Rustic camping and caravanning on an East Sussex farm

Two compost toilets, two hot water showers, and a tap; that’s about all there is by way of facilities at Heronsdale Manor Farm Campsite in East Sussex. If you’re looking for bell tents, bunting and pizza ovens, you’ll want to move along quickly. We love all those things too, and there are certainly lots of them in this neck of the woods, but sometimes you just want a spot of good old-fashioned camping. And that’s exactly what’s on offer here.

Campers first stayed in this farmer’s field back in the summer of ‘84 when Lizzie, who now runs the place, was knee high to the heifers in the surrounding fields. Back then, it was just a tiny handful of caravans or motorhomes who would roll up and make use of the hole-in-the-ground toilet. Things have moved on since then – but not all that much, if we’re honest. There are now a couple of hot showers, a couple of compost loos and a chemical disposal point. The big views and chilled atmosphere are still the same.

The site sticks to the tradition of allowing just about everyone: campervans, motorhomes, caravans and people with their own tents too. Without the confines of electric hook-ups and pitch markers, it is pretty much ‘pitch where you please’ within this three-acre field but the lie of the land and the size of the space means there’s always room for kids to play. In true farm campsite style, there’s no reception, just a sign on the gate to welcome you in. Lizzie will pop by at some point to check all’s in order. She can sell you firewood and hire you an off-ground firepit; we’d certainly recommend it. With no lights on site, the stars here are worth staying up for.

In essence, Heronsdale Manor Farm Campsite is just a field on a farm – but there’s no denying it’s a lovely one. It has distant views of the South Downs, a little dell at one end and it’s surrounded by fields of maize, wheat and barley. Footpaths lead out into the countryside, some through the farm’s 40-acre woodland, filled with bluebells in spring. It’s a 20-minute cross-country walk to the nearest pub in Waldron; the closest of many Sussex villages you might like to explore. Walking, cycling, steam train rides, lovely gardens and the seaside provide more old-fashioned fun on days out. But it’s not far from modern delights either. The bright lights of Brighton and Eastbourne are only half an hour away, though many people come here to escape them.

The Owner Says

Why not take some time out from the rat race to get back to nature and come camping. Relax with friends over a camp fire with a glass of wine and melting marshmallows!

We are a rustic campsite located on a working farm in the heart of East Sussex. Our campsite is set in a 3 acre field which is mainly flat with some wooded areas. We are open to tents, campervans, motorhomes or caravans so whatever your preferred way of staying in the countryside there will be a perfect spot to pitch on our campsite.

Our simple campsite offers drinking water, hot showers, compost toilet facilities, and waste disposal (recycling, general waste and chemical disposal point). Camp fires are allowed and fire pits can be hired and logs purchased.

We welcome children and well behaved dogs, but guests must be aware that this is still a working farm, with tractors, machinery and livestock in adjacent fields.

Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to open our shower and compost toilet facilities between 12th April and 17th May. You will therefore need to bring your own portable chemical toilet if you are booking during this period.

Getting There

Whether coming from north or south, leave the A22 at the Shaw Roundabout between Uckfield and Hailsham, signposted for East Hoathly. When you reach the village centre the road bends right into the High Street. Instead of following it round, turn left into Waldron Road. After 200 metres the road splits, stick to the right (Graywood Road), signposted towards Waldron. After a mile, take a left onto Moat Lane. Heronsdale Manor Farm and the campsite (signposted) will be on your right after another half a mile.

The closest train stations to Heronsdale Manor Farm are Buxted (five miles) or Uckfield (six miles). Bus services to Waldron, which is still a mile from the campsite, are infrequent, so a taxi is recommended for the last part of the journey if coming by public transport.

Exceptional Campsite

In all my years of camping/campervan-ing I have never been to a campsite as beautiful, relaxed, earthy and in my honest opinion, as perfect as this one! Even though the weather was not as kind as hoped, the site maintains a uniqueness that you’ll not easily find elsewhere - If you are seeking a step away relaxing break like no other, you have found the perfect haven. If I could book a permanent pitch (preferably in dry weather 🤣) I absolutely would. This place is an absolute gem, as is the service from the site owner and her family. If I could rate as 10 stars, I absolutely would. Book up and enjoy, you’ll love it.

Lovely, calm, spacious and peaceful campsite

Everything was as described and as it should be. The location is great, with scenic views and many options for walks straight out from the site into fields and woods. The simple facilities are clean and well kept. We would definitely stay here again.

rural, peaceful site -basic facilities but none the worse for that

A lovely site - hot showers and clean toilets, even when the site was busy. gorgeous views over rolling countryside and owls at night. cooked over wood all week - really impressed with the firewood. many sites don't provide properly seasoned wood, but not here! If it's wet, pick your pitch carefully, some parts of the site get very soggy, but there are plenty of drier spots to choose from

Stunning scenery and birdsong

We met friends here and visited family nearby but the real reason for our stay was to have a Camping Adventure that could rival much-missed camping trips in the Middle East. We were blessed with good weather even though a considerable amount of sleep depravation and cold misty nights and mornings were part of the mix.....but that's camping ! The views from the site and the melodic bird-song interspersed by owls hooting made it all worthwhile. Lizzie is an exceptionally welcoming host and the provision of the fire-pit and ample supplies of wood completed the Middle Eastern feel. The facilities are basic but very clean. A dedicated washing-up area would be a helpful addition. We'll be back !

Wild but charming

Had a lovely weekend here. No allocated pitches so lots of space if you are in a group. The facilities were very clean but basic. The site would be very much improved if a hot tap was installed for washing up. The hosts were very friendly and the wood packs and fire pits were excellent. Great walks and views. The star inn was lovely.

Lovely campsite - basic but beautifully situated

Stayed for a couple of nights in early June. Very lucky with the weather: the campsite is beautiful in the sunshine, and we were able to take a long walk around the area. Facilities are basic - long drop toilets, a standpipe and a couple of showers - but Lizzie comes round with firewood each night. Nothing beats a glass of wine by the fire! We would definitely come again.

Perfect family site

Great rustic campsite with friendly owners! Kids loved the climbing trees and walk to the pub(even though it was closed on the day we went:-)) Clean toilets and showers that were always hot, the sacks of wood come with a little starter pack - which I thought was great attention to detail. We'll definitely be back!

Excellent and peaceful

Fantastic no frills campsite set in a beautiful field. Not too crowded when we were there. Lovely walk to a lovely pub, and very friendly and helpful owners. Good supply of wood for a much-needed fire in the evening.

Peaceful, clean and friendly stay

Despite the horrendous weather, we had a lovely couple of nights with the entire place to ourselves, only the sheep as neighbours! The fire pit was a great addition for relaxing next to and cooking marshmallows. The hot showers were perfect for warming up after being soaked through from the rainy walks! Highly recommend this spot if you want to go back to basics.

Fantastic.

Beautiful location, lovely campsite and great owners. We saw sheep, cows, deers, woodpeckers and rabbits. Great to get away in the open. Lovely stroll through the bluebell woods to the local pub the star. Pretty drives under leafy roads to towns such as Lewes and Tunbridge wells and short drive to the beach. Great spot for a fire with marshmallows. Thank you

Gem of a campsite

We have just spent the last four nights at an absolute gem of a campsite. Idyllic surroundings, simply beautiful. Lovely little bluebell wood with a little stream to potter to. Dog friendly.Just loved being able to have a proper campfire on the cast iron fire pits. It was incredibly peaceful. went on lovely walks and the family running the farm here, were just so friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back. Camping at its simplest and absolute best

quiet and secluded in a well sheltered field

Fantastic location and really secluded with lots of trees and interesting areas of the site for kids to play. The site was separated into different sections but it wasn't clear if you had to go to one or the other. No-one is there to guide you when you arrive and you just have to find a spot yourself. We stayed for only 1 night but didn't see the owners at all during that time. We had also missed the fact that the toilets and showers were closed as the coolcamping landing page doesn't mention that and the description starts with "Two compost toilets, two hot water showers, and a tap"... so when we arrived on bikes with tents we were a bit put out that we had paid £20 for a tap..!... the site is lovely and peaceful, except there is a murder of crows in the trees behind the house and they kick off at about 4am so earplugs are a must, especially if you are in a tent.

Response from Heronsdale Manor Farm

Hi Elaine, Thank you for a review and we're sorry we didn't get to meet you. I came out to the field a few times but missed you each time as I wanted to offer you a fire pit and logs as it was a chilly evening. Unfortunately due to the current restrictions the toilets and showers remain closed until 17th May when, fingers crossed, the government will allow us to open the facilities again. The information was in the booking policy before the payment is taken but perhaps it wasn't clear on the Cool Camping landing page - We have now rectified this so that others won't have the same predicament. We've also noted about the pitching and plan to have no designated areas next year as it has caused some confusion here and there.  We are grateful for your comments and we work hard to ensure a pleasant and relaxed stay. We do hope you'll return and look forward to meeting you then.

Perfect campsite

It was quiet, level ground, beautiful views. Weather perfect. A little chilly, but we had cosy fire pit to gather round. Owner so helpful and welcoming. We would go again!

A wonderful, relaxed weekend - very chilled (!), but great to meet up outside with family.

Site is spacious and well maintained. Owner was friendly and helpful.

Peaceful campsite, lovely views

We enjoyed this small, back to basics campsite run by the friendly and helpful owner, Lizzie. There is direct access to footpaths from the site so you can explore the beautiful surrounding countryside or walk to one of the local pubs. Great pizzas at the Blackboys Inn... We really appreciated the fire pit as it was super cold once the sun went down!

Wonderful chilled out site!

We had an absolutely wonderful time here just after it opened for the season. Even though it was freezing at night, the days were crisp and the campfires kept us warm. Beautiful views and easy access to great walks - and pubs. Thanks so much - we will be back soon!

Peaceful, simple campsite with gorgeous woods and very friendly sheep!

I spent 2 nights camping on this lovely little campsite. The hosts were really friendly and checked in on a couple of occasions to make sure I had everything i needed. I really enjoyed long wanders around the beautiful wood which is a few minutes walk from the site. It was a really enjoyable stay and I will be going back.
