Alpine camping right beside the beautiful river Clarée with brand new, modern facilities

Hiking, mountain biking, climbing, cycling… few spots can match the mountain sports on offer in the pine-clad Clarée valley. It was here, in the town of Briançon that the Tour De France’s most gruelling stage was battled out in 2017, as cyclists took off into the dramatic alpine scenery, winding up switchback roads to the mighty mountaintop of Col d'Izoard. The views, the villages, it is a place that has it all, including a cracking little campsite.

Set directly on the banks of the river Clarée, six kilometres outside of Briançon itelf, Huttopia La Clarée is a well-established campsite that has only recently been taken over and refurbished by the Huttopia brand. The result is a 22-acre camping expanse, with pitches spread among shrubs and backing into the pine trees of the hills, while facilities, new and modern, include a swimming pool, family-friendly washrooms and a refurbished reception building with Wi-Fi, a shop and a small pizzeria.

The best camping spots are down by the waters edge, where you can pitch your tent overlooking the river. Glampers, meanwhile, can pluck for one of their ready-pitched canvas lodge options, with separate rooms, proper beds and a functional kitchen space.

If you’re not pedalling, paddling or plodding in the great outdoors, then roaming the pretty mountain villages is another way to pass the time. Nevache, Val-des-Près, La Vachette and Les Alberts are all well worth a visit, while Briançon’s medieval fortifications – Vauban – in the very heart of the city, are perhaps the most remarkable sight, built into the rocks of the slope and wonderfully well preserved. It was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 is just a 10-minute drive from the campsite.

Outdoor heated swimming pool, paddling pool, wooden sun terrace, a central lodge with internet and free Wi-Fi, a playground, boules pitch, table tennis, 2 volley ball courts and bikes for hire. 'Camper's corner' shop for any essentials and groceries you have forgotten, plus books and board games to borrow and tourist information in reception. There are fridges and BBQs to hire and a small Pizza-Gill Restaurant (open July & Aug). Fresh bread if each morning if you order the evening before.

Tents, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, families, groups, couples, pets… everyone!

Welcome to the mountains folks. This is a place for alpine living, with hiking and mountain biking top of the to-do list for most campers. Road cycling and rock climbing are also popular – take on the big Tour-De-France-worthy hills to win your 'King of the Mountains' jursey. For fishing enthusiasts, the campsite is located on the banks of the Clarée river. Classified 1st category, the river is abundant in trout, as is the Durance, the Cerveyrette, and the many nearby mountain lakes.

Food & Drink

You can order morning bread and croissants at the campsite reception (tea, coffee, orange juice and jam are also available) and there's an onsite pizzeria with a terrace (open during July & Aug). Elsewhere, head up hill to Refuge Adèle Planchard (0033 4 76 79 92 14) in Val-des-Prés for rustic mountain grub.

A gem of a campsite and location

We booked in December 2019 to stay at late July 2020..with Covid and lockdowns we weren’t sure we would be able to travel but we’re lucky enough to enjoy a fantastic stay here. The site is very clean and friendly; the perfect size for its campers in terms of facilities and spacious pitches under the pine trees. Beware the ground is very hard in places! The staff were superb especially the manager who helped us with a couple of small issues which arose during our stay. E-mountain bikes for hire on site; it was an ideal base for Hiking and mountain views in the Clarée and serre chevalier. briancon is a nearby drive for provisions and great restaurants. Good sanitary blocks and the kids loved the adjacent river which gave us an alternative to the often busy poolside area. The only (minor) disappointment was not being allocated a riverside/sunny pitch despite requesting one on booking but this didn’t spoil the fantastic holiday here and we would love to return!

Great campsite in a perfect location

We stayed for a week at the end of July, beginning of August. We booked late, so we had a pitch without electricity on the edge of a small open grass area, which gave our kids plenty of room to run around on. Most of the other pitches were in the trees. We had great views of mountains in all directions, and the stars at night, but we also had the tent in the sun during the day. The campsite was pretty well full while we were there, but never felt too busy or crowded. They could do with a couple of extra toilets in the block nearest us (100m away from pitch), as there were sometimes short queues for the loo, but apart from that facilities were great. We enjoyed the new pool, staff were friendly and helpful, there was a freezer for ice blocks, and there was loads to do within 20 minutes at Briancon and Montgenevre. Thoroughly recommended - we had a great time. The local village, Les Alberts, had a festival on while we were there, which was good fun, and worth trying to time a visit with.

Perfect alpine retreat

Amazing location set amongst the mountains, river and forest with first rate services. The showers were always hot, toilets always clean, the pool was wonderful. The staff were extremely friendly too (Fatima in particular) and I would definitely recommend this campsite to friends and family, not to mention returning sometime soon. Thank you for an incredible holiday.
