Beach Close, Overstrand, Cromer, Norfolk NR27 0PJ
This lesser-frequented stretch of North Norfolk's superlative coastline is often overlooked in favour of trendier spots further along. But in many ways, it’s hard to see why. The beaches here are generally larger, sandier and more accessible than most others, and the shoreline as a whole is often more remote and less dominated by a busy coastal road. The villages, too, are pleasant, unpretentious places that feel slightly more untouched by the modern world.
The pretty village of Overstrand, a few miles south of Cromer, is one such place, sitting atop cliffs that overlook a wide and beautiful stretch of child-friendly sandy beach. From its perch on the edge of the village, Overstrand Campsite makes the most of this location, with pre-pitched tents in a line along the back of the site and unmarked pitches for tents across the rest of the small, flat field.
Small but perfectly located atop the Norfolk cliffs, Overstrand is run by Go Camping UK. It’s comprised of 10 ‘ready’ tents in a line along the back of the site; and the rest of the small, flat field provides 45 unmarked pitches just for tents – not even campervans can sneak in here.
You can climb out of your tent in the morning and race down to the beach or go for a walk in either direction along the shore – either to Cromer, two miles to the north, or south towards the slightly larger resort of Mundesley.
And while kids scramble down the cliffs to the beach from the path running along the front of the site, adults can get reach it by the more sedate ways leading from the adjacent car park. Denise Peet and her family run the site and camp alongside you in one of their ready tents, rustling up cooked breakfasts, toasted sandwiches, and pub-type food in the evenings from the onsite Cabin Café.

Busy, Buzzy Campsite By The Beach
Can't beat the proximity to the beach. A nice busy site if you like to have somewhere sociable where the kids can make friends e.t.c. Spent most of our time on the beach but sadly weather not the best. Cafe good too.
Lovely location but an exceptionally rude staff member
Beautiful site location. Toilets & showers basic but clean and stocked well with toilet paper & soap but lack of hot water made use hit or miss. Dish washing facilities clean and open all hours. Upon our arrival we were shown to our spot by the warden who explained we had the space between 3 fence posts. As we were pitching our tent (in gusty winds and for only the 2nd time) we heard a female member of staff screaming that we'd booked the wrong pitch across the campsite... she continued to scream as she stomped across the field to us and told us we'd booked a small pitch... I apologised and explained we'd not booked a tent pitch before or used the site or cool camping previously and hadn't realised there was a size restriction... I asked what she wanted us to do and asked if she wanted us to move? She told us there were 2 more large tents coming the next day and if we parked our car in front of the tent we wouldn't go over the pitch size... we took up only 1.5 fence posts to the 3 we were told we had for that pitch. The small tent next to us - who had also taken a small pitch had 2.5 fence posts - so we felt at that time that we hadn't caused any further difficulties. I checked my email and nowhere did it state the size restrictions of the tent for that pitch - it wasn't until I got home that I realised that I had just clicked "book now" but if I'd clicked the blue "small clifftop pitch" (which doesn't look like a link) it would have provided all the additional details and I wouldn't have booked it.... PLEASE BE AWARE WHEN BOOKING ON THIS SITE! The next day (whilst I sat in my tent) I overheard the woman from the site tell the campers who had arrived, that it didn't matter how close they got to us as we were going the next day... the campers mirrored her attitude and got that close that we couldn't comfortably exit our tent on that side and my husband was caught by a pole whilst they were erecting their tent. I also overheard them say whilst debating which direction to pitch that "they don't matter, as she said"... not only was the woman's behaviour on the site extremely rude but her behaviour also cascaded to other campers who made us feel extremely uncomfortable. The second large tent had pitched diagonally across there pitch and had only stayed for 1 night and left, so there was more than enough room. Unfortunately, our first time away camping which could have been a lovely relaxing weekend, was ruined by a member of staff. Very sad and uncalled for.
Beautiful location, right by the beach. Cafe was nice and staff were very friendly, but site was crowded and the showers didn't look like they'd ever been cleaned, quite unpleasant. We would return for a short trip because the location is great, but facilities aren't good enough for a long trip.
This campsite has a great location close to a superb beach. Nevertheless, it is expensive: £18 minimum charge in 2012 for a pitch for a small tent, and, as a lone camper, I find this too much. Be warned that on this exposed cliff top the wind can be very fierce and taller tents do get damaged. The toilets and showers are basic and the wash-up facilities poor, though you’ll be glad to be indoors if there’s rain. The cliff top views are magnificent and of course you don’t have to pay beach parking. The public toilets nearby offer an acceptable alternaive when the site is busy. All in all though i don’t think I’ll be going back, but if you have children, the proximity of the beach (albeit something of a climb back up to the cliff top!) probably makes it worth it.
Stayed here in early September 2011. Loved this site, spectacular cliff-top location and a short walk down the cliff path to the lovely sandy beach. Run by friendly laid back staff. Not too busy when we went as the "permanent" rental-tents were being dismantled so we could pick our own spot which in our case was right up near the cliff edge. There is a wire fence, but if you have tear-away toddlers the cliff edge may lead to some worry and angst!
Will definately go again, maybe next spring before it gets busy.
Just got back from two nights at the Overstrand Campsite!
It is a GREAT location being right on the beach and within walking distance to Cromer.
The facilities are basic but clean which is the most important thing for me and the staff were friendly and helpful! They make a good bacon and egg bap for breakfast!
Would defintely go back again!!!
