A natural spot for every kind of camper.

Once upon a time, Rivendale was an upland farm, before morphing (with a little help from human hands) into a massive industrial quarry. When this was closed down, nature began to reclaim the site, until the wild brambles were cleared away to finish its metamorphosis into today’s campsite – a perfect balance between the man-made and the natural.

Spread over 37 acres and dotted with limestone farm buildings, this pretty and well-manicured site sits on a hillside overlooking Eaton and Alsop Dales, offering pitches for campers, as well as timber yurts and pods for glampers. Boasting numerous awards for conservation, it’s a very leafy, natural site, with ponds, thousands of trees, and an abundance of flora and fauna.

The grass pitches within the main camping area are generous and enjoy a sheltered location thanks to the horseshoe-shaped quarry walls on the north, east, and west sides – and by a wooded bank on the south side.

No-frills campers have the magical option of pitching in a separate 10-acre meadow amid orchids and other wild flowers, or taking an isolated pitch perched on the hillside overlooking stunning Eaton Dale.

Well organised, attractive, very friendly, beer/coffee selling and very pleasant site - with good wifi.  The staff work hard to ensure it remains both intimate and environmentally friendly, even though it is a large and busy site.  On hot days, it may get a little dusty, given it is an old quarry, and the views are also a little constrained by the quarry walls, but its a lovely place and a good base.

Well organised campsite set in a fantastic location for exploring the peak district (just a 10 minute drive from Dovedale and a handful of great little villages such as Hartington. The site has all the facilities you could want including a nice little bar with good ales on tap!

The Campsite advertises a wild camping field which offers more basic, natural camping but still with the same access to all the facilities, just at a greater walk. This is where I stayed as I wanted to have a bit more space and have the fun of wild camping but still be able to use some basic facilities. It was a little smaller than I imagined however, and the filed was pretty full meaning the pitch wasn't as private as I would have hoped for.It was also full of young families, which isn't a problem as such but did detract from the feeling of wild camping. I guess that is what you get when you book during school holidays though. Although clean inside, the toilet and shower block for the wild camping pitches, very badly smelled from the outside, making any walk past this area (which was necessary every day as it is by the entrance / exit to the camping area) a very unpleasant experience. I think this was due to an underground sewage tank. As said, the facilities themselves were clean and what you would expect from a campsite toilet/shower block this meant they were not nice to use / walk past.

Overall, the campsite had some great facilities (apart from the horrible smell outside the wild camping toilet block) and is set in a great location, however if you are planning on going to the campsite for the thrills of a wild camping experience but with the bonus of modern facilities, then you may be a bit disappointed, certainly if you are booking during school holidays. I would instead suggest this is more suitable for families looking for a more basic camping experience.
