Yelloh! VIllage Camping Les Gorges …

16220 Eymouthiers, Nouvelle-Aquitaine
1 acre hosted by Chambon ?.
28 hectares of tranquil, woodland-bordered meadows beside the meandering river Tardoire

Straddling the border of the Charente and Dordogne regions and nestled inside a meander of the tranquil river Tardoire, Les Gorges du Chambon is a family-friendly campsite that makes the most of its scenic location. Despite its vast 28 hectares (and 132 pitches), there's a real sense of intimacy to the campsite – an infectious atmosphere of neighbourly bonhomie spread by easy-going hosts Pascal and Lidewij.

The whole feng shui of the site is geared towards convivial camping, from the amply-spaced pitches, to the children's playground, to the Romanesque courtyard central hub housing the restaurant and shop in charming, traditional ivy-clad stone barns.

There’s a smorgasbord of activities onsite and off to keep you (and the little campers) occupied. The spacious swimming pool is open all day, though if you fancy a swim, go wild and head down to the riverside or one of the local lakes (Lavaud, St. Estèphe or St. Mathieu) where you can also enjoy a range of other water sports. Tennis courts, crazy golf and a volleyball court will keep sporting campers busy while, if you’re feeling a little more extreme, Pascal and Lidewij can arrange an introduction to hang-gliding – now that's a view that takes some beating.

From Les Gorges du Chambon's secluded riverside locale, a network of inviting footpaths and easily navigable cycle routes (bikes can be hired from reception) spread out across an area noted for its vibrant flora and fauna. The whole of Poitou-Charentes is positively abuzz with wildlife, from the farmlands of the North Charente, the lakes to the East, the forests of the Horte-Tardoire, to the sprawling National Park of the Périgord Limousin. Les Gorges du Chambon is in fact a designated place of interest for France's equivalent of the RSPB, the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux. So be sure to bring your Sibley's Birding Basics.

This idyllic French countryside, of course, goes hand in hand with traditional French markets. Whatever day of the week you'll find a market brimming with local produce to suit. The renowned weekly market of Piegut is 10km away and Chateau De La Rochefoucauld, in the titular bustling village, is a similar distance in the opposite direction. The campsite even hosts its own weekly evening market featuring an artisan foie gras producer, a Pineau maker, pancakes and galettes, plus lots of other lovely organic goodies.

The area is perhaps most famous for its fine wine and nearby, in the village of Charente Perigord, are the caves of Saint Sornin, one of France's oldest vineyards. The short tour here is essential, not least for the complementary tipple of their world class Gamay. Pascal and Lidewij can also arrange tours of the famous nearby Remy Martin Cognac vineyard. Soak up the setting via the small train, taking in the vines, the stills and the cellars, finishing with, of course, a tasting session of the eminent brandy.

So whether you fancy a guided tour through the libraries of Chateau De La Rochefoucauld or tree climbing at the local "acrobranche" centre, or simply embracing Mother Nature beside the gentle babbling of the Tardoire, Les Gorges du Chambon makes the ideal tranquil campsite base.
