Cosy year-round glamping and seasonal camping in a fenland meadow with views of Ely cathedral

Forget the Mad Hatter’s tea party and head, instead, to Cambridgeshire for the Mad Hatter’s camping party. Okay, so it’s not quite a party but it’s fair to say that there’s a great atmosphere and everyone is invited. Campers, glampers, kids, couples, dogs and groups of camping buddies are all welcome here. This quirky, Alice In Wonderland-themed fenland site is quickly establishing itself as the place to pitch for a stay near the charming city of Ely. With pitches among tussocky grass and wildflowers, views of the cathedral and a riverside trail in to town, it’s little wonder why.

Mad Hatters Campsite is lightly-themed on Lewis Carroll’s classic story with pitches named after key characters and a year-round glamping cabin that’s straight out of a fairy tale. The name, and subsequent theme, pays homage to Ely’s own Mad Hatter – farmer David, who owns the land. He is always busy and (you guessed it) is often seen sporting a hat (a practical cap rather than an elaborate headpiece – but, even so, the name has stuck). It’s daughter Claire who’s set up the campsite in a field among the 100-acre farmland that stands in sight of Ely Cathedral.

The Queen of Hearts Cabin is the top spot and remains open throughout the winter but in the summer there’s under-canvas glamping too in three bulbous, well kitted-out Luna bell tents. There are 28 pitches for those with their own kit in a field that could accommodate twice that number. Space is valued here and the establishing trees and wildflowers have been planted to encourage biodiversity and connect wildlife habitats with neighbouring fenland farms. The long grass, the campfire-friendly policy and quirky bell tents give the site a laid-back atmosphere but it’s traditional in other ways with modern facilities and a sweet-little reception area where you check in and can stock up on seasonal strawberries, grown on the farm.

This site has achieved the rare feat of being equally appealing to couples and those with kids. Younger campers will love the theme, exploring the little play areas and looking for wildlife while adults will love the privacy of the well-spaced pitches. The walk in to Ely is the perfect length – long enough to stretch the legs but not too long for little ones. There are plenty of recommended eateries and grown-up attractions at the end of it (the cathedral and Oliver Cromwell’s house, for example) and enough riverside appeal for the 40 minutes on foot.

The Owner Says

The campsite consists of five acres of green grassy field with a beautiful pond, surrounded by colourful wild flowers nectar mixes, and over 3 acres of newly planted trees and hedges. We have various bird boxes and feed stations in the mixes to encourage wild birds and pollinators, something that we are really passionate about. The Mad Hatter's theme is incorporated throughout the campsite, with quirky signs scattered around the site, a trail and a small play house. Each pitch is also themed with its own unique name which is also sign posted with a Mad Hatter charm to it. The cosy coffee room, is the perfect spot to chill out and warm up on those rainy days. The tranquil small pond has benches scattered around it and several public footpaths close by, so you can enjoy the scenery, be closer to nature and really switch off. There are also many pretty rural walks nearby, the walk to Ely along the River Ouse is particularly beautiful, with amazing views of Ely Cathedral.

Social Distancing Measures

We have taken risk assessments on sites and will adhere to all Government guidelines/ restrictions on social distancing. We have created a guidelines checklist sheet and risk assessment all are on our website. Our pitches are very spaced so the only area for changes will be in the wash facilities. We have 4 parts to our wash facilities and a system in place to control numbers inside. Wash facilities will be deep cleaned everyday as well as our regular cleaning of morning, afternoons and evenings.

Weekend retreat

What a fantastic site. Good size pitch ehu, lovely views, friendly staff. Toilets and showers were the best I have been in so far, very clean, even had a bath for the kids. Lovely walks would recommend, and we will be back again thank you for a lovely weekend.

Beautiful little gem!

As the campsite came into view my heart sank a little initially but once you’re onsite it’s a completely different atmosphere. We loved every moment of our carved-out tent space with just enough meadow in between campsites to feel privacy but also like you were in a community. The wildlife kept everyone entertained, every necessity and comfort was available and the on-site help was lovely. I can’t think how it could be improved upon. Ely town provided a fair bit of interest for everyone too. The cathedral is a nice experience. My only complaint is that we couldn’t find camp stove gas anywhere after realizing we would quickly run out.

Great campsite, very clean

Exceptionally laid out, the best we have ever stayed at and brilliant showers. This is what camping should be about. Very friendly too. We were made to feel very welcome. It's a bit of a walk into Ely, but a good walk. There are no cars on the site itself, so it's very safe and there are great facilities and places for children to explore.

Pretty good, excellent facilities, noisy roads

Really excellent facilities - amazing toilets and shower block for a campsite. Very reasonable price, really decent service on arrival. The grass pitches mowed into the meadow were nice and added some privacy. The fire pit built in was great. The only downside was nightime noise - quite close to a main road, and the noise from that carried across the fens, and continued through the night.

Response from Mad Hatters Campsite

Really pleased you enjoyed our site. Sometimes the noise does travel across - it depends on the wind direction, but we have got 2 hedges which will block out the noise when they grow bigger - just need them to grow faster!

A little taste of Ely wonderland

What a lovely few days stay at this delightful site. Facilities were regularly cleaned, even my teenage daughter was impressed! All staff were really lovely & accommodating, all in all a great vibe. We walked into Ely which I admit took a while but it was lovely taking in the sunset over the river on the way back. Ely itself is gorgeous, the cathedral is beautiful and we had a huge piece of cake & tea at the Almonry restaurant and gardens within the grounds. We also had food & drink at the Minster Tavern which was cheap & cheerful and we had the most helpful waitress ever! Another great experience was Hannam's Wake Hub, the Aqua Park just outside Ely. It was like total wipeout and it was fantastically organised & so much fun! We also visited Cambridge & of course went punting. We were in absolute awe of the architecture & history there. All in all what an amazing few days away, spending quality family time together & making memories. It didn’t cost the earth either!

Thank you - really pleased you enjoyed the area - Cambridge and Ely are lovely places

Superb site

We stayed 2 nights on a grass pitch and we were very impressed and glad we had booked Mad Hatters. The whole site is themed with Alice in Wonderland which we love and makes it a bit different. A lot of the pitches have their own clearly designated area with long wild grass dividing them up and giving you a defined space for your set up. The site is quiet and peaceful but within easy reach of Ely with plenty of shops etc. The washing and washing up facilities are all very clean and well provisioned. Little extras were free fire pits, a fridge/freezer free to use for cold blocks, free charging point for devices and wheel barrows to help move equipment from car to pitch. My children aged 14, 12 and 8 enjoyed roaming the small but wild site and flying kites on the grass play area. It felt very safe and friendly. We loved the eco consciousness as well, with lots of recycling bins and wildlife friendly wild planting. Overall I’d say we were very impressed and may well visit again.

Response from Mad Hatters Campsite

Really pleased you enjoyed our site, and the kite flying - our little hill works really well for kites

Great campsite, excellent facilities, friendly staff

We took our grandkids for a few days camping here. The site is child friendly and safe, clean and well organised. Despite the awful weather ( thunderstorms, and heavy downpours) the site didn’t become muddy underfoot as it is particularly well draining, an added bonus when taking refuge in your tent.. 😀. We had a very enjoyable time here, so good in fact that we wanted to extend our stay.... Will definitely be paying a return trip in the future..

An absolute hidden gem!

We had the the most perfect few days away at the mad hatters campsite. This was our first camping experience and it was wonderful. The site itself is so pretty with lovely wild flowers between each pitch which offers privacy for campers but it is equally a busy place so you are not too isolated. The washrooms were always clean and tidy with modern facilities. There were lots of little touches like communal plugs a communal fridge, dish washing areas and drinking water taps which was great. Also each pitch had its own fire pit and fire wood was available to buy from the reception so we were able to roast marshmallows until our eyes were bigger than our bellies! There was plenty of space for walking and exploring which my little boy absolutely loved. The town isn't too far away and has lots of lovely little shops and cafe's too although we could have quite happily stayed on site the entire time. There is a little play area on site which was lovely too. The staff were friendly and approachable. We had such a lovely time and would have stayed a few more days if we could have! We have already started discussing our plans to come back and we really can't wait. We would highly recommend this camping site. Thank you for a lovely stay xx

Great first family camping experience

Lovely sized campsite for our first time camping with our two young boys! Campsite itself felt very clean and the toilet/wash facilities were great. Loved that each pitch had its own fire pit and also the pitches were nicely spaced out. Great little play area for the children, only downside was the playing field had tents pitched in it so had to be mindful of the people camping there when playing. Overall I Would recommend!

Fabulous site - recommended

This campsite was a lovely find - the unusual pitch layout with wildflowers and plants surrounding mown circular pitches made for a wonderful private feel. Add the fire pit for your own campfire and management that clearly care about every detail of your stay and it makes an unbeatable experience. I have been camping for 30+ years, so it take a lot to impress me. Absolutely recommend!

Lovely little site

Just got back from a 4 night stay at this lovely clean site. The pitches are large and private surrounded by long wild grasses full of wildlife which the kids loved running around. The quirky Alice in wonderland theme was great for the kids. Ely itself is a lovely little city, I highly recommend Oliver Cromwells house and Ely cathedral. The Almory tea rooms at the back of the house is a must with fantastic views and gardens. We will definitely return

Perfect stay

We have stayed here 3 times in the last 12 months including storm Francis The campsite is perfectly set up for the camper all you need is perfectly set out. Pitch sizes are good for our 8x4m tent plus front extension. EHU of 16 amps had no issues. Located within easy reach of Ely and numerous tourist attractions such as Hunstanton snd many national trust attractions. We went to Wimpole estate, Anglesey Abbey and Ickworth house perfect for relaxing walks I can’t recommend this campsite any more than I have done already.

Idyllic country camping

We had three glorious days at Mad Hatters but even in bad weather it would be a, close to, perfect campsite. The huge wildflower meadow has round pitches dotted through it with winding paths which you can see children’s heads bobbing along, as they dart from the Mad Hatters ‘party shack’ (as our lot called it), to the play area and back to demand food! The electric pitches are beyond the meadow, as is the car park, shower/ washing up block and fridge/freezer but nothing is more than two minutes walk and there are wheelbarrows to tote your stuff. People respect the request to keep noise low after 10pm but because the pitches are spaced and the wildflowers block the sound, no one hears anyone else after the children are asleep. And they have fire pits and the best recycling I’ve seen. The shower block is cleaned three times a day and currently has a family of baby hedgehogs underneath, so you do have to watch out you don’t tread on their audience as you step out of the door! We mentioned two showers felt hotter than the 37C listed and they called the plumber in, and they took a walk around one evening just to check if everything was okay with all the campers. Honestly, the people who run this place are great and you won’t find a better place. We had a day in Thetford Forest, 30 minutes away, where the children did bungee jumping and ran around a sound trail like lunatics. Another day we forced them to experience some culture in Ely which, despite themselves, they really enjoyed and the icecream shop was delicious and catered for my niece’s multiple allergies. We didn’t make Wicken Fen, as we thought we’d fry in the 30C sun plus the boat trips were booked up but it looked worth a trip. After checking out, we had a tasty lunch at the Swan on the River pub at Littleport and could happily have lingered there all afternoon, if only we didn’t need to go home.

Response from Mad Hatters Campsite

Thank you for the lovely feedback  - really pleased you enjoyed our quirky site, wildlife and the area. Wicken fen is lovely if you get chance to return

Good for parties - not great for families

We stayed for the weekend with friends and we were welcomed by a girl who gave us the rules and told us how busy it was going to be. It’s a pretty setting with good facilities for camping but appeared to be booked for many hen weekends and birthdays and on the Friday everyone was loud but it wasn’t disruptive. On Saturday night we eventually asked our neighbours to keep it down at 3am as they were having a party. We didn’t want to do it earlier but tried to get hold of owners or managers by text and email but no one was available. The crowd next to us were very close and high on drugs (openly taking) screaming to music and their camp was no more than 5 metres from us - just separated by long grass. I can see how this place would be fun with a large group of friends but our children were scared in the night. We ended going for a walk instead. Another family tried to get hold of owners but they were not onsite.

Response from Mad Hatters Campsite

Thank you for the feedback - unfortunately when guests book online they do not admit they are planning any parties/ or gatherings. We want all guests to enjoy themselves whilst also respecting others. If we are aware of a group - we have a specific area for them in the bottom of the field - which is well away from the main wildflower pitches and has worked very well in the past.
Confirmation letters remind guests of the noise curfew and we have signs and rules around the campsite which ask guests to respect others and to stick to the 10pm music/ noise rule.
Once I was aware of the disruption I asked the guests to leave but unfortunately it was too late - the damage had been done. So sorry you didn't enjoy your Saturday evening.

Tranquility at it's best!

My sister and I booked 2 if the timber tents for our families. Our daughters absolutely loved it! The whole place is clean and tidy with lots of recycling and composting of waste. The toilets and showers were brilliant and clean ( Thank you Regina) and the host Claire was welcoming and lovely. We chose a great week as it was practically empty so had the whole place to ourselves. The kids ran off and played for ages and we even managed the 50 minute walk to Ely via the canal. Great place! Definitely visting again

couldn't have felt more welcomed

We loved being surrounded by meadow while camping, it made the site feel very intimate. You can tell the owners are nature lovers from all the new trees planted to the range of things you can recycle there, including food waste! We couldn't have felt more welcomed and the facilities was spotless. There was never a queue even with covid restrictions meaning a smaller number of people could use the loos / showers at the same time. There were lots of places to play and explore for kids. I wish you could rate it 4.5 stars, the only down side was the noise from the trains / road, and that the washing up station could have been a bit more open (they are a little bit dingy).

Mad hatters revisited

Last year 2 of us arrived at mad hatters on our motorbikes. Friendly professional guest check in ( temperature check etc ) then directed to all facilities on site. The peg plan is great on the shower/toilet block showing if anyone is using which part! Settled in on our pitches and fired up the pits with the bag of logs purchased on site. So good was our stay I decided to book again this year for end of May. Car and 6 man tent this time round! Once again all COVID rules adhered to and a perfect couple of days spent there. Toilet block is super clean and showers a perfect temperature. Plenty of recycling bins near reception as is fresh water supply. Use the “what three words” listed by mad hatters and you’ll arrive precisely in the right place for a camp trip on a site I feel that no one could ever put a complaint about! A quiet very well run and maintained site!! Well done mad hatters… definitely be rebooking!

Idyllic view, great first experience solo camping

This was my first time solo camping, and the Mad Hatters Campsite was a great place for a middle-aged woman to try this and feel safe, even during Covid. Stunning view of Ely Cathedral, small birds and butterflies, good sized pitches with wildflowers and firepits, others around but at a distance, well organised and equipped, peaceful, friendly setting. Showers were great. Ideally more toilets for campers would be good, but appreciate this portaloo is a fallback specially put in to make possible this first stage of the Covid easing, and well handled. Thank you Mad Hatters, I'll be back.

Lovely themed simple camping experience

Our break was the first week in October, and of course it was a cold experience, but the site is lovely - the concept of Alice in Wonderland - and was greatly enjoyed by our 3 girls. We had the "run of the site" with only 2 other groups staying that week. We look forward to booking again, hopefully with a group of our friends. Really nice site and local area - including being a dog friendly location.

Excellent camping experience

All other campsites should take note of how well designed and run this place is. The shower / washroom block is first class with hot showers and lots of space. Having a fire pit on each pitch made it easy to have our evening camp fires. The meadow grass surrounding each pitch have extra privacy. The recycling facilities were exceptional covering everything from food to Pringles packets. Claire was really helpful and delivered some fire wood to our pitch whilst we were away for the day. Lots of Covid-precautions were in place making us feel Covid-secure. Despite the rain we had a fun stay with the 3-mile walk into Ely enabling plenty to do during the days locally.

Lovely campsite with great facilities

The campsite was really well set up and I loved the individual pitches, with plenty of room for a large tent, gazebo, wind breaks outside area etc, much nicer that’s scrambling for a pitch at a first come first serve campsite. The facilities were also very good with large shower rooms and clean toilets, along with good washing up facilities! It also had some lovely communal spaces like a large wooden shelter and children’s play area and grassy area! Really lovely campsite, perfect for families or groups!

Great camping & wonderful wildlife

We had a lovely two-night stay in sweltering weather and loved our stay. Loved the safe, vehicle-free nature of the campsite and really enjoyed all the birds (starlings?) that obviously loved all the wildflowers around the pitches and the young trees that have been planted. It will be cool to return again in a few years time and see the trees when they have grown and there is a mini woodland next to the campsite! We cycled to Ely one day for a walk around and drove to Cambridge another day. Felt very safe with all the Covid measures the campsite had in place and Claire & Brian were super friendly and helpful. Thanks to Brian for a good recommendation for somewhere to go swimming in the river. Recommended, especially for families!

Enjoyable stay

We stayed from Monday 24th until 28th August. On arrival Claire met us and took our temperatures before being allowed on site which reassured us. Claire explained the site set up and procedure for COVID 19 using a peg system for the washrooms. We thought it was a great idea. The pitches are not close at all giving you a sense of privacy. We had the use of a fire pit which was great for toasting marshmallows. Claire and the team are extremely friendly and contactable throughout our stay. Storm Francis tried its best to ruin a perfect camping trip, fortunately we were experienced enough to work our way through the storm. No damage to our tent. If you are looking for peace and quiet this is the campsite for you, I could not recommend the campsite any higher. We have already decided to return next year.

We had the perfect stay at Mad Hatters. The site was really charming and the facilities were lovely. The staff were so accommodating for our group, and really looked after us. They seemed to be taking the Covid systems they have put in place very seriously which made us feel at ease. Site is perfectly located to the town and supermarkets etc. We would definitely stay again.

Wet but lovely weekend!

Lovely campsite, we camped in the main field in tents. The non-hook up pitches were all nicely set out and surrounded by wild flowers with walkways between. Plenty of space on each pitch for large tents and gazebos (life saver given that we had a weekend of showers!). The toilet and shower facilities were perfect, very clean and warm, they were deep cleaned once a day between 1PM and 2PM. The COVID precautions were very visible and the peg system for the toilet blocks worked well. Showers can get quite busy in the mornings but easy to avoid if you shower later in the day. Lovely warm welcome when we arrived, easy to find our spot. Even when camped at the far end it is not too far a walk to the toilets. Fire pits on all pitches and firewood available to purchase from reception. Great area for walking, highly recommend this campsite.

Lovely weekend

Thoroughly enjoyed our weekend. Warm welcome and a temperature test on arrival, with an explanation of the peg system to ensure social distancing in the toilet and shower facilities. Speaking of which, there was plenty of hot water and nice to have hooks for clothing. The family shower rooms were ideal and everything kept clean. Our non electric pitch had plenty of room and of course a fire pit. The wild flowers surrounding each pitch must have been glorious earlier in the year. Overall, the site was very clean and tidy with lots of recycling. There's a 10pm noise curfew and it was adhered to. Staff very friendly (and free phone charging!) We left very happy campers.

Lovely weekend

We had a lovely weekend. Non-electric pitch with plenty of room and of course a fire pit. Warm welcome and temperature check on arrival and an explanation of the peg system, ensuring social distancing in the toilet and shower facilities. Speaking of which, lovely hot showers, with lots of hooks for clothing and some had stools as well. Emphasis on recycling and a very clean and tidy site. The wild flowers around all pitches must have been stunning earlier in the year. All staff very friendly (and free phone charging!) There is a 10pm noise cut off and was definitely adhered to the weekend we stayed. Although the Mad Hatters theme was unfamiliar to our 4 year old grandson, he loved me telling the story. Very happy campers!

Lovely campsite with a good feel and close to Ely

Plenty of room for each pitch, lovely waking up and watching the birds and wildlife around the site. Facilities are good and clean with everyone being helpful. Enjoyed my stay and would definitely book again.

Extra special campsite

We loved this campsite, it had nice big pitches and it was so lovely having all the wild grasses surrounding the pitches. The toilets and showers were clean and tidy and the extras such as campfires and recycling were a bonus but it also had a magical adventure feel as the pathways took you to places you didn’t know.

Pleasant surprise in the fens

We stayed as a base to visit family so didn't know what to expect. The long gravel road in was a bit off-putting but the site turned out to be great. The wild flower borders give a lovely feel to the pitches. Facilities are clean etc - showers were hot. Claire was very helpful. The site is quite small in a good way. The clear eco emphasis and the Mad Hatter styling were both very welcome. We may well be back. Anywhere with fire pits gets our vote.

Fantastic Campsite!

We loved our weekend at Mad Hatters! The site is spacious and doesn’t feel crowded. The staff were so friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The facilities were kept exceptionally clean and the “peg system” to ensure everything was safe and COVID-secure worked really well. Beautiful surrounding fields and areas for flying kites, playing cricket etc. The kids loved it. We will certainly be back!!

Fantastic Campsite! loved it.

We visited here this weekend. The campsite was full, but the layout meant it didn't feel that way. I loved the way the pitches are all random and surrounded by wild flowers. Really nicely done. Very pretty area. Fantastic showers :) Fire pits to borrow - just need to buy the wood. Camp fires for the win always! We could only get two nights here but will return for longer next time. Its a really lovely place with a lovely feel. Thank you Mad Hatters :) if you book a tent with non electric you cannot drive your car to the pitch, just something to be aware of - however they have plenty of wheel barrows to get your bits to your pitch and its not far from the car park.

Fantastic stay

We had a great time camping here, beautiful site which feels very spacious. You are surrounded by copious wild flowers interspersed with seashell pathways. The walk into Ely is quite a trek, took us over an hour, but is a pleasant walk along the river and through meadows.... if you avoid the main roads. The only slight criticism is the lack of washing up facilities, two sinks when the campsite is full would be a challenge I think. Overall a wonderful place and have already booked a return visit.

Response from Mad Hatters Campsite

Thank you for the feedback - really pleased you are returning and enjoyed our site. There are several routes into Ely - I think I need to take photos of the places to turn for the most direct path. Its going on my to-do list this winter! I will look into added another area for washing up sinks - its always useful to know where we can tweak things. Claire

Fantastic campsite. Can not fault anything. Peaceful, clean, well looked after. We stayed in the King of hearts, it was a great first glamping experience. Great time had by all 3 of us. The facilities were some of the best I've come across over my many years of camping. Lots of happy faces All the staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely be going back, we intend to try the camping side and most definitely the Queen of hearts, looks amazing (the little one won't be coming with us that weekend!)

So pleased you think our glamping and campsite was lovely. The Queen of Hearts is my favourite - more so over winter when its cold outside and the log burner is going. Claire

Idyllic campsite with excellent facilities and Covid-safe measures

We (5 x adults) have just returned from a wonderful weekend at Mad Hatters. The site is beautiful - with individual pitches (ours was spacious for 3 x 3 man tents) carved out among stunning wildflower meadows, meaning you aren't right next to other groups. Claire and her team were all incredibly friendly and helpful, washroom facilities were spotless and regularly cleaned and sanitised - and clear, robust Covid-19 measure were in place, including limiting numbers in washroom blocks at one time and plenty of soap and sanitiser. It was easy to socially distance at all times and all guest had their temperature taken by a staff member before getting out of the car. The atmosphere and ethos of the site was really lovely, with a fantastic recycling system, clear love of and respect for nature, and a lot of attention to detail. We had a lovely walk in to Ely (around 1 hour) along walking routes almost completely off-road. Great to know this is here in easy reach of London - we will definitely be back!

A beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean campsite

We camped at Mad Hatters for two nights this week and loved the site. The camping pitches are large, well separated and surrounded by grasses and flowers to give extra privacy. All the non hook-up pitches have their own fire pits. The campsite is spotlessly clean. The toilets and showers are cleaned 3 times a day, with plenty of constant hot water. All Covid-19 protective measures are in place, with lots of hand sanitiser posts, and numbers are restricted in the toilet/shower block at all times. Claire and Brian were so welcoming and have put such care into making the campsite a relaxing and comfortable place to stay. We'd definitely return!

Great campsite

A lovely setting with large pitches nestled in amongst the wild flowers. Excellent facilities, very clean with plenty of space. A nice walk into Ely along the river takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Wicken Fen is a short drive away and worth a visit, as well as Thetford Forest and Cambridge.
