Each pitch has ample space for six people or so, with campfire pits available and logs to purchase from the farm. Two scenic outdoor showers, four flushing toilets, plus a separate washing up area for dishes with two large fridge/freezers. No WiFi, but decent 3G signal. The campsite is located in a beautiful 20-acre meadow field amongst the wider 140-acre family farm, with blue texel ewes (with lambs every spring) in the neighbouring meadow. You can also walk or cycle the excellent and car-free Cuckoo Trail, 14 miles of old railway track between Heathfield and Polegate, that's located at the bottom of the farm.
Tents, campervans, couples, families, (quiet and responsible) groups – yes. Dogs, single-sex groups and hen/stag parties – no.
You don't have to stray far; Knockhatch Farm and Adventure Park (01323 442051) is just over 3 miles away – something to keep the kids entertained – and Blackberry Farm (01825 872912) is a great nearby family-run farm with lots of animals and café. The coast, though, is an obvious draw for many, with the famous white cliffs at The Seven Sisters Country Park (03456 080194) and Beachy Head just 25 minutes drive away. Plus don't miss Eastbourne's large and accessible beach. Back in land the South Downs (03003 031053) are even nearer and the beautiful village of Alfriston is a perfect place to visit and enjoy a pub lunch, while culture vultures will like Batemans (01435 882302), the former home of Rudyard Kipling and now a fascinating National Trust property along with 15th-century, moated Herstmonceux Castle (01323 833816); also the home of the Observatory Science Centre (01323 832731). Both are around a 20-minute drive.
Food & Drink
The nearest pub is The May Garland (01435 812249) at Horam, a traditional, family-run spot that's a five minute drive away. There is also an excellent fish and chip shop (01435 812624) in the same village. Perhaps a bit more legendary is The Six Bells (01825 872227) at Chiddingly (10 mins), they offer hearty pub-grub, a never-ending supply of beer and have live bands every weekend. The Plough (01323 844859) at Upper Dicker has an extensive menu and cosy, relaxed atmosphere, while The Gun (01825 872361) at Chiddingly is a classic pub with a country garden and panelled dining room – great for local ales. Both are 10 minutes drive from the campsite. On the third Saturday of every month Heathfield Farmer’s Market is the perfect place to buy fresh local produce, fruit, veg and meat (10 minute drive). If you’re looking for a large supermarket, Sainsburys and the Co-op can be found in Heathfield, whilst Hailsham has a Waitrose, Tesco and Asda.

My partner and I went to Fontmills this weekend with our friends and had the most amazing time. Both Steve and Nicola were so inviting and told me all about there beautiful horses and land. The campsite was clean and spacious and the loos cleaned 3x a day wow!!. My partner and I can not wait to come back next summer.
Lovely back to basics campsite with hot water!
This is a lovely spacious campsite set in a field on a farm bordered by trees. There are really good basic showers that were always clean, hot and powerful and a mixture of compostable toilets and flushing ones too, also always clean. There are washing up facilities, a freezer to store ice packs in and plenty of drinking water posts around. Fire pits are free and logs can be purchased from the small shop along with lamb burgers, bread, eggs etc. The cuckoo trail which runs for about 14miles? can be accessed from the campsite and is a lovely walk or an even better cycle ride. On the whole a great back to basics campsite with the right amount and quality of facilities to make a happy stay. Will definitely go back.
Lovely site with excellent facilities
A well managed and spacious campsite - excellent measures for Covid safety. The communal faciliaties were very clean, some of the nicest composting toilets I have seen! Fire pits were great and really helped with keeping the site clean and tidy. Location is great for lots of walks.
Lovely, peaceful, friendly and safe.
stayed here twice over in late July and early September. Hosts very welcoming. Site very clean and safe. Owners made sure there was lots of room between everyone. Open fires. Peaceful location but still near attractions if thats what you want. Access to the Cuckoo trail which is perfect for a bike ride. Cycled 18km with two 8 year olds. Fell asleep to the sound of Owls hooting! Beautiful. Highly recommended.
Beautiful site. Spotlessly clean facilities and really helpful owners
Really enjoyed staying at this campsite. it's ready well run and lots of thought and effort has gone into making everyone feel comfortable. lots of space between pitches. great location. I really liked how they put families together in one field and couples and small groups in another so everyone can enjoy their own wake up times. highly recommend and will definitely go back
A nice relaxing campsite
I stayed at Fontmills for 4 nights. The site was nice and quiet and the pitches were well spaced out. All facilities were well kept and clean and up to Covid standards. The owners were very welcoming, friendly and informative. This site would appeal to singles, couples, families and small groups. Ideal location for visiting the local area and Eastbourne. I would definitely be returning. Thanks.
Perfect camping experience
Loved this place. We are fairly new to camping (family of four with two kids aged 10 and 4) and our experience at fontmill could not have been easier or more pleasant. Positives: - Great location, within easy reach of lovely places to eat and lots of attractions, National Trust etc a short drive away. - The cuckoo trail is accessed easily from the campsite. We took bikes and rode to Horam for brunch at the Tpodz cafe and emporium. - Always clean, no queues for loos, showers or washing up. - We didn't miss electric hookup - charging points for phones etc are in washing up area. - Really calm with lots of green space for exploring and running around. Chickens and ponies on site. - Helpful owners. - Firepits that you help yourself to. Nice not to see any damage to the earth caused by campfires on the ground. - Campsite a nice size, with lots of space between tents. - Loved spotting birds of prey and hearing owls hooting at night. Negatives: - Some traffic noise can be heard from campsite, but this didn't bother us due to everything else being perfect.
Really lovely campsite with everything we needed to enjoy a lovely weekend escape. The fire pit was such a added bonus and really made a big difference!! Great location too, we did a day trip to Brighton and to the seven sisters down on the coast. Nicola was really helpful and understanding. Thank you!!
Loved it! Very welcoming owners, beautiful setting, good atmosphere around place. I have to say this is a fairly basic campsite but it ticks all the boxes, loads of space for you to pitch and social distance, room for the kids to run around and explore. I don’t know what it was but there were a few large parties but they all appeared to be very considerate, I think as the owners have a very relaxed and welcoming attitude it just creates the right vibe. Facilities were excellent and kept very clean, from a Covid ready point of view I think they have done an excellent job. The fire pits make the cooler August evenings cosy, and the wood can be bought on site for a very reasonable price. All in all I would thoroughly recommend this campsite and will definitely be returning in the future.
Nicely greater by owners of site and shown to pitch. Facilities are regularly cleaned and kept spotless. Good idea for an adult only field. Great walks and cycle routes which can be accessed straight from site. Very good value for money.
Are first time camping as a family and we all had a great time. The campsite is in a great location and the only noise you can hear is the sheep in the field (a different type of alarm clock). The team where on hand to welcome you, explain where everything was and showed you to your plot. Plots nicely spaced out giving you loads of room so you did not feel on top of the other families. Every thing was clean and tidy. Fire pits a must.
Very nice people. Made to feel very welcome. Real toilets which was a relief, being a novice camper. But the compost toilets were generally kept quite clean. Had washing up liquid, and hand wash provided. Plus antibacterial gel due to Covid19 which was good to see. They did their best to keep campers spread apart as much as possible due to present times which was great! Was very quiet at night, and other campers were very respectful. I have been camping before where I have not had a wink of sleep because of inconsiderate campers drinking until all hours, so I was a little anxious. But I slept really well as by 10pm everyone was practically in bed. Fire pit and logs was £7 which is very reasonable. Would recommend to others. Cleanliness being the most important factor...
Fantastic site, loads of space, really friendly helpful owners.
Well spaced pitches. Immaculately clean facilities, (enough toilets and showers, never had to queue. ) Great location, right on the Cuckoo Trail. Plenty of fire pits for everyone to have one. Magical to see all the fires alight in the evenings as it got dark. Perfect!
Fantastic first time camping experience.
Started with a very, very warm welcome . They used our names when they spoke to us as soon as we came. Very impressed.. Shown to our pitch.immediately. Everything explained and all the outings were mentioned and the write ups were in the washing area. It was our second time camping the first time being two years ago. and it was a first time for my son and his family. Nothing was to much trouble. We decided to get a fire pit at the last moment as we were not familiar with camping. The office was closing but the lady was so helpful she gave us the tray and her husband delivered the logs to us. The price was extremely reasonable as my son had checked other sites and the prices were much more. My daughter in law was worried about toilets and washing up areas when camping but was shocked to find them spotless. All toilet rolls, Antibacterial hand washing soap and antigacterial hand gel was provided.. Enjoyed the campsite. Not to big and very friendly with a personal touch.. The children who were campers were extremely polite. very refreshing in these days. Cannot waiting for our next trip perhaps early next year to the same place. Unfortunately could not express our thanks personally to the family when we left as the office was busy. Thank you for all the family for a very enjoyable camping experience.
Friendly, simple, clean - a lovely campsite
Great for kids, good facilities, very clean, lots of space and in a beautiful setting with great hosts.
Lovely campsite with relaxed atmosphere
We really enjoyed our stay at Fontmills. The campsite had a very relaxed atmosphere and the hosts were very friendly and helpful. We loved having a fire every night and would definitely come back for another stay.
Second visits (was even more of) a charm
Second time I stayed here in the last few weeks. Nicola and Steve were as always warm and welcoming. They were understanding of us arriving the next day due to bad weather. Beautiful views, lots of space, clean and simple facilities, fire pit and wood to hire, good atmosphere and a picnic table! What more could you ask for. Thank you again!
Lovely small site
Had a really nice couple of days at Fontmills and felt well-looked-after by friendly team. Nice open field, not too crowded, fire pits available to borrow, toilets and showers very clean and worked well, washing up area was really useful, hand sanitiser at useful points outside, lots of hot water available (lovely!). Team was very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed the lamb burgers as well :)
Great First Time
This was our first time camping as a family and it was fantastic, the facilities and hosts were great, the pitches are generous as well
Friendly, Simple, Clean Campsite
Thank you for a wonderful stay. We were made to feel welcome and loved the space to play, the clean facilities, the complimentary fire pits, the friendly service and the starry nights. Would highly recommend for any camper who wants good value for money and beautiful surroundings.
Simple, clean and friendly campsite
Thank you for a lovely holiday! We thought your facilities were great and enjoyed the space and simplicity of your campsite very much. The stars were spectacular too!
Brilliant campsite in a beautiful spot with wonderful owners.
We’ve just returned from our fourth year at Fontmills and it’s still our favourite campsite by far. Huge pitches and space for little (and big!) ones to play, spotless facilities that are cleaned regularly throughout the day (love the new, additional composting loos!) and a really relaxed and friendly feel, especially as the sun goes down and the campfires are lit. My children adore “Farmer Steve” and can’t wait to have a chat with him whenever they spot him round the site and they also really appreciated the ice-cream supply on-site. Cuckoo trail is great for cycling days out and it’s lovely to wake to the sound of the sheep on the farm. Couldn’t recommend highly enough.
Peaceful, fantastic hosts
We had an amazing 5 nights here. Their safety precautions for Covid were superb. Huge spaces between tents, sanitiser everywhere. Toilets and showers were spotless. You can ride your bikes directly onto the Cuckoo trail without going on a road. The owners were so welcoming and helpful. Highly recommended!
Kind, clean, and convenient. I can recommend this campsite to anyone who wants to go camping either with their family members, loved ones, or alone.
Friendly, safe and non-cluttered
Booked this site at the last minute and it was perfect for me, my daughter and her friend. Very friendly welcome and very clean and safe environment. The kids enjoyed exploring and toasting marshmallows over an open fire. The site was fully booked, but it there was still plenty of space and Covid-19 measures were clear without being over zealous. The site is close to Hastings, Brighton and Eastbourne for fans of the Anti-nowhere League and days by the sea. Will certainly look to book again.
We (2 adults) had a lovely stay at Fontmills Farm. They had planned very well for the pandemic. They had excellent spacing between pitches, hand sanitiser available throughout the campsite, good signage in communal areas, but also it was a lovely holiday that did not feel over shadowed by the virus. The children on the campsite had good space to run and play but it was also nice and peaceful for adults. Absolutely beautiful setting and very easily reached by public transport. The 51 local bus dropped us off early(!) and picked us up bang on timetabled time. The cuckoo trail is definitely worth bringing you bike for. The showers, sinks, and toilets were very clean. It was amazing to see a composting toilet being used so respectfully and hygienically by all visitors.
What a wonderful place!
We only stayed for one night but I will be back. We received a warm welcome at Fontmills and as we made our way down the field which was stunningly sunlit golden we knew we had made the right choice for a friend’s first time camping. Given plenty of room and a fab fire pit which we lit as the sun set. We were even able to buy marshmellows! And the shops were easily accessible by car to get extras. The toilets and showers were super clean and cared for. It was wonderful to sit under the starry sky with the bright moon rising behind the trees, see all the other campfires and tell ghost stories. Waking early, the sun rise over the field was spectacular and I went for a delightful little morning walk. Fontmills Farm is a special place I have recommended it to friends and family and will definitely return to enjoy more of the walks and adventures the surrounding area has to offer! Thank you!
Great hospitality, clean. Beautiful location. Defo coming again!
A breath of fresh air!
Lovely family run campsite. Very warm welcome when we arrived. Excellent facilities there and totally COVID-proofed. A beautiful part of the country and a brilliant place to stay to make the most of it.
Great 3 nights with my twin boys, great family site.
We arrived and had a warm welcome, easy book in and shown area to pitch the tent. This was at the top end of the field in a corner, which was ideal. With helping hands (5 year old boys) pitched our tent in no time. From then on it was a slow relaxing time for me and a great time for the boys running around. Visiting the beaches (20mins), chasing gulls and watching the fish jump out of the water onto the beach. The tents were well spaced apart, and open fires in iron wok (wood and fire starting kits available on site. The wash up area had a freezer for ice packs and some sockets where some campers were using for mobiles and mobile fridges. There were a good number of toilets, and 2 showers at our end of field, more toilets and showers at bottom of field. Drinking water was via a stand tap. We were very lucky with the weather and although my boys wanted to stay up till dark, by 9pm both fast asleep. In conclusion, the camp site although basic was just what was needed, wished had booked longer, but work commitments did not allow. I believe they will be offering canned drinks as well as the eggs, ice cream and the all important marshmallows. Highly recommended.
The campsite that saved me!
Thank you Steve and Nicola and Fontmills Farm Campsite. I arrived by bike, weighed down with camping equipment just as it was turning dark, as the predicted rain threatened. When Steve met me at the gates, he could not have realised how much I was broken after 130 miles of cycling from North London. I was late, nearly 3 hours after last check in time, but Steve was happy to see me and I think he understood my pain! Nicola had been equally warm on the phone when I checked in with my slow progress. They had saved a spot for me, near the lovely shower area, ready for a quick getaway the following morning at first light. And another 100+ miles on the bike. So this campsite needed to be perfect and it was! So I left at 2nd light, not 1st. How could I leave the wonderfully calm setting after only 10 hours. Nicola was up early giving me detailed directions to the Cuckoo Trail, the bike trail conveniently only a short ride from the site. I had a super hot shower to revive me and couldn’t fail to be impressed by the covid-19 rules and safety procedures. Other campers were lazily rising for a leisurely day which I wouldn’t be getting. And it all seemed relaxed, calm, quiet and chilled. If only I didn’t need to be at a Dover campsite by 7pm; that site was less relaxed(i.e stressed) that I missed their 7pm check in time by 15 minutes. Despite the website saying 8pm!! Fontmills in comparison had a very informative website and always answered my calls prior to my visit. So thank you again, I will return with my wife and children to truly benefit from the site and hospitality on offer. My 10 hours on site included 6 well needed hours of sleep and most importantly, set me up to complete my charity bike ride and raise nearly £5000. I will be back but next time, will leave the bike at home!

Beautiful stay at this super friendly site!
My 11 year old daughter and I have just returned from an impromptu night’s stay at Fontmills Farm Campsite and I have to say that it was excellent. The owners (I rudely never did ask for their names) were extremely helpful, friendly and kind. They literally couldn’t have made us feel any more welcome. The site itself is quiet, beautiful with lovely views across meadows and there is plenty of space. Whilst everything on site is kept deliberately simple (which is what we wanted), the facilities are excellent, functional and extremely clean. Last night we enjoyed looking at the stars, whilst the complimentary fire pit provided us with warmth and the opportunity to indulge in some toasted marshmallows. We bought a bag of logs and a fire starting pack (kindling, matches paper) which cost in total a very reasonable £7.00 I can’t recommend this place enough and we shall look forward to returning in the not too distance future. Thanks once again. Colin and Millie

Thank you for the lovely review Colin and Millie. So pleased you had a great time and enjoyed the sleeping under the stars. See you again, Nicola and Steve :)
Very friendly, relaxed, Cuckoo trail is great
Very nice owners. Great to have fire pit for free and logs for a reasonable price. Loos very clean. Very Covid-19 aware though not paranoid. The cycling along the Cuckoo trail is great. It's in a beautiful part of East Sussex. All good, basically.

Thank you for the kind review Graham - we look forward to seeing you again! Nicola and Steve :)
Very friendly campsite with great facilities
Lovely campsite in a great location. Strikes a nice balance between feeling like proper back-to-basics camping but the toilets and showers are actually really nice, and there's even a fridge in the wee kitchen / washing up area. Plenty of space, and nice views over the fields. The owners are really friendly and helpful. Good location for walking.
Lovely campsite, everything spotlessly clean. Nicola and Steve were great and welcoming hosts. Beautiful views and plenty nearby to do. Thoroughly recommend it.
Beautiful Claean Campsite with Friendly Owners
We have just stayed at Fontmills Campsite as a group of three mums with our children. We all had a lovely time. The campsite is great with clean facilities and that always helpful communal fridge and freezer. The owners are really nice people. Steve lend me his jump leads when the kids ran down my car battery with their phones!! And my daughter and her friend had a great time helping Nicola with the shetland ponies. Also the fire pits were free of charge and the wood we bought was a generous large bag with firelighters, kindling, newspaper and matches! Gorgeous countryside with the Cuckoo Trail right beside the farm. Perfect!
Nicola and Steve are the perfect hosts. Made us feel very welcome on arrival. The camp facilities are top class. Wood deliveries every evening for your camp fire! We had a brilliant time!
Very warm and friendly owners and great facilities
A small, friendly campsite ideal for families with good facilities.
We stayed two nights with a family of five in our own campervan + tent. Lots of space to play for the kids as there was an open field, nice view and there were sheep, our boys loved it! The owners were friendly, the showers and wash up- spaces were clean. I would definitely recommend this campsite!
We are a family of 5 and we recently stayed 2 nights in a furnished bell tent. The owners were fantastic, they came round to see how they could help but not too in your face. The furnished bell tent was a real treat with everything you needed (although note you need your own matches and skewers for marshmallows) and a VERY comfy bed. There was a such a lovely atmosphere on the site into the evening, campfires all around, guitars playing and the sound of children playing, a very family orientated campsite. All tents were around the edge, none in the middle, meaning children had plenty of space to play. Hoorah! The showers and toilets were very clean and lots of hot water. There were queues now and again, but you didn't have to wait long. There are two fridges you can use and a mobile phone charging point and a couple of sinks with washing up bits and bobs. Aces. There are some beautiful places to visit nearby and this is a 5minute walk to the cuckoo trail. We will definitely be visiting again. A gem of a campsite!
What a lovely camp site. Spent the weekend here with friends, lovely friendly welcome on arrival, great access to the cuckoo trail - cycles to Eastbourne & back. Campsite brilliant well thought out little touches including fridge, washing up liquid, t-towels - couldn’t fault it. Will definitely be coming back.
Spacious, quiet, well run
Great for kids, with lots of space between the tents and clean facilities. We had a pre pitched bell tent, capacious for a family of four. Genuinely traffic free access to the cycling path with options north and south. Would go again.
Brilliant place for our first ever camping trip last summer
We stayed here in June 2017 and had a brilliant time. Kids loved it and lots of space for them to run around and ride their bikes. We explored the Cuckoo trail so well worth taking bikes. The biggest difference between this and other campsites we stayed at last summer was how spotlessly clean the Kitchen, WC's and showers were. Steve and Nicola the owners were constantly around to keep these areas clean and tidy. We can't wait to go go back in 2018.
Response from Fontmills Farm Campsite
Thank you so much for your kind review - we look forward so being you again soon! Nicola and Steve :)
Fantastic view & location
The location and view are fantastic. There is no car noise. Easy, safe access to the Cuckoo Trail. Very friendly helpful owners. Modern clean facilities. They allow camp fires. Large pitches, plenty of space. And some picnic tables.

Perfect first camping trip with little one
We recently stayed over the bank holiday weekend. It was our first camping trip as a little family of 3. It had a really lovely relaxed atmosphere, clean toilets, hot showers, washing up facilities and a fridge freezer! Steve and Nicola were really friendly and helpful, Steve came round every night with wood and kindling for an open fire pit. Our little one enjoyed seeing the sheep, horses and walking down to the cuckoo trail looking for sticks. It was a lovely weekend.

Thank you for the great review, we hope to see you again soon! Nicola and Steve :)
Four of us stayed over the August bank holiday and we'd prefer it if no one else knew about this gorgeous little spot but sadly we don't think it can be kept a secret for long.
Not long opened, this working farm is a great location for so much in the area and hosts Nicola and Steve couldn't do enough for their guests. Great facilities including a very useful fridge for campers!
Thanks for a lovely friendly stay with nice spacious pitches and free fire pits to use! We had a lovely time and will come again.

Hi Sanda, thank you for the lovely review! Nicola and Steve :)
A lovely break at Fontmill's Farm
This was our first proper camping holiday since purchasing our new tent earlier this year. We have a daughter of nine and a son on seven and all four of us enjoyed every minute of our stay at Fontmill's Farm. From our initial contact with Nicola when booking the holiday right up to the day we left was perfect. We only live 30 minutes away, but still found plenty to do that we hadn't discovered before. All facilities at the site were excellent, lovely hot powerful showers, well equipped kitchen area with fridge and freezer space and proper flush toilets and all of these immaculately clean. The family were very friendly and helpful and the kids loved Floss the dog and the horses. We would definitely visit again and recommend to all.
A big thank you from Lee, Katie, Ruby and Archie
