'Out of Africa' style safari tents on the Suffolk coast
If you're hankering after an African safari but feel it might be stretching the budget, have you ever considered Suffolk? It might seem a strange suggestion but the fact is that there is a site (just outside Lowestoft, as it happens) where you can sleep in a safari tent and doze off to the nearby cries and roars of monkeys, lions and apes.

Kessingland Campsite is situated right next door to the rather wonderful Africa Alive wildlife park, whose 80 species of African animals can make you believe you really are in the bush. The glamping the site offers is also an echo of the safari style, with two wonderfully comfortable pre-pitched tents, equipped with everything you need for a fully-fledged family holiday on the Suffolk Coast: two bedrooms with proper beds (they can comfortably sleep four adults or a family of six), a fully stocked kitchenette and an extending living area with an outside verandah where you can sip a drink while living your Out of Africa fantasies.

Elsewhere, the beach is just a mile away, and is a huge sandy expanse with space to spare – you can frolic on the dunes to your heart's content. A short walk away, the Benacre nature reserve offers a chance to spot more traditionally English wildlife, including migrating birds in the spring and autumn, and Lowestoft is just a few miles in the other direction with all the traditional seaside delights.

Your time spent…where it matters Time away with family & friends is great, but let’s be honest - it can sometimes be hectic to even think about! Ready Camp takes away some of the stresses and hassles of camping - having a pre-erected, canvas-wrapped haven with real beds, a kitchen and dining area. There’s no need to fill the car rammed to the rafters with an endless supply of ‘just in cases’. We give you back the time to do the fun things together with your friends and family. Pack your bedding & a sense of adventure Walk into a comfortable haven with cosy furnishings and oodles of little luxuries.  With two bedrooms, an open plan living/dining area where you can wine and dine to your hearts content or put your feet up on the comfy settee after a long day’s adventure. The Kitchen area includes a fridge, microwave and hob, along with basic cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery. (We’ve even supplied the corkscrew!) When it comes to light’s out…we’ve even included a torch for those midnight toilet trips, or just to make funny shadows on the tent!
Nearby attractions
There is loads to do around Kessingland, even after you've exhausted the delights of the beach and the dunes, and the next door Benacre nature reserve. Of course the most obvious place to visit is Africa Alive (01502 740291), right next door to the site, whose noisy collection of animals you will definitely want to meet! Lowestoft has more great beaches and traditional seafront gardens and a pier (01502 573533), while in the other direction posher Southwold also has a very fun pier (01502 722105), a decent beach lined with colourful beach huts and lots of good shops, pubs and restaurants; it's also home to local Suffolk brewer Adnams (01502 727225), who run regular brewery (and distillery) tours. Just a couple of miles inland and south a bit, on the fringes of Lowestoft in Carlton Colville, the East Anglia Transport Museum (01502 518459) is a quirky family attraction, while you can also do boat trips on Oulton Broad (01502 574903) – the southernmost of the famous Norfolk Broads.
Food and drink
In Kessingland itself, the Waterfront restaurant (01502 741525), right on the beach, serves everything from gourmet sandwiches to homemade pasta dishes and Sunday Roasts – and among lots of good seafood dishes they also have a 'Paella Night' on Thursdays. A short drive away, just down the A12, the Shed Café at the Henstead arts and crafts centre (01502 741227), does great breakfasts and light lunches. Further afield, in Lowestoft, the restaurant at the Victoria Hotel, Coast (01502 574433), at the southern end of the seafront, is one of the best places to eat, while there are multiple options in Southwold – we like the Lord Nelson Inn (01502 722079) in the centre of town, the Sole Bay Fish Company (01502 724241) down at the ramshackle harbour, or the Boardwalk restaurant on the pier (01502 722105).
