Trickly riverside camping in the green heart of a Grand Duchy

Think of Luxembourg and you think of, well, not very much really. At first blush it’s one of those anonymous little places with little to boast about – no famous sports stars or A-list celebs in rehab and not even a laughably poor record in the Eurovision Song Contest to spice up their image. They’ve won it five times. Perhaps the most interesting fact about the country is that its area is 999 square miles. But out into the countryside of the Ardennes, tucked away in the trees in the valley of the Clerve river, you’ll find some of the finest acreage of that 999 square miles – the little goldmine of Val d’Or in Enscherange.

The friendly Dutch owners took over the site in 1991 and have turned it into an enchanting little oasis of greenery, with a river running through it, which is perfect for kids to play in. There’s room to pitch by the river or, over a wooden footbridge, there are more spacious pitches hidden away behind high hedges, if you fancy a little peace and quiet.

Not that the place is a riot at the best of times. The village has a population of 140 and the old bar that once tickled locals into a lively evening sing-along has since closed its doors. But its only a 5 minute drive to neighbouring Drauffelt, where a pleasant patisserie and a chinese restaurant have taken over the reigns – no singing though I'm afraid. If you're willing to travel a little further, then Clervaux is the best way to bolster your choices and enjoy some of the more traditional Luxembourg cuisine. A cluster of shops and eateries are resided over by the old, whitewashed castle, also home to the word famous photo exhibition “The family of man”.

The facilities are good – though you need a digital gizmo from reception (for which there’s a €25 refundable deposit) in order to get any hot water. Charge it up with cash and watch the balance on it decrease at a rate of €0.03 every 10 seconds. That’s if you don’t get soap in your eyes from trying to shampoo too quickly. There’s everything you need right onsite for a bit of family fun. There’s the river, for a start, and loads of play areas with various swings, and so on. But the real star is a wooden and metal water feature: prime the pump and water flows into various channels and turns water wheels. It will keep the kids quiet for hours. A railway line runs right by the campsite. To be fair, it’s not that busy – they’re mainly local trains and they don’t run at night – but it’s a bit of a downer.

Grab a train from Wilwerwiltz main station and enjoy the scenic journey into the country's capital, Luxembourg City (a dayticket only costs €4). As you'd expect around these parts it's a small and compact place, with a wonderfully walkable centre. Make sure you visit the Grand Duke's Palace (00352 4796 2709), the monarch's official residence, smack-bang in the middle of town and open for tours in summertime.

Food & Drink

Sadly there are no longer any eateries in the village. The nearest supermarket is in Marnach where there is an Aldi and a Carrefour, so it’s best to stock up there and self-cater.

The Owner Says

Nice to know that Val d'Or means Golden Valley, named after the beautiful yellow broom in the spring, on gently sloping slopes. The terrain is located in a beautiful area with a varied landscape at two nature parks where you can start beautiful walks directly from the campsite.
Nature is important to us and we do our best to deal with this so that we can offer good quality. We are therefore happy that we have had the Ecolabel for many years and after having won a prize we even received the golden award.
We hope that Camping Val d'Or can be a place for many people to relax and contemplate and to smell, hear and see the proximity of nature. Alternating with all sorts of movements with walking, Nordic walking, mountain biking, cycling and further afield with canoeing, it completely takes you away from the daily dormancy. A warm welcome!!!

Getting There

It’s about an hour’s drive from the city of Luxembourg. Head up the A7 through Ettelbruck and on to Hosingen. Follow the signs for Enscherange and as you reach the village the entrance to the site is on the right over the railway line. Parking is at the other end of the campsite. There are half hourly trains to/from Luxembourg city (45 mins) on the main line to Liege/Luik in Belgium. The station is under a mile (1.5 km) from the camping. The owners can pick you up if you contact them and arrange something in advance.

A real gem

A picturesque campsite at the bottom of a valley with a small, slow river flowing through the grounds. It was quiet when we visited in August and we had the choice of many pitches. Although we were in hammocks, the owners were very accommodating and incredibly helpful. We will definitely return!

Beautiful, very well run sitr

Lovely site with a small brook running through it. That and the impressive play facilities kept our kids entertained. Lots to do nearby. Thank you for the tips on where to cycle : very pretty, traffic-free routes. Engaging owners clearly devoted to their site. Highly recommended, will stay for longer next time!
