Vistas over the Loire Valley and a mixture of shady camping pitches

Imagine your tick list for a camping holiday. Peace and quiet; family friendly; space between you and your fellow campers to enjoy some World Heritage-standard scenery? Now throw in bike riding along the Loire Valley, wine tasting in local vineyards, excellent facilities and, mon Dieu, you've got Huttopia Saumur .

Set on the hillside overlooking the Loire and the forest beyond, Huttopia Saumur  comprises 120 amply-spaced pitches that really give you a sense of being close to nature. You can choose the size of pitch you prefer, ranging from the most modest (but no less comfortable) Nature to a ma-hoo-sive XXL. Though for our money, savvy campers should bag the pitches overlooking the Loire itself. If you prefer your camping a little more luxe, there are also wooden chalets, cottages, lodge tents and Bengali tents to rent.

While Huttopia Saumur does include all the bells and whistles, peace and tranquility can be yours should you book your stay for the low season. But if you're wanting to make use of all the fabulous facilities (including a free kids club), book for July and August. Three swimming pools (one heated), a miniature farm, children's play area, bike hire and even a free weekly wine tasting should keep everyone entertained. A small onsite shop takes care of all those essential campsite provisions like freshly-baked bread for the morning. You'll also find a bar and a brasserie.

Venture just 6km down the road to the historic town of Saumur and you'll find a great choice of restaurants, bars and a market. The town is also home to one of the region's more impressive châteaux, a world famous equestrian centre, and the Loire's finest vineyards (it would be downright rude not sample some, now wouldn't it?). The Loire Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason and, although there are no shortage of ways to savour its delights, we suggest you pack a picnic, get on your bike, find a secluded spot and soak up the scene.

The Classic IV Tent - f2aa
Fabulous easy camping
Lovely site, with excellent amentities and a very well supplied tent. It was clean and comfortable throughout. The showers and bathroom facilities were clean and plentiful. The pools were really nice. We didn't eat in the cafe there, but it seemed well used. The tents were great (although lacked a kettle), liveable in rain or shine and the beds comfy. It is quite a busy site, but we didn't feel too crammed in or overlooked by neighbours. The views over the Loire (unfortunately not from our tent) were lovely and the area is rich in all sorts of castles, activities, towns etc. Well worth a visit.

Pitch with electricity
My family (with 2 kids under 10) spent a wonderful 3 nights camping at Huttopia Saumur. The staff were warm and welcoming and the pitches were leafy and spacious. The facilities were great (particularly the pools during the very hot weather) and the communal area with its amazing views over the Loire River. Highly recommended

Pitch with electricity
Stayed for 12 nights in a tent and had a fabulous time. A little bit out of Saumur but overlooking the river. We had some lovely sunsets and great star gazing. The pitch was spacious and well shaded. The ground is hard so be prepared for pegs sticking out. We can’t praise the facilities enough. Toilets and showers are spotless, plenty of them and water is very hot. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Pizzas to take out were a bonus on our first night and there is a small shop. We hired bikes for a couple of days and cycled along the Loire a Velo route which is outstanding. You can get on to it really close to the site and then it’s a very safe and relatively flat ride. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The hire bikes are excellent with good gears for the few inclines. We’d highly recommend the site and will be using them again elsewhere.

Stayed with family of 5. Kids 3-8 yrs. Plenty to keep the kids entertained, with outdoor and (heated) covered pools. Bike rides, pony tours and other activities in the daytime. Evening live music and the best magician I’ve ever seen as the evening entertainment. Would defo come again.

The Loire Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with good reason. Canoe expeditions, cycling, and visits to local vineyards can all be arranged through the site. Visit the historic town of Saumur 6km away to see the stunning château and the world-famous Cadre Noir National Equestrian Centre.

Food and drink

There's an onsite bar/brasserie with a sun terrace. You can also order takeaway. The small grocers shop is stocked with fresh bread baked and other local produce, including wine from the vineyard, and boasts a vegetable garden for fresh seasonal fruit and veg. For a night on the town, head to Bistrot Les Tontons (0033 2 41 59 59 40) in Saumur for tasty regional fare and local vino.
