About Huttopia Chardons Bleus

Suitable For

Tents, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, families, groups, couples, pets… everyone!

Camping on an island? Then it's the beaches you'll be visiting. Montamer and La Salee are the best for swimming when the tide's in and Grenettes is the one for surfers (you can hire boards right by the waterfront). At Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, Notre Dame beach is good for shellfish gathering. Windsurfing, kayaking and catamaran sailing are all popular here too, while, on land, bikes are the best way to get around with a good network of family-friendly cycle trails across the island (bikes are available to hire from the campsite). There are also public tennis courts 1km from Huttopia Chardons Bleus. For something less active, discover the Vauban fortifications – a recognised UNESCO world heritage site – visit the ramparts of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, the ruins of Abbey Châteliers, the Fort de la Prée and the steeple of Ars-en-Ré. A visit to Phare de la Baleine, the main lighthouse that is synonymous with Île de Ré, is also a must.

Food & Drink

The restaurant on-site serves excellent homemade pizzas, along with a host of other snacks and drinks best enjoyed out on the terrace. It's only open over the May public holidays and through July and August. There's also fresh bread delivery each morning (make sure you order the evening before). A whole range of delicious produce can be found among the island’s market stalls, with markets held every morning at la Flotte, Rivedoux and Sainte-Marie throughout the year. Oysters, sea salt, Pineau, Cognac and the island's delicious potatoes are the most local goods of choice.

I'm afraid I cannot recommend this campsite

It was nicely laid out amongst the trees, but any hope of a peaceful 'cool camping' experience was dashed by the main road running past the campsite which is the directed lorry route across the island. The constant traffic noise next to our pitch was unbearable so we had to leave. Fortunately the manager agreed that the road is a problem and refunded the fees we had paid for camping so we were able to leave and find a more peaceful site. Not worthy of cool camping I'm afraid, neither is the other Huttopia site we booked onto which had a live rock band playing in the evenings... not sure i'll be looking at your recommendations in future.

Great Summer

The campsite is situated in between the key locations on the island. Fantastic for a short ride to the harbours or one of the beaches, you can’t fault it for location. The site it’s self is clean and tidy however there are not enough showers and you always had to wait. A little bit of a struggle to pitch up in a caravan due to the soft/sandy ground. However our pitch was a good size. Pools were great and always clean however the decking was a death trap with kids slipping all over it! Other than this it’s a great site with excellent staff.

Excellent base to explore the island

Lovely naturally landscaped site with plenty of trees and shade. Our pitch was more than adequate for a large caravan. Ground is soft and can be dusty. Great pools, games room and facilities serving pizza and baked goods. Staff polite and attentive. Definitely take bikes, fantastic routes all over the island. Great base to visit the local harbours and beaches. Pet friendly with loads of tracks to walk dogs. Loved it.

Great base to explore Ile de Re

We had a great 3 day stay here. It is a very central base to explore the island and hired bikes at a very reasonable rate. The staff were so helpful and all went above and beyond to make special food for my son in the restaurant, change our pitch and sort out our bike hire. The site is a lot busier than a previous Huttopia site we have been to, and the pitches smaller. But people come here to see and explore the island—and it is perfect for that. The facilities are all fine and sufficient for the site. The pools are great for kids and there was a brilliant band one night that my son absolutely loved! But it is noisier and less back-to-nature than other Huttopia sites. My advice to try and get a pitch nearer the cycling path.

Wonderful Holiday

It was easy to book on line. Staff on arrival very friendly and helpful. Had a lovely pitch for our rather large caravan. I requested some shade as we have a little dog and lately it has been very hot. Got what we requested and just loved it. Usually I don't go swimming, but the pool here was so inviting and warm and after a hot day cycling a dip was just the ticket. One evening there was a group playing down by the bar. They were really fantastic and everyone was jigging around to the music. The cycle paths lead off the site and we took our bikes and cycled to La Flotte where there was a lovely market. It was only 3.5 kilometres and flat all the way - suited me fine. The sanitary showers and toilets were clean and modern. Only criticism was that we were on the right hand side of the site as you drive in and there is no emptying place for the chemical toilet in our caravan. Had to walk all the way across to the other side of the site near the reception. It was a long way to drag the toilet receptacle. Also grey water from our sink had to be emptied at the same place. It would be a great improvement if there were an emptying place on the other side of the site where there are a lot of pitches as well as the reception side.
