Small-scale back-yard camping with campfires, a 10-minute drive from the Norfolk coast

It's hard to believe the Kemp family own a static caravan park on the coast. After all, the other campsite they offer, practically in their back garden, is the very antithesis of the holiday park scene. It's small (there are around 20 pitches all told) and only tents are allowed. Throw in the fact that campfires are welcome, free-range chickens share the space and young families make up the majority of campers and you get the picture: Alby Wild Camping is about traditional camping of old.

Opened for the first time in 2021, the campsite, set in the acreage behind a compact Victorian manor house, is parcelled up by shrubs and trees to create a smaller, more intimate feel. There are two camping areas. You can choose from the well-trimmed former orchard – simply pitch where you like – or, on the other side of some trees, there are 10 individually mown pitches in an old hay meadow, with grass left long and wild in between. New facilities, meanwhile, have been purpose built for the campsite in an old stable building and there's also an additional composting loo in a corner of the hay meadow area.

Campers aren't the only ones to enjoy the grounds of Alby Hall. You can collect eggs from the free-range hens, perhaps for a fried breakfast cooked over the campfire, and there's also a pair of gregarious rare-breed pigs, Michelle and Julie, in a far corner. You're welcome to join owners, Alice and Matt, and help rattle the bucket and provide the two pigs with their daily feed. The pigs seem to be of particular fascination to children, who, like Matt and Alice's own children, are generally at home at the campsite, enjoying the ample free space left for games and the trees to climb.

While the nearby A-road does mean there's some occasional road noise, the upshot is easy access to the best of Norfolk. Two National Trust estates – Felbrigg and Blickling – vie for your attention within less than 10 minutes of the campsite and it's 10 minutes, too, to the coast around Cromer, where you can try crabbing off the pier, swimming in a life-guarded stretch of sea or walk a particularly beautiful stretch of the Norfolk Coast Path between Cromer and Overstrand. Not that you need go that far. There's an intriguing set of craft shops and a café a couple of minutes walk from your tent and one of Norfolk's best pubs, the Gunton Arms, a pleasant one-hour walk away.

Details

Facilities

Choose from one of two fields, The Orchard or The Hay Paddock. In the former you can pitch where you like, under the trees or in a sunnier spot around the edge, while, in the Hay Paddock, there are pre-cut pitches with views across the open farmland (great for watching the sunset). Grass is left to grow free between pitches and the two camping areas are separated by a row of trees. Proper flushing loo and hot shower in a converted stable building, plus a composting loo in the old hay meadow. Drinking water point. Freezers for re-freezing ice-packs and power points available near the side of the orchard. Firepits for hire and logs for sale. Some road noise from the A140.

Suitable For

Tents, dogs (maximum two per booking), families, couples – yes. Campervans, caravans, noisy folk and single-sex groups of more than six people – no.

Nearby

It's a five-minute walk to Alby Crafts (01263 761652), a local barn conversion complex that's home to a superb café, craft shops, a pottery studio and more, and five minutes by car into Aylsham, a pleasant market town with a good antiques shop, more cafés and a farmers market on the first Saturday of each month. Aylsham is also a good place to pick up the Weaver's Way if you like walking (it's an easy route following the path of an old railway line and suitable for cycling, too, in many places). There are two National Trust properties less than 10 minutes from the campsite. Blickling (01263 738030) is best if you want to visit the gardens (paid entry for the main garden and house) or find intrigue in the grounds, including woods, a tower, a mausoleum and a good lake to walk around with views of the back of the 17th-century hall. But choose Felbrigg (01263 837444) if you want big, classic estate grounds, grazed by sheep and with a more open setting – it too has a lake and there's a nice circular walk from the Jacobean hall, to the church, across to the lake and back via the woods, taking in the kitchen garden by the main car park to finish off with. Of course, you don't come to this part of Norfolk without spending a decent bit of time on the coast. It's a 10-minute drive to Cromer – walk the beach eastwards to Overstrand then return along the clifftop coastal path beside the golf course, finishing with fish and chips at the end – the town is home to a pier and a good number of shops and pubs. Sheringham Beach and Sheringham Park are also within a 15 minute drive, while more marshy stretches of the coastline, around Salthouse, Cley and Blackney are within half an hour and are particularly good for birdwatching, with some of the most interesting stretches of the Norfolk Coast Path.

Food & Drink

The nearest pub is the Alby Horse Shoes (01263 761378) near the entrance to Alby Crafts (01263 761652) where there's a good tearooms and café. But it's worth driving the five-or-so minutes to the Buck Arms (01263 732133) or the Black Boys (01263 732122) in Aylsham or, by day, visiting one of the two excellent butchers there, as well as the Bread Source bakery (01263 733733) and Charlie Hodson's cheese deli. For a real treat, the campsite practically backs on to the Gunton Estate, where the old gatehouse is now a superb, award-winning restaurant (01263 832010) that specialises in venison and cooks steaks and meats over a huge open fire in the middle of the dining room (where an enormous set of elk antlers adorn the wall). The owner is also an at dealer by trade, so expect striking art work on the walls and there's an excellent atmosphere, with tables outside for drinks, too, with views over the deer park. If you're on the coast, enjoy sea views with your fish and chips from Galton Blackiston's award-winning fish and chip restaurant, No. 1 (01263 515983), or head further up the coast to The Dun Cow (01263 740467) at Salthouse (a good place to combine a meal with watching the sunset on Salthouse's pebble beach).

Getting There

Follow the A140 towards Cromer from Norwich and go past Aylsham. You will enter a 40mph zone at Alby With Thwaite and pass Alby Crafts on your left (there's a brown tourist sign there). The Downtide Centre (caravan sales) and a BP garage will be on your right. Alby Wild Camping is just after this on the right hand side – look out for the fencing and pull into the metal gates at the end of the fence. If you reach the end of the 40mph speed zone, you've gone too far.

From Cromer, follow the A140 towards Norwich. Go over the mini roundabouts at Roughton and continue for a further two miles. Shortly after you enter the 40mph zone at Alby With Thwaite, pull into the metal gates on your left hand side. If you reach the BP garage you've gone too far.

Regular buses run along the A140 that passes the site between Cromer, Aylsham and Norwich – the route you want is 44, 44A, X44 or X40. There is a stop just outside Alby Crafts and The Downtide Centre just down the road from Alby Wild Camping (ask for the Alby Crafts stop and the bus driver will know it).

Nice, friendly campsite!

Before we arrived I was worried about the lack of facilities. We hadn't done very basic camping for a whole week before and this campsite's website said it had only one shower and 3 loos for 20 pitches. The "wild" in the name nearly put me off and I was half expecting a badly maintained field next to a busy road. I am pleased to report that I was pleasantly surprised. The site is pretty and well thought out. There are 2 small fields. First the Orchard where you can pick where you pitch. There were a few larger groups who grouped their tents together and some who pitched smaller tents between the fruit trees. We were in the Hay Paddock which had designated pitches and was car free (you can drive in to pack and unpack only). The best thing about this site was how friendly it was. Everyone said hello and got chatting. Kids all joined in playing together. There are rope swings, a line of trees along one edge that they mucked about in, chickens and pigs and a grassy area to run around on (this is right next to the greenhouse though so watch out if they've got a ball!) It's about 15 mins drive to Cromer, West Runton or Mundesley beaches, which were all a bit different so you've got options for funfair/amusements/ice cream or quieter rock pooling and paddling. People at the campsite were taking the half hour drive to Horsey Gap to see the seals on the beach. There are 2 NT places within 10 mins drive. There's no shop on site but there is a signposted footpath to a nearby petrol station which has essentials and we noticed does the larger gas cannisters. There's also a caravan supplies shop 2 mins down the road which might do spare pegs etc although we didn't have to go there! We thought another shower, another washing up sink and maybe an outdoor sink with a standpipe where you could wash your hands would be nice, but the basic facilities would not stop us coming back!!

A great family campsite

Love wild parties? Entertainment, caravan parks and on demand food vans? Then sorry, this isn’t the campsite for you! However, if you love a “back to nature”, proper camping experience in a gorgeous location with respectful campers, you’ll love Alby Wild Camping! It’s a very small campsite but perfect for kids, with ropes and dens to play in, trees to climb and pigs to feed! There are chickens roaming freely everywhere (good luck finding an egg though!). Fire pits to rent out. Clean loos and hand sanitiser for Covid safety. The one shower is inadequate (and rarely hot!) but as we were expecting “wild” camping, this definitely wasn’t a major for us! The kitchen facilities were actually a nice surprise as we’re used to having to boil water to wash up! And incredibly clean as everyone was so respectful and wiped down everything for the next people. We stayed in the Hay Paddock, which had generous pitches and a relaxed, peaceful vibe. Unlike other campgrounds I’ve stayed at, it was lovely and quiet at night, perfect for young families. You do need a car to get to most places and the Cromer Road is insanely busy, but there is a footpath at the back of the Hay Paddock that leads to a petrol station if you just need milk or other basics (like much cheaper firewood!)… Opposite the site is a cafe, art gallery and gardens, which we didn’t visit. But as a trail runner I was delighted to discover some gorgeous trails nearby (accessible from the campsite) which went past Alby Craft Centre to Thwaite Common and beyond. Further afield are the popular locations of Cromer, Holt, Sheringham, the Norfolk Broads and Norwich. We loved our stay at Alby. The weather was a bit rubbish but that’s the great British summer for you! The rest was lovely.

Wonderful camp site

This is perhaps the best campsite in the UK we've stayed at. They were helpful and prompt in booking and check-in, flexible on-site, there was plenty of space and great & cosy facilities. The orchard itself was beautiful and we loved the pigs. The covered kitchen & lounge area was a great hit. We hope you get permission to do this again next year - if so, we'll be back!!

Really lovely

I'm so tempted to give it zero stars just to keep it to ourselves! ;) Lovely little pop-up in a great location for exploring north Norfolk. Generally pretty quiet. Space for the kids to run around, but not so big that you can lose them! (And closed off so they are safe.) There is a path to walk to the garage/shop next door for fresh milk and all of the other facilities you've already read about. Nice flat fields. Just book it, you won't regret it.

Spacious and relaxed in the hay paddock

Nice location for access to the coast (busy road a bit tricky to cross for cycling) Recommend the hay paddock - quieter and calmer vibe. Could do with a 2nd shower to serve the whole site. Generally nice set up, clear instructions and free marshmallows 😊

Ideal Pop Up Campsite

Really enjoyed our stay at Alby. Loved the pigs, they were not at all noisy or smelly and we were pitched right beside them.. :-) It’s well located for Tourist days out. Free range chickens like to keep the place tidy of any crumbs from your table and munch the worms from under your groundsheet as you pack up. Nice wild kitchen area for washing up and a freezer for cold packs. Facilities are otherwise quite basic but it’s a nice balance, it has what you need. We counted ourselves lucky to have found it and enjoyed our stay. Thanks for sharing your back garden with us.

Very nice site

Despite arriving late on our first night the host was very polite and made quick work of dos and donts as it was getting dark and threatening rain. Site has shower and portaloos plus an outdoor washing up area. Site kept very clean and no continual fussing. Petrol garage in easy walking distance in case you forget anything. Good roads to Norwich and Cromer (A140).

Basic but beautiful!

What a fantastic discovery! Alby Wild Camping was an absolutely perfect spot for our weekend visiting family in Norfolk. We stayed in the Hay Paddock, where the pitches were a great size and really well spaced. We were shown to our pitch and given all the information we needed & the family were on hand to answer any questions. The little covered kitchen area was great and the porta-loos were clean. Just one shower, which meant a bit of a wait, but that wasn't a problem. The weather was a bit mixed, but on both nights we got long enough cloud free periods for long enough to appreciate the incredible Norfolk skies & sit around the fire pit!

Great welcome

Positive Two camp sites, The Orchard and Hay Paddock to accommodate 10 camping tents each, potentially 80 people.  Hosts very polite and welcoming.  We had a beautiful spot to pitch our tent.  Very clever how each pitch was sized out, with long grass left to grow to section of pitches.  Days out were good to the Market place,  umpteen stalls to browse, very much a tourists attraction, very friendly people.  Great space for children to run about and play. Chickens roaming free, eggs land tomatoes left for campers in the kitchen area. Very funny to see children trying to catch the chickens. Cromer beach about 15mins away, absolutely packed, you were lucky to find a parking space. The Plantation Gardens were so  beautiful.  The Animal Sanctuary was amazing but very sad to read the stories of how each animal had been rescued.  Great Yarmouth 45mins away.  (Sarah's tea room, beautiful and very friendly and accommodating)  it is a must to have fish & chips. Negative  The welcome details, proper flushing toilets, no mention of porta loos (morning the loos would be working or not as the case may be, which was quite often) it is a shame one shower for the whole camp of potentially 80 people.  Open outdoor kitchen, often no running hot water to wash dishes. Only two electric plug sockets to charge up your phone, and any other necessity. Restrictions NO music, generator NOT allowed to blow up beds, charge up mobile phones, else it would disturb other campers, who are sleeping at 10am 🤔😏😁hmmm dont think so, apparently a complaint was put in, we had a word with campers, all denied. The hosts obviously had visitors over, sounded like they were having a good rave up,  the music was very loud into the night, a lot of loud chatting and laughing. Suggestion: proper flushing toilets 👍(COVID19 is far by over, it is spread by bodily fluids, e.g. coughing, sneezing, urine etc.) and more showers👍 More electrical sockets👍

I wouldnt return

good points - Both camping fields are beautiful. flat, lots of grass, different pitch sizes, availability of firepits, there's a tire swing attached to one of the trees in the orchard that my kids loved to play with, theres a few ropes attached to a tree between the 2 feilds, lots of chickens running wild, the pigs are good, very noisy especally at night. lots of things to do, Cromer was bout 15 mins away, plantation garden about 30 mins away, shirehill (rescued animals) about 30 mins away, great yarmouth is about 50 mins away. horse riding is about 10 mins - petrol station is about 10 min walk from the camp site, the stars are beautiful to watch at night, waking up to the sound of birds is bliss. the not so good 1 shower room (toilet not worked for the 6 day stay we were there) No hot water in the sink. (there were about 20 tents at 1 point in our stay and the shower was litterly impossible for muddy kids). 3 poterloos that were filthy most of the time, the road it very loud, day and night with busy traffic. 2 electrical sockets. The camp site likes noisy campers but dosnt like the Clarks generator. which is very quite. was used for 2 days to charge mobile phones. Blow up the airbeds, hair dryers. Was used after 10am and always before 6pm. the owner offered us an extension wire to blow up the airbeds but when we requested it, it never came.quad bikes, extreamly noisy but they were used morning day and night on atleast 3 4 days, only hot water for the entire camp site was in the outdoor kitchen. camping with 2 small children, uncle aunty, mum who has alzymers. porter loo was hard for my mum as she could never remember how to use it. No adavance notice or any mention of it in the welcome email. I used the toilets at the supermarket more then once to wash my face and brush my teeth. I have been to plenty of pop sites that are pretty good compared to this 1. Utterly disappointed with facilities and the friendly owners. I would never book again.

Response from Alby Wild Camping

I was almost not going to waste my time replying to your review being as it is mainly made up of fabrications.  What I will mention is this; having been in hospitality for over 30 years, neither myself or my husband have ever come across such selfish, rude and exasperating customers. Thankfully, looking at all our 4 & 5 star reviews, our experience with your family is a rarity and we consider ourselves lucky to have welcomed so many other, lovely guests to camp in our grounds. We bent over backwards to accommodate all your requests and you were consistently rude, demanding and exasperating.  As for your petrol generator - we asked you to turn it off at 8.45pm on your first evening and advised you were unable to use such a noisy item at our campsite.  You were rude, argumentative and unable to see the noise would affect all the other campers (we had 6 complaints by the next morning, so it is not "quiet").  You were then asked again at 8am the following morning to turn it off as you were waking all the campers up; your response "they should all be up now anyway"  is frankly, disgusting; yet illustrative of the entitled, vulgar and selfish behaviour we witnessed by you.  My husband offered to provide you with an extension cable so you could blow up your mattresses but you failed to let us know when you required it.  You repeatedly occupied the Wild Kitchen for lengthy periods so no one else on the site could use it, you complained about everything, you were rude to my husband and daughter and your foul language was embarrassing to hear.  The basic facilities are clearly noted on our website and Cool Camping therefore it is unreasonable to complain about them once you're here.  I would advise booking a campsite with more facilities next time NOT a wild campsite. We are absolutely delighted you would not return as you and your family are not welcome.

Lovely and fun campsite

Great place, shame there's only one shower for the whole campsite and toilets are portable loos, for a long stay it would be desirable to have a proper toilet specially for short ppl. Host was super friendly and helpful at our arrival. If you pitch in the left side of the Orchard the road can get very noisy even at night as it's a busy road, it did disturb our sleep at some points. Washing up area is good and has a plug you can use for charging phones or hairdryer which is super convenient and also a freezer for ice packs. Petrol station within 10mins walk with all essentials. Outdoors space is lovely grass, piggies and hens make your stay fun!

It was great to stay at Alby Wild Camping. Having the animals around make the place so unique. The only improvement would be having the toilet facilities cleaned more frequently. Amazing!

First time camping with the kids and this was the perfect site. They loved the pigs, chickens and baby toads. It's a small cosy site, not too crowded and the kids made friends and spent most of the day playing, in fact I barely saw them. We were in the hay paddock so had our own pitch which was perfect. There's a kitchen area for washing up, 2 drinking water points, freezer, free marshmallows and eggs. 3 portaloos, 1 'normal loo' in a shower room, and a compost loo, we never had to queue for the loo even though the site was near full. only one shower though, first morning we got straight in, second morning we had one person in front of us, so wasn't too bad but if I had to put a negative I would say another shower or two would be lovely but to be honest we did fine with the one. we were greeted by a lovely lad who showed us around and even called on the kids when it was piggy feeding time. It was a perfect first attempt at camping and the kids are already asking to come back again and want to stay longer than a weekend :)

Everything we needed

Me and my friend fancied a night away, we booked on the day. Compared to other pitches and sites the price was so reasonable and the fact that it was dog friendly swung us round to booking! The experience was made by getting one of the fire pits the hosts offer for a price of £5 per night, they also provide wood and fire lighters for an additional £8, we supplied our own wood but regret doing so as the tubs of wood the site offer are far more substantial than what you’d find at the garage for the same price. All in all the location was lovely and the family who run the place are great. Would definitely recommend! Thanks for having us x

A Friendly Fun Fantastic Campsite

This is a really lovely fairly basic campsite, the family are really friendly and welcoming. The ground is level and the toilets, kitchen and shower are clean and tidy. The pigs and wondering chickens add to the atmosphere and our two little boys LOVED feeding them. There was more than enough space for privacy and sitting around a campfire and roasting marshmallows, all provided by the site, is an experience that will stick with them. We had a fantastic time and will be back next year. Oh and the location is perfect for visiting the north Norfolk coastline.
