Fontmills Farm Campsite
Fontmills Farm Campsite, North Street, Hellingly, East Sussex BN27 4EB
A wonderfully non-commercial feel, with only horses as your neighbours.
It’s between Horam and Hailsham that the trail, named because the first cuckoo of spring was traditionally released from a cage at Heathfield Fair, trundles through fields thronged with cow parsley and buttercups. As the river coils away from the route, cyclists too can turn, in the opposite direction, and mosey down a single-lane track to Fontmill Farm - home to the area’s most unassuming little campsite.
'Little' is perhaps a misleading word to use. The camping meadow itself is a pleasing 20 acres and part of the a larger 140 acre farm, but Fontmill’s conscious restriction to maintain just 25 non-electrified pitches means any large-scale feel is carefully avoided. Instead, there’s a wonderfully non-commercial vibe to the place, with only horses as your neighbours, leaning obtrusively over the wooden fence in search of campers who’ll scratch their noses.
Facilities are simple yet spotless, with a communal shower block, two proper flushing loos and an area for washing dishes, while owners Steve and Nicola are long standing owners of the farm and a well-spring of local knowledge. On arrival they’ll happily wave you into the field, where campers can drive to their pitch and make themselves at home, but after that vehicles are restricted to the designated parking area, resulting in a wonderfully safe, car-free campsite where kids can run wild.
Not that this means you’ll have to pedal everywhere back on the old railway. It’s an easy drive to some of the main attractions, with the beaches of Eastbourne and the commanding white cliffs of the Sussex Heritage Coast just 20 minutes or so away. The nearby A267 leaves it all wonderfully accessible and whether you’re a culture vulture looking for Herstmonceux Castle and the 1066 trail or walkers with an eye on the nearby South Downs, Fontmill Farm is certainly a handy base. When you get back in the evening you still have the pleasures of an open campfire and in the morning fresh farm eggs for breakfast. Perfect.

Fantastic view & location
The location and view are fantastic. There is no car noise. Easy, safe access to the Cuckoo Trail. Very friendly helpful owners. Modern clean facilities. They allow camp fires. Large pitches, plenty of space. And some picnic tables.
Perfect first camping trip with little one
We recently stayed over the bank holiday weekend. It was our first camping trip as a little family of 3. It had a really lovely relaxed atmosphere, clean toilets, hot showers, washing up facilities and a fridge freezer! Steve and Nicola were really friendly and helpful, Steve came round every night with wood and kindling for an open fire pit. Our little one enjoyed seeing the sheep, horses and walking down to the cuckoo trail looking for sticks. It was a lovely weekend.
Four of us stayed over the August bank holiday and we'd prefer it if no one else knew about this gorgeous little spot but sadly we don't think it can be kept a secret for long.
Not long opened, this working farm is a great location for so much in the area and hosts Nicola and Steve couldn't do enough for their guests. Great facilities including a very useful fridge for campers!
Thanks for a lovely friendly stay with nice spacious pitches and free fire pits to use! We had a lovely time and will come again.
A lovely break at Fontmill's Farm
This was our first proper camping holiday since purchasing our new tent earlier this year. We have a daughter of nine and a son on seven and all four of us enjoyed every minute of our stay at Fontmill's Farm. From our initial contact with Nicola when booking the holiday right up to the day we left was perfect. We only live 30 minutes away, but still found plenty to do that we hadn't discovered before. All facilities at the site were excellent, lovely hot powerful showers, well equipped kitchen area with fridge and freezer space and proper flush toilets and all of these immaculately clean. The family were very friendly and helpful and the kids loved Floss the dog and the horses. We would definitely visit again and recommend to all.
A big thank you from Lee, Katie, Ruby and Archie
