About Mille Etoiles

Suitable For

Tents, campervans, caravans, canoeists, nature-lovers, dogs – yes.

Nearby

Canoe on the Ardèche or Cèze. Hire boats and instructors from canoyak.fr to take a 2-hour or 2-day excursion. Park at Sauze and a shuttle bus runs to Vallon Pont d’Arc, so you can pick up your vehicle at the end of the day. Join the throngs at the iconic sandy beach of Vallon Pont d’Arc, or view it from the road above. This stone ‘bridge’ is one of France’s best-known landmarks and epitimises all that is great about the country (throwing off your clothes for a swim in a river sounds appealing to us). Barjac is a short drive away – worth a visit on Friday mornings for market day.

Food & Drink

A recent addition to the campsite is an excellent little restaurant with reasonable prices and hefty portions food. There is a varied menu (including local specialities) and the mussels (with fries) are a particular highlight. There is a small farm shop near the campsite; ask for directions.

A perfect holiday bubble

We rented a yurt at Milles Etoiles for a week at the start of August and it totally surpassed all expectations. Nadine and her team are so friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere on site feels like you are in a different world - it's a perfect bubble, away from real life yet close to loads of activities to keep you busy if you want. The yurt was great - very comfortable, clean and loads of space for a family of 4.Even though it was hot, mid 30Cs in the day the yurt stayed pretty cool and we had no problems sleeping. The kitchen is really well equipped and more than adequate to make family meals however we made the most of the restaurant on site eating delicious pizzas and salads at a very reasonable price most evenings! The shower blocks are clean and spacious and we never had to queue. The walk to the river, whilst strenuous in the heat, was more than worth it and by the end of the week our 5 & 7 year old were totally acclimatised and we managed it in 35 minutes each way - just make sure you take plenty of water and walking shoes/trainers with you. The river swimming was the best and we could have simply done this all day everyday exploring different rocks to jump off and just being but we did venture out had great days at the Chateau des Roure only 10 mins down the road and the Chauvet Cave 2. We can't wait to come back next year!

Amazing experience and we didn't want to leave!

What a fantastic holiday! We rented a yurt for a week at the start of August - we weren't quite sure what to expect but Milles Etoiles completely surpassed all expectations and Nadine and her team are so friendly and welcoming. The yurt was very comfortable, clean and extremely well equipped. Although the temperatures were in the mid 30Cs in the day we didn't overheat at all. The attached kitchen was perfect to make family meals but I have to say we made the most of the lovely restaurant on site- amazing pizzas and salads etc that are very reasonably priced indeed. The walk to and from the river, whilst strenuous in the heat, was more than worth it and by the end of the week our 5 & 7 year old were totally acclimatised and we managed it in 35 minutes each way. You really feel like you are away from everything but yet so close to some great attractions and we had a great day at the Chateau des Roure just 10 mins down the road. We felt like we were in a bubble whilst on holiday, we all completely relaxed in the wonderful atmosphere on the site -we felt like we were in a different world. We can't wait to go back next year.

Friendly non commercial campsite, fantastic location

Just had a fab week here. The owners are friendly & the 30-40 min hike down the gorge to the river is well worth it for a relatively remote and peaceful stretch of river which is great for swimming & jumping off rocks. It’s way quieter than much of the surrounding area which was the highlight for us and the campsite has a very laid back, relaxed feel

Totally delightful.

The site is great, the location is amazing. My group and I camped in our own tents before leaving and returning to stay in a Safari Tent for two nights. The Safari Tents are amazing, I would 100% recommend to anyone considering it. When camping we had a good sized pitch and the toilets were clean and well maintained, you do need to bring loo roll. The site is located in a beautiful spot a nice distance away from Vallon and feels rural without being inaccessible. The restaurant on site does a good pizza and wine although you will need to check which days it is open. There are two BBQs which we made use of (make sure you bring your own charcoal). We only saw one other group using them when we stayed however it was mid-May and everywhere was very quiet. The Safari tents are amazing, the website doesn't do them justice. The owners of the site are great, it would have been better if I had brushed up on my French before leaving as there was a language barrier but they were very hospitable and helpful. The outstanding thing about this campsite though is that you can walk down through the forest to the river. It takes about 20 minutes walk and it steep at points but worthwhile. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again at the same time of year.

The most peaceful stay under canvas

To many, camping is just a cheap holiday. But it can be soooo much more. We stayed this lovely place in 2015, and it is one of the very few camping spots we have returned to: We were at first not keen on the idea of camping around Vallon Pont d'Arc, with its multitudes of crowded campsites and canoe-hire businesses and teeming with holidaymakers. However, just a few kilometers downstream of Vallon is an altogether otherworldly place, and it feels a lot more like the depths of rural France with trails through forests and over high country, charming old villages, basic country food and a sense of profound isolation. Nestled among all this, on a wooded plateau high above the southern bank of the Ardèche Gorge, is Camping Mille Etoiles. It is about 4km off the main road which passes through the nearest village of Labastide de Virac, but the only road noise we heard came from the occasional motorcycle gunning along the gorge road on the opposite bank about 2km away. With temperatures nudging 40˚C in early August we were thankful of a campsite which offered plenty of shade, nestled in the scrubby garrigue of (mostly) evergreen Ardèche oaks. For a very reasonable outlay, we were in a site with all the facilities we would would need, without any frippery: a bar and restaurant offering good fare at reasonable prices, an office where basic provisions can be bought and fresh bread delivered daily, a dedicated wood/charcoal barbecue area next to the restaurant (gas BBQs only on camping pitches), plenty of space for kids to play (cars are not allowed on site except to load and unload), bikes and donkeys available for hire, and sufficient loos/showers/sinks/wash-up facilities/washing machine/electric hook-up etc etc. in good order. There is no pool. It is not needed. At the northern end of the camp is the cliff edge of the Gorge (some stunning views) around 200 metres above the Ardèche river, with direct access to it via a sometimes steep 20-30 minute scramble with small children. The rewards are a quarter-mile stretch of crystal-clear water, slow-flowing, some shallows, deeper pools to indulge in some rock-diving, ample space with some shade to 'beach', and gorgeous views of the canyons in both directions. We had to suffer the twice-daily onslaught of canoe-and-kayak rush-hour, but took comfort that we were in far better shape than those poor dehydrated paddlers in their boats sweating under their life jackets. And the peace and quiet when they had passed was all the more sweet. Yes, there is little grass and the ground is firm, so rock pegs are a sensible choice. But pitches are mostly level and there is a healthy mix of tents, campervans and hikers just passing through on the GR4. So bring a hammock or two, a good read, do some stargazing, listen to the cicadas, try to get a glimpse of wild boar or coypu snuffling about the brush at night beyond the campsite fence. And relax.
