Idyllic, peaceful, riverside camping for adults

The River Charente is a languidly meandering waterway with its own unique charms. Once decreed by no higher authority than French monarch François I as 'the most beautiful stream in the kingdom', La Charente snakes its way through some of south-west France's most ancient counties. It is also where visitors to this enchanting corner of the country can find one of the region's loveliest campsites, Camp Laurent.

When expat Tracey and Pete first laid eyes on the Poitou-Charente, it was love at first sight. Setting up camp (quite literally) in the summer of 2013, Their vision was of a tranquil retreat– easily achievable due to the adult's only admittance policy.

Nestled in eight unspoilt acres just outside the sleepy village of St-Laurent-de-Ceris, Camp Laurent has ample room for just 10 emplacements all with electric hook-ups. The pitches overlook the river and valley below, while butterflies, rabbits and the odd roe deer dominate the scene. Facilities are more than adequate with wet-room style bathrooms featuring hot-showers, modern toilets, laundry and a washing-up adjacent to the 200-year old stone barn. With the river on your doorstep, you could be forgiven for neglecting the brand new, open-air, wood-panelled pool – just the ticket for cooling off in France's second sunniest region.

With the ever changing levels of our river in recent times, fishing and canoeing are only available when conditions allow. the campsite boasts 400 metres of tranquil waterside frontage. It still makes an ideal base to fish the Charente's abundant trout, pike, perch and eels. You can still dip your toes in for a lazy paddle, while cruise boats can be taken in more capaciously fluvial sections upstream – a great way to explore the idyllic nearby towns and villages. You'll take in such famous names as Angoulême, Saint-Savinien, and Cognac – yes, the very same. Just be sure to appoint a designated skipper for the return leg.

Camp Laurent offers a large tree-lined camping meadow located at the top of a bank overlooking the River Charente and a beautiful oak woodland. We want to ensure that Camp Laurent provides the very best for it's campers. We have excellent facilities that will cater for all your needs, we also strive to run a clean as well as friendly, welcoming campsite. Whether you're here to kick back, relax and unwind enjoying the peaceful campsite atmosphere or even if you’re here to make the most of the many activities on offer in the region (including chateaux visits, beautiful old french villages, markets, cycling, kayaking, ), we’ll do our very best to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Our campsite facilities include: 10 Spacious pitches offering views over the wooded valley and the River Charente. 3 luxury bathroom-style toilet and shower facilities, including lots of free hot water. Drinking water. 6amp electric hook-up. Grey water and toilet waste dump points. A lovely outdoor washing-up area under our beautiful old oak tree. Our brand new Visitors Cabin, where we keep our tourist information, books, magazines, cycle and walking maps, fridge, freezer and washing machine facilities. The beautiful above ground pool, essential for those long hot days. A short meandering path down to the River Charente where you can fish, enjoy the campsite canoe, walk your dog, or simply read a book, with the feeling you have stepped back in time. Bike rental via Bikehire Direct to enjoy the many cycle routes include route 48 that passes right by our entrance. Low level solar lighting throughout the site to allow you enjoy the beautiful panoramic skies and the stars at night. Our local village of St Laurent de Ceris offers a Boulangerie and lovely French Restaurant.

Natural Spacious Tree Lined Pitch
Really peaceful, plenty of space and good facilities, including the pool to cool off in the heat. Tracy helped us out with some milk after we bought the wrong stuff in the supermarket!

Camp Laurent was excellent, quiet and friendly with plenty of space for our caravan and awning. A lovely adult only site with a nice pool which was perfect for cooling off during the hot weather. Lucy and Pete were extremely helpful and very friendly.

We just posted this up on Google and reckoned it should go here also. We meant to post a review many times before now and still feel guilty for not doing so. Sorry Tracey/Pete! :-( It's corrected now we hope 2022 has arrived and the pandemic is easing, so looking forward to getting back this wonderful campsite in June. We were first there a few years ago and have visited twice since, last time was just pre-pandemic. We normally spend a week as it is the most relaxing place we have found in France to break our journey during our travels. Adults only so nice and quiet, very friendly and helpful owners, very clean facilities and good sized pool. Never had any problems of any sort. The Charante river at the bottom of the site is really nice to chillout by the side of (kingfishers and coypu to watch occasionally) The surrounding area is great for nature walks/cycles (bring binoculars for the birdlife) because the wonderful French access laws let you wander between fields and small tracks abound! The small restaurant and boulangerie in Laurent are worth a visit and to test your French vocab. Book it for two nights and when you find you stay for much longer you'll know you've discovered the magic of the place.

We thought we would give this site a try as it is advertised as Adult Only, and we were not disappointed. Fantastically peaceful, with plenty of space for the pitches (only 10 pitches in a huge field). Tracy and Pete’s new dog Stella is very friendly and loved running around with our 2 retrievers. With other dogs there as well we found it very dog friendly, providing they are well behaved. The river was a favourite of course for the dogs, and the above ground pool perfect to cool down (don’t be fooled by it feeling cold, it is so refreshing once in and we did not want to get out). The local boulangerie must have closed as the nearest is in St Laurent, about 4 km away. But it is closed Wednesday and then St Claud is the next nearest. The local restaurant is very good, but note it is closed Tues evening and all day Wed. A very relaxing week spent there, before returning to the delights of Brittany campsites and all that entails. But thank you Tracy and Pete, we will definitely come back if we are in the area (and pick up our Carrefour carrier bag) - enjoy the Cider, I hope it turns out ok.

Just returned from a beautiful week in the Charente at camp Laurent . Great site, enjoyed the peace and quiet and the huge plot, plenty of space for each pitch. Very clean facilities and the plunge pool was a bonus. Great place for cycling and walking if you’re feeling energetic, thank you Tracy and Pete

Last year after suffering from bouncing balls in Brittany along with an un-swimmable swimming pool, we sought out one of the few adults-only campsites in France, Camp Laurent. We certainly made the right decision as this site was wonderfully tranquil. After we'd both had a year to forget at work we were more in need of relaxation than ever and this was the perfect place to do nothing - we only left the site to get food and take our dog to the vet (helpfully booked for us by Tracey). Thankfully the weather was hot and sunny, so hot that the pool felt very cool initially but was wonderful for cooling down and really invigorating after dozing off while sunbathing around the caravan. There is good space between the small number of pitches so you're not even disturbed at night when fellow campers are outside their tents/vans talking/eating/whatever. The fairly level pitches can be quite far from the hook-up posts but there are extension cables to use. The showers/loos are very nice - they were always clean. The washing-up facilities even had cleaning brushes and washing-up liquid provided - a nice touch. The river's water quality seemed to be suffering from a hot summer and it didn't look very inviting except to Ted, our Border Terrier who would dive in for an afternoon swim and chase sticks. Among the other tents, motorhomes, and caravans there were quite a few dogs but all were well behaved. We were there at the same time as the previous two reviewers, Claire & Andy, and Fran & Dan - hi guys! Finally, the ultimate recommendation: we're returning next year.

From the host
Tracey, Pete and our little French Bulldog Stella would like to welcome you to Camp Laurent. Camp Laurent is a place that has been lovingly created to offer camping exclusively for grown-ups (but not too grown up!). Stella would love to invite friendly dogs to join us at Camp Laurent and make some friends along the way. We spent many years looking for campsites to visit that offered a peaceful, tranquil, scenic ambiance and allowed us to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This is why we decided to move to this beautiful region of France and set up camp, with Camp Laurent. We have always used the Cool Camping guide to find those little hidden gems, so we were obviously inspired to be part of it and why we created this little place we call Camp Laurent as well as our new home. If you are seeking a little oasis of peace and relaxation this is certainly a place you can fall in love with. To wake up every morning to the beautiful panoramic view over the valley while watching the Birds of prey gliding over the woodland and river that borders our site. For those of you who love wildlife we have an array of beautiful butterflies, damsel flies and even the odd firefly which glow in the evening. Not to mention the uplifting sound of bird call at sunrise and sunset. Our philosophy is for people to have freedom... while using common sense and courtesy. We have no rules at Camp Laurent. No allocated pitches, no curfew on the pool (a midnight swim in the pool can be quite nice in the hot summer months). Ok, when I say we have no rules, that's not including the one rule: to enjoy Camp Laurent! At Camp Laurent we have room for 10 very spacious places to camp. Our lovely pool is only ever a few degrees below ambient temperature so very nice to cool off in while enjoying more of that lovely panoramic view, which is at its most breathtaking here. Our toilet facilities are held to the highest standard with a ladies and gents wet room style bathrooms with plenty of space to prepare for the relaxing day ahead. We can arrange bike hire for you so you may explore the area more intimately. Or why not wile away the hours with some fishing or canoeing on the river that borders our site. Camp Laurent is not just a campsite but our home. We hope you can make it your home from home and enjoy all that the French way of life and it's beautiful surroundings have to offer.
Nearby attractions

There are plenty of cycling and walking routes in the surrounding area including route 48 which is on Camp Laurent's doorstep. The River Charente offers a wealth of great activities including canoeing, fishing or simply taking a leisurely barge cruise. The Lacs de Haute Charente and River Vienne promise similar waterside fun – including a beach. If you're visiting in August, the nearby town of Confolens hosts its annual world music festival. The 5-day summer event attracts around 30,000 visitors per year! Confolens itself is beautiful, intersected by the idyllic River Vienne and two historic bridges. The Château de Rochechouart and the castle at La Rochefoucauld are also well worth a visit, as are the ruins at Ordour-su-Glane, preserved after the village's annihilation in Word War II. If it's educational thrills you seek, the Futuroscope (0033 549 495 906) theme park and La Vallée des Singes monkey park (0033 549 872 020) make a great day out, while those visiting in September should head to Angoulême for the annual Circuit des Remparts, a historic race circuit that's still completed by classic cars on some of the oldest streets in the city. The camp is also ideally located to explore Bordeaux, Dordogne, Limousin and La Rochelle.

Food and drink

In the local village of Saint Laurent de Ceris just 4kms away there is a bakery and restaurant called Le Saint Laurent (0033 545 715 496) There are also lots of little surrounding villages that offer an authentic French culinary experience. Several large supermarkets can be found in Roumazieres-Loubert and in Confolens. For something really up market, drive 10 minutes to the Michelin-starred restaurant Le Grange aux Oies (0033 545 718 124), set in a fairytale-looking château . About 40 minutes' drive away in the region capital Angoulême, you'll find an eclectic, trendy mix of places to eat and drink. La Ruelle (033 545 951 519) is an eccentrically decorated restaurant in a converted transport depot. It serves refined French cuisine with a contemporary twist. No visit to the region could be complete without sampling Cognac's famous brandy and the town's lesser-known aperitif, pineau. Try some Limousin boeuf too if you get a chance – bon appétit.
