Small, secluded, homespun farm campsite in rural Norfolk, a short drive from Thetford Forest Park

Barley shimmering in the breeze, tractors working in the fields and row upon row of vegetables. Norfolk is the breadbasket of England and if you’re going to go camping here there’s no finer place to stay than on a farm. And, when it comes to quiet farm stays, there’s one particular spot that stands out. Or rather, it doesn’t stand out at all, but harmlessly blends in to the point you might never know it’s there. And that’s Brakehill Lodge.

More than a mile from the nearest A-road and at the end of a long private drive, Brakehill Lodge Farm is the very epitome of a secluded farm stay. The camping field is sheltered and intimate, encircled by tall trees that break the wind but still leave views of blazing sunsets, and the old pig barn has been converted into a convenient communal space for campers, with a pool table, sofa and leaflets about local attractions. Outside, there are fairly lights and potted flowers and you can borrow the badminton racquets for games. It’s homespun and small scale – just right for a simple weekend in the tent.

The campsite is actually just one of owner Clare’s enterprises. She also runs popular craft courses, including pottery, willow weaving, peg looming, soap and candle making and more – with some of the proceeds going to support the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. In all, it makes for a charming concoction that shows rural enterprising at its best. She even sells homemade bread and honey fresh from the farmhouse.

Famously flat, the local Norfolk countryside is a dream if you’ve brought your bikes and want some family-friendly exploring. There’s a handful of good pubs within pedalling distance but most folks head the half-hour drive south to Thetford Forest Park, for marked trails and good walking routes. On a sunny day, try the parking area at the St Helen's Picnic Site for paddling and swimming in a pretty section of the Little Ouse River. If it’s particularly hot it can be surprisingly busy, given how hidden in Thetford Forest it feels, but when you return to the tiny campsite at Brakehill Lodge Farm you can be sure of peace and quiet again.

Nearby

Part of the beauty of Brakehill Lodge Farm is the seclusion and time spent reading a book, sitting by the campfire and generally doing very little. The real local draw is Thetford Forest, about 15–30 minutes away (depending on which part your heading to), which has miles of marked trails for both walking and cycling and, meandering through the middle, the Little Ouse River, which has a few good wild swimming spots (St Helens Picnic Site at Santon Downham is particularly good for summer paddling with kids). It’s also a half-hour drive into the city of Norwich – visit the cathedral (01603 218300), the castle museum and generally roam the tight lanes area and explore the market – and 35 minutes to the closest stretches of the Broads.

Food & Drink

There's a small shop a mile away in Carbrooke but for most major conveniences (including a supermarket) it's four miles to Watton, where you'll also find the thatched, dog-friendly Willow House pub (01953 881181). Elsewhere, it's four miles to the more modern Red Lion (01953 483858) in Caston, good for fish and chips, while the renowned White Hart (01953 850214) in Hingham is particularly popular and has a good range of real ales and ciders on tap. Some local takeaways (including fish and chips) also deliver directly to the campsite – details are provided in the campsite welcome pack.

Family fun in a gorgeous setting

Asked my boys (aged 5 & 7) what their favourite things were about our stay at the farm. They said the campfire and the games in the barn... and the chickens, and watching the combine harvesters on the fields next to us, and the 'midnight' walks and seeing a deer, a hare and bats. and EVERYTHING! Thank you, they really loved it and I really loved that as parents we had a good nights sleep in a proper bed that was made up and ready for us and we didn't have to worry about putting a tent up and there was plenty of space and everything we needed during out stay was there! A really lovely couple of nights stay.

Beautiful and secluded

A beautiful campsite where you fall asleep to the soothing sound of trees rustling in the wind. The campsite is small, so lovely and quiet and the facilities were great- and so cute and rustic! The family have created a beautiful farmyard setting with fresh cute flowers left in our tent and every single kitchen utensil we needed for our stay in the bell tent which also included a gas stove, fire pit, firewood, kettle, cutlery and plates. Even a corkscrew for a bottle of wine! We loved seeing the chickens and ducks, and even some lovely Turkeys. At night we heard owls and the stars are stunning above the campsite as the farm is totally in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by fields on all sides. Our favourite visit near to this campsite was Pensthorpe Wildlife Park which has incredible perennial gardens and a huge children’s play park, also Gressingham Workhouse which was really cool. The bell tent was perfect for us as we took our baby for his first holiday. It had plenty of room for us to set up our travel cot next to the bed. The campsite was beautifully maintained and mowed so we could let him crawl around on the grass safe in the knowledge that he wouldn’t pick up anything sharp or dirty.

Fantastic family site

We spent three nights in one of the bell tents, and had a wonderful time. The tent itself was well equipped, with everything we needed to enjoy our stay, and a comfy bed for us and air beds for the children. It was an added bonus to have a kettle and china mugs too! As the site only has a few tents, it felt safe enough for the children to ride their bikes around freely, and they also enjoyed learning to play pool and table football. It was a great base to explore the area, and plenty of local pubs to eat out at as well. We’d definitely recommend the site to anyone!

A truly wonderful stay in Norfolk

This place is a real gem! We stayed for three nights in one of the bell tents and had a fantastic time. Clare was very helpful when we had a change of plans and the whole place is very well kept. With access to a fridge, a kettle, tea and coffee, a gas hob and a barbecue, everything we needed had clearly been thought about. The showers and toilets (2 of each) were clean and well maintained. Only one of the other two bell tents was occupied during our stay, along with one or two tents in the small meadow with pitches, so we never had to wait to use the facilities. The site itself is amazingly quiet, with only the birds making any noise. I would highly recommend!

Peaceful, beautiful scenery, great amenities and activities

We only stayed one night, but it was perfect. Great to get away from the city and bask in true rural beauty. Amazing wildlife - we saw hares and deer, and the wildflowers are beautiful. We took a walk in the countryside, and then relaxed back at the campsite. We lit a fire, watched the sunset and played pool. The bell tent was so romantic, well-decorated and we had all the amenities we could ask for - Clare was very generous and a good host, she gave us things we needed like wellies, socks and bacon in the morning for breakfast! No complaints at all :)

Quiet, relaxing and beautiful

We had such a lovely break at Brakehill - the bell tent was all ready for us when we got there and we were warmly welcomed by Claire, Alex and all the animals! The kids had a great time with all the games and there were plenty of different spaces to relax. The villages nearby had plenty of walks and places to explore and it's not far from Thetford Forest which the whole family enjoyed. We would definitely visit again as when the sun is out Brakehill is a little bit of paradise!

Stayed in a bell tent May half-term with our 7 year old.

Beautiful campsite, and would totally recommend it to families or couples. Owners were really accommodating, and couldn't do enough for you. Good facilities and fairly near to shops and pubs. Loved being able to have a campfire at night time too. Also loved Clare's home made candles and soaps! Thank you for a lovely stay!
