Refreshingly understated private camping in the unspoiled Northumberland countryside

There's no denying Walkmill is a bit special. If ever a campsite fitted the Cool Camping criteria, then surely this hidden pocket of Northumberland is it. So how did we come to this conclusion? A good question, and it involves plenty of unquantifiable notional nonsense like ‘atmosphere’ and ‘vibe’. Then there’s the all-important location, and this is perhaps the most important box to be ticked. Thankfully Walkmill is set in 10 acres of beautiful countryside, surrounded by idyllic woodlands and the weaving River Coquet, where canvas companions fall asleep to the sound of its lazy, trickling flow. Interested? We thought so.

‘We promote camping in a natural, non-commercial environment’ is how owner Claire describes Walkmill; and given the site’s pleasing lack of evening entertainment and plastic playgrounds, we think that’s a fitting description. The riverside pitches have vast amounts of space, shared only with the lambs and sheep at selected times of the year (though, sadly, due to fishing rules, access to the water isn’t permitted), giving these spots a real sense of ‘wild camping’. However, if you don’t fancy the midnight toilet trek, you can hire your own portable toilet! The main facilities are always clean and tidy, with many enjoying a ‘proper’ bathroom, located in the site's mobile home, which also doubles up as an information centre.

And when you finally tire of Walkmill (if you ever do, that is), the wild and remote Northumberland coast is right on your doorstep. Stretching 64 miles north of Newcastle up to the Scottish border, this dramatic landscape is loaded with impressive sights. Here you’ll find the Elizabethan ramparts surrounding picturesque Berwick-upon-Tweed, the sturdy fortresses at Bamburgh, Warkworth and Alnwick, and delightful villages strung along miles of wide, sandy beaches that you just might have all to yourself.

A real attraction is Walkmill’s abundance of wildlife, both on land and in the river. Swans, otters, herons and kingfishers lounge lazily by the riverbank; kestrels, buzzards and owls dominate the skies; while sharp-eyed campers have also spotted the odd badger. But Walkmill’s greatest asset may well be the space – not just the physical kind but that all important head-space too. This is a spot for a little camping freedom and it does a world of good for anyone looking to unwind.

Walkmill’s static caravan acts as an info centre and bathroom, with a hot shower, bath and 2 toilets. There are 2 further toilets located adjacent to the caravan. Use of the kitchen’s sinks, microwave, fridge-freezer and kettle is permitted. Firepits available for hire.

Suitable For

Tents, caravans, motorhomes, campervans, kids, and well-behaved dogs – yes.

From the top of the private farm track it's a pleasant 30 minute walk to Warkworth Castle (01665 711423). The impressive cross-shaped keep, rising above the River Coquet, dominates one of the strongest fortresses in England. It presides over the remains of a great hall, chapel, fine gatehouse and a virtually intact circuit of towered walls. Half a mile from the castle and accessible only by boat, stands a late medieval cave. Overshadowed by trees on the north bank of the River Coquet, Warkworth Hermitage is part of the Manor of Warkworth, built as a chantry chapel during the period 1332-49. Bicycles can be hired from Breeze Bikes (01665 710323) in Amble, whilst surf schools (with private lessons), coasteering and kitesurfing can all be experienced a little further up the coast. Further afield, historic Alnwick with its galleries, garden, Bailiffgate Museum (01665 605847) and magnificent castle (01665 511100), is eight miles (20 minutes' drive) away.

Food & Drink

Know your Knickerbocker from your Neapolitan? Then you’ll love Spurelli (01665 710890); a boutique ice-cream makers in nearby Amble. Located within The Old Chandlery, customers can stay and watch the world go by from the outside seating area. Take a tour around the ‘Town Trail’ and discover Amble’s hidden secrets as well as searching out bargains at the town’s Sunday market. The fish stalls sell wonderfully fresh seafood at good prices, whilst the Cumberland sausages from the butchers are also popular with the locals. Small convenience stores are found in Amble and there are two larger supermarkets in Alnwick, 15 minutes away.

Easter–end of September, however bookings are sometimes accepted at other times of the year if required.

Fantastic camp here in September

Camped for 3 nights here mid week 2nd week of September. Pitches well spaced and site quite quiet. The showers & toilets were all very clean and well maintained & the shop was a godsend as the weather turned very hot so was able to buy bottles of chilled water. Met some lovely other campers too who were all very friendly and easy to get on with. Loved my time there and can't wait to go back next year. Hopefully the owner will extend their season into October or even November by then.

Lovely quiet site

Lovely quiet site for relaxing, owners very helpful and welcoming, clean facilities and nice little touch to hire fire pits! 😎

Beautiful secluded site

Beautiful and peaceful campsite hidden away in the Northumberland countryside. We only stayed one night as we were walking on up the Coast Path but Claire was really helpful and ready to do anything to make our stay enjoyable

Beautiful site in a stunning area

Great site, really good size pitches and well maintained facilities. Claire and Nick are really lovely and very welcoming, the communication from first booking Oct 2020, which was cancelled due to pandemic, to rebooking this year was really easy. Thank you for providing a perfect setting xxxx

Lovely, peaceful site with clean facilities

Spent two nights here and loved the tranquility of the site. Also the well thought out and well maintained facilities. Great to have use of a fridge freezer and the bathroom felt like luxury. Lots of hot water for the shower and everything was kept really clean. The shop was useful too. The owners have thought of everything and make sure you have a comfortable stay. The location is brilliant, so much to see and do close by. Would definitely recommend and hope to be back in the future :-D

Quiet campsite in great location

Stayed for 6 nights in this great campsite. It has a relaxed feel and is very quiet as there are only about 10 tent pitches, although there are camper vans in the upper field. Claire, the owner, was on hand and very friendly/helpful. We liked the generous size of the pitches, although they are in a line in a square field which is perhaps a less pretty landscape than other favourite campsites but the owner can’t do much about that! Also loved the little shop with the honesty box for milk etc. Plus the sound of the owls. The facilities were very clean and well maintained. The only thing we didn’t like was there was only 1 shower and on a couple of occasions we had to queue for about 20-30 mins to use it. I think people stayed in a long time because it also had the only sink for cleaning teeth and washing your face (there was another one in one of the loos but it was tiny). That aside, lovely campsite and great location for exploring Northumberland. Recommended.

Lovely area but no real view from pitch

Best things were it's a pretty quiet and considerate site, facilities were very clean and well looked after. Downside, we're suckers for a good view while we sit down in the evening or have our coffee in the morning but unfortunately all we could see was long grass or other campers. We knew the river wasn't accessible but assumed we'd be able to see it at least. Bit of a shame as other places we've stayed have had some stunning views which is what camping is about for us. Also got a bit stung with extra charges for hiring a fire pit on top of the cost of logs it really adds up on a long visit.

Peaceful,spacious and clean.

Our pitch was perfect, plenty of space for our 10 night stay. We saw herons, buzzards and sparrow hawks. We heard the owls at night and the stars were very clear. The amenities were clean and rarely crowded. It was nice to have fresh milk, meat and a homemade cake if we fancied from their honesty box shop 😊. We would definitely visit again.

A perfect quiet site!

We were blown away with this peaceful site. It was well kept, the pitches were an excellent size, the facilities as stated and very clean. Both the owners and other campers were delightful. We will be back!

Beautiful and quiet campsite

One of my favourite campsites:clean and quiet. A gorgeous site with long grass and huge trees. Enjoyed watching the bats and barn owl in the evening. Good facilities as well, hot water, can charge phones and fridge.

Non-commercial gorgeousness!

Lovely owners! Beautiful clean site and a fridge! The sounds and sites of nature were all around me... I'll definitely be back!

A beautiful campsite

Such a lovely spot, in a beautiful part of the world. A lovely campsite, great peaceful atmosphere. Lovely clean facilities. Very helpful and pleasant owners. Would highly recommend.

Peace, space and wonderful dark skies

A true retreat from our busy lives. We loved the generous space between pitches and the lack of clutter/lighting/signs etc which spoil so many sites. We enjoyed a warm welcome, very clean loos, the best eggs in Northumberland and a chorus of owls in the evening. Cycling over to the Alnwick Garden and walking to Warkworth Castle were both alot of fun. A wonderful place, and we'll definitely be back.

Wonderful quiet uncrowded site in river setting

We loved our stay at Walkmill campsite. Beautiful setting close to the Coquet river with large pitches. Clare and Nick were very welcoming and friendly. Fires are allowed (you can hire a fire pit) off the ground which makes for a wonderful experience sitting out in the evenings listening to the birdsong. The facilities are very clean. Local fresh produce is on sale with an honesty box. During our stay, we walked to the lovely village of Warkworth and also kayaked from Amble to Walkworth which was wonderful (no access to river from site). This was our first venture to the area and we would highly recommend this site and are looking forward to planning our next visit..

A delightful stay in a beautiful, peaceful setting.

Walkmill campsite is a great place to stay. It’s set within quiet, picturesque fields with plenty of space and a friendly, warm atmosphere. The electric pitches are set in the top field by the facilities and the campers are down by the river bank. Facilities are well organised with the opportunity to hire a fire pit or pop to the shop for farm fresh bacon or eggs! Its hosts, Clare and Nick are friendly and helpful and great care is taken to welcome and look after all visitors. During our stay, we cycled to Alnmouth and back for coffee, met up with family in the lovely village of Warkworth and stopped for fish and chips in Amble at the Harbour Fish Bar - well worth the queueing! We would highly recommend the site and are looking forward to returning in a few weeks.

Peaceful getaway

Friendly welcome at this gorgeous campsite. My pitch was by the river and all you could hear was the flowing water and birds singing. All the facilities were clean and laid out well and the grounds were neat and tidy with obvious markings for each pitch. A great place from which to explore, will definitely recommend to others.

Response from Walkmill Campsite

Thank you Sally-anne, delighted you enjoyed your stay. The birds are certainly vocal at this time of year which is lovely to hear.

Brilliant 3 days

On arrival we was met by Clare and shown around and our place to set up, we was in a nice quiet part and it was nice and peaceful, although parts was not open we was very comfortable and settled in nicely. We was here for 3 nights and was able to visit Amble, Warkworth, and Rothley all nice and interesting places with friendly people, we hope to return in the near future to visit more places within the region highly recommend

Long awaited peaceful break

Our visit was postponed from last April so was eagerly anticipated. We were greeted by Claire, who was very helpful and welcoming. Our pitch was very spacious on the bank of Couqet River. We had a very peaceful 4 days camping on well layed out site. Which is ideally located for visiting many of the jewels of Northumberland. We will come back to Walkmill Campsite again and again.

Wild, but with a few home comforts. Idylic!

I don't think I've ever camped in such a beautiful spot. The pitches are large and as we chose the bottom of the field there was hardly a sign of anyone else nearby. I could have looked at the view forever: mature trees lining the banks of the River Coquet, gradually putting on their autumn display, along with a herd of friendly sheep who regularly visited a couple of times a day (not too close though :-)). The amazing starry skies we experienced throughout the week were ample payback for a few cold nights. We were also fortunate to experience a full moon which added to the magic. Fire pits and logs were available and whilst adding atmosphere, helped to extend the evenings as we were camping towards the end of the season. The facilities were perfectly fine, even with Covid measures in place. We didn't use the kitchen much but the indoor toilets and bathrooom gave a welcome change from when a flannel and a bowl in the tent just weren't quite enough! The water was hot and plentiful. The two additional outdoor loos were prettified with charming little window boxes which added a nice touch. We would definitely go back. Thanks for a welcome break.

Response from Walkmill Campsite

Thank you Fiona, delighted you enjoyed your stay and the end of season lawnmowers didn't interfere with your visit!

One of the best campsites I've stayed at for years

This is such a great campsite I. So many ways, it's very laid-back, the owners are very welcoming the facilities are great, (static caravan with good kitchen, place to charge phones, AND A BATH AND SHOWER. the pitches are well spaced around the edge of the large fields, it feels very private and therefore very quiet. It's also very sheltered, we were unaware of the stormy weather in Amble. Great to hire a fire pit, can't actually fault this campsite, it's just great, will definitely stay again.

Lovely location , well spaced out pitches...

Location was lovely...Peaceful and lovely countryside...walk into Warksworth was nice - about 35 minutes....Only quibble was the 1 shower - not really enough for the site....

Beautiful and peaceful

A lovely, peaceful campsite with plenty of space between adjacent pitches. Owners very friendly and accommodating, with clean facilities. Would definitely stay here again!

A tranquil getaway

A friend and I spent 1 night at Walkmill, with my dog, just for a weekend getaway from Newcastle (40 mins away). We were very impressed at how spacious and peaceful the site was. We hired one of the site's fire pits and spent a relaxing evening watching the sun go down over the sheep fields and chatting by an open fire. The toilet facilities were clean at all times and good social distancing and hygiene procedures were in place.

We loved Walkmill campsite. A beautiful placed in the middle of the countryside. Firepits available for the evenings. Friendly, helpful owners! Can't wait to go back.

Peaceful, beautiful site

Walkmill is beautiful, such a large site with few pitches, they have reduced capacity to observe social distancing and it works brilliantly. The facilities are limited but options to hire portaloos for each pitch. Loved having an open fire, listening to the sound of the trees and the water. While the rest of the UK was under water, Walkmill was bright, sunny and peaceful, we will definitely go back. Highlight of our trip up north. Love the beaches, the water, the streams, the landscape.

Spacious, quiet and clean!

The campsite is really well spaced out with good facilities. It is a peaceful campsite that is quite remote. We were a bit daunted about using the porta potti we hired from the campsite but it worked well and was very convenient. It is a lovely part of the world to explore.

Splendid isolation and views

As a returning campervan, we booked direct with the site on the day overnight 'unlocking' of England was confirmed as we could not think of a nicer place to down our first nights away since March. Check in was efficient and reassuring. Great Covid-secure measures in place. Loads of sprays and held available, one way routes and distanced queuing ...not that you'll queue much here. The site itself looks stunning this year, with pathways down into the meadow to the well spaced riverside tent pitches. Walkworth vilage, a comfortable and quiet walk away is openning up, as is Amble harbour, a little further away, but still an easy walk. It's no wonder that pitches here have quickly filled for the summer, but an Autumn trip looks very attractive!

Response from Walkmill Campsite

Thank you, delighted you enjoyed your stay. Hope to see you again in the Autumn.

What a experience it was it was much easier when younger

The privacy was great and the people who run the place were very helpful

Beautiful peaceful rural campsite

Loved camping here, so quiet, fabulous stars on a clear night as no light pollution! Big pitches and very friendly. Handy to have a use of a kettle and microwave and although facilities are limited with just 1 bathroom, the option of a bath is rare in a campsite. We'll definitely camp here again. Great location for exploring Northumberland.

Lovely peaceful site, idyllic location, close to the lovely Warkworth and great base for exploring Northumberlands many delights. Facilities are limited but that is made clear on web and are fine if you are clever with them (shower at quieter times etc). Pitches are very spacious and can hear the river from the tent. Our kiddies (3 & 5) had a wonderful time and made some lovely friends. Had the sight of 3 young hares frolicking on our first evening whilst having dinner! Super spot

Peaceful, scenic and an excellent host!

Lovely to be able to camp in such a beautiful location with minimal but excellent facilities. Very well priced for those of us who do not want the noise and crowds but do have young children. A bath for the sandy exhausted little one in our group was much appreciated before bed. The home from home feel of it was great. Claire quietly keeps a constant and considerate eye over everything so that everyone is happy. The river is tantalizingly close but sadly is not owned by the site and is out of bounds. However this possibly keeps the site quiet and restful. Excellent stay! We will be back. Thank you Claire.

Peaceful camping

Lovely 3 days in amongst the long meadow grass listening to the river and trees. Herons, swans, ducks and owls. Lots to do nearby and super hosts.

Beautiful meadow and birdsong

We stayed here for a week a couple of years ago. This visit was a brief one nighter, but the site - which was already lovely is maturing into a fantastic wild flower meadow. The pitches are roomy, so our children could run about without interfering with the peace of other campers. And it was lovely to be surrounded by the bird song, bats, trees and wildflowers.

Quiet and a little rustic

Peaceful and out of the way down by the River Coquet. Pitches were fine and the use of the fridge was appreciated. With four days of mixed weather a better shower facility would be helpful. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful site

The site was beautiful. The large tent pitches are situated next to the river and, although there is no access, we were able to sit in the evening and listen to the river and the birds. The site is just a short drive to Warkworth and Amble and was easy to get to. Would definitely stay again!

Lovely quiet site, large pitch. Caravan and outside Loo’s were fine, the kids enjoyed being able to watch a movie before bed in the caravan. Able to use the washing up facilities, microwave, kettle, shower. We would book again and recommend to others. Loved seeing the sheep in the camping field 😂

Peaceful Campsite

Spacious pitch and peaceful site. Great for spotting wildlife and using as a base for exploring the Northumberland coast and attractions. Only one shower in the useful static caravan being the only downside, especially if the site is busy. Will visit again.

Peaceful family trip

We stayed here for a weekend camping trip in July. Firstly, the site is just beautiful. The pitches are large and situated next to the river (although you can't access the river due to the fishing rights). During our stay it was very peaceful with excellent weather. In many ways my perfect site. Off the beaten track and quite small. There was no excessive noise from our fellow campers and tonnes of room for the kids to play around in. There is a static caravan which houses most of the facilities (and two outdoor shed toilets). The queue for showers in the morning was long but if you're willing just to wait a little or go at non peak times its absolutely fine. There's a bath which can be used for smaller kids. Warkworth is about a 10 minute drive and Amble (the closest supermarkets) is about 15 minutes. Lots of lovely walks in the area. I hope to return for another sunny weekend soon.

Fabulous quiet campsite.

What a lovely 2 nights stay. Claire the owner was lovely and made us feel welcome instantly on arrival. Idyllic location surrounded by farm land sheep, cows and by the river perfect setting. The facilities were great, the caravan was a lovely addition especially to get out of the hot Sun for a while. With games and lots of local info at hand. The £1 extra for a fab shower was an added bonus especially in the sticky heat. Myself husband and children all had a fab time, just a shame we didn't stay longer. Will be back soon.

Lovely, peaceful campsite near the coast

Would really recommend Walkmill, only a few miles from Warkworth and the beach, but far enough to be quiet and peaceful. Communal facilities (fridge and freezer, toilets, shower, sink and washing up facilities) were clean and great, especially enjoyed the fire pit which we hired for the night for £3 (plus a bit for wood). The owners were away, but their parents were really helpful :)

Fantastic site, cant wait to return.

This is a super relaxed site in a beautiful location just above the river Coquet. The site is very spacious, so at times we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves and the sheep. There are just the right amount of facilities, toilets, shower and kitchen. The village of Warkworth a short drive away has plenty of places to eat and shop, and there's lots to do in the surrounding area. This really is a get away from it all site and we will definitely be back.

Great friendly campsite

Just returned from a weekend at Walkmill. Great site, well looked after. Good sized pitches. Facilities in static caravan on site include use of kitchen, fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle etc. Nice seating are inside with tv, if you need it. Bathroom facilities include a bath! Very clean. Would recommend and will return. Short distance to Warkworth, plenty other scenic places to visit within reasonable travel time.

Lovely site

We stayed here on Easter weekend and despite the campsite being full and having lots of families staying you never felt like you were on a full campsite. The tent pitches are big and in one row with a hill between the caravans and tents so you feel like you have plenty of space. Nice and easy walk into Warkworth and good facilities. Will definitely stay again. So nice to go to a campsite which isn't too commercial.

Lovely Peaceful Spot

Walkmill had a lovely friendly vibe. We visited in August so it was peak time. There were 3 distinct areas - the top field by the farmhouse (caravans and campervans with hook up), a bottom field of tents and the circle field with only four tents or campervans. Although the site was busy, each area is quite distinct and there is loads of extra space in the field for running around, walking the dog, flying a kite etc. At first we felt the facilities were a bit limited (one one shower / bathroom for the whole campsite - and that room also contained one of the 4 loos and 2 basins). But everyone staying on the campsite was very considerate, nobody was in a rush and it's no problem to have a shower at quieter times. My teenage son was delighted to find a chair, table, socket and mobile phone signal in the mobile home! Warkworth and Amble are attractive little towns with lots of independent shops and good places to eat. We had a stand-up paddle boarding lesson on the River Coquet with Jon at Northside Surf School, which the whole family thoroughly enjoyed. We had our bikes and cycled in to Warkworth over the footbridge one day - it would be quite a long walk, but an easy bike ride. The beaches are all fabulous in Northumberland, so much quieter than Cornwall or Deven and a lot easier and cheaper to park. We would thoroughly recommend Northumberland as a destination and Walkmill as a really lovely place to stay.

Fantastic Settings

Where do i start? I was recommeded to this little site by a friend who previously happened upon it. I live not too far from this site and having bought a new caravan decided to try it out for a few nights. I called in when passing to have a look around and to book a pitch. I was met by the owners whom were a lovely friendly couple, I was shown around and was impressed by the tranquility and the setting. The site is surrounded by hills and trees and is accessed by a small track from a road which is easy to find.  I enjoyed the fact the site was run by a couple, family orientated and not commercially orientated. The site is well kept, with all the facilities you could need including toilets, hot shower, electric if you require it and access to fishing. We went out for a meal in the local village on our first night, when we came back it was an awesome experience to see the stars without the interruption of street lighting and light pollution. I wished we had brought a telescope. A peaceful nights sleep, a trickling river in the background, my partner a great fan of owls was entertained by a hooting owl on our second night. We would thoroughly recommend this site to anyone wanting a quiet, no nonsense, break-away whilst having access to facilities. We cannot wait to come back.

This is a really lovely campsite. Location is superb. We pitched our tent right by the river, loads of space, so quiet. Campsite is very clean and tidy. To be able to use the static caravan for a bath or shower and a useable kitchen with microwave, fridge and freezer was brilliant. Lovely walk to Warkworth castle too. Wish we'd booked a few more nights to explore more of Northumberland. Highly recommend.

Amazing Place

We have just returned from a four day visit to Walkmill and it's our new favourite campsite. We were lucky enough to have a non electric pitch right next to the River Coquet and were completely alone in a large field, apart from the sheep and lambs which we found to be ideal companions. The top camping area has electric hook ups aplenty but we prefer a more basic camping experience and have a gas fridge, cooker and lamp in our little 80's tourer. Also in the top field is an impeccably clean static with shower, BATH!! and toilets as well as two new flush toilets outside. You are able to charge devices, wash up, and use microwave, kettle, toaster, watch DVDs and TV (don't know why you'd want to) and sit in a comfy environment (if you're in a tent). The owners are just the right amount of friendly too, a brilliant place.
