Swallows Oast Glamping

Swallows Oast Farm, Park Lane, Whatlington, East Sussex TN33 0NR

Exclusive glamping with history at every turn and wild deer and boar in the bordering forest.

After the most famous land battle in British history and the subsequent clubbing about the head of the then King of England, the most logical next step for William the Conqueror was to build a ginormous Abbey. And so it is that the now partially ruined elegance of Battle Abbey presides over its namesake town, a must-see history stop on your way to the Sussex coastline. If they’d never called the place ‘Battle’ they may have gone with the equally imaginative, ‘Town’, ‘Pleasant Shops’ or ‘Historic Spot’, but Battle does the job and today it’s certainly the reason folks flock here on their tours.

Just three miles away Swallows Oast Glamping is another practically named gem in the fields of beautiful Swallows Oast Farm. Here glamping is very much on the small and personal scale, with just one individual safari tent tucked up against a bank of woodland on the edge of a meadow. Traditionally styled in khaki green, the canvas seems to blend into the agricultural backdrop, but within the pristine interior offers something more than its off-grid appearance suggests. Stylishly light wooden furnishings fit the scene perfectly and house smart self-catering-type utilities like a sink with hot and cold running water, a four-hob gas stove and a collection of all the utensils and crockery you’ll need. Outside, meanwhile, an adjacent cabin houses the toilet and shower facilities – thoughtfully ordained with cute bottles of toiletries.

Though the accommodation and the exclusive feel of being the sole occupants of the fields (minus the horses, sheep and chickens) is difficult to knock, it’s the location that really makes Swallows Oast Glamping so special. In the opposite direction from Battle, it takes less than 10 minutes to drive to Bodiam Castle (a long but picturesque walk if you fancy it), where a wide, flooded moat, and picture perfect turrets make it one of the most archetypal looking castles in the country. Inside, the steep spiral staircases that take you to the tops are a serious leg tester but make for an ideal justification when you get to nearby Hastings, home to reputedly the best fish and chips in the UK. There’s also a good butchers a few hundred meters away from Hastings Castle – perfect if you’re aching to get back to seclusion and barbecue a few sausages on the safari tent campfire.
