Peaceful, spacious tranquillity with a spectacular backdrop. You half expect Julie Andrews to come running out of the woods in a habit.

There’s something very wholesome about Camping La Source. Firstly, there’s the air. Clean, pure breezes roll off the mountains and filter through the trees to fill every inch of expansive sky that dominates this charming campsite. Secondly, with a manageable 25 plots, it’s never crowded, which explains the tranquillity. Birdsong and crickets provide a steady background chatter, adding to the all-natural ambience. A walk through the campsite’s woods reveals a surprising variety of trees, including pine, cherry, lime, and walnut, but the stars of this woodland show are the giant sequoias. These towering trees are genuinely impressive; their thick trunks rising from the pine- needle-strewn ground so high that you have to crane your neck to follow them.

The purified atmosphere extends to the nightlife. You won’t find any nightclubs here, but there are bars at the Auberge de la Tour, Saint Pierre D’Argençon, (2 km), and Aspres-sur-Buëch (7 km), but venture a little further afield to Veynes or Serres, (about 15 minutes drive), and you will find popular village centres where the locals and visitors alike, prop up the bars and sit outside in the warm summer evenings. The sleepiness of the local villages perpetuates the calm back at La Source, where you will find there is no light pollution. So why not try your own star gazing night at La Source? Stock up with wine lay out in the open spaces and gaze - fantastic jet black skies, unbelievable stars, and shooting stars, (regular occurrence).

Whether you’re just relaxing or using the campsite as a base for hiking from one picturesque village to the next, and fishing or swimming in the lakes, the wholesome hat trick that greets you every morning is the view. Whichever plot you pick, you’ll be overlooked by mountains close enough to glide from – a fact that some hang- gliding regulars take advantage of by flying from the peak and landing right back at their tents.

The Owner Says

(info supplied by the campsite)

As new owners we’d love to welcome you to La Source. Located against the stunning backdrop of the French Alpes, on the northern borders of Provence, the Hautes Alpes is the ideal location for a relaxing break or action packed activity holiday. The region offers a huge variety of outdoor activities for each season and the mountain scenery is truly awe inspiring.

The magnificent Jouffan Mountains (1564 metres), tower above La Source and provide a superb backdrop to the two hectares of stunning wood and grasslands that surround us. Our woodlands are dominated by some superb examples of giantsequoia trees cherry, pine, lime, walnut and many others and with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year makes the La Source a wonderful and tranquil place to relax and unwind.

Alternatively, with mountains, lakes, rivers and trails under a vast and often cloudless sky, the French Hautes Alpes offers one of Europe’s undiscovered outdoor playgrounds. Activities and adventures abound and the region offers some of the best mountain biking, cycling, winter and water sports available in Europe. In partnership with local companies and expert guides we can arrange a variety of activities to ensure that your stay is a memorable and thoroughly exhilarating one. From the modest beginner to the truly adventurous, the Hautes Alpes offers something for everyone, there are so many activities to choose from you could holiday here in each season and still find something different to do.

The GR94 national walking route runs beside La Source, and our site is an ideal refuge for walkers on this popular year round long-distance route. The hang-gliding centre, La Longeagne is above La Source on the Jouffan Mountains, and there is an allocated landing field nearby at Saint Pierre D’Argençon. The two local airfields in Aspres-sur Buech andSerres  (just 6km away) offer Gliding, parachuting and hang gliding. Motor cyclists and car clubs will also find the winding secluded roads up the many mountain passes, an exhilarating driving experience.

The campsite is open mid April until mid October. Our 25 pitches nestle in 5 acres of beautiful wood and grassland all suitable for tents, caravans and motorhomes/campervans. We have electric hook up points, hot water showers and toilets onsite, as well as washing up facilities, Fridge/Freezer and a washing machine.

We also have 3 luxury appointed Tipi’s, each with beds/linen, wooden flooring, rugs, fridge, lighting, gas BBQ and everything you need to enjoy an alternative camping experience, one Tipi even has a sofa and coffee table.

Generally we’re quite relaxed about departure times, but during peak periods (June/July/August) we do ask that pitches are vacated by 12 noon on the day of departure. Unfortunately due to the fire risk, campfires or charcoal BBQ’s are not permitted but we have a large charcoal BBQ which is available for  campers to use, of course gas BBQ’s can be used on all pitches.

New for 2015 La Source will have it’s own small restaurant and terrace offering breakfast, afternoon tea/coffee with homemadecakes and freshly prepared home cooked evening meals.

There are several bars and supermarkets between 5-15minutes from La Source, while Gap, the capital town for this region, is about 40 minutes drive away, with bustling markets, trendy boutiques and many squares to watch the world drift by whilst enjoying a coffee or evening meal.

We can offer secure storage for mountain/motor bikes, caravans and gliders with various tools available for those essential repairs, with jet washers to clean and maintain your equipment.

This was our second visit to La Source – we stayed back in 2014, Everything was just how we remembered it, spacious, calm, clean, beautiful and the warm welcome. The owners, Paul and Judy have now finished their small restaurant (a tasteful barn conversion) offering breakfast, tasty homemade evening meals and drinks, there’s something surreal about sitting on the terrace watching the sun go down behind the mountains whilst sipping on a nice cold cocktail. Not sure if we’ll be camping next year, but if we are we’ll be back. Having a choice of fresh bread every morning is still a big bonus !!!!

Best camping spot ever

We were at La Source in August, for 10 days with 4 people and our travel sleeper. The weather was great, which always helps, but the camping itself was super. The view excellent, Paul & Judy are great people. We had dinner in their restaurant the final evening. Our son played the guitar and sang some songs for us all. Good food and drinks. We liked everything, the place whe had, the splendid view, clean toilets and showers. Great help from Paul on what to do and see around La Source. It was a pleasure being there, looking forward to go there once more. Robert & family, Netherlands

Spectacular!

We are a family of 4, our girls being 15 years and 11. We went to La Source for 4 nights this summer with our camper van, Charlie Brown. Having read all the reviews, we were convinced to visit and did not regret it for a moment! As soon as we arrived, Paul helped us locate a wonderful pitch with electric hookup. We were lucky to have a choice where to go, but to be honest, all the pitches are great, with the most spectacular view of mountains. The campsite itself is immaculate. It is not purpose built, so the pitches can be undulating in places, but the slopes are very gentle. You can have a pitch in the sun, or choose the shady area beneath the canopy of trees. The toilet block is separate from the shower and washing areas. All are basic but kept scrupulously clean. After an hot, active day, you can sit and relax with an ice cold beer or non alcoholic beverage, on the terrace outside the house. There is free wifi also around the terrace area. At the front of the house, is a huge, reasonably flat, grassed area, where you can set up games camp and play whatever your energy level dictates! We spent our energy playing frisbee and vortex (a small rugby ball shaped object, with a tapered end that makes a whizzing sound if thrown correctly and at high velocity). Our hosts were so helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much for them. Being parents to 2 outgoing, adventurous girls, they helped us arrange a canyoning day to Ribou, an experience we recommend and will never forget. Judy booked the trip and Paul gave us excellent directions. We also visited a gorge, which can only be described as a natural water park! The campsite is just as spectacular at night, especially if the sky is clear. You can star gaze for hours, whilst sipping wine and nibbling baguette and cheese. You will have no bad dreams here! We have a mosquito net around the boot of our camper, so we slept with the boot open, and the silence is magical. It's ideal for families with small children, as they can run around freely, without the fear of cars or getting lost. It excuses a natural sense of tranquility, so if you're wanting to party, then perhaps La Source is not quite the place. We only sampled what the local area has to offer, but would return for a longer visit, without hesitation. Thank you Paul and Judy again, for a fabulous stay.

Sheer Bliss

Stayed here for 2 weeks a week longer than we expected & the site was fantastic. Hosts Paul & Judy were an absolute delight & very friendly & welcoming. The new restaurant is beautiful as was the food all cooked by Judy & at €15 for main & dessert it was a bargain. We ate there often & enjoyed a glass of wine with Paul & Judy at the end of the evening. Toilets & showers were basic but spotless & they are next on the list for refurbishment. Can't recommend this site & the owners highly enough will return without a doubt.
We pitched up as we were passing by with the intention to stay for a couple of nights but ended staying for five nights in the end. The site is very peaceful, with none of the pitches feeling cramped in any way and there was plenty of choice on arrival for finding the best places. Paul and Judy were the perfect hosts from the moment we turned up and give lots of advice on things to do, where to go, how to get there but also seemed to spend a lot of their time being sociable with us which was no mean feat when they seemed to offer the same focus on each of their other guests, whilst also impeccably running a lovely and well kept site. Most importantly (to us particularly) they were very relaxed and welcoming to our dog Juno who had a wonderful time here and was saddest of all of us to leave. Paul and Judy didn't even seem to mind Juno nicking some of their dogs food, albeit Cartoush (their lovely and friendly Golden Retriever) didn't look so impressed. We ate at the restaurant a couple of nights and the food was delicious with Judy preparing a special menu for one of us as a vegetarian. The food and wine were reasonably priced, and the meal itself on the veranda overlooking the well kept grounds and mountains in the background was very relaxing. Overall, if looking for a peaceful stopover we couldn't recommend enough. Sitting of an evening with a G&T in hand and watching the para-and-normal-gliders floating down from the mountain in front of you is the perfect antidote to the strains of normal day to day life.

Magnificent view

In the summer 2015 my wife and I camped for one week at La Source. We have enjoyed our stay very much. The pitches are large, the view at the mountain is magnificent. The atmosphere at the camping is very quiet and relaxed, we liked the international company: English, German, French, Swiss and Dutch of course. Paul and Judy work very hard to make your stay a success. We had trouble with a rod of our awning, Paul very friendly helped us by fixing this problem.  And the surrounding is inviting for nice (not too challenging) trips on your bike!

Koos and Christine

We stayed at La Source for about 2 weeks last summer. This small "best kept secret" is indeed worth visiting due to its distinctive peacefulness, scenery, spacious pitches and its numerous possibilities for outdoor activities. If you're looking for a campsite that offers a calm and relaxed atmosphere in one of the most beautiful "low/mid-altitudes areas" of the French Alps, this is the place to go. But what really makes La Source stand out are the owners Paul and Judy. Their hospitality, flexibility and service level makes your stay at La Source surely one without any sorrows. Finally, don't forget to have dinner at their restaurant one time. Judy's cooking is absolutely delicious.

Wonderful 2 weeks

We took our caravan to La Source for a couple weeks in July and from the moment we arrived we knew it was a camp site out of the ordinary! Not just the stunning location but the desire of Paul to ensure we had a pitch that we were happy with for our 2 weeks.

Paul and Judy really make you feel like you are their visitors not just paying for a pitch on their camp site. They helped us with places to visit, lent us their map so Steph could find routes for her running training and of course served great cocktails on the decking.

The Tour de France passed directly outside whilst we were staying and Paul and Judy hosted a BBQ and served drinks on the meadow adjacent to the road - it made for a really great day.

The site is in a wonderful position looking out to the mountains in beautiful countryside, we saw deer and and wide boar in the evening right from out pitch.

When we had an issue with the caravan pump, Judy spent time ringing around and arranging for us to pick up a replacement, Paul provided some wire (cut from his speaker) so I could do a repair - how many campsite owners would go to that trouble to help.

So all in all a really wonderful 2 weeks in a special place hosted by Paul and Judy and their family ensuring we had the best break possible.

Wonderful place

We spent a great two weeks in July at this site.  The site itself is very nicely laid out, with none of the serried ranks typical of other sites, and good shady spots as well as ones with great views of the mountains behind, and with good clean facilities.  Paul and Judy were very welcoming and happy to help us with endless questions about the area - where to walk, what to see, where the best markets are, where to go canyoning (and organising and booking it all for us too), and where to find fresh milk - a rare commodity it seems.  And Judy's food is not to be missed; we had several extremely good dinners when we wanted a break from cooking for ourselves. And the fact that there are some B&B rooms was particularly helpful (they're very comfortable by the way) - it meant we could arrive late in the evening after the drive down from the UK and not have to pitch until the next morning, and also could pack up the day before leaving to get an early start for the drive home.

The area is great - loads of good walking up in the hills and mountains, challenging cycling for all levels as well as all the usual organised outdoor activities.  All in all, a great spot to stay, with lots to do in the area - thoroughly recommended!

A Rare Gem

This is a stunning site. Mountain views in the field at the back or shadier pitches amongst the trees: you are always close to nature here. It is a quiet site and very relaxing - ideal for couples. Owners Judy and Paul are very welcoming and hospitable. We'll definitely return!

Warm welcome

We just got home from our second stay at La Source and it was just as amazing as our previous visit. The scenery is beautiful and it is never too busy at the campsite. We got a very warm welcome from Judy and Paul. They are always helpful and have more than enough ideas for mountain activities. You can borrow maps for hikes and they are happy to make a call for you to arrange other activities like rafting, canyoning (awesome!!) and mountain climbing. We will definitely be coming back!

Lovely

I don't know enough english words to describe how our stay was nice! It would be easier for me in french! :)
Judy and Paul are warm, welcoming, helpfull, always smiling! The campsite is clean, functional and relaxing. I have nothing negative to say.

I recommend this site for the nature lovers!

If you come, you have to taste Judy's lemonade!

Just beautiful

After a long drive we pulled up the tree lined drive of La Source to a lovely welcome from Paul and Judy.  Paul spent time with us showing us the shady pitch they had booked for us and making sure everything was just right.  The campsite is very peaceful with lovely views of the mountains.  The campsite facilities are very good and clean with hot showers.  Paul and Judy are extremely attentive and arrange bread orders each day and nothing seems to be a problem for them.  The site has B&B, Tipis and camping as well as a restaurant.  Judy if a wonderful chef and the meal we had on our last evening was amazing.  Her puddings are well renowned in the area and we were told about them in the Information bureau in Serres!  We even met Paul and Judy's son and daughter who were just as lovely as their parents and of course their gorgeous dog Cartouche 🐶.  Paul would think there was something wrong if we didn't mention the train......but honestly it wasn't a problem!  Thank you Paul, Judy and Family for a great holiday.  PS Watching the Tour de France on TV today...wish we were there for all the fun!   Joanne and Martin BOYLE.

EXCELLENT

Apologies it has taken us so long to leave this review (practically a year!!). We spent 2 weeks at La Source in September 2014, we had initially planned to stay only a week but enjoyed it so much we decided to stay. It is a really tranquil site and the owners are great. Our car broke down during our stay and without them it would have been even more of a nightmare. The facilities are exactly what you want from a campsite - clean flushing toilets, clean hot showers plus they have the option of breakfast which we did a lot, and we had a few lunches and dinner which were all delicious. We both thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks there and were very sad to leave our new friends Paul & Judy (the owners). We hope to return sometime soon, it really is the perfect spot. Thank you! Lovely and peacful

We (2 adults, 3 children 16,14 & 7) stayed for 6 nights at the beginning of peak season in July '14. We were fed up with large busy, noisy, hectic sites from previous camping trips to France, and were looking for something more peaceful and relaxing in a lovely environment. Well we found it.

The owners, Judy and Paul, made us feel very welcome. They are very relaxed and friendly hosts. They have lived in the area for years, so have great knowledge of the area and tips for places to visit (go to Jou De Loup and catch the ski lift up the mountain - but it closes at 4.00 p.m. it-  only took an hour to walk down, but which added to the experience).

Site is small and set in lovely scenery with amazing mountain back drop behind and woods, and open fields. I could just sit and gaze for ages – take binoculars.

There has been some discussion of the railway line and noise. Yes there is rail line to the south, and yes a train horn goes off when it passes – but it’s not frequent and it doesn’t run at night. So no, it’s not a problem.

It is a good clean camp site with adequate and nice facilities. It was not busy when we stayed, so there was never a queue for facilities (loo's/showers/washing up). Although with two (or was it three) showers, if the site was near full I could imagine the number of facilities/hot water becoming a bit stretched. Paul and Judy run a B&B from the house so there were meals and drinks open to campers as well. Paul also did a baguette and croissant run every morning. Camping rates were also very reasonable.

There is a large open grass field at the front of the site for children to freely kick about in and a small open games area with badminton net and ping pong table. But that's it. So if you need play areas, pools (and all the hectic-ness that incurs), this might not be the site for you. Our teenage children really liked this site for its peace and quiet. We took our own swing ball, which absorbed some play needs. Whilst our youngest would have liked a pool, and things to climb/bounce on, he was satiated by the free wi-fi access and use of his tablet and football/swingball.

There was plenty to do to fill our afternoon trips, amazing scenery and mountains not a huge drive away. Supermarche about 20 mins drive and small shop in village 5 mins drive. Judy sorted out a canoe trip for us, which was a laugh. There is great walking, don’t forget boots and rucksack !

Would we go again ?  -  Absolutely yes.  I really shouldn't give it a good review as want to keep as our secret spot!

Friendly, clean, relaxing, quiet, lovely scenery, plenty enough to see and do in the area. It’s a lovely part of the world. Just what a holiday should be.

A breath of fresh air

After camping for a week on the south coast (incredibly busy) we stopped off at La Source and ended up staying for 5 nights. The good things said in previous reviews are true, it was a breath of Fresh Air compared to the south coast, it actually felt as though our holiday had just started.

The scenery ranks amongst some of the most beautiful we've seen and there are some spectacular walks to be had, some starting from La Source. The site itself is beautifully clean and the grounds well looked after, the owners (Paul and Judy) give you a warm welcome and were most helpful during our stay - a pretty site and a perfect place to relax. Can't wait to go back.

Ps. the best bit – a choice of fresh bread was available every morning

Tipi - tastic

Just returned from a weeks stay in one of Paul and Judy's Tipi's. It was amazing, literally everything you needed (down to the kitchen roll) was provided. We were lucky enough to experience some thunderstorms overnight as well which were impressive and we stayed perfectly warm and dry. The site itself is immaculately clean if basic at the moment though there I believe plans a foot to modernise, but everything works and is useable and the showers were hot and powerful, nothing like the campsite showers I remember! The views are also terrific from all round the campsite.

Paul and Judy are fabulous hosts, full of knowledge about the area and always had a suggestion for where to go and what to do.

Judy's cooking is also amazing and it was very handy to have the option of eating dinner on site without having to cook.

I can't recommend La Source enough. Go, you will love it. And stay in a Tipi!

Camping La Source

We stayed one night on our way through France and it was a perfect start to our camping season!!  The owners were the most helpful, warm and accommodating couple and they are doing great things with the site.  Everything is well done, very clean and well looked after.  We are looking forward to returning to sample the new restaurant.  The area is very beautiful and the owners recommended some good walks and local bike rides. We will definitely return.

Beautiful Campsite!

We had never visited or stayed in the Hautes Alpes before, what an amazing and beautiful place there is so much to do and see. We went canoeing on the Drome and hiking on routes / maps given to us by the owners, We will come back next year with our mountain bikes to try some of the mountain bike trails..

La Source is a truly relaxing place and a perfect site to explore this corner of France, Our pitch faced the mountains and the rising sun, one morning a small herd of deer strolled through the fields and past our tent. The pitches are large and well spaced with a choice of open field or secluded wooded pitches, the facilities are very clean and overall the site was really well looked after by the owners. We would highly recommend that you stay here and explore the Hautes Alpes, we’ll be returning to La Source possibly to try out one of the Tipi’s.

Fantastic Location

We just spent ten wonderful days at La Source this May 2014. We have been camping for twenty  years now and this site is now in our top three iever. Its a small site which suites us perfectly, there are rooms in the house as well as teepees, its very quiet and spacious plenty of wildlife in the fields around you. The campsite is very well maintiained and the owners are doing some plans to update bits and bobs but as it stands now the toilets are spotlessly clean as are the showers and plenty of hot water. The site is well located for touring the area whether it be the Haute Alps or the Vercour  and Paul and Judy had plenty of suggestions of places to see and things to do as they are very experienced in the area which is really useful.. We couldn't fault the site and would reccommend it to anyone who wants a small well run site with stunning scenery all around run by charming people who's concern is your enjoyment.

A Real Gem

We stayed at La Source for 6 nights in June 2013 and thoroughly enjoyed it; this has to be one of the most chilled and relaxing campsites we've ever stayed at. There will be a change of ownership this year and the new owner plans to convert part of the barn in to a cafe and erect some tipi type tents for hire already set up.

The campsite is listed as being a waterside location but it isn't (unless you count the ditch). Swimming is available in some ponds but they are some distance. A visit to the Gorges of Méouge is a must for dip in the river there too.

Visitors should be aware that a train track runs past the bottom of the site with a nearby level crossing at which the train is obliged to sound its horn. The last train at night is around 11 PM and the first in the morning is about 6 AM. In the still mountain air the sound of the train whistle can be heard echoing around the valley. It was a shock the first night but after that we hardly noticed. You would be well advised to select a pitch as far away from the road/trains as possible for maximum peace.

Some pitches are under trees and some are in the open. I would never recommend camping under trees but apparently some people like the shade that it offers and are prepared to put up with bird poo, tree sap etc on their tents - not to mention the flies.

The writers of another review (Bottom Bracket) were there again with their tandem during our visit. Long may they keep returning.

La Source is one of our favorite spots in the world. Honestly. It’s situated among beautiful surroundings and easily found - yet it’s far enough off the beaten track to offer peace and tranquility. There’s plenty to do nearby (find out for yourself) or alternatively it would not be a wasted day sitting outside your tent waiting for a microlight to fly overhead. We have visited La Source for a number of years now and each time arrived to a warm welcome equaled only by an immaculate pitch and facilities. Whatever you want can be easily found - shopping, swimming, cycling etc but it’s relaxation that brings us bank time and time again. Keep up the good work ladies your doing a magnificent job - La Source C’est Bon !

BOTTOM BRACKET For the past 5 years we have cycled on our Tandem from southern Spain (where we live) touring most European countries and have yet to find many sites in that is anywhere near the first class facilities and ambience of LA SOURCE, The owners put hem selves out to accommodate my desire for the ultimate emplacement, providing us with table and chairs a welcomed luxury not forthcoming to often, Hot showers that are above reproach and the bonus of Toilet seats in the loo, not found to often, like being at home, In fact we FEEL AT HOME, We stayed with our touring caravan, but prefer the comfort of our tent now we are older , we highly recommend to all who wish site with peace and quite, and with many places of interest in the locality

Camping La Source

We have stayed a week or two at La Source 3 times over the last six years, first in a Tourer and now our campervan. There are not many campsites we keep on going back to but this is one of them. The area is great for walking and cycling. Hang gliders often float silently above the site which is situated near a handsome range of hills. The English owners go out of their way to be helpful. The facilities are always super clean and best of all the washing up sinks are indoors! Highly recommended.

Camping La Source

We are very much looking forward to our third year at La Source, what a find! It is so peaceful and quiet and to wake up every morning to the fab views is medicine for the soul. All the pitches are well spaced (which is great, no crossing of guy ropes - it can happen!) and there is a good variety of wooded area or open space. There is so much to do locally, we still have lots to see and do, fishing is on this year’s list, and most of our afternoons are spent at the local lake which our children - now 13yrs and 11yrs thoroughly enjoy. The Owners are so lovely and they work very hard keeping the site and its facilities in immaculate condition (hairs in sinks and showers are a pet hate of mine and I’ve yet to be offended!). They are always available for help and advice on where to visit and we have had some great days out on their recommendations. This year we have friends joining us for a couple of nights on their way down south and I would not hesitate to recommend this site to anyone who wants a warm welcome and a break from the hurley-burley of the rat-race.

Camping La Source

it was our first time camping in France so everything was a new experience. We stayed at several sites, all recommended by Cool Camping. We arrived at La Source having had a lovely time at one site, the drive was around 6 hours so of course we were tired. Firstly the site was difficult to find, we don’t possess sat nav. Secondly the welcome although friendly wasn’t warm. Thirdly we had to pitch under trees although there appeared to be plenty of space when we arrived. Fourthly the site was quite basic and fairly bland although the scenery was beautiful. We stayed for two nights but that was more than enough as the campsite lacked atmosphere. On our departure the owners were rather perfunctory and didn’t wish us ’bon voyage’ or ’do come again’, so we won’t! I’m sorry to have to write a poor review but it’s been almost a year since our stay and the feeling didn’t leave me and our next campsite was a revelation! Do go for the scenery, and the price(quite cheap). Don’t go for the atmosphere or welcome.
