Back-to-basics camping with campfires in a spacious wildflower meadow, set on a beautiful New Forest estate

Everything about the New Forest seems spacious and unhindered: The way that deer and ponies roam freely for miles, the way that country lanes seem to dissolve into the verges, the way that bushes and heathland thrive. So it's only right that a campsite like Harry's Meadow feels so open and vast. The space on offer here is immense. And, during a year like 2020, it seems the perfect place to pitch. There's room to find your private area, set down and enjoy some peace, yet at the same time feel somehow sociable, too, as you occupy a campsite with ample space for up to a hundred other people.

Set on a historic New Forest estate, ribboned by trees that cross the land in neat avenues, Harry’s Meadow, is the sister site to the smaller Harry’s Field further south. The main manor house and central part of the estate is closed to campers, but there’s a real sense of privilege to being allowed to camp here. And, with enough space to pitch even the largest of 10-man tunnel tents, you can build your very own country mansion instead.

Given the vast amount of room on offer – think swathes of wildflower-pimpled grass and a handful of huge hundred-year old oak trees – affable manager Jesse has a laid-back attitude about where you pitch. Find a quiet space at the far end of the field, further from the facilities, or pitch near the entrance and the public footpath, which leads across fields to Woodgreen where there’s an award-winning community shop and probably the best pub in the west of the New Forest. Campfires are allowed, dogs are welcome too and, though the facilities are all off-grid (there’s no electricity here), the gas-powered showers are piping hot and there are ample composting loos.

The back-to-basics nature of Harry’s Meadow make this an almost wild camping experience (albeit one with the option of pre-pitched bell tents if you really want to take it easy). It’s fitting given the wild surrounds of the New Forest. Those in the know bring bikes to make the most of the area – the New Forest has miles of car-free trails and it’s a great way to see the ubiquitous wildlife. Even the village green in nearby Hale is a conservation area and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). On rainy days it’s a 15-minute drive to Salisbury and around 20 to family favourite, Paultons Park, while, on sunny ones, it's only half an hour to Bournemouth beach.

Harry’s Meadow offers a more back-to-basics camping experience and there is no electricity on the campsite. There are drinking water taps, 10 composting loos and six hot, gas-powered showers. Other than that, the main thing here is bucket loads of space and, while there’s no shop, the community store in nearby Wood Green (just under a mile away) is very well stocked with essentials. Although the campsite is on the Hale Park estate, there is no access to the house of private gardens.

Suitable For

Families, couples, tents, campervans, motorhomes and dogs – yes. Caravans and noisy folk – no.

It’s three miles to Langley Wood National Nature Reserve but you needn’t travel that far to enjoy the woods and the quiet surrounds of the New Forest. From the campsite there are plenty of accessible footpaths and cycling routes – bring bikes to make the most of the area – and Jesse is happy to offer advice on the best local spots. If you’re a fan of the campsite’s setting there are other country estates to explore; set in its own gorgeous parkland, two miles from Harry’s Meadow, the grandeur and elegance of Breamore House (01725 512858) has changed little over the past 400 years. The Elizabethan Manor House and Countryside Museum are open for tourists from April until the end of October and there’s a great maze outside for kids. Little ones most love Paulton’s Park (023 8081 4442; 12 miles) however, which has an array of rides and attractions, including a rollercoaster, a log flume, a water park, adventure golf and a 4D cinema. Hugely popular Peppa Pig World is also located there. On particularly hot days, take a drive to the south coast – it's a half-hour drive to the beaches of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Mudeford.

Food & Drink

It’s about a mile from the campsite into the village of Woodgreen, where there’s an excellent community shop selling locally sourced food and all your everyday essentials. The Horse and Groom (01725 510739), also in the village, is known as one of the best pubs in the New Forest, with a wide selection of ales on tap and a lovely garden.

Lovely campsite

Really lovely campsite and weekend stay, really peaceful and relaxing The only negative is there was no washing up facilities, but this did not dampen our weekend Will definitely return next year

Ideal, peaceful getaway!

This is a really lovely campsite with welcoming staff and a relaxed vibe. Great to be able to pitch your tent where you like and good space between tents adhered to by all fellow campers. Lovely view over the surrounding hills from the top of the meadow. Easy stroll to the local river to jump off the bridge and swim in! Perfect getaway from it all on these uncertain times:(

Amazing and chilled

Absolutely amazing place. The staff are amazing and were very welcoming and friendly. The site itself is beautiful with amazing views across the hills with a short 5 minutes walk down to a stunning river so take your swim stuff and towel if you’re brave enough (it’s a bit chilly) will definitely be back again!

Great countryside camping experience

My husband and I went camping at Harry’s Meadow with some friends over a 4 day weekend. The layout of the campsite is simple and has basic amenities such as toilets, water and showers. The staff at reception were helpful and informative. The food trucks that visit on the weekends were a nice touch and we stocked up on yummy treats! The site is in a great location for walking, swimming or hitting a local pub. We would definitely go back!

A perfect weekend

We had the most magical camping weekend at Harry’s Meadow. The site itself is beautiful, spacious and peaceful. We were lucky enough to have perfect weather and enjoyed a cloudless night so had the best views of a starry, starry night. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the staff friendly. By the way, the toilets are extremely clean!

Great if you want to walk, ride bike and swim in river

Great campsite, quite and friendly. Only downside is the cheap PLASTIC cups for the compost scoops not very environmentally friendly.

Harry's Meadow is perfect for a get away, you arrive and everyone is really chilled you can drive around the big field to find your perfect spot, toilets and showers on site are always clean and hardly ever a que! You can hire fire pits which is perfect for camping, I couldn't fault it we had the best time and will be coming back.

Thank you for this review Zoe! Please do come back again!

Harry's Meadow is a stunning site. Just beautiful. We are a family of 9, with 4 tents and so the complete freedom to set up together in our own cluster added to the enjoyment. There are lovely walks from the site and the river is stunning for a swim. And the stars at night - Unbelievable! This site gives a real sense of quiet relaxation and freedom and I highly recommend.

Thank you Juliet, made us very happy reading this!

Super location in the heart of the New Forest.

We used it as a base to explore on bikes and by car. It’s hard to beat somewhere so spacious and laid back yet so close to everything our kids wanted from a holiday - bikes, sea and friends. All the children on the campsite played beautifully together until dusk. Bring your own wood so you keep having to buy it - a £5 bucket doesn’t last long.

Relaxed and friendly at Harry's

Harry's Meadow had a relaxed and friendly vibe. The field is a huge space so you can find your own space with space to spare. It's a good location for walking in an uncrowded part of the New First. Only improvement would be a washing area for pots and pans and better recycling. (Please do sort Harry's!) It was all quiet by ten. Perfect for people needing family friendly and a peaceful pitch.

Great campsite!

We had a great stay and would definitely go again. Staff were very friendly and facilities were great. Highly recommend giving this a go!

Response from Harry's Meadow

Thanks George!

Simple, beautiful, friendly & relaxing

Really friendly welcome and great customer service. A lovely site in the middle of the forest with a great walk to the nearby church (you can just hear the distant bells during the night), lots of ponies and deer around. The field is huge, lots of space for everyone to camp in groups or individually and fire pits are available to hire per night, plus good burning firewood. The toilets are good as are the showers which are available from 7am -7pm. The only improvement would be a washing up point but if you remember to bring your own bowl you'll be fine. Loved it, would happily return.

Great location and family friendly

Easy to get to from M27 but quiet and beautiful site when you’re there. Very helpful hosts and really liked the pizza truck on Friday night plus breakfast van weekend mornings. We also had some fantastic meals and beer from local pub which can be delivered to the campsite! Lovely walks direct from the campsite including one to the river where the kids can go swimming. We’d definitely go back.

Thanks Calum, it was a pleasure accommodating you and your son!

A lovely and friendly campsite

We had a really great time at Harry's Meadow. Good hot showers and lots of clean toilets. Hand sanatiser everywhere - which is great in these tricky times. Very friendly staff too.

Great spot for camping

Great place, great location. Family-friendly with lots of space and places to explore.

It was nice.

This was my first time camping since my parents took me as a young child, therefore I gave no point of reference to compare it to other campsites. (I feel the numerous Reading festivals I went to in the 90's and early 2000's do not count!) I can say this however. The booking was simple The staff were friendly and very helpful There were clean toilets There were clean showers There was plenty of room to pitch my feeble excuse for a tent. And the surroundings were beautiful I'd be more than happy to visit the campsite again.

Camping as it should be

There’s so much space here and the views of the sunset from the top of the field are incredible. The compostable loos, the portaloos and the hot showers (with enough hooks so your kit doesn’t get soggy) are spotlessly clean. A wood fired pizza van visited on Friday night, and a breakfast van on Saturday morning. Campfires, no electricity and a relaxed atmosphere added to our stay. Walking 10 mins to the river for a swim in the crystal clear waters was definitely a highlight - bring a wetsuit if you’re prone to being chilly. The hosts were knowledgeable, approachable and friendly. Highly recommend.

Lovely campsite

Beautiful and peaceful area with interesting walks, you can even have a swim in a nearby river. The campsite is well managed, clean and spacious enaugh for the times of covid. You forget any of that anyway which I really needed. It was hard to leave 🖤

First time camping on my own with my dog. From the moment I drove on site I was welcomed by Daisy and Jesse. They made me feel at ease and helped me find the best spot to pitch my tent. The facilities were basic which is what I was expecting, but always clean with toilet roll!! I had the best trip, Jesse drove round to check everything was ok every evening. As a female in my own I felt safe. I would definitely recommend the site.

A peaceful and beautiful campsite

We recently stayed at Harry’s meadow for a few nights, we had such a lovely time we extended our stay for an extra night. The hosts were extremely friendly and helpful. We loved being able to have a fire every night (especially useful as it does get quite chilly at night). Even tho there were an abundance of tents and campers the first couple of nights it was still very quiet and peaceful. The toilet and shower facilities were clean at all times thanks to the cleaner! There was plenty to do near the campsite with the beautiful River Avon just a 5 minute walk away from the site. Would highly recommend and will definitely be staying here again!

Lovely field very friendly, toilets and showers very well kept.

Had a really nice relaxing,2 nights bril, will go back.

Friendly campsite in a great location

Just got back from our first family camping trip and it couldn't have been better. The campsite is pretty basic but that's exactly what we wanted. It was so great to play rounders, cook a bbq and relax by a fire in a big open field with family and friends. The location is stunning. We took a lovely walk to Wood Green Village and had a yummy lunch in The Horse & Groom. We had kids ranging from 6 months to 12 years old and they all really enjoyed it. The campsite felt very safe and clean and the hosts were very helpful. I would highly recommend Harry's Meadow to anyone wanting a back to basics camping trip!

lovely friendly hosts, beautiful meadow and walks. Highly recommend will definitely return for another stay..Thank you

A great little campsite in a beautiful setting. Good, clean facilities, loved being able to hire a fire pit and enjoyed the wood fired pizza’s that were on offer, lovely walks and a good local pub. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We’ve already booked to come back.

Fantastic, rustic camping trip!

Just got back from a fabulous trip to Harry's Meadow with scenic views and lovely walks. The kids absolutely loved playing in the river a short stroll away and we had a really nice meal at the The Horse and Groom pub which you can walk to. Facilities on site were basic but perfectly adequate. Lots of hand sanitizer available and cleaning going on. We would come more prepared next time with a water carrier as the taps are only on one side and there is no dish washing sink but that wouldn't put me off now I know. Staff were friendly and there is plenty of space. It's great that fires are allowed, the atmosphere is very chilled and it was quiet at night time. We sampled the pizzas on Friday night which were very good! Would love to return.

100% go back again!

Group of 5 and we had a lovely time. Very nice hosts at reception, very helpful with recommendations. The meadow has lovely views and very spacious, especially suprised how good the facilities were, great showers. Nice part of the new forest, plenty of stuff to do, nice walks, pubs and rivers. Great that they allow campfires with their provided fire pits, makes very nice evening when it gets dark. The breakfast van in the morning was a nice touch too. Would 100% come back again.

Relaxing camping and stunning location to access the River Avon by foot

My Son and I pitched up at Harry's Meadow for one night and found it to be a great location to explore this part of the New Forest. With the River Avon just a short 5 minute stroll away, we enjoyed a fresh dip in the clear flowing waters. The Campsite is a very peaceful area even with 80+ other tents occupying the field. The shower and facilities are very well kept and maintained. It's also a great spot with a clear evening sky to star gaze! Although were not frequent campers, we had a great time - although next time I will remember to pack some soft pillows! Many thanks to the Management team for your wonderful hospitality.

Perfect calm camping

We tested the walk from the meadow to the horse and groom pub, lovely stroll through country lanes, and it took us about around 20 mins. Would highly recommend a few nights here. Perfect camp site and we will be certainly heading back soon
