Cheap and cheerful, back-to-basics camping in a family field with the river only a short walk away

With plenty of room for the kids to roam, this back-to-basics camping on a family-only field has great views thrown in. A short walk downhill and you’re by the river, with its small weirs and shallow pools for splashing in. As long as they’ve got space to run around in, the kids probably won’t need much more than this. And it’s a pretty safe bet that there’ll be plenty of playmates on hand. The field has lots of room for ball games, and the small wooded area separating the family field from its neighbour is good for hide-andseek. A rope-tyre swing hanging from a tree completes the low-key play facilities.

Although the kids probably won’t appreciate this, you are pitched just a couple of fields away from the spectacular limestone gorge of Lathkill Dale – the far end of the field has the best views. What they probably will appreciate is that the site is a short (although steep) walk from the river, where the series of weirs and pools make great wet-play areas. This area is also a haven for wildlife – Lathkill Dale is one of the five valleys making up the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve. Look out for dippers hopping in and out of the river, and see how many different kinds of butterfly you can spot.

Nearby attractions
A short, but sometimes steep and rocky, path walk takes you down to Lathkill Dale, where you take a left along the river to reach the first of a number of small weirs and shallow pools; perfect for paddling and splashing around in.
Food and drink

Two good pubs are about 2 miles in either direction. Traditional pub food can be had at the Bull’s Head (01629 812372) in Monyash, which is right next door to the village green and (more importantly) the excellent village playground, which caters for tots to teens and even has equipment adapted for kids with special needs. In the opposite direction, the Lathkil Hotel at Over Haddon (01629 812501) has food with a view, including yummy puds.
