Was really nice to have the option of pizza on Friday evening, and the breakfast van offering baps, and the coffee van. Also we could have ordered in a cream tea which was a nice touch. There was a large bit of poo behind our tent as we pitched up which was off-putting and the price of firewood was silly, plus a bit misleading. We hired a fire dish for 2 nights for £20 which we thought would come with firewood both nights, but turns out they wanted an extra fiver for more wood the next night. There was only enough wood o last for a couple of hours as well, so definitely bring your own, and would also be cheaper to buy your own fire dish! Nice site though, good vibe. Give it a go!

Bliss

Arrived to a friendly and relaxed welcome. Told us the basics and if needed anything they stay around until 11pm! Clean compost loos and showers which is great in this current climate. Beautiful spot and plenty of space to camp. Great bacon van that came on weekend and pizza on the Friday night when arrived which made it easy. Great pub down the road too that site recommended Horse and Groom. Great staff and food! We had tears when left from my children who h says it all. Thank Harry's Meadow for helping us make memories.

Clean loos which is a challenge for compost loos! Amazing showers and again clean which is so important in the climate! Plenty of logs to buy, great bacon van that comes at weekends and pizza was great when didn't want to cook when just arrived. Beautiful surrounding area, tears from my children when left which speaks for itself. Thank you for helping us make memories Harry's Meadow.

Relaxed vibe with everything you need

This pop up campsite was perfect for a socially distanced break without worry. The field is HUGE so plenty of space to camp away from others. Sadly I had some idiots pitch right on top of me while I was out for the day, but I moved my tent to a new spot and avoided the idiots - this was not Harry's Meadow's fault, as they clearly tell everyone upon arrival to pitch minimum 10m away from anyone else.......but some people have no common sense or just don't care. The facilities were perfect - lots of toilets, hand santizer as you go in and when you come out. Showers if needed, and saw them cleaned regularly - i used them once in my stay and were clean and hot. While this "campsite" is minimal, they have done really well to provide facilities while keeping the non-commercial relaxed vibe. They had a pizza truck come Friday night (very popular so book early!) and then Sat a breakfast truck and Sunday both the breakfast truck and a GREAT coffee van! Would have liked to stay longer and would thoroughly recommend to anyone. It rained most of our stay, but we will really enjoyed it - perfect location too for exploring the quieter northern New Forest. Saw lots of deer, wild boar, horses, donkeys and cattle roaming!

This is a fab simple campsite set in a picturesque spot. Facilities on site were well maintained and the staff were friendly and helpful in recommending places to explore nearby including a swimming spot in a local river a few minutes walk away. Back-to-basics, laid back camping - very much 'festival' style (but tranquil and without the sound stages!)

Friendly crew on arrival, very laid back and chilled approach. Very much a 'festival' style campout (albeit tranquil and without the sound stages!) a few PortaLoo's and a bank of Compost Toilets, a Shower Wagen and a tap for fresh water.. that's it!... and that's its charm... no shop, no electric hook-up, no clubhouse, no arcade.. no frills and all the better for it! It's quite a hill, so you will get a good workout going to the toilets/showers if you are camped at the bottom! We visited in August during Covid pandemic, and the site always had plenty of Sanitiers / AntiBac, and there was more than enough room to socially distance between families. It's bare-bones and beautiful for it. We'd definitely drop in again in the future. Thanks.

Such a lovely campsite

We booked last minute for a week away and so enjoyed our time at this lovely campsite. The owners were so friendly and gave such helpful advice for walks, bike rides and places to eat. The fire pits and log buying was done really well too. We stayed during the heatwave in August and were so so pleased to have the river for swimming and cooling-off in just a 5 minute walk away; this just made out time at Harry’s Meadow all the more special. We were able to camp with friends flexibly for just part of our stay. Really good showers too. It would be even better if there were a small onsite shop selling essentials and some washing up points (although the latter less important from my point of view). Thanks for a lovely summer holiday break!

Fantastic stay!

We have recently returned from our first stay at Harry’s Meadow. The site was spacious and clean, there were friendly check-in staff and the toilet and shower facilities were clean and tidy. We were actively encouraged to pitch our tent a very good distance from others (which is refreshing compared to some other sites we have stayed at). The coffee/tea/hot choc van that arrived in the morning was a lovely touch. We spent a lot of our time at the local river (5 min walk) which was a safe place for kids/dogs/adults to play in! The pub recommended by the site staff did not disappoint (Horse and Groom) - lovely home cooked food, friendly staff and a large garden. We definitely will be returning to Harry’s Meadow and will be recommending it to all our camping friends.

Perfect Simplicity - Idyllic Surroundings

Lovely relaxed campsite with just the basics of what you need. Compost toilets were really good and well maintained and warm showers were good. Loved the fact that there no music or radios were allowed so you could really soak up the peaceful nature of this idyllic part of the countryside, where kids could run free and have fun exploring, riding bikes and building dens. There were a good number of people there but not too many so we didn't feel crowded, which is reassuring during the pandemic! Lots of lovely walking and exploring to be done without having to drive anywhere and we loved the community village shop in nearby Woodgreen.

Fabulous!

Have just got back from a fabulous few days at Harrys Meadow. Great space, fantastic location and extremely friendly staff always on hand to answer any queries or just to have a general conversation with. Lovely lovely lovely

Huge field in corner of New Forest, well maintained. Facilities exactly as described, it is a back to basics experience which is what we wanted. Staff helpful with good local recommendations. Swimming in river short walk from site a real highlight. The site does lack shade which was a bit of an issue during the current heat wave. Look forward to coming again.

Very chilled

3 very chilled nights in Harry’s Meadow. The rules of no music and 10m distance between pitches well observed. Staff really helpful and the fire pits gave that back to nature feel. Loads of space. Toilets and showers well monitored and kept clean. Though we didn’t use it, the real coffee land rover was a nice touch. Stumbled across Harry’s Field which looked much busier so very pleased we went to the Meadow.

Laid back camping near gorgeous river swimming

We loved the laid back vibe of Harry’s Meadow and will definitely be coming again. It was a heatwave when we came so it was all we could do to grab a coffee from the mobile coffee man, wander down to the river, jump off the bridge and swim, wander to the gorgeous pub past the wandering donkeys for lunch, and wander back via the river again. Huge sloping field with cracking sunsets - lots of room to play and chill. Showers are fab! We felt quite far from the loos and showers and water taps at the bottom end of the field so next time we might try for a pitch a tiny bit closer. Staff were helpful and also very chill. Really lovely place.

Excellent for short stays but could do with a couple of improvement for longer stays...

The positive: Great location, spacious campsite, friendly staff (and nice people all around), campfire & bbq allowed, safe for kids, hand sanitizer well supplied everywhere (yes it is 2020!), river nearby particularly appreciated as we went during a very hot weekend and a very enjoyable experience overall. What could be improved (specially if you plan a week long stay or longer): better washing up facilities (sinks) or a freezer for ice (I know no electricity but...). A bit pricey but it's my first time in the New Forest so I'm not sure how they compare... I was happy to find a campsite with space to be honest!

Response from Harry's Meadow

Hi Matthieu, thank you for this review, we're glad to hear you enjoyed your stay!

RE. installing sinks, this isn't possible as are within the grounds of a Grade 1 listed country estate, we do our upmost to ensure the information is communicated to our guests prior to arrival.

As for freezers, we very much promote ourself as an off the grid back to basics campsite. I think we have to be reviewed within the context of how we promote ourselves, i.e. stunningly beautiful campsite within the new forest, with excellent toilets, showers and fire pits. Having the river Avon a 5 min walk from our campsite has proven to also be a huge benefit in this hot weather as you say.

Thank you,

Incredible campsite

We are a family of 5 with 3 kids under 12 so the back to basics camping and HUGE space of Harry's Meadow was a real draw for us. We weren't disappointed! The meadow is in the most beautiful area, and a very short walk down the hill is the lazy river Avon, with a bridge which my kids and many others enjoyed over and over again in the heat! The toilets are kept clean and tidy and the showers, just WOW! Hot and powerful all day long and never had to queue for longer than 5 minutes. We stayed at the weekend and immensely enjoyed the breakfast van and the beautiful coffee provided by John at Grounded Coffee (from a converted horse cart!) Who was a really great bloke. The staff at Harry's Meadow are always happy and accommodating which is no surprise as they work at such a great place! We will certainly be back. Thank you all

Beautiful scenes and clean facilities!

We highly enjoyed our time at Harry’s meadow, we were shocked at how beautiful and peaceful it is from the moment you arrive. It’s very family friendly but also a fun location for friends to meet up safely during these times. Plenty of room for everyone to be spread out and so many bottles of hand sanitizer and soap at all of the facilities, even the little picnic tables at the top of the hill. The toilets were a very nice surprise, not once did I walk into a cubicle and it didn’t have toilet paper (portaloos) and the compost toilets were also kept so clean. The showers were just being cleaned every morning we walked up there which was lovely and everyone was very respectful of the environment as well as the quiet rule after 10:30pm. You can enjoy some wild swimming just a 10 min walk from the campsite and we spent most evenings watching the sunset over the river, I can’t recommend this place enough it’s got everything you need to take in the beauty of the new forest and be comfortable. Thank you!

Lovely campsite, great amenities

Just got back from a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Showers were fab, clean and warm and the toilets were kept clean. Only thing I would add is we were further down the field and it was a real uphill trek to the toilets maybe some compo loos at the bottom of the field too. A coffee van among others were a very welcome sight in the morning and we had some very tasty pizzas delivered from Lambretta in Fordingbridge which were delicious. Overall brilliant campsite with loads of space, we would definitely book again.

Lovely site, stunning sunsets and night skies, well managed

Lovely big site where our three small family groups met but could camp socially distanced and find space for cricket, frisbees etc. Having evening fires in hearths provided (at a cost) by the organisers was very enjoyable, and left the field without burn marks. All was clean, and well managed, including the compost toilets, and the showers are excellent. The showers and one tap to fill your water containers were the only water supply, but hand sanitizer was available in abundance, and notices to use it. The rules about quitness seemed to be well respected, and everywhere litter free. Thanks for that to the other campers as well as the staff. The site is quite sloped, and whilst we found plenty of flat space midweek I imagine some may have found it a challenge at the busier weekend. The toilets, showers and entrance are all at the top of the slope. We camped at the bottom. A bit of a trek, but also absolutely worth it for the stunning views, especially the sunsets, seen from the top. A great star-gazing site too, if you have the good weather, which we did. No wild flowers, as the meadow was mown, but the surrounding area is beautful with plenty to see. The River Avon is a short walk away, pretty and rather fast flowing there, but our family enjoyed swims in an area near the bank, whilst others had life jackets and paddle boards. A lovely few days, thank you.

Great campsite in a beautiful location with super friendly and approachable staff. Compost toilets and poshwash showers were basic which was perfect for us, but bear in mind if you're looking for a bit more luxury. They were always very clean and we didn't have to queue at all, even at peak times. Fires are allowed and you can rent a firepit/buy logs on site. Plenty of space to pitch up wherever you like on the field with a good distance between yourself and others. Can't wait to visit again!

Chilled, easy going, fires allowed

Its very spread out, you can go where you like, nothing rigid or over organised like some campsites. There was loads of room. You can have a fire pit and buy wood on site. The walk to the village can be done entirely off road but its a bit longer that way, or a short walk along a quiet lane. The downside of the space and chilled out vibe is the lack of facilities, only loos, showers and cold water taps but as long as you know what your are getting that is fine. Everyone was friendly and it was so spaced out and large that social distancing was never an issue. The village shop has everything you will need and there is no need to drive anywhere if you can walk a mile. Would recommend it for families and anyone who wants a great location in the north of the New Forest.

It was nice.

This was my first time camping since my parents took me as a young child, therefore I gave no point of reference to compare it to other campsites. (I feel the numerous Reading festivals I went to in the 90's and early 2000's do not count!) I can say this however. The booking was simple The staff were friendly and very helpful There were clean toilets There were clean showers There was plenty of room to pitch my feeble excuse for a tent. And the surroundings were beautiful I'd be more than happy to visit the campsite again.

Camping as it should be

There’s so much space here and the views of the sunset from the top of the field are incredible. The compostable loos, the portaloos and the hot showers (with enough hooks so your kit doesn’t get soggy) are spotlessly clean. A wood fired pizza van visited on Friday night, and a breakfast van on Saturday morning. Campfires, no electricity and a relaxed atmosphere added to our stay. Walking 10 mins to the river for a swim in the crystal clear waters was definitely a highlight - bring a wetsuit if you’re prone to being chilly. The hosts were knowledgeable, approachable and friendly. Highly recommend.

Facilities on site were basic but perfectly adequate. Lots of hand sanitizer available and cleaning going on. We would come more prepared next time with a water carrier as the taps are only on one side and there is no dish washing sink but that wouldn't put me off now I know. My Son and I pitched up at Harry's Meadow for one night and found it to be a great location to explore this part of the New Forest. With the River Avon just a short 5 minute stroll away, we enjoyed a fresh dip in the clear flowing waters. The Campsite is a very peaceful area even with 80+ other tents occupying the field. The shower and facilities are very well kept and maintained. It's also a great spot with a clear evening sky to star gaze! Although were not frequent campers, we had a great time - although next time I will remember to pack some soft pillows! Many thanks to the Management team for your wonderful hospitality.

Perfect calm camping

We tested the walk from the meadow to the horse and groom pub, lovely stroll through country lanes, and it took us about around 20 mins. Would highly recommend a few nights here. Perfect camp site and we will be certainly heading back soon
