Just a stone's throw from beautiful Norwich, this wonderfully laid back site is your gateway to the famous Norfolk Broads

A pebble’s throw from a beautiful lake, this is a campsite with traditional and luxury acommodatation, plus bundles of outdoor activities, and all just a leisurely stroll from one of England’s prettiest cities – what more could you want?

Whitlingham Broad Campsite is a relatively new campsite in a county with no shortage of magnificent spots to pitch up. Situated on the spacious 80-acre Country Park, this is both a useful gateway to the Broads, and a perfect base for exploring the medieval delights of Norfolk’s county capital.

The spacious grass pitches are spread over the upper and lower fields, with a magnificent new play area, completed in 2018, built on the slope in between. You can park up tent-side in the lower field while the upper is a car-free haven meaning there’s plenty of room for a run and a play (pooches are welcome too). There’s also a couple of fully furnished bell tents, a yurt, a shepherd’s huts and a converted railway waggon, with views over the country park towards the Great Broad.

The lure of the Broads is inescapable in this part of the world. With scores of visitors flocking to enjoy the wet and wild delights of Norfolk’s many navigable rivers and waterways, Whitlingham Broad is ideally situated to join in the fun. The park’s award-winning Outdoor Education Centre provides a host of activities including kayaking, sailing and windsurfing. And if you’d rather keep your feet strictly on terra firma there are countless scenic walks and bike rides to enjoy. Why not nip in to Norwich for the day to walk the café-dotted lanes and visit its grand Gothic cathedral?

Wonderful place!

Absolutely LOVE this place! We stayed in Ronnie the railway carriage and loved everything about it. So cute and quirky and had everything we needed for a perfect glamping experience. Was so nice to have such clean toilet and shower facilities too, something I usually dread when camping. Such a good location also, really close to Norwich city centre but felt like we were well away from the busyness of a city. Staff were so friendly and accommodating, really made us feel at home. Will 100% be returning!

Money grabbing, confrontational staff

I love Whitlingham Country Park and the surrounding areas. The campsite is pretty and there are nice little touches however, the staff were not overly accommodating, generally quite aggressive and confrontational from the get go. There was a feel of trying to gain as much money off you as possible. Early / late arrival is an extra £5.50, visitors have a charge on top of car parking, cost is per person not per pitch, charge for hair dryers etc too. We were told we had more in our party and more cars then we had paid for, even after this was disproved by going through the booking and naming individuals (was surprised we weren't asked for ID!) we actually had less than what we had paid for, yet there was no apology, only a snotty "well the gazebo still needs paying for and your visitors didn't check in and pay". Nothing to do with the fact that there was no staff member on reception when they arrived.... this was after being told they would allow our earlier visitor (who had already paid) but generally no visitors which is not what is stated on the website or the front gate. Our visitors also were charged different amounts too. We had music on in the evening, nothing loud or over bearing, on the first night we didn't realise the time and turned it off once we were informed, the second night we were told no music at all (this was around 9pm) and then when noted it is until 10:30pm there was just a huff. Just felt like you were continually being watched and trying to grab more money off you. It was my first time at the campsite but others in the group had been the previous year and noted the difference, had they been like that last year, they wouldn't have rebooked, we won't be back.

Pitch perfect campsite on outskirts of Norwich

If you're looking for a campsite that offers an escape from the city but with enough to entertain your camping troupe, Whitlingham Broad campsite fits the bill perfectly. Situated on the edge of Whitlingham Broad, a tranquil lake that offers outdoor sports activities such as kayaking and sailing, and only 10 mins drive into Norwich, whether you fancy some adventurous outdoor pursuits or are drawn to the cultural or commercial attractions of Norwich, there's something for everyone, even the dog! Within minutes of leaving the site by foot, you can be in a wildflower meadow or can walk around the beautiful circular Broad. Don't miss a visit to Redwell Brewery, a local brewery/enterprise just down the road in Trowse (ask reception for directions), which is where you'll find all the locals partying on a Friday and Saturday. It runs regular quiz nights and serves great pizzas from Brick on the weekends. Norwich is fantastic for shopping in and around the Market and independent shops of the Lanes. Only small downside to the campsite is the strangely strict check-in/check-out times, but otherwise would visit again for the location alone.

A relaxing stay away from it all!

My husband and I stayed at Whitlingham Broad Campsite from 22nd to 28th August 2019. We are inexperienced campers and, to be honest, my husband wasn't looking forward to it but by the end of our stay he didn't want to leave! We had wonderful sunny weather which helped. The campsite was spacious and the toilet and shower facilities were excellent and were cleaned regularly. The campsite was busy over the bank holiday weekend and had a great atmosphere - like a pop-up village. There was a good mix of families with young children and older couples and dogs were welcome too. It was a safe place for children to play. It was great to see all the firepits and barbecues in the evenings. The campsite staff were very friendly and helpful and there were plenty of suggestions of what to do. We walked round the broad one morning (about 2 miles) and later the same day went on a trip on the broad on a solar-powered boat which was very interesting. We spent a day at Winterton-on-sea which was beautiful. One evening we walked to the local village Trowse and had a drink in the pub. On other days we visited our daughter and her family at their home in Norwich and were able to babysit for them a couple of times. We would love to return to this campsite and highly recommend it.

Great Family Holiday

This was my family’s first camping holiday and it did not disappoint. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The actual campsite I’d say is quite large and has plenty of room. The facilities were great, the showers were always hot and very well maintained. The campsite shop was very reasonable for essentials. On the day we left my children were so upset to be leaving and I promised that we’d come back and I can honestly say that we 100% will. The area is beautiful and there is so much to do locally. One of my favourite holidays. Thank you so much.

Lovely Site - Slightly Noisy

We had a great stay at the site. Only downside was the road and rail noise, which we weren't expecting to be so bad. Also website shows a low ropes course at the country park that no longer exists. Staff were friendly, ground was flat and not rocky, play park was fab and the facilities decent. The location is good, nice country park, easy access to Norwich and The Broads. We visited BeWILDerwood and Winterton-on-Sea and would recommend both. We would return, the location and facilities do out-weigh the noise issues.

Take a torch

As there is a small ditch between the camping fields it is worth bringing a torch to find your way to the bridge. Located a stones throw away from the Whitlingham country park with a delightful 2 mile walk around the broad. Should you 'accidently' touch the door to the visitor centre after closing a loud speaker will shout out 'you have violated a secure area, please leave immediately, security will be called' but you probably won't touch the door - will you?

Ronnie was amazing!!

We stayed in Ronnie the converted railway carriage for a weekend in June. We had a fantastic weekend and the accommodation was amazing. The owners have done a great job converting the old railway carriage and our boys loved the sleeping pods under the main bed. It is perfect for two adults and two children. The decking area outside was great for relaxing in the evening and the hammock and fire pit was a nice touch. The facilities on site are very good and clean and the owners and staff were very helpful and accommodating. Would highly recommend this site and would say book Ronnie if you want to make your stay a little bit more special.

Fabulous, relaxing & special

We've been coming here with our son for five years now and always have a great time. Chilled out with fantastic views. It's relaxing for adults but with enough to do with boisterous children with the water sports centre so close by. The facilities are spotlessly clean and owners always helpful. There's a shop too for essentials and you can hire a fire pit and buy firewood. Check out the information boards about visiting food vendors to save on having to cook yourself. There is also a visitor centre nearby too if you want a hearty cooked breakfast - usually available late mornings. A short drive and you'll hit Norwich with its Castle museum - check out the Vikings exhibition (until September), the Egyptian mummies and the teapot collection too. Hoping to come back a few more times before the summer's end too. Can't offer a better compliment than that.

Beautiful, rural setting with great facilities and super helpful staff

Have just come home after 4 nights stay over Easter. Such a fantastic site, two fields - one where you can park right next to your tent and one which stays car free. The washing facilities were great, especially the family shower rooms. A really lovely touch and so helpful with smaller children. We found the toilets and shower rooms were well maintained, cleaned each morning and the water hot. A really relaxed vibe with no marked pitches and a fab adventure playground. Both Fergus and his partner were so helpful with ideas of places to go and the local area, from a wander to the local village and pubs, a bike ride round the broad to idyllic, unspoilt beaches a short drive away. Something for everyone. Such a gem to find somewhere so pretty so close to the city centre, the broads and the coast. Thanks for a wonderful stay! We will definitely be back.

Lovely site

Great location within easy access to all amenities and leisure activities. Site well looked after with clean shower/toilet facilities. There is a family room and a room for disabled users. The only critique I would have is if you are going to open all year round you need to have some form of heating in the shower blocks. We visited in April and it was below 10 degrees. I could not take my disabled son into the family or disabled shower facilities to shower as it was simply too cold.

Relaxed and friendly

Lovely setting just next to Whitlingham Broad, no cars on the top camping field which was great for kids and made it feel more old school, as did the fire pits and the lack of measured out pitches. Play area was fab for a variety of ages. Toilets/showers were lovely with plenty of space, hooks in the cubicles, bench to put stuff on, nice and clean. The one "hot" water tap for washing up was lukewarm at best and one of the showers was a bit feeble (there are 3 others). Also, we realised at the end of the weekend that we were supposed to walk all our rubbish right down to the car park - we had used small bin bags and added them to the dustbins near the toilet block as they filled up and this was over flowing a bit by the end. Overall we had a really lovely weekend with friends and children and would definitely think about going back.

Thank you for taking the time to review us - we are glad you had a great stay!

We have reviewed our signage on our convience bins around site, these can fill up if huge bags are stuffed inside them - as we do ask customers to seperate thier recycling and pop into into the skip bins just a few seconds walk onto the car park, this is of course to limit refuse being left out within the camping field, and therefore not attract the woodland wildlife!!

Thanks again for your comments

Dangerous

Having visited the site twice previously, we thought that we would be welcomed back with a safe environment and warm customer service. Yet, the campsite had the audacity to let us set up tents on top of an extremely active wasps nest that had been there since april. We were stung constantly and the campsite refused to do anything claiming that it was not their responsibility to help or get rid of them. After resfusing to show any public liability insurance or first aid certificates, there was no space to move and they told us to deal with it ourselves as they had no duty of care to us. They claimed we never told them where the nest was even though we stated multiple times it was 1 meter from our largest tent. After asking from help since 11am, no one even came over to take a look at the situation until 9pm after the wasps had gone back into the hive and we were leaving the next day. We managed to catch hundreds and hundreds of wasps with the traps that we made ourselves, Ive never felt so unsafe and disregarded in my life. The manager told me I was being extremely rude and didn’t want to deal with me purely because I mentioned that pest control did work during day hours and weren’t constructed to night hours like she claimed. We are absolutely disgusted with their actions, and even admitted to us that as we were a group of 20 year olds, we were only children and had no power over them. It was not only a dangerous situation for us, but for the families with young children camping around us. All we wanted was for someone to remove the nest, but clearly as we pre paid £300 for our trip, they felt no need to look after us and they had already got their money. Disgusted.

Gem of a find!!

As we were traveling to go to Roar dinosaur adventure we didn't want to do that journey in one day with 2 small children. Started browsing the area for hotels, nothing then we found this campsite! Photos on here do not do it justice. It is the best campsite I've ever stayed at and it may have just converted my husband to camping. The park was amazing my 2 really loved it and the bell tent we stayed it was stunning. It was my first experience of glamping and it did make it alot less stressful! My 2 children had an amazing time and from the whole weekend their highlight was only camping 😂😂 thankyou!

Excellent site

Excellent campsite, really good, clean facilities. We stayed in the Shepherds Hut so we had a little bit of luxury. There were three of us but it still felt spacious. Nicely decorated, pretty bedding and lots of cushions.A fire pit, BBQ and picnic bench were included in the cost which was good. The children's play area is great and everything is done to a very high standard. The site is next to a large Broad where you can do various water sports and we went a little further afield and hired a boat to go further. Two local pubs in walking distance are ok and the Vegetarian restaurant is a real gem.

Best campsite I've been to since a long time

Lovely quite place and you can makes quite walks in the surrounding woodland. You can pick your own pitch. Very friendly staff !!! Showers/toilets are very good and clean. Norwich city is close by when you want to visit it. Suggestions: 1. A small shelf in the showers to place items on. 2. Fridge for campers with tents as there is no electricity at the pitches and in particularly in the summer that might proof handy ! 3. Warm water when doing the dishes might help too.

Thank you for taking the time to review us

ANd thank you for your comments, we are looking into the possibilty of haing a small shelf within the shower cubicles themselves. There is warm water for washing up - accessed from the end tap on the wash up area - we will review signage to make this clear. You can also freeze freezer pack in our reception to keep those cool boxes cold!

Ticks the boxes

This site has everything you need and lots more. It's friendly and easy to find. However it just doesn't do it for us as it was not the wild peaceful setting that we love and hoped for. It really is an open space- on a slope where everyone camps around the edge. You can't even see the water.  It does have a great location for walks and access to Norfolk and it is well managed  and good at  dealing with noisy campers.  No complaints just not a favourite. Sorry!

Response from Whitlingham Broad Campsite

Thanks for your review we are sorry it was not right for you here, but glad you enjoyed your stay. The campsite is spread over 2 fields, upper car free field has a mild slope at the top end, the other field where you can camp in a van or with your car is completly flat. Campers have the choice where to it is not nessesary to camp around the edges - you can choose your perfect spot! The water is 30 seconds walk from the site, but. We  are surrounded on all edges by some glorious woodland.

Norwich - who knew?

We went here because all the places we wanted to stay on the north Norfolk coast were full - and didn't regret the decision for a minute! It's a lovely campsite, just getting going, set in a vast wetland park to the south of Norwich. There's a watersports centre, the Norfolk Broads, a cafe/visitor centre, woodland walks, picnic meadow - and all that Norwich has to offer just a short walk (or open-air ferry!) ride away.

The upper field has a no-car policy which makes it very pleasant - there's a track running up the outside of the field where you can drive the car just for unloading though, as well as barrows for carting your stuff. Facilities are basic but kept very clean, and they say they are building more comprehensive bathroom / washing facilities soon. The fires policy was great - no worries that we were breaking the rules just to eat from the Biolite stove, and renting a fire pit didn't break the bank and kept the kids amused in the slightly chilly evenings.

Did I mention Norwich? Interesting historic city centre, very compact, with plenty to do on rainy (or not) days. This summer they had Go-go Dragons dotted around the city centre - a brilliant way to get the kids interested in walking around town. We got 44 on our foray...

An absolute must!

This is one of the best run campsites I have been to, not just in England, but globally. It is placed in a delightful setting and is very close to both Norwich (though it certainly doesn't feel like you are close to a city) and the Norfolk broads are very accessible. The hosts were lovely and very helpful. The facilities were clean and well maintained. Renting a fire pit is a great idea and a great way to spend the evening!

Lovely little city getaway

i liked this site as i'm a norfolk girl and Norwich is my home, it is situated on some lovely walks, which we did,

people have commented on the road which they probably came in on....you can hear but so much in the distance it didn't disturb us at all, we stayed in the top field which does say no cars but you have access to drive around to unload.

The toilet blocks are perfect and are cleaned at least twice a day from what I seen.  You can have campfires in the hired pits which were maybe a little overpriced but we did it anyway.  My kids loved the space they had.

Super cool campsite

We recently stayed in the beautifully situated Whittingham Broad campsite, The location is brilliant not far from the city and many great attractions, The campsite facilities were very clean and modern.

We also had a very warm welcome and great hospitality from the campsite owners Who were very knowledgeable about the local area.

The campsite is dog friendly and our dog had a thoroughly great time playing with the campsite dog Murphy!

I would definitely recommend this as a great family getaway.

Owners Couldn't be more helpful

The owners couldn't have been more helpful. The site is accommodating of groups and were okay accommodating a group of 18 year olds.

We stayed in 2 bell tents, both were extremely spacious yet cosy. The mobile phone/electronic device charging and freezer block freezing was extremely useful, as well as the board game and fire pit rental.

Unfortunately when leaving we encountered mechanical issues. The owners couldn't have done much more. They offered to help resolve the issue and when this was not possible they then found, phoned and arranged a mechanic for us.

Helpful owners, brilliant camping facilities, stunning location, overall an EXCELLENT stay!!

Thank you Whitlingham broad campsite for a fantastic stay!

Happy hippy camping!

Situated in the beauty of the broads, this campsite combines quirky with quaint. You'd never guess you were only a 10 minute drive from the city with the lake by your side and the fields all around. The owners are SO lovely and have the friendliest dog who is just as happy to meet you. Toilets were clean and cool with lovely rustic furniture (and also full of hooks, there's nothing worse than dumping your clothes on a dirty wet floor!) We stayed 2 nights, one in their luxury Shepherd's Hut which was one of the best sleeps I've ever had; it had everything we needed including a set of travel books to read in bed and a little fire to keep warm. The tent pitches were flat and smooth...no rocks here! And you can't turn down the offer to rent a fire pit to sit and watch the stars in this magical place. This is definitely worthy of the title 'cool camping.'

a lovely easter

having found the site on cool camping we booked for the Easter weekend, meeting my brother and his family. this could be a very long review telling you all the good things about this site, but to cut a very long story short - its absolutely lovely! from the owners, their fabulous dog, the setting, everything - we loved it and aim to return. there, thats all you need to know. the only negative (and no fault of the campsite) but as dog owners we get really fed up not being allowed into pubs and the local pub made us sit in the 'garden'. at least that was better than the other pub which wasn't even open!

A Brilliant Family Campsite

This was our first camping trip all together (2 families - 9 of us in total) and we ALL had an amazing time from the youngest to the oldest.  We had booked one Bell Tent and a normal tent pitch so we were on the upper field.  Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by Fergus and Mr Murphy.  We were guided to the Bell Tent and informed that we could use the wheelbarrows to unload (the kids absolutely loved doing this).  The Bell Tent was perfect with loads of little touches that make them that little bit special. We pitched up our tent next to the Bell Tent and made ourselves at home.  The kids loved playing in the woodland area and we had games in the middle of the field.  Nights were spent around the fire pit chatting, laughing and generally enjoying our short break.  We found the shower/toilet facilities to be clean at all times, even in the early morning or  midnight dash through the rain. Upon our last day (which came far to quickly) we all decided that we would all definitely come back again, the kids had already planned new games to play in the woods.  I myself was totally surprised that I enjoyed myself quite so much as I am not a camper at heart, and despite the continuous English rain thoroughly enjoyed myself.   We have no complaints about the campsite at all and only believe that as the years go by the campsite will only improve for the better. We will all be booking again and are already planning our trip.

A very good site

We found this site via cool camping and it was a good honest camp site in a convenient setting. We wanted to have a go at Kayaking and on the broad next to the site you can hire a canadian canoe for £10 for a hour if you mention you are camping.

The site was basic but this is not a bad thing, you have the choice to park next to your tent in one field or car free in the other. It is flat-ish and on a busy bank holiday weekend we found a good spot by the shepherds huts  and set ourselves up. We didnt have kids with us but the kids that were there safely played close to the site in young woods or between the tents. In the evening you can have a fire pit or barbeque either way it was quiet and fellow camper were considerate.

Obviously with Norwich so close you have tons of shops but the camp site had a small shop with a very friendly couple running the whole thing. It did us well for 3 nights we then moved on to a very commercial site called Kelling Heath which in stark contrast seemed impersonal and a bit corperate.

brilliant simple campsite

We spent 2 weeks camping at this site in August when it was just 10 weeks old. We loved the site and would thoroughly recommend it to those that like to get back to simple unspoilt camping. The 2 fields are different in nature with the top field benefiting from not allowing cars on site. Little wheelbarrows were provided to move bags etc around and the kids loved wheeling each other around in these. The beauty of there not being fixed pitches was that you could spread out nicely and didn't feel cramped. Most people pitched around the edges which left lots of play space for the kids and quite a few energetic adults! Night time games of hide and seek in the dark seemed incredibly popular. At night most tents had fire pits (hired from the site) and people sat around chatting and toasting marshmallows while some strummed gently on their guitars. This site was one of the most relaxing we have camped on in our 20+ years of camping. Fergus and Linda were the most amazing "hosts" .Their patience knew no bounds as the kids all gravitated towards them and would either be found perched on the barstools in the office putting the world to rights or playing outside with their very gentle dog; Mr Murphy. The site is well situated, close to the beautiful city of Norwich (5 min drive) and yet in the centre of beautiful countryside, with good transport networks to get out and explore the water ways (sadly the main road was audible at night). The broad next door, provides a good range of water sports for kids Mon-Fri (we would recommend booking these in advance as they can get full mid holidays). Facilities on this site are basic but but that really adds to the beauty of cool camping. The shower water was hot, toilets were clean and sufficient and there was dish washing facilities (although we preferred to wash up by the tent)...really what more do you need?

Happy Camping

Just had 2 nights at Whitlingham Broad Campsite and have had the most relaxing time. We stayed in one of the exquisite and comfortable Shepherd's Huts. They are very comfortable and have been positioned in prime spot so as we prepared dinner under the handy gazebo on the equally handy picnic table, you get a wonderful view across the campsite down to the flint barn visitor centre.

Everyone was friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for us, and the whole site had such a happy and relaxed vibe. The fire pits are great and at night there was the flicker of fires all around and groups of campers huddled around chatting and laughing, but we never felt disturbed by any noise, just added to the atmosphere. The park itself is a lovely spot, loads of walks for the dog and just surrounded by trees as far as you can see, yet only a half hour walk to the centre of Norwich. Loved it, will be back in the winter to take advantage of the log stove in the Shepherd's Hut.

Great Location

We had a wonderful weekend here. This campsite is well located next to some walks by the broads and canals of Norfolk, and on Saturday and Sunday, between 1 and 5pm, there is a local activity centre where you can rent kayaks, canoes, and sail boats.

We stayed in a bell tent, which was excellent. It slept 4 comfortably (on 2 double futons) with an option for 6 (on two provided fold out cushion chair thingies) which would have been a squeeze, but sure, but possible.

The shop is stocked with essentials. The showers are hot.

Apparently, this place has opened only recently. Certainly, I noticed lots of new saplings about the camp site.

My only complaint, would be that this campsite is not quite as secluded as I normally like (the silence of the night is tarnished by the endless drone of the A47 which connects Norwich to Great Yarmouth).

Additionally, the price (£130 for one night) was a little expensive. Actually, it is quoted as being £65 per night, but the minimum reservation is for 2 nights. This is of course common in the camping game, but I still find it irksome.

Great site. Recommended.

This campsite was lovely. A peaceful and charming spot right at the start of the Broads. What was amazing was that despite the tranquility, Norwich was so close that we were easily able to pop into the town for a meal one night and use the trains when we needed to with our bikes. There were some good biking into the Broads from this spot and its a perfect place for walking. Linda and Fergus couldn't have been more helpful and friendly and we wish them every success with their excellent new campsite.

Perfect weekend of camping!

Camping here was amazing. We turned up with our tent and everything to find a very pretty and spacious camping field. We picked our favourite spot which had a great view up the top not far from the shepherds' huts. The camping pitches were very nice - not rocky, very grassy and flat. Also there were not set spaces which meant everyone was free to kind of spread out.
The owners, Linda and Fergus, were very friendly and welcoming. They helped us book a cab at one point when we had to duck into town and when we left to go back to the station. They also provided portable fire bowls/bbqs which was great - nice and warm to sit around at night.
The location was very nice. The broads are just 2 minutes walk away and there is an information centre just across the street with a cafe where you can buy coffee, tee, ice cream, etc...

Whitlingham Broad Campsite

We stayed in one of the shepherds huts. It was very pleasant and well furnished. The log burner made it very warm and it was cosy with the tealights in the holders provided. Facilities are functional and it was nice to be able to have a fire pitt. Would recommend to friends and would stay again.
